Characterization Of Synthetic Dna Bar Codes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene-Deletion Strains, Kevin Pierre Anthony
Characterization Of Synthetic Dna Bar Codes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene-Deletion Strains, Kevin Pierre Anthony
Theses (Pre-2016)
Incorporation of strain-specific synthetic DNA tags into yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene-deletion strains has enabled identification of gene functions by massively parallel growth rate analysis. However, it is important to confirm the sequences of these tags, because mutations introduced during construction could lead to significant errors in hybridization performance. To validate this experimental system, we . sequenced 11,812 synthetic 20-mer molecular bar codes and adjacent sequences (>1.8 megabases synthetic DNA) by pyrosequencing and Sanger methods. At least 31% ofthe genome-integrated 20-mer tags contain differences from those originally synthesized. However, these mutations result in anomalous hybridization in only a small subset …

Recall And Comprehension Of Signs By High School Asl Students:A Study Of Two Movie Formats For An Online Lexical Database, Maria Tedeschi
Theses
This study compared two technical sign movie formats, Quicktime (2D) and threedimentional animations (3D) and examined recall, comprehension, and rehearsal time of signs. There was no significant difference found between the formats for comprehension and recall. However, for rehearsal the high school students had significantly higher sign production scores after viewing 2D signs as comparaed to 3D signs. In addition, there was a significant difference found relating to gender. Girls scored significantly higher on all three measures, regardless of the movie format. In addition, students with more than two years experience with ASL scored significantly higher than those with less …

"The ß-hydroxyethylperoxy (I) and ß-hydroxyethoxy (III) radicals are prototypes of species that can undergo hydrogen atom transfer across their intramolecular hydrogen bonds. These reactions may play an important role in both the atmosphere and in combustion systems. We have used density functional theory and composite electronic structure methods to predict the energetics of these reactions, RRKM/master equation simulations to model the kinetics of chemically activated I, and variational transition state theory (TST) to predict thermal rate constants for the 1,5-hydrogen shift in I (Reaction 1) and the 1,4-hydrogen shift in III (Reaction 2). Our multi-coefficient Gaussian-3 calculations predict that Reaction …
Bayesian Bivariate Image Analysis With Application To Dual Autoradiography, Timothy D. Johnson, Morand Piert
Bayesian Bivariate Image Analysis With Application To Dual Autoradiography, Timothy D. Johnson, Morand Piert
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We present a Bayesian bivariate image model and apply it to a study that was designed to investigate the relationship between hypoxia and angiogenesis in an animal tumor model. Two radiolabeled tracers (one measuring angio- genesis, the other measuring hypoxia) were simultaneously injected into the animals, the tumors removed and autoradiographic images of the tracer concentrations were obtained. We model correlation between tracers with a mixture of bivariate normal distributions and the spatial correlation inherent in the images by means of the celebrated Potts model. Although the Potts model is typically used for image segmentation, we use it solely as …

A Hierarchical Analysis Of Habitat Selection By Raccoons In Northern Indiana, James C. Beasley, Travis L. Devault, Monica I. Retamosa, Olin E. Rhodes Jr.
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Although numerous studies have examined habitat use by raccoons (Procyon lotor), information regarding seasonal habitat selection related to resource availability in agricultural landscapes is lacking for this species. Additionally, few studies using radiotelemetry have investigated habitat selection at multiple spatial scales or core-use areas by raccoons. We examined seasonal habitat selection of 55 (31 M, 24 F) adult raccoons at 3 hierarchical orders defined by the movement behavior of this species (second-order home range, second-order core-use area, and third-order home range) in northern Indiana, USA, from May 2003 to June 2005. Using compositional analysis, we assessed whether habitat …

Origanum majorana Linn. (Family- Labiatae) is a herb, commonly grows in Mediterranean regions. The plant has been used in the treatment of diseases related to the nervous system as an antiepileptic and sedative drug in traditional medicines. In this study, anticonvulsant and sedative activities for different extracts of aerial parts (leaves and stems) of O. majorana are evaluated. An anticonvulsant effect of O. majorana was investigated using the Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) and maximal electroshock (MES) test The pet ether, chloroform, acetone, methanol and aqueous extracts (PEOM, CEOM, ACEOM, MEOM, and AQEOM respectively) of O. majorana exhibited anticonvulsant effect in both the …
Cheat River, Kelly Mcquain
Cheat River, Kelly Mcquain
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Cheat River is a novel about balancing family obligations against self-preservation. That is what's at stake for Allison and Andrew McKenna, a pair of siblings in rural Appalachia who must endure their father's abandonment and their pregnant mother's breakdown. At first, the two find solace from their parents' problems on the banks of the river from which the novel takes its name. But eventually, Andrew's homosexual feelings drive him to the bohemian streets of Philadelphia in the early '90s where he falls in with political activists and a household of misfits. He disappears, and Allison comes to the city to …

Newer Versions Of The Same Thing, John Fields
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
I am interested in the role photographs play in the everyday life of contemporary society, and more specifically the people and memories that occupy those photographic images. In my work I attempt to take the specific moments caught in seemingly meaningless photographs and elevate their importance through painting and animation. I want to linger on the idea of experience and the closing gap between real-life experience and the experience gained through viewing man-made images.
Putting Makeup On Dead People, Jennifer Violi
Putting Makeup On Dead People, Jennifer Violi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Putting Makeup on Dead People is a collection of ten short stories narrated by Donna that relate key moments in her life from early childhood through her mid-thirties. Because of the author's belief in the circularity of time and of what makes up human identity (what we do, what happens to us, to whom we are related), the stories do not progress chronologically. The collection pays particular attention to Donna's relationship with key family members: her father Nicky, her mother Martha, her Uncle Lou, her Aunt Selena, and her siblings, Linnie and B. Many of the stories also attend to …

Slapstick Carnage: The Absurd Universe Of Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian, James Marler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the function and effect of black comedy in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. Several different explanations for the presence of comedy in such a relentlessly violent novel have been made: that this humor is simply a realistic depiction of the folksy, dry vernacular of the time; that it reinforces the idea that the characters are so morally bankrupt that they are able to make jokes in the midst of so much destruction; or, that it serves to keep the reader's sensibilities in a state of flux between attraction and revulsion: relieving tension, then …

Historical Land Fragmentation And Its Effects On Genetic Diversity And Parasitism Of Island Populations Of Podarcis Erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), Heather Hurston
Historical Land Fragmentation And Its Effects On Genetic Diversity And Parasitism Of Island Populations Of Podarcis Erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), Heather Hurston
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Pleistocene land bridge islands in the Aegean Sea make an ideal natural experimental system for testing how island age, area and isolation affect genetic variation. My research focuses on the population genetics of the Aegean wall lizard Podarcis erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), which because of its wide distribution, and poor dispersal abilities is a sensitive indicator of fragmentation history. I predict that genetic diversity will be positively correlated with island area and negatively correlated with age. I also predict that island characteristics, host genetic variability or grazing may impact parasite prevalence. Findings showed that larger islands maintained more genetic diversity …
Analysis Of Oocyte Quality In The Rhesus Macaque (Macaca Mulatta), Stephanie Nichols
Analysis Of Oocyte Quality In The Rhesus Macaque (Macaca Mulatta), Stephanie Nichols
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Many primate populations face the threat of extinction due to habitat loss, intensive agriculture, hunting for meat, the pet trade and/or use in traditional medicines. An alternative approach to in situ conservation includes gene banking and the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Although many of these 'high-tech' solutions have not yet been proven viable for pragmatic wildlife conservation, basic research and development of these emerging tools can provide necessary information needed to optimize these techniques and institute ART as a routine practice in conservation efforts. A severely …

The Tigers And The Army: The Lsu School Of Medicine During World War Ii, Victoria Barreto
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The art of medicine has long found its most difficult challenges on fields of battle. During World War II, medical schools like the Louisiana State University School of Medicine were forced to play a larger role in total warfare. They served the medical needs of both civilians and soldiers by providing more doctors for the homefront and sponsoring medical units that served abroad. LSU sponsored the 64th General Hospital, which served in both the North African and Italian theaters. Clearly, then, the story of the LSU School of Medicine during World War II provides a glimpse into the intricate collision …
Race & Crime On The Evening News: New Orleans In The Days After Hurricane Katrina, Kristin Ashby Schwartz
Race & Crime On The Evening News: New Orleans In The Days After Hurricane Katrina, Kristin Ashby Schwartz
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were depicted on a variety of evening news programs in the days after hurricane Katrina. A qualitative content analysis of television news transcripts and select audio-visual footage reveals how the media framed crime, the perpetrators of crime and "looting." Media perpetuation of myths such as residents shooting at helicopters and the focus on "looting" and crime had on initial rescue and recovery efforts are also discussed. Results illustrate that the focus on crime, criminals, and looting was more pronounced in cable than network news. Looting was framed as a criminal endeavor …

Smart Growth Initiatives And Their Ability To Enhance The National Security Of The U.S., Donald Letterle
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The beginning of the 21st Century has presented the United States with many new challenges. One of the most significant challenges we face are domestic and foreign security issues. Though traditionally the U.S. has relied on military and law enforcement agencies to address security related matters, in the wake of new pressing concerns such as terrorism, foreign fuel reliance and environmental degradation it has become apparent that other alternatives must be examined. One such alternative is the implementation of smart growth initiatives into current urban and sub-urban planning processes. The implementation of these initiatives into existing and new development will …
First Flush Characterization Of Storm Water Runoff, Simon Ringler
First Flush Characterization Of Storm Water Runoff, Simon Ringler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This proposed research focused on the characterization of first flush in storm water runoff from elevated roadways, to assist the establishment of a storm water program and to facilitate the selection of treatment technology. Storm water runoff from highways transports a significant load of contaminants, especially heavy metals and particulate matter, to receiving waters. Heavy metals, either in dissolved or particulate bound phases, are unique in the fact that unlike organic compounds, they are not degraded in the environment. The objective was to develop a mass loading based diagram of the "first flush." In order to achieve this goal, a …

Long And Short-Term Morphologic Evolution And Stratigraphic Architecture Of A Transgressive Tidal Inlet, Little Pass Timbalier, Louisiana, Michael David Miner
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The majority of changes to barrier island shorelines can be attributed to tidal inlet processes, and therefore an understanding of these processes is important to effectively manage barrier systems. High rates of relative sea-level rise within the Mississippi River delta plain have resulted in rapid landwardmigration of barrier island and tidal inlet systems. Moreover, ongoing conversion of back barrier and interior wetlands to open water increases tidal exchange. Enlarging tidal prisms, together with the landward migration of the barrier systems, results in a dynamic environment within which tidal inlets undergo vast changes in position, geometry, and shoreline morphology. Historic bathymetric …
