Put That In Your Thurible And Smoke It: Religious Gerrymandering Of Sacramental Intoxication, Mark A. Levine Jan 2007

Put That In Your Thurible And Smoke It: Religious Gerrymandering Of Sacramental Intoxication, Mark A. Levine

ExpressO

In February 2006, the Supreme Court ruled on the case Gonzales v. O Centro Beneficente Uniao do Vegetal, granting an injunction permitting the use of ayahuasca, a plant containing the Schedule I substance Dimethyltryptamine, for sacramental intoxication purposes. The unanimous Court justified this injunction by comparing the Uniao do Vegetal's use of the illegal substance with the Native American Church's use of peyote, which contains another Schedule I substance, mescaline. This ruling is incomptabile with lower court rulings rejecting the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church use of marijuana, consistently stating that the Native American Church has rights beyond those of other …

How Do We Deal With This Mess? A Primer For State And Local Governments On Navigating The Legal Complexities Of Debris Issues Following Mass Disasters, Ryan M. Seidemann, Megan K. Terrell, Christopher D. Matchett

ExpressO

The devastation wrought by the 2005 hurricane season brought into bold relief the need for comprehensive debris management plans in the United States. As cleanup efforts commenced following Hurricane Katrina, it became abundantly apparent that the local governments were not prepared to deal with the massive scope of the debris problem.

Disasters will occur. It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. The entire nation is at risk of being struck by some type of disaster at some time. The best way to deal with the outfall from these disasters is to be prepared for them …

The Political Economy Of Everyday Life: Working Children In Curvelo, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Marcia Mikulak Jan 2007

The Political Economy Of Everyday Life: Working Children In Curvelo, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Marcia Mikulak

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Numerous articles about working children in Brazil focus on HIV-Aids, child labor, crime, and petty thievery; however, social science literature does not analyze their positive contributions. From the perspective of working children, this article discusses the contributions that they make to their families as they navigate between home, school, and the informal labor market. Data are presented on the types of work that working children perform, time spent working, money eared, and contributions to their family household incomes. In addition, this article argues that the lack of extra-familial support networks within favelas contributes to the high numbers of children working …

Review Of Disputed Territories: Land, Culture And Identity In Settler Societies, Edited By D. Trigger And G. Griffiths, Christina E. Dando

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The phrase “disputed territories” can represent a great many things, from actual land to the metaphor of academic turf. The landscapes of Australasia and southern Africa have long been, and continue to be, disputed territories. This volume developed out of a year-long program of interdisciplinary seminars entitled “Land, Place, Culture, Identity” at the University of Western Australia, which explored the intersection of history, representation, and identity in Australasia and southern Africa. The volume’s ten essays explore the “imaginative possession” of the land (p. 3), and cover a range of topics in both historical and contemporary settings. The contributions roam widely, …
