Homestead National Monument Of America Bur Oak Forest Restoration Plan: Reference Condition And Management Considerations, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The Vegetation Management Action Plan for Homestead National Monument of America includes a statement of the desired future condition that states: "The monument's natural resources are managed in such a way as to maintain a heterogeneous landscape composed of a mosaic of high quality remnant and restored tallgrass prairie, lowland bur oak forest and associated ecotones, as well as prairie streams and their hydrologic processes; that reflects the value of the site as a homestead, represents as accurately as possible the environment encountered by early settlers, and preserves native biodiversity" (Bolli 2006). The lowland bur oak forest along Cub Creek …

Ethics As Style, Leslie Connolly Jan 2007

Ethics As Style, Leslie Connolly

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Throughout this paper I discuss the idea of ethics being represented through text. How a given newspaper chooses to write a certain word can let the reader understand a little more about the papers ethical framework and history. I compare and contrast the New York Times style choices to the Associated Press style choices and ultimately compare them to different ethical codes and theories. A stylebook for The Otter Realm was also designed in conjunction with this research paper. I listed unique words encountered on our campus so that future generations of Otter Realm staff can have a consistent reference …

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present 3-dimensional volume-rendered in vivo images of developing embryos of the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis taken with our new en-face-scanning, focus-tracking OCM system at 1300 nm wavelength. Compared to our older instrument which operates at 850 nm, we measure a decrease in the attenuation coefficient by 33%, leading to a substantial improvement in depth penetration. Both instruments have motion-sensitivity capability. By evaluating the fast Fourier transform of the fringe signal, we can produce simultaneously images displaying the fringe amplitude of the backscattered light and images showing the random Brownian motion of the scatterers. We present time-lapse movies of …

Abn Morning Session, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Folks, I've been asked to talk with you today about my vision for the future, so let's get right to it. First, my vision is this: Agriculture will remain Nebraska's leading industry. It's importance will grow in our state. It already has. In 1990 one in four Nebraskans depended upon agriculture in some way for their livelihood. Last year Dr. Charles Lamphear told us it's one in three in his study for the Nebraska Policy Institute.

A Comprehensive Guide To Fuels Treatment Practices For Ponderosa Pine In The Black Hills, Colorado Front Range, And Southwest, Molly E. Hunter, Wayne D. Shepperd, Leigh B. Lentile, John D. Lundquist, Michael G. Andreu, Jack L. Butler, Frederick W. Smith

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

The objective of this paper is to present recommendations for fuels treatments in ponderosa pine forests in the Southwest, Colorado Front Range, and Black Hills of South Dakota. We have synthesized existing knowledge from the peer-reviewed literature and administrative studies and acquired local knowledge through a series of discussions with fuels treatment practitioners. We describe specific treatments, the circumstances under which they can be applied, and treatment effects. We provide recommendations related to where, how, and how often fuels treatments may be prescribed to achieve desired outcomes. Desired outcomes address social, political, economic, and ecological factors.

Birth Of An Institution: Horace Gray And The Lost Law Clerks, Todd C. Peppers

Scholarly Articles

In a vault hidden away in a downtown Boston bank rests a large silver loving cup. The cup was presented to Associate Justice Horace Gray on March 22, 1902 by his law clerks, and engraved on its tarnished surface are the names of the nineteen Harvard Law School graduates who served as Justice Gray’s law clerks. While the details surrounding the presentation of the cup have been lost to history, the gift was likely prompted by the failing health of Justice Gray and his future departure from the Supreme Court. The loving cup is still held by the Gray family, …

A Scale-Free Systems Theory Of Motivation And Addiction, R. Andrew Chambers, Warren K. Bickel, Marc N. Potenza Jan 2007

A Scale-Free Systems Theory Of Motivation And Addiction, R. Andrew Chambers, Warren K. Bickel, Marc N. Potenza

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Scale-free organizations, characterized by uneven distributions of linkages between nodal elements, describe the structure and function of many life-based complex systems developing under evolutionary pressures. We explore motivated behavior as a scale-free map toward a comprehensive translational theory of addiction. Motivational and behavioral repertoires are reframed as link and nodal element sets, respectively, comprising a scale-free structure. These sets are generated by semi-independent information-processing streams within cortical–striatal circuits that cooperatively provide decision-making and sequential processing functions necessary for traversing maps of motivational links connecting behavioral nodes. Dopamine modulation of cortical–striatal plasticity serves a central-hierarchical mechanism for survival-adaptive sculpting and development …

Targeted Disruption Of The Glutaredoxin 1 Gene Does Not Sensitize Adult Mice To Tissue Injury Induced By Ischemia/Reperfusion And Hyperoxia, Ye-Shih Ho, Ye Xiong, Dorothy S. Ho, Jinping Gao, Balvin H.L. Chua, Harish Pai, John J. Mieyal Jan 2007

Targeted Disruption Of The Glutaredoxin 1 Gene Does Not Sensitize Adult Mice To Tissue Injury Induced By Ischemia/Reperfusion And Hyperoxia, Ye-Shih Ho, Ye Xiong, Dorothy S. Ho, Jinping Gao, Balvin H.L. Chua, Harish Pai, John J. Mieyal

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

To understand the physiological function of glutaredoxin, a thiotransferase catalyzing the reduction of mixed disulfides of protein and glutathione, we generated a line of knockout mice deficient in the cytosolic glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1). To our surprise, mice deficient in Grx1 were not more susceptible to acute oxidative insults in models of heart and lung injury induced by ischemia/reperfusion and hyperoxia, respectively, suggesting that either changes in S-glutathionylation status of cytosolic proteins are not the major cause of such tissue injury or developmental adaptation in the Glrx1-knockout animals alters the response to oxidative insult. In contrast, mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) …

Early Life Stress And Novelty Seeking Behavior In Adolescent Monkeys, Karen J. Parker, Kimberly L. Rainwater, Christine L. Buckmaster, Alan F. Schatzberg, Steven E. Lindley, David M. Lyons Jan 2007

Early Life Stress And Novelty Seeking Behavior In Adolescent Monkeys, Karen J. Parker, Kimberly L. Rainwater, Christine L. Buckmaster, Alan F. Schatzberg, Steven E. Lindley, David M. Lyons

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Recent evidence suggests that early exposure to mild stress promotes the development of novelty seeking behavior. Here we test this hypothesis in squirrel monkeys and investigate whether novelty seeking behavior is associated with differences in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA), the dopamine metabolite homovanillic acid (HVA), the norepinephrine metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol (MHPG), and the neuropeptide corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF). Monkeys were randomized early in life to either mild intermittent stress (IS) or no stress (NS) conditions, and subsequently presented with opportunities to interact with a familiar or novel object in a test box that was …

An Inventory Of The Vascular Flora Of Hamilton County, Iowa (2001-2004), Jimmie D. Thompson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A botanical survey of the vascular flora of Hamilton County, Iowa was conducted from 2001 to 2004. During this survey 973 taxa (761 native) were encountered. A search of the literature and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for additional documented specimens added 28 taxa to the flora. This total of 1001 taxa places Hamilton County fourth in vascular plant richness among inventories conducted in Iowa since 1950. A checklist including common names of most taxa, habitat and abundance data for all taxa encountered during the current survey is presented. Information on earlier collections includes source and …

Fall And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) In Iowa, Kelcey J. Brockmeyer, William R. Clark Jan 2007

Fall And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) In Iowa, Kelcey J. Brockmeyer, William R. Clark

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a widely distributed native felid of North America but nearly disappeared from Iowa due to habitat loss and unregulated harvest that occurred during the century after European settlement. Bobcats are repopulating the state and are now relatively common in southern Iowa. This study was part of a research project to understand the ecology of the species in Iowa's landscape so that conservation plans could be established. We determined food habits by the examination of stomach contents from 100 bobcat carcasses that were accidentally killed in traps, killed by automobiles, or radio-marked individuals found dead during …

Nitric Oxide And Cgmp Signaling In Calcium-Dependent Development Of Cell Polarity In Ceratopteris Richardii, Mari L. Salmi, Kacey E. Morris, Stanley J. Roux, D. Marshall Porterfield Jan 2007

Nitric Oxide And Cgmp Signaling In Calcium-Dependent Development Of Cell Polarity In Ceratopteris Richardii, Mari L. Salmi, Kacey E. Morris, Stanley J. Roux, D. Marshall Porterfield

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single-celled spores of the fern Ceratopteris richardii undergo gravity-directed cell polarity development that is driven by polar calcium currents. Here we present results that establish a role for nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP signaling in transducing the stimulus of gravity to directed polarization of the spores. Application of specific NO donors and scavengers inhibited the calcium-dependent gravity response in a dose-dependent manner. the effects of NO donor exposure were antagonized by application of NO scavenger compounds. Similarly, the guanylate cyclase inhibitors 6-anilino-5,8- quinolinedione and 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin, and the phosphodiesterase inhibitor Viagra, which modulate NO-dependent cGMP levels in the cells, disrupted gravity-directed cell polarity …
