Feeding The World One Seed At A Time: A Practical Alternative For Solving World Hunger, Frank Tenente Jan 2007

Feeding The World One Seed At A Time: A Practical Alternative For Solving World Hunger, Frank Tenente

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

This paper explores the effectiveness of current foreign aid food programs in providing underdeveloped countries, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, with the ability to solve hunger within those countries. More specifically, this paper advocates for the integration of genetically modified agricultural seeds into current foreign food aid programs. The science behind genetically modified seeds is briefly explored, along with the international covenants and declarations that deal with the "right to food." This paper discusses the advantages of providing genetically modified agricultural seeds to rural farming communities within Sub-Saharan Africa, and how such food aid would curb hunger levels in those countries. As …

Differential Classical Conditioning Of The Gill-Withdrawal Reflex In Aplysia Recruits Both Nmda Receptor-Dependent Enhancement And Nmda Receptor-Dependent Depression Of The Reflex, Shekib A. Jami, William G. Wright, David L. Glanzman Jan 2007

Glanzman

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Differential classical conditioning of the gill-withdrawal response (GWR) in Aplysia can be elicited by training in which a conditioned stimulus (CS) delivered to one side of the siphon (the CS+) is paired with a noxious unconditioned stimulus (US; tail shock), while a second conditioned stimulus (the CS-), delivered to a different siphon site, is unpaired with the US. NMDA receptor(NMDAR) activation has been shown previously to be critical for nondifferential classical conditioning in Aplysia. Here, we used a semi-intact preparation to test whether differential classical conditioning of the GWR also depends on activation of NMDARs. Differential training produced conditioned enhancement …

Language is like the cane in the hand of the blind person. The better one becomes at getting around with the cane, the more he or she is apt to forget the cane but through the cane perceive the objects scraped and tapped by the other end. A defective cane may distort the world perceived by the blind person. So too, defective use of language threatens to muddy our understanding of the things we talk about. When discussing something as difficult as natural evils, a frequently undetected defect in our language use is “overly attenuated description.” In this piece, I …

Revisiting Hafemeister’S ‘Science And Society’ Tests, Robert J. Brecha, Rex L. Berney, Bruce A. Craver

Physics Faculty Publications

We revisit a series of papers on science and society issues by David Hafemeister in the 1970s and 1980s. The emphasis in the present work is on world oil production limits and some consequences of various possible scenarios for the near future. Some of the data and scenarios used by Hafemeister are updated for U.S. oil production in the past two decades and extended to an analysis of a peak in world oil production in the future. We discuss some simple scenarios for future energy use patterns and look at the consequence of these scenarios as world oil production begins …

Stock Assessment And Management Of The Egyptian Sole Solea Aegyptiaca Chabanaud, 1927 (Osteichthyes: Soleidae), In The Southeastern Mediterranean, Egypt, Sahar Fahmy Mehanna

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Aspects of the population dynamics of the Egyptian sole, Solea aegyptiaca, which is a commercially important endemic and demersal flatfish species in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters, were described based on materials collected monthly between February 2004 and May 2005 from the fishing harbor at Port Said city. Age and growth studies based on sagittal otoliths revealed that this species is relatively fast growing with a maximum age of 4 years. Marginal increment analysis suggested that bands on sagittae are deposited once a year during the winter. Mean back-calculated total lengths ranged from 17.75 cm at age I to 28.22 cm …

Detection Of The Eaea Gene In Escherichia Coli From Chickens By Polymerase Chain Reaction, Ayşe Kiliç, Hasan Basri̇ Ertaş, Adi̇le Muz, Gökben Özbey, Hakan Kalender

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to isolate Escherichia coli from chickens and to determine the presence of the eaeA gene, a virulence factor detected in E. coli, in the isolates by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Different chicken organs were inoculated onto blood agar and biochemical tests were performed on the suspicious isolates. E. coli was isolated from 48% (48/100) of the samples. DNA was extracted from these isolates and was amplified by PCR, using a pair of primers derived from the eaeA (virulence) gene. In the agarose gel examination of PCR products, 48% (48/100) of the isolates were determined …

The Other Side Of The Picket Line: Contract, Democracy, And Power In A Law School Classroom, Michael Fischl

Faculty Articles and Papers

his essay - from a forthcoming symposium on teaching from the left in the NYU Review of Law & Social Change - offers an account of the successful union organizing campaign among custodial and landscaping workers at the University of Miami during the 2005-06 academic year, focusing in particular on the role played by faculty during the course of the campaign. It examines a fractious debate generated by faculty who held classes off campus in order to support the striking workers and the author's own decision to put the question of whether to honor the picket line to a vote …

Geography And International Law: Towards A Postcolonial Mapping, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 2007

Geography And International Law: Towards A Postcolonial Mapping, Tayyab Mahmud

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Postcolonial theory aims at a critical interrogation of legitimizing knowledge claims put forward by proponents of the resurgent Empire. This article undertakes such an interrogation at the intersection of geography and international law. It aims to demonstrate that both modern geography and modern international law were constituted in, by, and through imperatives of Empire and unavoidably bear traces of their formative origin. The aim is to theorize the spatiality of global relations of domination and resistance under the shadow of international law. The article first identifies the vantage point of this critical engagement, namely postcolonial approach to inquiry. It then …

Wrong Way Corrigan And Recent Developments In The Nonprofit Landscape: A Need For New Legal Approaches, James J. Fishman Jan 2007

Wrong Way Corrigan And Recent Developments In The Nonprofit Landscape: A Need For New Legal Approaches, James J. Fishman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This essay argues that some of the assumptions by which we view and regulate the nonprofit sector are traveling, as did Wrong Way Corrigan, in the wrong direction. This is due to faulty assumptions about the nonprofit universe, overreactions to perceived problems, and a reluctance to consider innovative approaches to existing problems. This essay examines some of the erroneous assumptions, discusses recent legislative initiatives, and suggests that there is a need for more than incremental approaches when considering the nonprofit landscape. It argues that regulation of fiduciary behavior should be at the local level, or a combination of local and …

Correction Factors For Body Mass In Military Physical Fitness Tests, Paul M. Vanderburgh Jan 2007

Correction Factors For Body Mass In Military Physical Fitness Tests, Paul M. Vanderburgh

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Recent research findings combined with the theoretical laws of biological similarity make the compelling case that all physical fitness test items for the Army, Air Force, and Navy impose a 15-20% physiologic bias against heavier, not fatter, men and women. Using the published findings that actual scores of muscle and aerobic endurance scale by body mass raised to the 1/3 power, correction factor tables were developed. This correction factor can be multiplied by one’s actual score (e.g., push-ups, sit-ups, abdominal crunches, or curl-ups repetitions or distance run time) to yield adjusted scores that are free of body mass bias. These …

Contamination Of Childhood Fairy Tale: Pre-Service Teachers Explore Gender And Race Constructions, Wan-Hsiang Chou Jan 2007

Contamination Of Childhood Fairy Tale: Pre-Service Teachers Explore Gender And Race Constructions, Wan-Hsiang Chou

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This study explores the possibilities of challenging European-American middle-class social codes perpetuated by fairy tales through creative writing and artmaking. For centuries, writers and artists have continued to create new versions of old tales. Critiquing through recreation of fairy tales can reveal biases of personal and cultural constructions of race and gender. Like authors and illustrators of children's books, 25 pre-service teachers were invited to "contaminate" fairy tales from their childhood, through which to become aware of metaphors they live by and explore where and how pre-existing codes entered their lives. Their retellings of traditional tales and accompanying illustrations show …

Relationship Of Plasma Ghrelin Concentrations With End-Products Of Carbohydrate Fermentation For Beef Cattle During A Feeding Interval, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Jay Daniel, Jeff Clapper, Allen Trenkle, Donald Beitz Jan 2007

Relationship Of Plasma Ghrelin Concentrations With End-Products Of Carbohydrate Fermentation For Beef Cattle During A Feeding Interval, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Jay Daniel, Jeff Clapper, Allen Trenkle, Donald Beitz

South Dakota Beef Report, 2007

Four steers (BW 1281±28.2 lb) were used to determine the relationship of plasma ghrelin concentrations with end-products of carbohydrate fermentation and hormones and metabolites indicative of nutrition status during a 12-h feeding interval. A common high-energy diet was offered at 240% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (2.4xM) or 80% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (0.8xM). At initiation of period I, 2 steers were allowed 2.4xM intake, whereas intake for the remaining 2 steers was restricted to 0.8xM. Equal aliquots of feed were offered at 0800 and at 2000 h. On 7, 14, and 21 d following …
