Effect Of Farnesol On A Mouse Model Of Systemic Candidiasis, Determined By Use Of A Dpp3 Knockout Mutant Of Candida Albicans, Dhammika H.M.L.P. Navarathna, Jacob M. Hornby, Navasona Krishnan, Anne M. Parkhurst, Gerald E. Duhamel, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

This work extends our previous observation that the fungus Candida albicans secretes micromolar levels of farnesol and that accumulation of farnesol in vitro prevents the yeast-to-mycelium conversion in a quorumsensing manner. What does farnesol do in vivo? The purpose of this study was to determine the role of farnesol during infection with a well-established mouse model of systemic candidiasis with C. albicans A72 administered by tail vein injection. This question was addressed by altering both endogenous and exogenous farnesol. For endogenous farnesol, we created a knockout mutation in DPP3, the gene encoding a phosphatase which converts farnesyl pyrophosphate to farnesol. …

Displacing Dissent: The Role Of Place In First Amendment Jurisprudence, Thomas P. Crocker Apr 2007

Displacing Dissent: The Role Of Place In First Amendment Jurisprudence, Thomas P. Crocker

Faculty Publications

From the perspective of free speech theory, both of the central First Amendment values - human autonomy and deliberative democracy - require robust protection for the places and spaces in which speech and public discourse occur. This Article argues that current Supreme Court doctrine does not effectively protect speech from content neutral regulation of place. The problem is that remaining neutral is consistent with policies that would dislocate the very place for the "marketplace of ideas." Moreover, free speech theory focused on autonomy and deliberative democracy has not adequately addressed the role that place plays in furthering these values. Speech …

Federal Malpractice In Indian Country And The "Law Of The Place": A Re-Examination Of Williams V. United States Under Existing Law Of The Eastern Band Of Cherokee Indians, J. Matthew Martin Apr 2007

Federal Malpractice In Indian Country And The "Law Of The Place": A Re-Examination Of Williams V. United States Under Existing Law Of The Eastern Band Of Cherokee Indians, J. Matthew Martin

Campbell Law Review

This paper analyzes the law applicable in malpractice cases occurring within Indian Country and brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act, applying the "Law of the Place." In particular, this paper argues that the law of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, including the customs and traditions of the Tribe, should have been applied by the Federal Courts in lieu of the law of North Carolina in Williams v. United States. The paper concludes by suggesting that a complete "laboratory" of Federalism should include the application of the laws of the respective Tribes where Federal medical negligence occurs.

The Effects On Outcomes Of Financing Undergraduate Thesis Research At Butler University, Anne Wilson, Robert Holm Apr 2007

The Effects On Outcomes Of Financing Undergraduate Thesis Research At Butler University, Anne Wilson, Robert Holm

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Financial support of undergraduate thesis work is assumed, both by the administrators who provide it and the faculty members who oversee it, to provide an incentive for undergraduates to complete their theses. At Butler University two different academic units supervise this process: the Honors Program for thesis oversight and the Butler Institute for Research and Scholarship for funding oversight. We have seen that the effect of financial support for undergraduate thesis work can become obscured when two separate programs are involved in the process. Thesis support at our University was examined by and from the perspective of both programs over …

The Regenstrief Center For Healthcare Engineering: Designing, Implementing, And Sustaining Interdisciplinary Solutions To Transform Healthcare Delivery Systems, Steven M. Witz

RCHE Reports

Abstract: With start-up funding provided by the Regenstrief Foundation,Purdue University has created the Regenstrief Center for HealthcareEngineering (RCHE) to design, implement, and sustain interdisciplinarysolutions to improve the safety, quality, efficiency and accessibility ofhealthcare delivery systems. RCHE’s primary goal is to bring a systems- analysis approach to improving the processes of healthcare delivery, not toprovide tools or techniques for medical research, diagnosis, or treatment. Thisarticle will describe RCHE’s business model; that is, how RCHE ‘engineers’ interdisciplinary solutions, using the multiple perspectives of healthcare andmultiple project time scales to organise and leverage healthcare deliverytransformation. We then illustrate the model through the description …

Review Of Deep Time And The Texas High Plains: History And Geology By Paul H. Carlson, J. Brett Cruse

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This brief book is a history of the Lubbock Lake Landmark site, a nationally recognized archeological site located on the Texas southern High Plains on the north side of the city of Lubbock. The location has been the subject of intense investigations by archaeologists since 1939. Paul H. Carlson, a noted author and professor of history at Texas Tech University, states that his purpose was to go back through what John McPhee called "deep time" to show how the Lubbock Lake location was formed and was used by humans through time. He accomplishes this in five chapters.

Fibrocystin/Polyductin, Found In The Same Protein Complex With Polycystin-2, Regulates Calcium Responses In Kidney Epithelia, Shizuan Wang, Jingjing Zhang, Surya M. Nauli, Xiaogang Li, Patrick G. Starremans, Ying Luo, Kristina A. Roberts, Jing Zhou

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Recent evidence suggests that fibrocystin/polyductin (FPC), polycystin-1 (PC1), and polycystin-2 (PC2) are all localized at the plasma membrane and the primary cilium, where PC1 and PC2 contribute to fluid How sensation and may function in the same mechanotransduction pathways. To further define the exact subcellular localization of FPC, the protein product encoded by the PKHD1 gene responsible for autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in humans, and whether FPC has direct and/or indirect cross talk with PC2, which, in turn, is pivotal for the pathogenesis of autosomal dominant PKD, we performed double immunostaining and coimmunoprecipitation as well as a microfluorimetry …

Airline Quality Rating 2007, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley Apr 2007

Airline Quality Rating 2007, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley

Airline Quality Rating Report

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2007, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for calendar year 2006. AQR scores for 2006 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2007 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic scheduled-service passenger revenue during 2006. Using the Airline Quality Rating …

Gender Differences In Auditory Perception Of Pure Tone Frequencies And Speech Intelligibility Via Bone Conduction Transducers, Meghan Leigh Hodges Apr 2007

Gender Differences In Auditory Perception Of Pure Tone Frequencies And Speech Intelligibility Via Bone Conduction Transducers, Meghan Leigh Hodges

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Two experiments were conducted to see if gender differences exist in bone conduction hearing processes. The first experiment was a pure tone study where hearing thresholds for six pure tone frequencies and four bone conduction skull locations were measured in 15 male and 15 female participants to determine if gender differences exist in auditory signal detection. As frequency of the pure tone signal increased the difference between genders’ hearing thresholds and mean ranks of threshold overall; however, when Kruskal-Wallis statistical tests were performed, significant differences between genders for bone conduction were only found for the mastoid location at 6000-Hz and …

On New Characters Of The Eggs Of Embioptera With The Description Of A New Species Of Saussurembia (Anisembiidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Claudia Szumik, Chanel Mccreedy

Biology

Nine egg characters for eleven species of Embioptera are described for the first time. Egg variability indicates its potential use in taxonomy. Here, we analyse the correlation of this variability with the ordinal classification. In addition, a new species of Saussurembia (Anisembiidae) from Trinidad is described, including classical traits in the systematics of Embioptera (adult male and female), as well as general features of the egg and maternal behaviour.

A Review Of Successful Urban Coyote Management Programs Implemented To Prevent Or Reduce Attacks On Humans And Pets In Southern California, Rex O. Baker

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Since the fatal coyote (Canis latrans) attack on a 3-year-old girl in Glendale, California in 1981, government agencies have emphasized developing coyote management programs to increase public safety. This presentation will focus on the success of numerous programs including: small neighborhoods, industrial sites, parks, large city and county-wide projects. Local environmental conditions attracting coyotes, specific problems caused by the coyotes, public reaction, and the role of public relations including public education emphasizing environmental management, will be discussed. Coyote population monitoring regarding behavior patterns, aversive conditioning, and coyote population reduction methods will be reviewed. Trapping remains the most effective …

Urban Coyotes: Some Summary Thoughts, Jeffrey S. Green

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services program provides services on request to help alleviate damage by wildlife to agriculture, natural resources and human health and safety. Such services may also involve dealing with coyotes (Canis latrans) in urban settings. Resolving problems with urban coyotes requires a mix of suitable methods but perhaps more importantly, an understanding of complex social and cultural issues surrounding people and wildlife.

The Current Regulatory Environment Of Urban Coyote Control - A Private Wco Perspective, Claude Oleyar Apr 2007

The Current Regulatory Environment Of Urban Coyote Control - A Private Wco Perspective, Claude Oleyar

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Social, political, and legal considerations have contributed to an unfavorable regulatory environment for lethal control of urban coyotes (Canis latrans). I analyze and break adown that environment from a Wildlife Control Operator (WCO) perspective. Currently 3 significant factors frame the issue but a 4th could be emerging. First, our hands are tied: I use the situation in Colorado to illustrate the point. Compounding factors include the need for a paradigm shift in how rules are derived, the lag-time factor in agency response to issues, and the tendency toward bureaucracy/over-regulation. Second, human dimensions rule: I critique the downside of …

A Broad Perspective On Current And Future Research On Urban Coyotes, John A. Shivik, Kathleen A. Fagerstone Apr 2007

A Broad Perspective On Current And Future Research On Urban Coyotes, John A. Shivik, Kathleen A. Fagerstone

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

A change in wildlife management appears to be occurring. Previous efforts needed to be focused on producing more game species or endangered animals; now, however, tools and training must resolve issues of overabundance and conflict with predators, especially species such as coyotes (Canis latrans) in urban areas. Urban conflicts with coyotes may be growing because of urban development of land and human intrusion, but alteration of habitats that attract coyotes is also a likely factor. Research that will describe basic coyote biology in urban areas will be needed, but managers will also need applied research and development of …

Code-Level Modeling Of The Hodgkin -Huxley Neuron Model Using An Open Source Version Of Spice, Anthony Stuart Carver Apr 2007

Code-Level Modeling Of The Hodgkin -Huxley Neuron Model Using An Open Source Version Of Spice, Anthony Stuart Carver

Doctoral Dissertations

There have been numerous studies presented in the literature demonstrating proof of principle neural-electronic circuitry. Some of these studies involve simulations of neural detection using synthetic electronic circuitry, while others involve simulations of neural excitation using external electronics. A common feature of these studies is the simplicity of the overall circuit topology. Some of these studies implement the circuit equations in conventional numerical ordinary differential equation solvers. This process involves the algebraic manipulation of the circuit equations which is a tedious process for all but the simplest circuit topologies. As the overall complexity of the network topology increases, the numerical …

Sound Localization Accuracy In The Blind Population, Mary Arrington Deloach Apr 2007

Sound Localization Accuracy In The Blind Population, Mary Arrington Deloach

Doctoral Dissertations

The ability to accurately locate a sound source is crucial in the blind population to orient and mobilize independently in the environment. Sound localization is accomplished by the detection of binaural differences in intensity and time of incoming sound waves along with phase differences and spectral cues. It is dependent on auditory sensitivity and processing. However, localization ability can not be predicted from the audiogram or an auditory processing evaluation.

Auditory information is not received only from objects making sound, but also from objects reflecting sound. Auditory information used in this manner is called echolocation. Echolocation significantly enhances localization in …
