Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

With 2005 retail sales close to $4.8 million, cultured dairy products are driving the growth of dairy foods consumption. Starter cultures are of great industrial significance in that they play a vital role in the manufacturing, flavor, and texture development of fermented dairy foods. Furthermore, additional interest in starter bacteria has been generated because of the data accumulating on the potential health benefits of these organisms. Today, starter cultures for fermented foods are developed mainly by design rather than by the traditional screening methods and trial and error. Advances in genetics and molecular biology have provided opportunities for genomic studies …

A Parent Handbook For Family Childcare Programs, Suzanne Kansteiner

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A Parent Handbook for Family Childcare Programs Most parents who need childcare seek a high quality childcare program. Parents want the best for their children. It is difficult to find a childcare program that meets the high standards that parents and children deserve. When a family is enrolled in a high quality program, it is important that the childcare provider share all aspects of his or her childcare program. Therefore, communication is necessary. The researcher developed a parent handbook to be used for family childcare programs. This handbook contains information that describes the program and highlights the aspects of the …

Successful Reading Comprehension Strategies For Beginner Readers, Elizabeth S. Gordon

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This research examines the different reading comprehension strategies that students can use in order to be successful at reading comprehension. The strategies discussed in this research project were chosen based on the research available and the success rates of the strategies. Numerous strategies will be introduced and examined in order to provide both teachers and parents with guidelines to follow when they teach students about reading comprehension. If reading for meaning is the goal for students and teachers, more emphasis should be placed on the teaching of successful reading comprehension strategies. The findings of this research culminate in a unit …

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Minimizing the impact of invasive alien species (IAS) on islands and elsewhere requires researchers to provide cogent information on the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of IAS to the public and policy makers. Unfortunately, this information has not been readily available owing to a paucity of scientific research and the failure of the scientific community to make their findings readily available to decision makers. This review explores the vulnerability of islands to biological invasion, reports on environmental and socioeconomic impacts of IAS on islands and provides guidance and information on technical resources that can help minimize the effects of IAS in …

Hell Hath No Fury Like An Investor Scorned: Retribution, Deterrence, Restoration, And The Criminalization Of Securities Fraud Under Rule 10b-5, Joan Macleod Heminway Jan 2007

Hell Hath No Fury Like An Investor Scorned: Retribution, Deterrence, Restoration, And The Criminalization Of Securities Fraud Under Rule 10b-5, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

This brief article focuses attention on the ineffectual nature of prosecutions of corporations and their insiders - generally, officers and directors - for securities fraud under Rule 10b-5. Specifically, the article begins by briefly summarizing the nature of enforcement actions and related penalties under Rule 10b-5. Next, the article argues that, as currently conceived and executed, criminal enforcement actions under Rule 10b-5 are ineffective as a means of achieving retribution, as deterrents of undesirable behavior, and as enforcement vehicles that vindicate the policies underlying Rule 10b-5. As a means of addressing these criticisms, the article suggests possible enhancements to Rule …

Frat Star, Nathan Andrew Holic Jan 2007

Frat Star, Nathan Andrew Holic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, a social novel in the tradition of Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities and Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, is all at once an attentive first-person study of a twenty-something man close to his cracking point in his first post-college job, a detailed expose of national fraternities, and the sweeping panoramic view of an entire generation of over-programmed college students searching for direction. Frat Star follows a fragile college graduate named Charles Washington, who takes a position as an "Educational Consultant" with a national fraternity in his first semester after graduation. For sixteen …

Gender (In)Visibility At Abu Ghraib, Marita Gronnvoll Jan 2007

Gender (In)Visibility At Abu Ghraib, Marita Gronnvoll

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This essay explores the gender discourse surrounding the women soldiers implicated in the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal, and the gender silence surrounding their male counterparts. The analysis suggests that the women soldiers in the abuse case, particularly Lynndie England, are held to gendered standards, while the male soldiers are discussed in terms that are nongendered. Further, analysis of the widely disseminated photographs suggests that where the Iraqi male prisoners are excessively gendered and homosexualized, the male soldiers have their presumed heterosexuality preserved. Examination of the Abu Ghraib case suggests implications for rhetorical scholars interested in gender, as well as larger …

Selective Cysteine Protease Inhibition Contributes To Blood-Feeding Success Of The Tick Ixodes Scapularis, Michalis Kotsyfakis, Shahid Karim, John F. Andersen, Thomas N. Mather, José M. C. Ribeiro Jan 2007

Selective Cysteine Protease Inhibition Contributes To Blood-Feeding Success Of The Tick Ixodes Scapularis, Michalis Kotsyfakis, Shahid Karim, John F. Andersen, Thomas N. Mather, José M. C. Ribeiro

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Ixodes scapularis is the main vector of Lyme disease in the eastern and central United States. Tick salivary secretion has been shown as important for both blood-meal completion and pathogen transmission. Here we report a duplication event of cystatin genes in its genome that results in a transcription-regulated boost of saliva inhibitory activity against a conserved and relatively limited number of vertebrate papain-like cysteine proteases during blood feeding. We further show that the polypeptide products of the two genes differ in their binding affinity for some enzyme targets, and they display different antigenicity. Moreover, our reverse genetic approach employing RNA …
