E.M. Forster's Lecture "Kipling's Poems": Negotiating The Modernist Shift From "The Authoritarian Stock-In Trade" To An Aristocratic Democracy, Michael Lackey
English Publications
In 1909, Forster delivered a scathing lecture about Rudyard Kipling, which outlines the political dangers implicit in Kipling's aesthetic. This introduction to the lecture briefly examines Forster's critique of Kipling's politics and aesthetic found in both the lecture and subsequent reviews of Kipling's work. Central to Forster's critique is his conviction that contemporary culture is and should be moving from authoritarian to democratic political systems. While Forster acknowledges Kipling's power and skill as a writer, he suggests that Kipling's aesthetic genius belongs to an earlier stage in the world's development, when authoritarian political models dominated. Within Forster's aristocratic democracy, Kipling's …

Flarr Pages #57: Culture In The Stars: Signs Of The Zodiac In Language Courses, Richard Stanley
FLARR Pages
Most students know their astrological sign, but few realize that the signs of the zodiac have very deep roots in ancient Mediterranean/Middle Eastern culture. Since foreign language courses include units on the calendar and time, information about the zodiac can enrich in-class discussions of these topics with interesting cultural, linguistic, and scientific material. The examples included here can be adapted by using specific words in the target language. An added advantage is that students learn not only signs but some animal names as well.
Saving The Planet With Higher Yields From 21st Century Farms, Dennis T. Avery
Saving The Planet With Higher Yields From 21st Century Farms, Dennis T. Avery
Center for Applied Economics
I come today with a heartfelt plea from the world’s farmers to its environmentalists: “Please understand that high yield farming is mankind’s greatest humanitarian achievement while also its greatest environmental triumph.”
High-yield farming is the major factor in lowering both human death rates and human population growth rates — while minimizing the land required to feed each person. Because of this, we fully agree that humanity now has the capability of, and thus the responsibility for, saving the wildlife still on this planet. With population growth continuing — though at a declining rate — and the rapid spread of global …

Classroom Websites, Angela A. Zimmerer
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The purpose of this research project was to provide teachers with a fast and efficient method of developing a classroom website. In addition, the author strove to convince teachers that their initial time commitment would result in a product that would enhance both communication and student learning. In the Review of Literature, research is presented about classroom websites, the effects of the integration of technology, and the digital divide. The project, A Teacher’s Handbook for Developing a Classroom Website, provides step by step instructions, illustrations, and numerous ideas for authentic integration of technology. Peer assessment as well as informal feedback …

"Recently released figures showing crude oil imports soaring by nearly 40% in the first five months of the year as China needs more oil to fuel its explosive economic growth..." says one article from the BBC. According to the internationally renowned news agency "...stockpile coal has plunged to lowest levels in 20 years...” China is not alone in its battle with depleting natural resources. The entire international community has placed alternative energy research as a primary objective. Though the economic powerhouse has enjoyed an over 9% GDP growth rate for a better part of the last decade, environmental experts wonder …

Performing Tourism In Venice: Local Residents In Focus, Bernadette Quinn
Performing Tourism In Venice: Local Residents In Focus, Bernadette Quinn
Articles
In contrast to the growing literature on tourist mobility as a performed art, relatively little attention has been paid to resident mobility in tourism places. This paper examines how residents encounter tourists using the concept of tourism as a performance. Drawing on the case of the historic city-center of Venice in northeastern Italy, it explores the spatialities produced through the embodied practices of local mobilities. The paper finds that their movements demonstrated a marked degree of agency. It concludes by arguing that the concept of tourism as performance affords useful insights into how local residents are proactively and intricately involved …

Acquisition Licenses In Tennessee: An Annotated Model Tennessee Acquisition License Agreement, Joan Macleod Heminway
Scholarly Works
The coauthors have constructed a model license agreement for use in connection with acquisitions, annotated with footnotes on substantive law and legal drafting issues. This model is intended to serve as a research piece, teaching tool, and practitioner resource. This agreement is part of a series of acquisition agreements and related ancillary contracts and instruments published by Transactions: Tennessee Journal of Business Law beginning in 2003.

Missionary Schools And The Enlightenment Of The Alaskan Natives: A Theological And Sociological Survey Of Russian Orthodox And Protestant Missionary Efforts Among The Nations Of The Aleutian Islands And Southeastern Alaska, Erik C. Young
Seminary Masters Theses
The goal of this research thesis is to explore the activities of the Protestant and Russian Orthodox missions to Alaska and the ways in which they engaged the Native American peoples. It examines the geographic, religious, sociaL and economic distinctives of the respective missionary ideologies. Although the Orthodox and Protestant missions labored at different time periods and under different conditions, their work overlapped and their efforts were informed by the anthropological and theological traditions from which they derived. As a vehicle for equitable comparison, this thesis briefly unpacks the lives of the Presbyterian minister Edward Marsden, a Tsirnshian Indian educated …

An Assembly Language I.D.E. To Engage Students Of All Levels: Tutorial Presentation, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar
An Assembly Language I.D.E. To Engage Students Of All Levels: Tutorial Presentation, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
MIPS assembly language is widely taught in computer organization and related courses due to its elegant design and ease of learning. In this workshop, participants will explore varied uses of the MARS integrated development environment (IDE) and simulator for MIPS assembly language programming. Basic exploration is guided by a set of MIPS programming exercises to illustrate MARS use and its extensive and intuitive interactive debugging capabilities. The next level of exploration will introduce MARS "tools", applications that can interact with executing MIPS programs by observing the simulated MIPS memory and registers. Exercises will demonstrate how currently-available MARS tools can be …
A Quandary In Law? A (Qualified) Catholic Denial, Patrick Mckinley Brennan
A Quandary In Law? A (Qualified) Catholic Denial, Patrick Mckinley Brennan
Working Paper Series
A contribution to the second law review symposium dedicated to Steven Smith’s Law’s Quandary (Harvard 2004), this paper asks whether the “quandary” in which Smith finds modern law and jurisprudence is not, at least in part, the consequence of misunderstanding the classical natural law jurisprudence. The paper advances an interpretation of natural law according to which the natural law is the human person’s “participation” in the eternal law itself, with literally cosmic consequences for how we understand the ends and measures of human lawmaking. Mounting an argument against Justice Scalia’s thesis that “God applies the natural law,” the paper goes …
