Effects Of Shipping And Heat Stress On Embryonic Mortality In Cattle, Sarah Fields, George Perry Jun 2007

Effects Of Shipping And Heat Stress On Embryonic Mortality In Cattle, Sarah Fields, George Perry

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Embryonic loss is the greatest economic loss in the cow/calf industry, affecting number of cows carrying to term and percent calf crop weaned. Fertilization rates are usually between 90% and 100% when semen is present at ovulation. Fertilization usually takes place, but conception rates (number of animals that conceive divided by number of animals inseminated) are usually around 70% for natural service or artificial insemination. Although nature (poor oocyte quality, disease, chromosomal abnormalities, etc.) contributes much of this loss, management practices can also increase embryonic mortality. Stress, particularly heat and shipping stress, can be detrimental to embryos and decrease pregnancy …

Multiscale Mode Dynamics Of A Tethered Membrane, Ras B. Pandey, Kelly L. Anderson, B. L. Farmer Jun 2007

Multiscale Mode Dynamics Of A Tethered Membrane, Ras B. Pandey, Kelly L. Anderson, B. L. Farmer

Faculty Publications

Stochastic dynamics of a tethered membrane with a bond-fluctuating coarse-grained Monte Carlo simulation shows, in addition to diffusion, nondiffusive behavior sensitive to the type of membrane, its size, and quality of the solvent. Motion of the membrane’s center node is described by the variation of the mean-square displacement (R2n) with time step (t), i.e., R2n∝t2ν with the exponent ν≃1/8−1∕6 in the short time followed by subdiffusive power laws (i.e., ν∼1∕5, 1∕10) in the intermediate time regimes before reaching diffusion ν=1. The crossover between in-plane wrinkle modes is identified from the segmental (node) motion of the membrane.

Behavioral Tolerance Under Variable Ratio Schedules Of Reinforcement, Barry Eshkol Adelman Jun 2007

Behavioral Tolerance Under Variable Ratio Schedules Of Reinforcement, Barry Eshkol Adelman

Dissertations

Previous studies (e.g., Hoffman, Branch, & Sizemore, 1987) have demonstrated that greater drug tolerance develops in responding under fixed-ratio (FR) schedules of reinforcement when the schedule parameter is small than when it is large; little research has been done on related schedules such as variable-ratio (VR). In Experiment 1, three pigeons responded under a multiple FR 5 FR 125 VR 5 VR 125. A range of prechronic doses of cocaine produced dose-dependent reductions in response rates under the component schedules. Following chronic dosing with daily administrations of 5.6 mg/kg, similar dose-response curves were derived by substitutions of the usual dose. …

Implications Of Research On Expertise For Curriculum And Pedagogy, David F. Feldon Jun 2007

Implications Of Research On Expertise For Curriculum And Pedagogy, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Instruction on problem solving in particular domains typically relies on explanations from experts about their strategies. However, research indicates that such self-reports often are incomplete or inaccurate (e.g., Chao & Salvendy, 1994; Cooke & Breedin, 1994). This article evaluates research on experts’ cognition, the accuracy of experts’ self-reports, and the efficacy of instruction based on experts’ self-reports. Analysis of this evidence indicates that experts’ free recall of strategies introduces errors and omissions into instructional materials that hinder student success. In contrast, when experts engage in structured knowledge elicitation techniques (e.g., cognitive task analysis), the resultant instruction is more effective. Based …

Welfare By Any Other Name: Tax Transfers And The Eitc, Dennis Ventry Jun 2007

Welfare By Any Other Name: Tax Transfers And The Eitc, Dennis Ventry

American University Law Review

Tax credits, particularly refundable tax credits, are viewed increasingly as a social policymaking magic bullet. Indeed, the tax instrument can be a particularly effective and efficient mechanism for delivering social welfare benefits. However, deploying uniform refundable credits or universal tax subsidies will not solve all anti-poverty woes. In particular, over-reliance on the tax instrument blinds policymakers to a more fundamental conundrum that has plagued government transfers for over thirty years: What exactly is the government trying to accomplish by delivering social welfare benefits through the tax system? The Article explores this systemic question, and poses two further questions. First, what …

The Physical Origin Of Negative Superhumps In Cataclysmic Variables, Matt A. Wood, Christopher J. Burke Jun 2007

The Physical Origin Of Negative Superhumps In Cataclysmic Variables, Matt A. Wood, Christopher J. Burke

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

It has been suspected for over 20 years that the observed negative superhumps in cataclysmic variables are due to the retrograde precession of a tilted disk. We present new smooth particle hydrodynamics simulation results that demonstrate that the source of the modulation of the luminosity of the light in a negatively superhumping cataclysmic variable is the transit of the bright spot across the face of an accretion disk that is tilted out of the orbital plane. In an untilted disk the bright spot is always located on the outer edge of the disk, and the intrinsic brightness of the accretion …

The Effects Of Testosterone On The Induction Of Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Travis William Reed Jun 2007

The Effects Of Testosterone On The Induction Of Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Travis William Reed

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis (EAT) could not be induced in young, immature Sprague-Dawley rats (150-200g). EAT was successfully induced in the same group of animals when they weighed 400g. The animals developed the disease every time. Sexual immaturity or immaturity of the immune system may be responsible for these results (Fernandez, 2006). It has been proven that pharmacologic doses of testosterone have shown immunosuppressive effects on the severity of EAT in the PVG/c strain of rats (Ahmed et al, 1982). In this current thesis research, it appears that normal physiologic levels of testosterone have no effect on the development and severity …

The Global Hepatic Transcriptional Response Of Male Fisher Rats To Dietary Aroclor 1254 Exposure, Trisha M. Basford Jun 2007

The Global Hepatic Transcriptional Response Of Male Fisher Rats To Dietary Aroclor 1254 Exposure, Trisha M. Basford

Dissertations

Dietary intake is a primary route for biomagnification of environmentally persistent polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) within humans and animals. Aroclor 1254, a mixture of PCBs, is associated with a variety of toxic responses including alterations in blood and lipid biochemistry and tumor promotion. Measurement of the transcriptional responses to low-level dietary exposure to A1254 has not been reported to date, and is important given the persistence of PCBs, and range of effects associated with exposure. The aims of this study were to characterize changes in rat hepatic global gene expression due to sub-acute and sub-chronic dietary exposure to A1254, and to …

Thereby Become A Monster: Complex Organizations And The Torture At Abu Ghraib, Janine A. Bower Jun 2007

Thereby Become A Monster: Complex Organizations And The Torture At Abu Ghraib, Janine A. Bower

Dissertations

Reasearch and theory on organizational crime and deviance suggest organizational offending includes aspects of the environment, organizational characteristics (such as tasks, structure, and processes), and cognition, and is systematically produced by the combination of these three. This research is an examination of the organization of the Abu Ghraib detention and interrogation facility in Iraq, the location of prison abuses now made infamous following their public disclosure in 2004. An ethnographic content analysis of documents was performed to probe organizational culture, structure and processes, and their intersection with individual biographies and contextual forces. While public questions focused on why seemingly ordinary …

Characterization Of Molecular Events Following Heavy Metal Cadmium Exposure: A Cellular Regulatory Symphony In Response To Early Cadmium Insult, Chin-Ju Jean Hsiao Jun 2007

Characterization Of Molecular Events Following Heavy Metal Cadmium Exposure: A Cellular Regulatory Symphony In Response To Early Cadmium Insult, Chin-Ju Jean Hsiao

Dissertations

Cadmium, a non-essential toxic heavy metal, has been classified as a human carcinogen and one of the most hazardous substances in our environment. Since it can circulate within the food chain, has a long biological half-life and can bio-accumulate, it has the potential to induce detrimental health effects linked to toxicity, cancer and chronic diseases.

In recent years progress has been made to dissect and understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of cadmium exposure. However, few studies have focused on investigating potential protective and/or defense mechanisms naturally applied by cells upon initial exposure, prior to any damage or toxic …

Structure-Function Studies Of Self- Assembling Flagellin Proteins Fromsalmonella Typhimurium And Aquifex Pyrophilus, Venkata Raghu Ram Malapaka Jun 2007

Structure-Function Studies Of Self- Assembling Flagellin Proteins Fromsalmonella Typhimurium And Aquifex Pyrophilus, Venkata Raghu Ram Malapaka

Dissertations

The eubacterial flagellum is a complex structure with an elongated extracellular filament that is primarily composed of a single protein termed flagellin. The highly conserved N-and C- termini of flagellin are important in its export and assembly, whereas the middle "hypervariable" region is highly variable in size across different species and is largely dispensable. InSalmonella typhimurium phase 1 flagellin (FliC), this hypervariable region encodes two solvent-exposed D2 and D3 domains. The functional role of this knob-like structural feature in motility remains unclear. The structural and physiological role of the hypervariable region in flagellar assembly, stability and cellular motility was investigated. …

A Role Of Problem-Solving In Complex Intraverbal Repertoires, Rachael A. Sautter Jun 2007

A Role Of Problem-Solving In Complex Intraverbal Repertoires, Rachael A. Sautter

Dissertations

kinner described intraverbal behavior as verbal behavior with no point-to-point correspondence between the stimulus and the response. This verbal operant encompasses a wide range of response topographies ranging from answering simple questions to complex conversational exchanges. Previous interventions for teaching complex responding to questions about category membership have focused primarily on transfer of stimulus control procedures to teach specific intraverbal responses. These procedures have proven effective at establishing basic intraverbal responses but have consistently produced small and somewhat restricted repertoires. Theoreticians have hypothesized that effective use of problem-solving strategies rather than simple stimulus control may account for the performance of …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Smooth muscle myosin heavy chains occur in 2 isoforms, SMA (slow) and SMB (fast). We hypothesized that the SMB isoform is predominant in the faster-contracting rat vena cava compared to thoracic aorta. We compared the time to half maximal contraction in response to a maximal concentration of endothelin-1 (ET-1; 100 nM), potassium chloride (KCl; 100 mM) and norepinephrine (NE; 10 µM). The time to half maximal contraction was shorter in the vena cava compared to aorta (aorta: ET-1 = 235.8 ± 13.8 s, KCl = 140.0 ± 33.3 s, NE = 19.8 ± 2.7 s; vena cava: ET-1 = 121.8 …

Systems Metaphysics: A Bridge From Science To Religion, Martin Zwick Jun 2007

Systems Metaphysics: A Bridge From Science To Religion, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

'Systems theory' is familiar to many as the scientific enterprise that includes the study of chaos, networks, and complex adaptive systems. It is less widely appreciated that the systems research program offers a world view that transcends the individual scientific disciplines. We do not live, as some argue, in a post-metaphysical age, but rather at a time when a new metaphysics is being constructed. This metaphysics is scientific and derives from graph theory, information theory, non-linear dynamics, decision theory, game theory, generalized evolution, and other transdisciplinary theories. These 'systems' theories focus on form and process, independent of materiality; they are …

A Theoretical Model For Blood Flow In Small Vessels, V. P. Srivastava Jun 2007

A Theoretical Model For Blood Flow In Small Vessels, V. P. Srivastava

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A two-fluid model consisting of a core region of suspension of all the erythrocytes (particles) in plasma (fluid) assumed to be a particle-fluid mixture and a peripheral layer of cell-free plasma (Newtonian fluid), has been proposed to represent blood flow in small diameter tubes. The analytical results obtained in the proposed model for effective viscosity, velocity profiles and flow rate have been evaluated numerically for various values of the parameters available from published works. Quantitative comparison has shown that present model suitability represents blood flow at hematocrit (less than or equal to 40%) and in vessels up to 70 micrometers …

Development And Evaluation Of A Simulation System Based Upon Standard Pedestrian Thoroughfare Methodologies, Charles O. Pringle

All Master's Theses

This study was undertaken to determine whether existing simulation and modeling systems could be used to analyze and model pedestrian traffic flows. The study incorporates the Highway Capacity Manual 2000 (HCM) (Transportation Research Board, National Research Council [TRB], 2000a) methodologies into a ProModel simulation and then compares and contrasts the results of the HCM calculations with the ProModel simulation.

(Post)Colonising Disability, Mark Sherry Jun 2007

(Post)Colonising Disability, Mark Sherry

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Disability and postcolonialism are two important, and inter-related, discourses in the social construction of the nation and those bodies deemed worthy of citizenship rights. This paper acknowledges the material dimensions of disability, impairment -and postcolonialism and its associated inequalities – but it also highlights the rhetorical connections which are commonly made between elements of postcolonialism (exile, diaspora, apartheid, slavery, and so on) and experiences of disability (deafness, psychiatric illness, blindness, etc.) The paper suggests that researchers need to be far more careful in their language around experiences of both disability and postcolonialism. Neither disability nor postcolonialism should be understood as …

The Pharmacokinetics Of Taurolidine Metabolites In Healthy Volunteers., Li Gong, Howard E Greenberg, James L Perhach, Scott A Waldman, Walter K. Kraft

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Taurolidine is an experimental antibacterial and antiendotoxic compound whose clinical utility as an antitumor agent is being investigated in human clinical trials. Taurolidine in aqueous solution exists in equilibrium with taurultam. Taurultam is subsequently transformed to taurinamide. The pharmacokinetic profiles of these metabolites are not well established. In this study, 18 healthy volunteers were administered 5.0 g of taurolidine in 250 mL of 5% polyvinylpyrrolidone in water over 2, 1, or 0.5 hours by intravenous infusion in a parallel-group design. All subjects noted discomfort at the infusion site, although there were no serious adverse events. t(max) generally occurred at the …

An Age-Structured Resource-Consumer Dynamical Model, Jean M. Tchuenche Jun 2007

An Age-Structured Resource-Consumer Dynamical Model, Jean M. Tchuenche

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Many dynamical systems in population biology in which agents compete for resources may exhibit chaotic fluctuations. This short letter develops Gamarra and Solé's previous work. We briefly review a classical model of population with complex dynamics, and proceed to study the dynamics of an age-structured resource-consumer model, in which the fertility coefficients are density independent. Implicit or first integral solutions of the model are obtained, and conditions for which they are stable given. It is observed that resource availability at any time depends on the number of potential consumers present.

Emotional Stroop Effects: Eating Disorders And Obesity, Kristy Anne Kuehfuss Jun 2007

Emotional Stroop Effects: Eating Disorders And Obesity, Kristy Anne Kuehfuss

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study addresses the effects of emotional valence on selective processing of body-shape related words in young women who suffer from anorexia, bulimia, or obesity, and non-clinical controls. Research in the area of emotional Stroop interference has indicated that persons with eating disorders, particularly anorectics, show elevated latencies in naming colors of words related to food or body-shape, in contrast to either neutral words, or to non-clinical control groups. One intriguing issue regarding the emotional Stroop interference among various clinical populations relates to the question of whether the interference is due to the emotionality of the relevant words or to …

Status And Distribution Of Manatees In Honduras And The Use Of Side-Scan Sonar, Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske Jun 2007

Status And Distribution Of Manatees In Honduras And The Use Of Side-Scan Sonar, Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

All manatee species are listed as endangered or vulnerable. Studying these animals is very challenging because of their reticent behavior and the remote and complex habitats in which they are found. This study dealt with three challenges in manatee conservation: identification of hotspots, manatee detection in turbid and tannin-stained waters, and regional collaboration between countries. Using the West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) as the study subject, these three challenges were examined and possible solutions were presented.

The distribution of manatees in Honduras is known from sporadic death reports and informal interviews. Like many other countries in Mesoamerica, Honduras had …

On The Tension Between Sex Equality And Religious Freedom, Cass R. Sunstein Jun 2007

On The Tension Between Sex Equality And Religious Freedom, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

When, if ever, is it legitimate for law to ban sex discrimination by religious institutions? It is best to approach this question by noticing that most of the time, ordinary civil and criminal law are legitimately applied to such institutions. For example, members of religious organizations cannot commit torts, even if the commission of torts is said to be part of their religious practices. Many people seem to accept what might be called an Asymmetry Thesis, which holds that sex equality principles may not be applied to religious institutions, whereas ordinary civil and criminal law may indeed be applied to …

Electromagnetic Differences In The Brain During Memory Retrieval, Warren Scott Merrifield Jun 2007

Electromagnetic Differences In The Brain During Memory Retrieval, Warren Scott Merrifield

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The primary objectives for this experiment were to analyze the neuroanatomical correlates of autobiographical, episodic and semantic memory, use a different paradigm to promote episodic memory retrieval, and employ a different analysis technique to understand retrieval processes. Autobiographical and episodic memories are personal memories from the past. Autobiographical is more general (e.g. a street name of a house growing up) and episodic is more specific to time (e.g. 13th birthday party that took place on a street). For autobiographical and episodic memory retrieval operations, there is no general consensus as to the localization of function, but bilateral activation of the …
