The "How" Of Enforcing The Fourteenth Amendment: How The Rehnquist Court's Treatment Of Implementation, Not Interpretation, Is The True Post-Boerne Failing, Rebecca L. Goldberg
ExpressO
This article argues that the severe limits the Rehnquist Court imposed on Congress’ power to enforce the Fourteenth Amendment did not stem primarily from the Court’s treatment of Congress’ interpretive powers in City of Boerne v. Flores, as most commentators have assumed, but rather from the Court’s treatment of Congress’ assessments regarding implementation in the cases that followed Boerne (Kimel, Garrett, Hibbs, and Lane). The article provides a new framework for assessing Congress’ power to pass a law under Section 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment – a framework that adheres, in the main, to the Court’s 14§5 doctrine in Boerne …

Effect Of Supplemental Fat From Dried Distillers Grains With Solubles Or Corn Oil On Cow Performance, Igf-1, Gh, And Nefa Concentrations, Abigail Bartosh, Cody Wright, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, George Perry
South Dakota Beef Report, 2007
Research has demonstrated that supplemental fat and(or) changes in growth hormone (GH) or insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations may affect reproductive performance in beef females. Dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) contain approximately 10% to 15% fat; however, minimal research to date has investigated DDGS specifically as a supplemental fat source. The objective of this experiment was to investigate whether supplemental fat from either DDGS or raw corn oil impacts cow growth performance and plasma GH, IGF-1, or non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Sixty open beef cows [body weight (BW) = 553.5 ± 38.7 kg; body condition score (BCS) = …

Beta Blocker Specificity: A Building Block Toward Personalized Medicine., Brent R Degeorge, Walter J Koch
Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Drugs known as beta blockers, which antagonize the beta-adrenergic receptor (beta-AR), are an important component of the treatment regimen for chronic heart failure (HF). However, a significant body of evidence indicates that genetic heterogeneity at the level of the beta(1)-AR may be a factor in explaining the variable responses of HF patients to beta blockade. In this issue of the JCI, Rochais et al. describe how a single amino acid change in beta(1)-AR alters its structural conformation and improves its functional response to carvedilol, a beta blocker currently used in the treatment of HF (see the related article beginning on …

Contamination Levels Of Selected Organochlorine And Organophosphate Pesticides In The Selangor River, Malaysia Between 2002 And 2003, Kok Hoong Leong, Benjamin L.L. Tan, Ali Mohd Mustafa
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In Malaysia, rivers are the main source of public water supplies. This study was conducted from 2002 to 2003 to determine the levels of selected organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides in the Selangor River in Malaysia. Surface water samples have been collected seasonally from nine sites along the river. A liquid-liquid extraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique was used to determine the trace levels of these pesticide residues. The organochlorine pesticides detected were lindane, heptachlor, endosulfan, dieldrin, endosulfan sulfate, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDE whereas for organophosphate pesticides, they were chlorpyrifos and diazinon. At the river upstream where a dam …

Premenopausal women are relatively protected against the development of coronary heart disease, when compared with age-matched men. This difference dissolves after menopause and is accepted to be hormonally mediated. Despite recent clinical controversies in the use of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women, there have been numerous in vitro and in vivo studies that demonstrate favorable effects of estrogen on the endothelium. The Bender laboratory has shown that 17β-estradiol (E2) rapidly induces nitric oxide (NO) release from human endothelial cells (EC) in vitro. This occurs through a c-Src/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase)/Akt pathway, in a rapid fashion in the absence of modulated …

Growth Factor Binding Molecules, Said Sebti, Andrew D. Hamilton
USF Patents
Growth factor binding molecules having a plurality of peptide loops attached to a non-peptide organic scaffold, preferably having pseudo-six amino acid peptide loops with four amino acid sidechains. The growth factor binding molecules specifically bind various growth factors and are suitable for treating a subject having tumors or restinosis. In one embodiment a platelet-derived growth factor binding molecule is disclosed that is used to inhibit tumor growth and angiogenesis in solid tumors.

The objective was to compare the relative response between rams and bulls in characteristics of LH, FSH and testosterone (T) secretion, during and after long-term treatment with GnRH analogs. Animals were treated with GnRH agonist, GnRH antagonist, or vehicle (Control) for 28 days. Serial blood samples were collected on day 21 of treatment, and at several intervals after treatment. Injections of natural sequence GnRH were used to evaluate the capacity of the pituitary to release gonadotropins during and after treatment. Treatment with GnRH agonist increased basal LH and T concentrations in both rams and bulls, with a greater relative increase …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) outbreak in the Northwestern United States ushered in an era that has dramatically changed the way beef processors in the United States convert live cattle into meat. Unprecedented cooperation among the beef processors and massive investment in research by the US government and the beef industry have resulted in an acceptable level of control of E. coli O157:H7 in ground beef. The evidence to support the progress in control of E. coli O157:H7 is the CDC data for reduction in human illness as well as the dramatic reduction in the number of …

Association Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Tir Polymorphisms With Human Infection, James L. Bono, James E. Keen, Michael L. Clawson, Lisa M. Durso, Michael P. Heaton, William W. Laegreid
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Background: Emerging molecular, animal model and epidemiologic evidence suggests that Shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (STEC O157) isolates vary in their capacity to cause human infection and disease. The translocated intimin receptor (tir) and intimin (eae) are virulence factors and bacterial receptor-ligand proteins responsible for tight STEC O157 adherence to intestinal epithelial cells. They represent logical genomic targets to investigate the role of sequence variation in STEC O157 pathogenesis and molecular epidemiology. The purposes of this study were (1) to identify tir and eae polymorphisms in diverse STEC O157 isolates derived from clinically ill humans and healthy cattle (the dominant zoonotic …
Identification Of Genes Encoding Acyl-Coa Reductases And Aldehyde Reductases In Mycobacterial Genome By Characterization Of The Reductases Expressed In E. Coli, Harminder Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been long known to produce wax esters. However, the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis have not been identified. Here we report the identification of Rv3391 and Rv1543 as genes that encode fatty acyl-CoA reductases and Rv1544 as one that encodes an aldehyde reductase. When expressed in E.coli, the products of Rv3391 and Rv1543 catalyzed reduction of fatty acyl-CoA to fatty alcohol with the corresponding aldehyde as an intermediate with an optimal pH of 7.0. Both enzymes showed a strong preference for NADPH over NADH as a reductant. Apparent Km for NADPH was 38 [micro]M for Rv3391 product …

A Member Of The Novel Fikk Family Of Plasmodium Falciparum Putative Protein Kinases Exhibits Diacylglycerol Kinase Activity And Is Exported To The Host Erythrocyte, David Floyd Curtis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plasmodium falciparum is one of four species known to cause malaria in humans and is the species that is associated with the most virulent form of the disease. Malaria causes nearly two million deaths each year, many of these occurring among children in under-developed countries of the world. One reason for this is the prevalence of drug resistant strains of malaria that mitigate the efficacy of existing drugs. Hence, the identification of a new generation of pharmacological agents for malaria is extremely urgent. The recent identification of a group of novel protein kinases within the Plasmodium falciparum genome has provided …
