"Complete Liberty"? Gender, Sexuality, Race, And Social Change On The Lower Columbia River, 1805-1838, Gray H. Whaley

Publications

This article analyzes social change in the emerging colonial world of the lower Columbia River from 1805 to 1838, particularly regarding gender and sexuality. It teases out distinctions among formal marriages, informal “custom of the country” arrangements, the exercise of sexual “liberties” by young Chinookan women, and prostitution, revealing much of the complex sexual interactions between natives and newcomers. Integrating Institutional And Neoclassical Economics Using Game Theory, Dan Friesner, Dan Axelsen Oct 2007

Integrating Institutional And Neoclassical Economics Using Game Theory, Dan Friesner, Dan Axelsen

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

We contend that economics is in need of a new paradigm. When taught in the traditional neoclassical construct, economics is not appealing to many students, particularly those taking economics to satisfy general education requirements. This, in turn, may explain why economic literacy in the U.S. is trending downward. Our approach uses game theory to teach economics by juxtaposing neoclassical and institutional economic paradigms so that students not only better understand the neoclassical model, but also are exposed to alternative approaches in economics. To better understand neoclassical models, we incorporate three institutional criticisms of neoclassical economics: (1) the assumption that all …

Achieving Millennium Development Goals For Health: Building Understanding, Trust And Capacity To Respond, Timothy Downs, Heidi Jane Larson Oct 2007

Achieving Millennium Development Goals For Health: Building Understanding, Trust And Capacity To Respond, Timothy Downs, Heidi Jane Larson

Sustainability and Social Justice

Biomedical interventions promise achievement of health-related Millennium Development Goals provided social-, capacity- and knowledge-based constraints to scaling up and reaching marginalized people at risk, are addressed, and balance between prevention and treatment is struck. We argue for a new approach: multi-stakeholder capacity building and learning for empowerment: MuSCLE. MuSCLE is used as a way to frame three systemic weaknesses in traditional health science and policy approaches: (1) a lack of engagement with people at risk to build a collective understanding of the contexts of health problems, including social drivers; (2) a lack of multi-criteria evaluation of alternative interventions; (3) a …

Screening The Temptation: Interpretation And Indeterminacy In Cinematic Transformations Of A Gospel Story, David B. Howell Oct 2007

Screening The Temptation: Interpretation And Indeterminacy In Cinematic Transformations Of A Gospel Story, David B. Howell

Journal of Religion & Film

Stories contain gaps that that readers and listeners must fill in with their imagination. Film by its very nature fills in some of the gaps in narrative as it presents a visual and aural experience for its viewers. In doing so, however, film can also impose particular interpretations of a biblical story even while creating an appearance of verisimilitude. In this essay, different understandings of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness are explored through some cinematic portrayals of this biblical narrative.
