110- Geophysical And Archaeological Survey Of Lake Bluff Park, St. Joseph, Michigan, Michael Nassaney, William Sauck

Reports of Investigations

Geophysical and archaeological surveys were conducted in a segment of Lake Bluff Park immediately west of Lake Boulevard in St. Joseph, Michigan during Fall 2005. The surveys were conducted because background research had indicated the potential for archaeological remains in the project area, particularly the construction of Fort Miami in the vicinity in 1679 and encounters with human burials along the bluff edge in the nineteenth century. The City of St. Joseph requested the survey to avoid disturbing potentially significant subsurface remains during excavations to replace utility lines beneath Lake Boulevard.

Sixteen geophysical blocks were surveyed, comprising approximately 35% of …

A Twelve-Square?, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

Happy enough to have found 10- and 11-squares, I then heard with a sense of foreboding that Ross Eckler was retiring as editor. With more time at his disposal, perhaps he would pre-empt my discovery of the twelve square, an object which I can scarcely believe is possible (It requires about four million 12-letter words). I fear to lose my reputation as the guru of large squares.

Urban Physiology: City Ants Possess High Heat Tolerance, Michael W. Sears, Michael J. Angilletta, Robbie S. Wilson, Amanda C. Niehaus, Pedro L. Ribeiro, Carlos A. Navas

Urbanization has caused regional increases in temperature that exceed those measured on a global scale, leading to urban heat islands as much as 12°C hotter than their surroundings. Optimality models predict ectotherms in urban areas should tolerate heat better and cold worse than ectotherms in rural areas. We tested these predications by measuring heat and cold tolerances of leaf-cutter ants from South America’s largest city (São Paulo, Brazil). Specifically, we compared thermal tolerances of ants from inside and outside of the city. Knock-down resistance and chill-coma recovery were used as indicators of heat and cold tolerances, respectively. Ants from within …

Continuous Newton's Method refers to a certain dynamical system whose associated flow generically tends to the roots of a given polynomial. An Euler approximation of this system, with step size h=1, yields the discrete Newton's method algorithm for finding roots. In this note we contrast Euler approximations with several different approximations of the continuous ODE system and, using computer experiments, consider their impact on the associated fractal basin boundaries of the roots

Caveat Emptor: How Cafta Imperils State Recycled Paper Procurement Preferences, Ben Stafford

Washington Law Review

The federal government's use of its control over foreign commerce increasingly conflicts with powers reserved to the states. Article 9 of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) establishes requirements by which government agencies must abide in procuring goods and services. Specifically, CAFTA Article 9 establishes that procuring entities must afford "national treatment" to goods imported from other CAFTA nations by treating such foreign goods at least as favorably as similar domestic goods. The federal government reached an agreement wherein a number of states became bound by these rules, including fourteen states with state statutes related to governmental procurement preferences …

Novel Pathway For Induction Of Latent Virus From Resting Cd4+ T Cells In The Simian Immunodeficiency Virus/Macaque Model Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Latency, Anding Shen, Hung Chih Yang, Yan Zhou, Amanda J. Chase Feb 2007

Novel Pathway For Induction Of Latent Virus From Resting Cd4+ T Cells In The Simian Immunodeficiency Virus/Macaque Model Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Latency, Anding Shen, Hung Chih Yang, Yan Zhou, Amanda J. Chase

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Although combination therapy allows the suppression of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) viremia to undetectable levels, eradication has not been achieved because the virus persists in cellular reservoirs, particularly the latent reservoir in resting CD4+ T lymphocytes. We previously established a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)/macaque model to study latency. We describe here a novel mechanism for the induction of SIV from latently infected resting CD4+ T cells. Several human cell lines including CEMx174 and Epstein-Barr virus-transformed human B-lymphoblastoid cell lines mediated contact-dependent activation of resting macaque T cells and induction of latent SIV. Antibody-blocking assays showed that interactions between …

Cognitive And Affective Aspects Of Thigmotaxis Strategy In Humans, Janos Kallai, Tamas Makany, Arpad Csatho, Kazmer Karadi, David Horvath, Beatrix Kovacs-Labadi, Robert Jarai, Lynn Nadel, Jake W. Jacobs

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The present article describes the cognitive and emotional aspects of human thiginotaxis (a wall-following spatial strategy) during exploration of virtual and physical spaces. The authors assessed 106 participants with spatial and nonspatial performance-based learning-memory tasks and with fear and anxiety questionnaires. The results demonstrate that thiginotaxis plays a distinct role at different phases of spatial learning. The 1st phase shows a positive correlation between thigmotaxis and general phobic avoidance, whereas there is no association between thigmotaxis and general phobic avoidance during later phases of learning. Furthermore, participants who underperformed in working memory tests and in a spatial construction task exhibited …

Conflict Between Translation Initiation And Elongation In Vertebrate Mitochondrial Genomes, Xuhua Xia, Huang Huang, Malisa Carullo, Esther Betran, Estuko N. Moriyama

Papers in Genetics

The strand-biased mutation spectrum in vertebrate mitochondrial genomes results in an AC-rich L-strand and a GT-rich H-strand. Because the L-strand is the sense strand of 12 protein-coding genes out of the 13, the third codon position is overall strongly AC-biased. The wobble site of the anticodon of the 22 mitochondrial tRNAs is either U or G to pair with the most abundant synonymous codon, with only one exception. The wobble site of Met-tRNA is C instead of U, forming the Watson- Crick match with AUG instead of AUA, the latter being much more frequent than the former. This has been …
