The Buzz About Sustainability, John S. Farnsworth
The Buzz About Sustainability, John S. Farnsworth
Environmental Studies and Sciences
I wear sweater vests, I never split infinitives, I trim my beard close, and I read a poem at the beginning of every class. More to the point, as a member of the English faculty at a distinguished university, I distrust any word that had not been coined by the time my father—himself formerly a professor at a Jesuit university—completed his undergraduate studies.
So what am I doing as the faculty director of a Residential Learning Community (RLC) organized around the theme of “sustainability”?
In the past 18 months, the university that employs me hired its first sustainability coordinator, held …

This study explores the effects of visitor observation of giant panda play on visitor concern for endangered species and satisfaction with seeing giant pandas. A total of 335 visitors to three institutions that house giant pandas participated in the study. These institutions are: the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and the Chengdu Zoo, in China; and Zoo Atlanta in the U.S. After viewing the giant pandas, visitors were interviewed on whether they ever observed a panda play session, whether they observed panda play on the day of the visit, whether they wanted additional information on panda protection, and …

The Law Of Society: Governance Through Contract, Peter Zumbansen
The Law Of Society: Governance Through Contract, Peter Zumbansen
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This paper focuses on contract law as a central field in contemporary regulatory practice. In recent years, "governance by contract" has emerged as the central concept in the context of privatization, domestic and transnational commercial relations, and law-and-development projects. Meanwhile, as a result of the neo-formalist attack on contract law, "governance of contract" through contract adjudication, consumer protection law, and judicial intervention into private law relations has come under severe pressure. Building on early historical critique of the formalist foundations of an allegedly private law of the market, the paper assesses the current justifications for contractual governance and posits that …

Using Autoethnography In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Reflective Practice From ‘The Other Side Of The Mirror', Fernanda P. Duarte
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Borrowing concepts from autoethnography – a writing genre in which the researcher ‘becomes’ the phenomenon under investigation – this essay is based on my reflections and recollections of important events and insights that occurred during my participation in a professional development project. This experience has significantly altered my outlook on teaching and learning, as it forced me to reflect more critically on why I teach the way I do, and look at my pedagogical practices anew. The first part provides a brief introduction of autoethnography as a reflexive writing genre; the second part presents the broad narrative – that of …

Review Of Riding For The Brand: 150 Years Of Cowden Ranching By Michael Pettit, D. Anthony Tyeeme Clark
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
As a family of ranchers, there is little doubt that the Cowdens have contributed to 150 years of the history of the western fringe of the Great Plains in Texas and New Mexico. As descendent and author Michael Pettit suggests, the Cowdens arrived in Texas approximately five years after the state was admitted to the Union. To add an additional perspective, Quanah Parker's band of Comanches were twenty-five years away from accepting reservation life at Fort Sill in Oklahoma Territory as William Hamby Cowden settled in Palo Pinto County, Texas. He clashed with bands of Comanches, . but in the …

Childhood
In 1870, during the same year that Italy became a unified, free nation, one of the world's greatest educators, rv1aria Nlontessori. was born in Chiaravalle in the province of Ancona. Her father, Alessandro l\1ontessori, was a successful government official and a member of the bourgeois civil service. Her mother, Renide Stoppani, was a well educated, wealthy woman devoted to liberation and unity of Italy. When Maria was about twelve years old, her parents moved to Rome to give their only child a better education than Ancona could offer. The family's move from the more provincial town of Ancona to …
Review Of The Archaeology Of Chaco Canyon: An Eleventh-Century Pueblo Regional Center, Edited By Stephen H. Lekson, Carrie Heitman
Review Of The Archaeology Of Chaco Canyon: An Eleventh-Century Pueblo Regional Center, Edited By Stephen H. Lekson, Carrie Heitman
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The Archaeology of Chaco Canyon is one of two synthesis volumes resulting from the National Park Service Chaco Project (1971-1982) (see also Mathien 2005). As the capstone to that project, this volume has much to offer the student of Chaco and those interested in the intellectual history and trajectories of archaeological theory. From 1999 to 2004, Stephen Lekson (and many others) organized six working conferences to address different dimensions of Chacoan prehistory. Broadly called the Chaco Synthesis, the topics included ecology and economy, architecture, the organization of production, the Chaco world, and so- ciety and polity and concluded with a …

FOCUS on Boise State
Over the past 75 years, tens of thousands of Boise State students have realized their dreams and made a difference in the world, thanks in part to the far-reaching vision of Boise State’s founder and first president, Bishop Middleton Barnwell. This issue of FOCUS looks at some of those who benefited from that vision, as well as those who are shaping Boise State’s future. The photo above is part of a historical mural created by art professor Alma Gomez-Frith to commemorate Boise State’s diamond jubilee (page 24). Cover collage by Andrew Roberts.

In Search Of Polymorphic Alu Insertions With Restricted Geographic Distributions, Richard Cordaux, Deepa Srikanta, Jungnam Lee, Mark Stoneking, Mark A. Batzer
Faculty Publications
Alu elements are transposable elements that have reached over one million copies in the human genome. Some Alu elements inserted in the genome so recently that they are still polymorphic for insertion presence or absence in human populations. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in using Alu variation for studies of human population genetic structure and inference of individual geographic origin. Currently, this requires a high number of Alu loci. Here, we used a linker-mediated polymerase chain reaction method to preferentially identify low-frequency Alu elements in various human DNA samples with different geographic origins. The candidate Alu loci were …

Asset Mapping: Community Geography Project
Making community development as democratic as possible has long been a challenge for urban planners and municipalities alike. A number of obstacles stand in the way of greater community participation in the planning process and consequently communities who are best served by their design. Visual Preference Surveys (VPS) are a tool planners can use to increase participation in the design process within the communities they serve. This can result in community plans that more accurately reflect the wants or needs of its members. Relying heavily on image driven content, VPS offers communities a straightforward methodology that asks participants to rate …

Reel Paradise And Sisters In Law, Jennifer Malkowski
Film & Media Studies: Faculty Publications
Steve James's Reel Paradise and Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayisi's Sisters in Lawexemplify divergent paths in the field of ethnographic documentary since 1922's formative Nanook of the North. The observational style of Sisters in Law bests the self-indulgence of Reel Paradise, though both films present ethical challenges.
Nativity And Environmental Risk Perception: An Empirical Study Of Native-Born And Foreign-Born Residents Of The Usa, Francis O. Adeola
Nativity And Environmental Risk Perception: An Empirical Study Of Native-Born And Foreign-Born Residents Of The Usa, Francis O. Adeola
Sociology Faculty Publications
This study examines the major differences between native-born and foreign-born residents of the United States on measures of environmental risk perception and risk attitudes. Hypotheses derived from the cultural theory of risk were tested. Discriminant analysis of the General Social Survey (GSS) and International Social Survey Program (ISSP) data was conducted using environmental and technological risk perception and attitudes modules. The results indicate that foreign-born respondents are more risk averse and skeptical about sources of information about environmental risks than their native-born counterparts. While there are some points of agreement, these groups exhibit dissimilar environmental risk perception on several measures. …
