Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner Jan 2007

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Introduction Increasingly, population modeling and systems analysis are being used to examine the complex issues that are at the heart of CP/IPM (crop production and integrated pest management) and biological control. The design of economically sound and sustainable crop management strategies requires a thorough understanding of the whole production system including arthropod pests, pathogens, and weeds. More than three decades ago, Huffaker and Croft (1976) stressed the need to rely on systems analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration to accomplish this task. Soon the question arose as to how mathematical techniques employed in the analysis of physical systems could be adapted to …

Gathering Around The Organizational Campfire: Storytelling As A Way Of Maintaining And Changing For-Profit Organizational Cultures, Steven Austin Stovall Jan 2007

Gathering Around The Organizational Campfire: Storytelling As A Way Of Maintaining And Changing For-Profit Organizational Cultures, Steven Austin Stovall

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Stories abound in the business world. They may be called "success stories," "best practices sharing," or even simply "stories," but however they are referred to, these tales not only become part of the organizational culture, but they also help define it. This study examines storytelling among for-profit organizations to demonstrate how stories are selected, told, and related to employees for the purposes of either changing the organizational culture or helping to maintain the existing one. Four companies have been chosen to capture the nature of storytelling as it relates to the sharing of cultural information within these firms. Using the …

Learning Through Ritual, R Brown Jan 2007

Learning Through Ritual, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper considers how mitate, the act of drawing an analogy between two seemingly unrelated things, was used to give students a ‘way in’ to designing an addition to the main hall of a Shinto Shrine in Japan. The challenge of the project was to create places that celebrate local identity; yet without the opportunity to visit Japan, how then to avoid external preconceptions or misinterpretations, and to develop an awareness of another culture’s sensibilities towards the built environment, particularly concepts alien to a Western perspective? Using mitate, students engaged with Japanese beliefs and values through an exploration of the …

Fethullah Gulen As A Servant-Leader, Gurkan Celik, Yusuf Alan Jan 2007

Fethullah Gulen As A Servant-Leader, Gurkan Celik, Yusuf Alan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The leadership literature often enumerates different leadership types and qualities (Northouse, 2002). This article aims to examine servant-leadership using an empirical example with a coherent theoretical basis. It centres on Fethullah Giilen, the initiator of a worldwide Islamic social movement. Giilen is of Turkish origin but has lived in the United States since 1999 because of the repressive political atmosphere of Turkey and due to some personal health problems. He has been defined as a harmonizing leader and an intellectual-scholar (ulama) focussing on social reforms and mentality change (Bulac, 2005). The movement inspired by Giilen emerged in the late 1960s …

Archaeology In Palestine: The Life And Death Of Albert Glock, Katherine Lamie Jan 2007

Archaeology In Palestine: The Life And Death Of Albert Glock, Katherine Lamie

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper provides a critical examination of the dynamic connection between archaeological research and programs of political and religious agendas in Israel and Palestine. This examination contributes to recent discipline-wide discussions concerning the powerful impact of archaeological research in areas of political and religious turmoil. The first section of this paper notes the absence of an Islamic counterpart to Biblical archaeology. While there is no archaeology that attempts to prove literal interpretations of the Qur'an, the rather complex archaeology advanced by Albert Glock (1984; 1994; 1995) serves to meet the needs of marginalized Palestinian villagers. Yet Glock's experience with the …

Early Pueblo I Ceramic Variability And Cultural Diversity, Janet Hagopian, James R. Allison Jan 2007

Early Pueblo I Ceramic Variability And Cultural Diversity, Janet Hagopian, James R. Allison

Faculty Publications

Early Pueblo I ceramics are predominately undecorated gray utility ware with much smaller amounts of painted white ware and red ware. Although many archaeologists have emphasized the lack of variability in Pueblo I ceramic assemblages, close examination of Animas-La Plata Project assemblages reveals significant variation in clays, temper materials, and vessel shape and size. At a larger scale, at least three distinct early Pueblo I ceramic traditions can be defined across the northern San Juan region. This paper examines ceramic variability among Animas-La Plata sites and relates it to cultural diversity within the project area and in the broader region.

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole Jan 2007

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

he most recent trend in historic preservation has led many in the field to pay attention to cultural landscapes as historic resources. Considering buildings, structures, or objects within a given spatial and physical setting, or landscape, endows them with historic significance and context that would be absent if viewed individually. While this is somewhat of an expansive approach to the built environment, this trend in historic landscape interpretation still does not account for all types of resources that one finds in the field. A fragmentary landscape is a cultural landscape defined by three characteristics: 1) the presence of buildings, structures, …

Religious Dogmatism And Civil Liberties: Literalism, Atheism, And Homosexuality., Kevin R. Hart Jan 2007

Religious Dogmatism And Civil Liberties: Literalism, Atheism, And Homosexuality., Kevin R. Hart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between religious dogmatism and support for civil liberties of atheists and homosexuals. Utilizing data from the 2002 GSS, the assertions of the theory of religious dogmatism (Jelen & Wilcox 1990) were tested by utilizing three increasing measure of religiosity: religious preference, church attendance, and Biblical perception in predicting support for atheist and homosexual civil liberties. The results support the notion of religious dogmatism as influencing acceptance of nonconformist civil liberties, with Biblical perception being the most potent predictor. Additional findings indicate education as a significant predictor of support for civil …

Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell Jan 2007

Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Welfare recipients have always been stigmatized. The welfare reform legislation of 1996 reflects widespread attitudes and stereotypes of welfare recipients, which are translated into the structure of state welfare programs and are carried down through the administration to the welfare caseworker—the “face” of welfare for recipients. Literature on welfare stigma has focused on clients, but not their caseworkers. Using qualitative methods, this paper presents a Goffmanian analysis of the effects of welfare stigma on these caseworkers, who not only interact with clients in their jobs everyday, but who also implement a stigmatizing social program. The caseworkers in this study constructed …

A Study Of The Pedagogy Of Selected Non-Western Musical Traditions In Collegiate World Music Ensembles., James B. Morford Jan 2007

A Study Of The Pedagogy Of Selected Non-Western Musical Traditions In Collegiate World Music Ensembles., James B. Morford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Music teachers are often influenced by pedagogical practices in the collegiate ensembles in which they performed. Opportunities to participate in collegiate world music ensembles have increased in recent decades; West African ensembles and steel bands represent the second and third most common of these in the United States. The absence of scholarly research regarding the nature of the teaching and learning processes that occur in these non-Western ensembles represents a significant problem in music education. In this study, two collegiate West African ensemble directors and two collegiate steel band directors were interviewed using an instrument developed by the researcher to …

Where It's At: Testing Urban Residential Preferences Of Creative And Noncreative Classes Of College Students., Robert Benjamin Travis Decola Jan 2007

Where It's At: Testing Urban Residential Preferences Of Creative And Noncreative Classes Of College Students., Robert Benjamin Travis Decola

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis uses data collected from a larger survey about residential preferences of undergraduate college students to show that a distinct group of creative students has a statistically significant preference for an urban residence. In addition to predicting urban residential preferences, students who have a creative major also have a significantly higher desire for bohemian cultural amenities. Regression results indicate that having a creative major mediates the direct effect of desiring bohemian cultural amenities on the preference for an urban residential environment. The evidence suggests that having a creative major socializes individuals into valuing bohemian cultural amenities in order to …

The Practice Of Law In The Peaceable Kingdom, Robert P. Burns Jan 2007

The Practice Of Law In The Peaceable Kingdom, Robert P. Burns

Georgia Law Review

Milner Ball would be the last person to claim to have constructed a system. After all, he writes in the essay form, one that is "tentative, reflective, suggestive, contradictory, and incomplete."' It is a style that suggests there is more afoot than any science or philosophy is likely to conceive and that much of what is most important has to be shown, not stated. Surely, the notion of a system, as in "the legal system," reflects many of the qualities that, as we will see, he is most at pains to criticize. However, there are definitely themes in his work …

This dissertation describes the results of a two year anthropological investigation into the concept of mental well being among the working class Afro-Surinamese population in Paramaribo, Suriname. More specifically, the research investigated how working class Afro-Surinamese in Paramaribo, Suriname define and maintain their sense of mental well-being, given their unique ethnic identity within a multi-ethnic and multicultural society, and given that their environment is heavily compromised by negative globalizing forces Over the course of two years a total of 62 people contributed information through group and individual interviews, which was supplemented by information obtained through participant observation. Findings show a …

Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak Jan 2007

Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This ethnographic dissertation research project examines HIV prevention programs in Warsaw, Poland to explore the concurrent processes of democratization and privatization as Poland begins European Union accession. As inherently political public health interventions, HIV prevention programs provoke discussions of risk and responsibility, and visions of the moral social order. Therefore, they can be used to understand the ways in which politically and socially marginalized populations invoke claims to citizenship status through attention to health issues. From an epidemiological perspective, HIV/AIDS arrived in Poland relatively late (1985) and never reached the anticipated epidemic levels. In the 1980s, drawing attention to the …

The Development And Test Of An Exchange-Based Model Of Interpersonal Workplace Exclusion, Kristin Damato Scott Jan 2007

The Development And Test Of An Exchange-Based Model Of Interpersonal Workplace Exclusion, Kristin Damato Scott

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The vast majority of social exclusion research has taken place outside of the workplace (i.e., in social settings). In addition, researchers often use a myriad of terms (i.e., ostracism, exclusion, rejection) when describing and investigating exclusion-related phenomena thus contributing to widespread conceptual confusion with respect to this construct. Moreover, past studies have failed to consider the role of social exchange in determining how individuals may react to being excluded by others particularly in a work setting. I sought to address these issues by conducting three multi-wave studies which develop and test a social-exchange based model of interpersonal workplace exclusion (IWE). …

The Law School Matrix: Reforming Legal Education In A Culture Of Competition And Conformity, Susan Sturm, Lani Guinier Jan 2007

The Law School Matrix: Reforming Legal Education In A Culture Of Competition And Conformity, Susan Sturm, Lani Guinier

Faculty Scholarship

Law school reform is in the air. Many reformers agree that the prevailing law school model developed in the nineteenth century does not adequately prepare students to become effective twenty-first century lawyers. Langdell's case method, designed around private domestic law, appellate cases, and the Socratic method, increasingly fails to teach students "how to think like a lawyer" in the world students will occupy. The curriculum over-emphasizes adjudication and discounts many of the important global, transactional, and facilitative dimensions of legal practice. Law school has too little to do with what lawyers actually do and develops too little of the institutional, …

The Argument From Justice, Or How Not To Reply To Legal Positivism, Joseph Raz Jan 2007

The Argument From Justice, Or How Not To Reply To Legal Positivism, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

Professor Robert Alexy wrote a book whose avowed purpose is to refute the basic tenets of a type of legal theory which 'has long since been obsolete in legal science and practice'. The quotation is from the German Federal Constitutional Court in 1968. The fact that Prof Alexy himself mentions no writings in the legal positivist tradition [in English] later than Hart's The Concept of Law (1961) may suggest that he shares the court's view. The book itself may be evidence to the contrary. After all why flog a dead horse? Why write a book to refute a totally discredited …

Architecting System Of Systems: Artificial Life Analysis Of Financial Market Behavior, Nil Hande Ergin Jan 2007

Architecting System Of Systems: Artificial Life Analysis Of Financial Market Behavior, Nil Hande Ergin

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research study focuses on developing a framework that can be utilized by system architects to understand the emergent behavior of system architectures. The objective is to design a framework that is modular and flexible in providing different ways of modeling sub-systems of System of Systems. At the same time, the framework should capture the adaptive behavior of the system since evolution is one of the key characteristics of System of Systems. Another objective is to design the framework so that humans can be incorporated into the analysis. The framework should help system architects understand the behavior as well as …

Risk And Protective Factors For Drug Use Among Polydrug-Using Urban Youth And Young Adults, Gary J. Burkholder, Jean J. Schensul, Raul Pino Jan 2007

Risk And Protective Factors For Drug Use Among Polydrug-Using Urban Youth And Young Adults, Gary J. Burkholder, Jean J. Schensul, Raul Pino

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of traditional risk and protective factors for drug use on six different popular drugs on a population that is primarily Black and Latino between the ages of 16 and 24. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the relative importance of risk and protective indexes, and their interaction, in predicting drug use. Findings suggested: (a) traditional risk and protective factors, as well as situationally specific factors such as gang involvement, predicted drug use; and
(b) the relative contribution of risk and protective factors toward explained variances differs substantially among the …
