Zelotti's Epic Frescoes At Cataio: The Obizzi Saga, Irma Jaffe Feb 2007

Zelotti's Epic Frescoes At Cataio: The Obizzi Saga, Irma Jaffe

Art & Visual Culture

A prominent writer, a master painter, and a treasure of art that for centuries had been largely neglected are brought brilliantly to life in this first important study of one of the great legacies of Renaissance art. The immense castle at Cataio, about thirty-five miles from Venice, was built between 1570 and 1573. An extraordinary series of frescoes, painted in 1573, covers the walls of six of its palatial halls. Programmed by Giuseppe Betussi, the forty frescoes depict momentous events in the history of the Obizzi family from 1004 to 1422. Executed by Giambattista Zelotti and assistants, the frescoes, plus …

Regressive Evolution In The Mexican Cave Tetra, Astyanax Mexicanus, Meredith E. Protas, Melissa Conrad, Joshua B. Gross, Clifford Tabin, Richard Borowsky Feb 2007

Regressive Evolution In The Mexican Cave Tetra, Astyanax Mexicanus, Meredith E. Protas, Melissa Conrad, Joshua B. Gross, Clifford Tabin, Richard Borowsky

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Cave adapted animals generally have reduced pigmentation and eyes, but the evolutionary forces driving the reductions are unknown; Darwin famously questioned the role of natural selection in eye loss in cave fishes; “As it is difficult to imagine that eyes, although useless, could be in any way injurious to animals living in darkness, I attribute their loss wholly to disuse” [1]. We studied the genetic basis of this phenomenon in the Mexican cave tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, by mapping the quantitative trait loci (QTL) determining differences in eye/lens sizes and melanophore number between cave and surface fish. In addition, we mapped …

Hybrid Recursive Particle Swarm Optimization Learning Algorithm In The Design Of Radial Basis Function Networks, Ching-Yi Chen, Hsuan-Ming Feng, Fun Ye Feb 2007

Hybrid Recursive Particle Swarm Optimization Learning Algorithm In The Design Of Radial Basis Function Networks, Ching-Yi Chen, Hsuan-Ming Feng, Fun Ye

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, an innovative hybrid recursive particle swarm optimization (HRPSO) learning algorithm with normalized fuzzy cmean (NFCM) clustering, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and recursive least-squares (RLS) is proposed to generate radial basis function networks (RBFNs) modeling system with small numbers of descriptive radial basis functions (RBFs) for fast approximating two complex and nonlinear functions. Simulation results demonstrate that the generated NFCM-based learning schemes approach the desired modeling systems within the smaller population sizes.

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On The Diversity Of Soil-Dwelling Arthropods In The University Of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Tampa, Florida, Celina Bellanceau Feb 2007

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On The Diversity Of Soil-Dwelling Arthropods In The University Of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Tampa, Florida, Celina Bellanceau

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Leaf litter samples were used to study arthropod diversity in the University of South Florida Ecological Research Area. Arthropods were collected from different plots of different prescribed burn frequencies (1year, 2 year, 5 year, 7 year and no burn frequencies). Differential responses of arthropods to burn frequency were studied. It was expected that burn frequency would affect arthropod richness and diversity and that the pattern of diversity and richness would follow the Intermediated Disturbance Hypothesis. It was also expected that richness and diversity would be correlated with the amount of leaf litter present. Preliminary results suggest that there are short-term …

School Naming Rights And The First Amendment's Perfect Storm, Joseph Blocher Feb 2007

School Naming Rights And The First Amendment's Perfect Storm, Joseph Blocher

ExpressO

This Article uses public school naming rights as a lens through which to examine the conflicts between the tempestuous First Amendment categories of government speech, commercial speech, and forum analysis. Courts and scholars have noted the internal conflicts within these three categories, but have not yet explored the conflicts between them. As the growth of school naming rights shows, government sponsorship arrangements collapse the artificial divisions between the categories and demand a better understanding of their interactions. This Article represents a first attempt to bring coherence to these poorly defined and increasingly important areas of First Amendment law.
