An Interview With Fred Wilson, Mark Graham Jan 2007

An Interview With Fred Wilson, Mark Graham

Faculty Publications

Abstract The medium of artist Fred Wilson is the museum. He delves deep into museum collections to expose unexamined assumptions about power, place, privilege, and history. His installations include wall labels, educational materials, lighting, and non-traditional pairings of objects. His work is not only about the objects on display, but about how the whole museum environment can generate meaningful questions about art, history, and the role of the museum in its community. In this interview, Fred Wilson discusses how he works with the objects, places, and people that are part of the museum environment.

Gender Bending And Comic Books As Art: Issues Of Appropriation, Gender, And Sexuality In Japanese Art, Harley Blue Acres Jan 2007

Gender Bending And Comic Books As Art: Issues Of Appropriation, Gender, And Sexuality In Japanese Art, Harley Blue Acres

All ETDs from UAB

In Japanese high art, popular art (such as comic books and animation), theater, and music, representation of gender is a blurred line that is commonly crossed, more so than in the West. I argue that this fluidity is the result of disparate artistic sources that have filtered through Japanese culture since the Edo Period (1603-1867) with the flourishing of Kabuki Theater (in which men played women on stage) and the emergence of ukiyo-e (particularly shunga/erotica prints). This artistic lineage impacted arts of the Showa Period (1926-1989) notably Takarazuka Theater (which feature an exclusively female cast that portrays men) and the …

All ETDs from UAB

Purpose: Distraction osteogenesis (DO) using an external distraction device in the correction of maxillary hypoplasia (MH) in cleft lip and palate patients has been shown to be an effective and stable technique. The purpose of this study is to determine the outcome of skeletal stability for this procedure using the Rigid External Distraction (RED) System in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Materials and methods: Twenty CLP patients with moderate to severe maxillary hypoplasia were treated between June 2000 and June 2006. Their average age at the time of the surgery was 12.6 years. DO was started after a …

Balancing Ambition And Gender Among Decision Makers, Rebecca Hannagan, Christopher W. Larimer, Kevin B. Smith Jan 2007

Balancing Ambition And Gender Among Decision Makers, Rebecca Hannagan, Christopher W. Larimer, Kevin B. Smith

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In this article, we use an original laboratory experiment to test how people react to ambitious decision makers, allowing for interactions with gender. In the experiment, participants are told two decision makers will be dividing some valuable resource on their behalf. One decision maker (either high or low in ambition) is “appointed.” Participants vote from a slate of candidates, about whom they have information on gender and ambition, for the second decision maker. We find that people tend to associate high ambition with male and self-interested behavior and that the selection of the second decision maker depends on the level …

Holding Her Hand, Chris Ellen Lamb Jan 2007

Holding Her Hand, Chris Ellen Lamb

Masters Theses

The history of GLBTQ YA (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning Young Adult) literature has seen the introduction of very small amounts of fiction over the years. Publication of the first YA gay novel in 1969 opened the doors for many writers interested in pursuing the genre. However, even since this year (the year of the semi-liberation of gays during Stonewall) we have only seen a small amount of titles provided to young readers. In the past decade, interest has begun to turn to a more accepting, emotional and physical based portrayal of GLBTQ teens in their literature.

Since the onset …

The Methodic Of Hindu-Christian Studies, Raimon Panikkar Jan 2007

The Methodic Of Hindu-Christian Studies, Raimon Panikkar

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

After more than half a century struggling to find my own identity just following the universal sapiential counsel of "knowing oneself", whereby the self is not just the individual, the new editor of the Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies has put to me the most difficult question to answer in words: "Where do I now stand?". Aware that there are no stupid questions but certainly silly answers, I take the risk of summarizing my perhaps too many writings on this topic in these few pages, as a tribute to the magnificent task of this Journal, which is a practical example that …

Endowment Effects In Chimpanzees, Owen D. Jones, Sarah F. Brosnan, Susan P. Lambeth, Mary Catherine Mareno, Amanda S. Richardson, Steven Schapiro

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Human behavior is not always consistent with standard rational choice predictions. The much-investigated variety of apparent deviations from rational choice predictions provides a promising arena for the merger of economics and biology. Although little is known about the extent to which other species also exhibit these seemingly irrational patterns of human decision-making and choice behavior, similarities across species would suggest a common evolutionary root to the phenomena.

The present study investigated whether chimpanzees exhibit an endowment effect, a seemingly paradoxical behavior in which humans tend to value a good they have just come to possess more than they would have …

性別話語的協商 : 中國當代婦女研究對女性主義話語的接受與建構(1980-2000), Wai Pang Cheng Jan 2007

性別話語的協商 : 中國當代婦女研究對女性主義話語的接受與建構(1980-2000), Wai Pang Cheng

Lingnan Theses

African Religious Integration In Florida During The First Spanish Period, Christopher Beats Jan 2007

African Religious Integration In Florida During The First Spanish Period, Christopher Beats

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of the unique conditions for African-descended slaves in St. Augustine, Florida, during the First Spanish Period. St. Augustine was an important garrison at a remote point in the Spanish Empire at the edge of a hostile frontier. As such, economics were less a priority than defense. Slaves, therefore, received different treatment here than in English colonies or even other Spanish colonies. Due to the threat of Protestantism, religious adherence was more important as a test of loyalty than ethnicity and slaves and freed-people were able to integrate better than in other Spanish holdings. In order …

Genetic And Phenotypic Evolution In The Ornate Chorus Frog (Pseudacris Ornata): Testing The Relative Roles Of Natural Selection,, Jacob Degner Jan 2007

Genetic And Phenotypic Evolution In The Ornate Chorus Frog (Pseudacris Ornata): Testing The Relative Roles Of Natural Selection,, Jacob Degner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding how migration, genetic drift, and natural selection interact to maintain the genetic and phenotypic variation we observe in natural populations is a central goal of population genetics. Amphibians provide excellent model organisms for investigating the interplay between these evolutionary forces because amphibians are generally characterized by limited dispersal abilities, high philopatry, and are obligately associated with the areas around suitable habitats (e.g. breeding ponds). Thus, on relatively small geographic scales, the relative effects of all of these evolutionary forces can be studied together. Here, we study the interaction of migration, genetic drift, natural selection, and historical process in the …

The Emergence Of The Maya Tlaloc: A Late Classic Religious Icon, Amanda Toyie Groff Jan 2007

The Emergence Of The Maya Tlaloc: A Late Classic Religious Icon, Amanda Toyie Groff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Iconography has the capability to memorialize and guarantee one's place in history; iconography can also provide powerful insight into human culture, and explore social and cultural values in a visual manner. Iconography can incorporate information about group identities, allegiances, religious affiliations, propaganda, and acceptance within both modern and ancient societies. By studying a specific iconographic figure, the Central Mexican god Tlaloc, as a visual representation of a belief or identity, we can glean a greater understanding of the cultural transmission of iconographic symbols. The substantial use of this icon, in both Central Mexico and the Maya region, reveals iconography as …

The Shield Bearing Warriors Of Bear Gulch: A Look At Prehistoric Warrior Identity In Rock Art And Places Of Power, Melissa Marie Ray Jan 2007

The Shield Bearing Warriors Of Bear Gulch: A Look At Prehistoric Warrior Identity In Rock Art And Places Of Power, Melissa Marie Ray

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Centuries ago prehistoric warriors carved and painted their identities on the sandstone cliffs of Bear Gulch 24FR002. Bear Gulch is the premier shield bearing warrior site on the Northern Plains; in fact it holds the most shield bearing warriors known on the Northern Plains at a single site. Shield bearing warrior consists of an anthropomorph with a shield for a body, a head, feet, and weapons or flags protruding out from behind the shield. At Bear Gulch there are elaborate headdresses, flags, shields, weapons, bustles, and wolf tail moccasins. Many of these elements are only found in the ethnographic literature …

Umfc #66 A Comprehensive Case Report, Jeffery Adam Schiel

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

University of Montana Forensic Case #66 has been used as a teaching tool for many years. Little written information is available on the origin of this case. Information on the date of recovery is not available, nor are the circumstances surrounding the recovery. My goal in this report is to understand more about this case, particularly age at death, ancestry, and pathology. This case is particularly intriguing because it presents a textbook example of osteomyelitis, a pathological condition. Additionally, it is of significance to the history of the area because of its recovery in the state of Montana. As a …

The Tongue River Bison Jump (24rb2135): The Technological Organization Of Late Prehistoric Period Hunter-Gatherers In Southeastern Montana, Joseph Shawn Hamilton

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Bison hunting has long been recognized as a key element of the lifeways of American Indians of the Northwestern Plains. Bison served as an integral component for food, shelter, tools, and clothing. It is no surprise that the importance bison hunting, as a socioeconomic institution, is revealed in the archaeological record of this region. A study of the material culture, most often lithic tools, found at prehistoric bison kills and processing sites allows archaeologists to draw inferences about the technology associated with the procurement of such vital animals. An investigation of bison jump, trap or pound lithic assemblage can provide …

Public Archaeology In Montana: A Sample Of University Of Montana Students' Perceptions Of Archaeology And Knowledge Of Local Sites, Helen Alexandra Keremedjiev

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archaeologists have an obligation to disseminate publicly their research and theories. To do this effectively, they need to know how each public perceives archaeology. A voluntary Institutional Review Board certified questionnaire was given to 606 University of Montana undergraduates and graduates. It included topics on the basics of archaeology and sites in Montana. After the results were tabulated, a website was created to show the overall results. Its location is at www.umt.edu/publicarchaeology. This online resource includes the questionnaire, the total raw results of all classes’ responses, and a discussion section. (See Appendix E for screenshot images of the website.) This …

A Modern Examination Of Marcus Goldstein’S Mexican Immigrant Population Data: Comparisons Of Mexican-Born And U.S.-Born Children And Adults Living In 1930’S America And Mexico, Amanda Katelin Gango

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Modern statistical methods were employed in order to test the statistical validity and conclusions of Marcus Goldstein’s (1943) original data consisting of nineteen different anthropometric measurements on two different groups of individuals, Mexican immigrants and their children residing in the San Antonio, Texas area and Mexican natives living in central and northern Mexico. Using independent samples T-tests, an analysis of covariance, and an RMET analysis, significant differences among variables compared between Mexican natives and Mexican immigrants and their U.S. born children were identified and interpreted. Variation was attributed to geographical location and length of time spent in the United States. …

Inequality And Civic Participation In The Rocky Mountain West: Missoula, Mt, Benjamin C. Harris Jan 2007

Inequality And Civic Participation In The Rocky Mountain West: Missoula, Mt, Benjamin C. Harris

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study considers the impact of community-level inequality of income and education on the ways individuals participate in local government and community development activities. It adapts the standard identity-augmented utility model to demonstrate that, given the choice to participate or not to participate, increases in inequality can decrease overall group participation, and an individual's distance from the characteristics of an ideal community member can also decrease the benefits and likelihood of participation. The theory predicts, however, that increasing the responsiveness of civic bodies to input from citizens can mitigate the negative effects of inequality. Original survey data from a stratified …

From Meaning To Form: An Alternative Model Of Functional Syntax, Arto Mustajoki Jan 2007

From Meaning To Form: An Alternative Model Of Functional Syntax, Arto Mustajoki

Russian Language Journal

The purpose of this article is to introduce a model for a meaning-based functional syntax. A full description of the model may be found in our recent monograph (Mustajoki 2006b). Work on the model has been carried out in the Department of Slavonic and Baltic Languages and Literature at the University of Helsinki over the last fifteen years. Given that the above-mentioned book and various shorter publications (Mustajoki 1997, 1999, 2003a, 2003b, 2004) have appeared in Russian, it seems appropriate to give a short overview of the model in English. The only presentation of the model in English thus far …

Self-Reported Russian And Belarusian Language Utilization In Key Economic, Political, And Social Domains In Belarus, N. Anthony Brown Jan 2007

Self-Reported Russian And Belarusian Language Utilization In Key Economic, Political, And Social Domains In Belarus, N. Anthony Brown

Russian Language Journal

The elicitation of language usage in the present study was carried out by means of a survey. Language utilization was surveyed in the home, in school, at work, and in government institutions to ascertain whether a functional hierarchy of domains in Belarusian and/or Russian obtains in Belarus. In addition, the study examines whether domain-specific language utilization varies according to participants’ sex. Respondents were asked to evaluate choice of language as “useful” or “necessary” for each domain. Findings reflect self-reports from 559 students born in Belarus and attending eight different institutions of higher education, cumulatively. Data were collected in three cities, …

Proverbial Language And Its Role In Acquiring A Second Language And Culture, Natalya Vanyushkina Jan 2007

Proverbial Language And Its Role In Acquiring A Second Language And Culture, Natalya Vanyushkina

Russian Language Journal

Researchers in the domain of Russian as a foreign and a second language have paid relatively little attention to proverbs as units of linguistic and cultural expression. Due to this neglect and the overall scarcity of statistical data on current Russian proverbial language, many Russian textbooks and dictionaries offer at best some outdated proverbs that have fallen into disuse in contemporary Russia and at worst, disregard proverbial language altogether. However, this expressive language deserves much more serious consideration from both researchers and teachers of Russian. Russian native speakers take it for granted that their interlocutors share the assumptions behind proverbs, …
