Deploying A Secure Windows Operating System And Applications., Russell Slater Miles 1982- May 2007

Deploying A Secure Windows Operating System And Applications., Russell Slater Miles 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many businesses have poor IT infrastructure and are in need of a major overhaul. University of Louisville Properties (ULP), in particular, needed the ability to share files between staff, backup data, secure data, and eliminate viruses and malware. Along those lines, ULP was looking for a secure, stable, reliable, and most importantly, a costeffective Microsoft solution to their IT woes. For consistency and reliability, a Symantec Ghost image was created of such a system. This system was created using Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office 2003, Symantec Client Security, and Microsoft Sysprep. The image was deployed to all ULP computers, creating …

Investigation Of Head And Neck Injury Risk Associated With Short-Distance Falls In 12 Month Old Children., Angela J. Knight May 2007

Investigation Of Head And Neck Injury Risk Associated With Short-Distance Falls In 12 Month Old Children., Angela J. Knight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the risk of severe head and neck injury in short distance falls for a 12-month-old child. A series of free falls and falls from standing were experimentally simulated using an instrumented anthropomorphic test device (ATD) representing a 12-month-old child. Three different falls heights, five different impact surfaces, and two levels of joint stiffness were tested to determine their effect on injury risk. Linear head accelerations were measured and angular head accelerations were calculated using the base of the neck as the pivot point. Head Injury Criteria (HIC) values and impact durations were …

Dry Bean Intake Of Women Ages 19-45, Julie Eihusen, Julie A. Albrecht May 2007

Dry Bean Intake Of Women Ages 19-45, Julie Eihusen, Julie A. Albrecht

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Dry beans are considered an excellent source of folate. A mail-out survey was conducted to measure the dry bean intake of women between the ages of 19 and 45 years and to estimate the amount of folate from beans in the diet. One hundred and seventy-six women reported on the frequency with which they consume foods made with dry beans and the types of dry beans they have previously consumed. The average number of servings of food made with beans per month was 18.5, and the most commonly eaten food made with dry beans was refried beans, averaging 2 times …

Communication And Leadership: Faculty Perceptions Of The Department Chair, Kathleen Czech Edd May 2007

Communication And Leadership: Faculty Perceptions Of The Department Chair, Kathleen Czech Edd

Dissertations

With department chairs providing a critical link between faculty and administration, their leadership impacts universities on a broad level. However, chairs often report dissatisfaction with the position and experience rapid turnover. In an effort to help understand the role that communication plays in effective leadership for department chairs, this study provides an empirical test of Gibb's theory of defensive vs. supportive communication. As such, this project investigated the communication and leadership behaviors of university department chairs as evaluated by their faculty members. Specifically, 202 randomly selected faculty members from colleges and universities affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges, Washington, …

Effects Of Tricalcium Phosphate Coated Titanium On Adjacent Early Bone Formation, Bristol Williams May 2007

Effects Of Tricalcium Phosphate Coated Titanium On Adjacent Early Bone Formation, Bristol Williams

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Dental implants are the gold standard of restorative dentistry today. Implants have been used for several years in Orthopedics. Dental implants are an important treatment option for several patients today. When a patient is fully or partially dentate, they are given the opportunity to restore their dentition in ways similar to their natural oral cavity. The past literature states that titanium is one of the first metals used in implant placement. There have been many improvements made on this material. Most modifications have been used in order to promote more bone growth around these implants. Several different coating materials have …

Silver Doped Hydroxyapatite Coating On Titanium Surfaces And Its Effect On Early Bone Response And Osseointegration, Nicole Besu May 2007

Silver Doped Hydroxyapatite Coating On Titanium Surfaces And Its Effect On Early Bone Response And Osseointegration, Nicole Besu

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The clinical success of dental implants is determined mostly by surface properties of implants and interactions with surrounding tissues. Furthermore, clinical success of dental implants is directed by implant surfaces and bone cell responses that promote osseointegration and long-term stability. Hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated Titanium (Ti) implants have been widely used due to its effect on bone response. However, microbial infection is common. One material known to have anti-microbial properties is silver (Ag). However, the effects Ag has on osteoblastic activity as well as decrease bacterial load has yet to be determined.

In this study, the effect of Ag-doped HA coatings on …

Discrimination And Outrage: The Migration From Civil Rights To Tort Law, Martha Chamallas May 2007

Discrimination And Outrage: The Migration From Civil Rights To Tort Law, Martha Chamallas

William & Mary Law Review

It is not always appreciated that proven discrimination on the basis of race or sex may not amount to a tort and that even persistent racial or sexual harassment may not be enough to qualify for tort recovery. This Article explores the question of whether discriminatory and harassing conduct in the workplace is or should be considered outrageous conduct, actionable under the tort of intentional infliction of emotional distress. In recent years, courts have taken radically different approaches to the issue, from holding that such claims are preempted to treating the infliction tort as a reinforcement of civil rights principles. …

Modified Art Curriculum For Deaf Students With Secondary Disabilities, Laural Hartman May 2007

Modified Art Curriculum For Deaf Students With Secondary Disabilities, Laural Hartman

Theses

This capstone_masters_project focuses on creating a modified art curriculum for deaf students with secondary disabilities. From personal experiences, there are art curriculums designed for special education students in general and art curriculums for deaf students, but there is no art curriculum for deaf students with disabilities. Since deaf students with disabilities at residential schools already face a limitation by not being able to hear, they shouldn't face more limitations due to another disability. This paper will present what researchers have said about teaching art to both special education students and deaf students. This paper will also include how deaf and …

High Energy Radiation Activates Nuclear Factor- Kapppa B In Mice, Georgette Kendrea Rolle

Theses (Pre-2016)

Astronauts aboard the space station are subject to the hazardous effects of ionizing radiation and microgravity. They receive an average of 80mSv radiation for a sixmonth stay in the space, which is more than 30 times as much as the average human on Earth receives. Exposure to ionizing radiation causes i􁪽creased ionization in the cells and tissues which severely affects the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and bone marrow. Chronic irradiation causes cancer, birth anomalies, erythema, and dysfunctions to almost all organs of the body depending on the total dose and site of irradiation. Ionizing radiation, through signs of inflammation, …

Safety Impacts Of Increasing Lengths Of Left -Turn Lanes, Mehdi Azimi May 2007

Safety Impacts Of Increasing Lengths Of Left -Turn Lanes, Mehdi Azimi

Theses (Pre-2016)

Left-tum lanes can improve safety and operation of intersections by providing space for deceleration and storage of vehicles waiting to make a left tum. The length of the lane is critical in the design of left-tum lanes. Insufficient length may result in lefttum lane overflow which will seriously impact the safety of the intersection. Therefore it is important to design left-tum lanes with adequate length. The objective of this research is to determine the safety impact of increasing storage lengths of left-tum lanes in intersections. Inadequate length of a left-tum lane results in overflow problem and increases rear-end accident risk …

Killing Roger Coleman: Habeas, Finality, And The Innocence Gap, Todd E. Pettys May 2007

Killing Roger Coleman: Habeas, Finality, And The Innocence Gap, Todd E. Pettys

William & Mary Law Review

For the past fifteen years, the execution of Roger Coleman has served as perhaps the most infamous illustration of the U.S. Supreme Court's determination to help the states achieve finality in their criminal cases. Convicted of rape and murder in 1982, Coleman steadfastly maintained his innocence and drew many supporters to his cause. In its 1991 ruling in Coleman v. Thompson, however, the Court refused to consider the constitutional claims raised in Coleman's habeas petition. The Court ruled that Coleman had forfeited his right to seek habeas relief when, in prior state proceedings, his attorneys mistakenly filed their notice of …

The Voice Of Dioneo: Women In Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, Caitlin E. Williams May 2007

The Voice Of Dioneo: Women In Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, Caitlin E. Williams

Honors Scholar Theses

Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, a famous piece of Italian literature written during the early Renaissance period, has created much debate among critics about its ambiguous position as a feminist, or anti-feminist piece of literature. This study seeks to explore this popular debate by examining Dioneo, one of the ten narrators Boccaccio creates for this collection. Dioneo is commonly referred to as the main voice of Boccaccio, or as the leader of the narrators. His character provides some of the most feminine stories within the Decameron as well as the most mysogynistic tale. Dioneo acts as a transgressor throughout the piece …

Hemingway: A Study In Gender And Sexuality, Kemen Zabala May 2007

Hemingway: A Study In Gender And Sexuality, Kemen Zabala

Honors Scholar Theses

"Hemingway: A Study in Gender and Sexuality" explores a subject that few scholars have studied: how traditional, male-female gender binaries and traditional notions of sexuality affect Hemingway's characters. Hemingway, known as "Papa" for his "machismo” writings, has his characters struggle with societal traditional views on gender binaries and sexualities. An analysis of six of his works published during his life and posthumously led to the conclusion that, although Hemingway never finds the language to articulate that traditional views on gender binaries and heteronormative sexuality actually hinder societal progress, he places his characters in situations in which they have to transgress …

The Rise Of Controversial Content In Film, Ashley Haygood May 2007

The Rise Of Controversial Content In Film, Ashley Haygood

Masters Theses

This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry.

Soil Microbial Community Response To Hexavalent Chromium In Planted And Unplanted Soil, Ioannis Ipsilantis, Mark S. Coyne

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Theories suggest that rapid microbial growth rates lead to quicker development of metal resistance. We tested these theories by adding hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] to soil, sowing Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), and comparing rhizosphere and bulk soil microbial community responses. Four weeks after the initial Cr(VI) application we measured Cr concentration, microbial biomass by fumigation extraction and soil extract ATP, tolerance to Cr and growth rates with tritiated thymidine incorporation, and performed community substrate use analysis with BIOLOG GN plates. Exchangeable Cr(VI) levels were very low, and therefore we assumed the Cr(VI) impact was transient. Microbial biomass was reduced …

Military Sex Scandals From Tailhook To The Present: The Cure Can Be Worse Than The Disease, Kingsley R. Browne

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy

On Friday and Saturday of the convention, "hospitality suites" hosted by various flight squadrons were the scene of what can accurately be described as debauchery.6 The activities included performances by female strippers, sexual interaction with these strippers,7 drinking "belly/navel shots,"8 which entails men drinking alcohol out of women's navels, "butt biting"9 and leg shaving,10 which are what they sound like, and "ball walking," which consisted of fully clothed male officers walking around with their genitals exposed.11 The activities spread into the third-floor hall linking the suites. A "gauntlet" (or "gantlet")-a double line of male aviators, one on each side of …

Identification And Control Of Pest Slugs And Snails For Broadacre Crops In Western Australia, Svetlana Micic, Ken Henry, Paul Horne May 2007

Identification And Control Of Pest Slugs And Snails For Broadacre Crops In Western Australia, Svetlana Micic, Ken Henry, Paul Horne

Bulletins 4000 -

The numbers of slugs and snails have increased in broadacre cropping in Western Australia with the use of minimum tillage and stubble-retention practices. The organic content of paddocks increases under such systems, providing an increased food source especially to young slugs and snails. Soil moisture content is greater over summer leading to higher survival levels of slugs and snails.

Slug and snail pests in Australia have come from other countries, mainly the Mediterranean region. They damage plant seeds (mainly legumes), recently germinated seeds, seedlings and leaves and can be a contaminant of grain at harvest.

Trihalomethane Formation Potential In Two Kentucky Reservoirs., Richard Scott Pirkle 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water treatment facilities strive to provide potable drinking water to the community which they service. The most common way of insuring drinkable water that is free of pathogens is water chlorination, but this can lead to the production of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts. This study looks at two drinking water reservoirs that have known United States Environmental Protection Agency minimum contaminant level violations of trihalomethanes (THMs), a disinfection byproduct. Physical and chemical parameters of the two lakes were measured over the course of 13 months and analyses indicated that nitrate and soluble reactive phosphorus, along with temperature and pH, played a …

Evolutionary Theory And Political Leadership:Why Certain People Do Not Trust Decision Makers, Kevin Smith, Christopher W. Larimer, Levente Littvay, John R. Hibbing May 2007

Evolutionary Theory And Political Leadership:Why Certain People Do Not Trust Decision Makers, Kevin Smith, Christopher W. Larimer, Levente Littvay, John R. Hibbing

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Central to social systems are the attitudes of the rank and file toward those who make political decisions (leaders), and attitudes toward leaders are known to be characterized by two fundamental features. First, the modal attitude is acceptance of the necessity of leaders coupled with acute aversion to leaders who are believed to be motivated by ambition and avarice; second, people are highly variable with some being markedly more sensitive than others to the traits of leaders. But the theoretical basis for these empirical facts has yet to be fully elucidated. In this article, we offer such a theory by …

United States Food Law Update, A. Bryan Endres May 2007

United States Food Law Update, A. Bryan Endres

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Michael T. Roberts and Margie Alsbrook noted in the Journal's inaugural Food Law Update that "[t]he one constancy about food law in the United States is change, especially in a rapidly-developing food industry." This observation holds true today and also augurs a change in authorship of this section of the Journal. I hope to follow my colleagues' lead and provide timely and cogent updates of the federal (and occasionally state) statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions impacting food law and policy. It is both an honor and a duty, as food and its legal implications remain in many respects "the world's …
