Folklore/Cinema: Popular Film As Vernacular Culture, Sharon R. Sherman, Mikel J. Koven
Folklore/Cinema: Popular Film As Vernacular Culture, Sharon R. Sherman, Mikel J. Koven
All USU Press Publications
Interest in the conjunctions of film and folklore is stronger and more diverse than ever. Documentaries on folk life and expression remain a vital genre, but scholars such as Sharon Sherman and Mikel Koven also are exploring how folklore elements appear in, and merge with, popular cinema. They look at how movies, a popular culture medium, can as well be both a medium and type of folklore, playing cultural roles and conveying meanings customarily found in other folkloric forms. They thus use the methodology of folklore studies to analyze films made for commercial distribution. The contributors to this book look …
Cultural Factors As Co-Determinants Of Participation In River Basin Management, Bert Enserink, Mita Patel, Nicole Kranz, Josefina Maestu
Cultural Factors As Co-Determinants Of Participation In River Basin Management, Bert Enserink, Mita Patel, Nicole Kranz, Josefina Maestu
All UNF Research
Finding a place for public participation in the policies and practices of European river basin management planning is a challenge for the authorities in the participating countries and territories. Understanding the relation between national culture, the historical and political differences in the respective countries, and their practical experience with participation is considered important to support the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive. Knowledge and understanding of this relation is important to provide a context and basis from which new participatory practices can be designed and experiences evaluated and to identify conditions necessary for social learning. Within the context of …
Improving The Effectiveness Of Interventions To Balance Conservation And Development: A Conceptual Framework, S. Garnett, J. Sayer, Johan T. Du Toit
Improving The Effectiveness Of Interventions To Balance Conservation And Development: A Conceptual Framework, S. Garnett, J. Sayer, Johan T. Du Toit
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
There are numerous case studies around the world describing integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs). Recently some localized syntheses have been published that use sophisticated statistics to identify patterns and causal linkages, but no attempt has yet been made to draw together lessons from across the globe. This paper is an attempt to provide a framework for such an analysis. A set of lessons is proposed for improving the prospects of ICDPs by giving consideration to each of the five capitals: natural, social, human, built, and financial. The language of ICDPs has been adopted by development agencies of all persuasions. …

Patterns Of Prejudice: Social Exclusion And Racial Demarcation In Professional Accountancy In Kenya, S. Sian
Patterns Of Prejudice: Social Exclusion And Racial Demarcation In Professional Accountancy In Kenya, S. Sian
Accounting Historians Journal
Racial demarcation and social exclusion were common features in the organization of racially diverse colonial societies. British settlement in colonial Kenya and the import of immigrant workers resulted in the creation of a hierarchical society in which the Europeans enjoyed privileges to the exclusion of the immigrant Asians and the indigenous Africans. This study sets out to show how changes in the organization of this society and commonly held prejudices within it were reflected and even amplified in the organization of the accountancy profession. Drawing from archival and oral history data, the study traces the patterns of participation in accountancy …
An Ethnographic Study Of Clothing Production In Lima, Peru, Brandon E. Rouleau
An Ethnographic Study Of Clothing Production In Lima, Peru, Brandon E. Rouleau
Digitized Theses
This thesis draws on three months of multi-sited ethnographie research conducted in Lima, Peru. Initially, the aim was to understand how micro and small-scale textile producers in Gamarra internalize global fashion trends, however, it eventually became necessary to include actors outside of Gamarra. This thesis problematizes what it means to "copy" by viewing the activities of small-scale textile producers as tactics to resist the strategies deployed by department stores, brands, and the government to channel and control their activities. In addition, I consider the relationship that local small-scale textile production may play in challenging the distinctions between different social groups …
Modeling Fertility And Demography In A Roman Period Population Sample From Kellis 2, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, Jennifer Sharman
Modeling Fertility And Demography In A Roman Period Population Sample From Kellis 2, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, Jennifer Sharman
Digitized Theses
This thesis addressed the issue of paleodemographic life tables being a record of fertility more than mortality. I have shown that the assumption of stationarity, which is typical in paleodemography, is not valid in a sample population from Roman period Kellis 2, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. This sample was tested for representativeness, and was used to model the effects of non-stationarity on fertility. Model tables were used to analyze representativeness, and the nearby Kharga Oasis provided a starting annual growth rate of 1.48%. Isotopic data on weaning age were used to model further fertility parameters. These data showed that Kellis 2 …
Lithic Identities: Developing A Typology Of Tsimshian Stone-Tools, Brian E. Pritchard
Lithic Identities: Developing A Typology Of Tsimshian Stone-Tools, Brian E. Pritchard
Digitized Theses
Inferring group identity from material culture has been a goal of archaeology almost since the inception of the discipline. Identifying past cultures and groups of people using lithic materials in particular is especially problematic given the restrictive nature of stone-tools where distinguishing between purely stylistic, functional and technological elements is difficult to do. Using the concept of isochrestic variation as a framework for studying style and the unintentional signaling of group identity in material culture, this thesis analyzes stone-tools manufactured by ancestral First Nations Tsimshian and compares them to similar stone-tools manufactured by other groups of people on the Pacific …
Growth And Development And Paleopathological Analysis Of Ancient Northern Chilean Populations As Related To Possible Arsenic Poisoning, Christine Elisabeth Bostonnn, Christine Elisabeth Boston
Growth And Development And Paleopathological Analysis Of Ancient Northern Chilean Populations As Related To Possible Arsenic Poisoning, Christine Elisabeth Bostonnn, Christine Elisabeth Boston
Digitized Theses
his thesis tests the hypothesis that the populations in northern Chile were more adversely affected than other populations in the Andean cordillera by the arsenic in the region. A paleopathological and growth and development study was undertaken to test this hypothesis. The skeletal sample represented by 199 skeletons from the Chinchorro, Quiani, Faldas del Morro, Gentilar, and Inca periods. Arsenic related congenital pathological lesions included cleft palate and lip, polydactylism, syndactylism, clubfoot, spina bifida, eye malformation, hip joint displacement, and skin malformations. The growth and development part of this study compared long bone lengths of the sampled populations to populations …

The Influence Of Scientific Claims On An Emerging Environmental Issue, Beth Ann Schaberg
The Influence Of Scientific Claims On An Emerging Environmental Issue, Beth Ann Schaberg
ETD Archive
The environmental movement relies on scientific claims to justify its calls for protectionist policies. These claims can be followed in the scientific literature using bibliometric methods such as citation analysis. Citation analysis was used to deconstruct the literature of endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) sciences as it emerged and developed time from 1980 through 2004. This study explored how the attributes of scientific papers such as topic, journal, experimental model, document type, and support or negation of hypotheses impacted their influence (quantified as times cited) within the field over time. To accomplish this, unique bibliographic data were acquired for each attribute …

Becoming A Nun, Becoming A Man: Taiwanese Buddhist Nuns’ Gender Transformation, Hillary Crane
Becoming A Nun, Becoming A Man: Taiwanese Buddhist Nuns’ Gender Transformation, Hillary Crane
Faculty Publications
This paper explores apparent contradictions in the gender identifications of Taiwanese Buddhist nuns. Because the texts and teachings of their tradition provide conflicting messages about women's spiritual abilities, the nuns create a complex gender cosmology as a means to accommodate textual contradictions without rejecting any textual statements. This strategy allows the nuns to assert that they have spiritual abilities equal to those of men without rejecting or contradicting textual statements that they do not. Without denying that they are women (and that they are therefore threatening to men) the nuns primarily identify with the male gender. Compartmentalizing and contextualizing gender …
