Estimates Of Genetic Parameters For Holstein Cows For Test-Day Yield Traits With A Random Regression Cubic Spline Model, B.J. Degroot, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck, Stephen D. Kachman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters were estimated with restricted maximum likelihood for individual test-day milk, fat and protein yields and somatic cell scores with a random regression cubic spline model. Test-day records of Holstein cows that calved from 1994 through early 1999 were obtained from Dairy Records Management Systems in Raleigh, North Carolina, for the analysis. Estimates of heritability for individual test-days and estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations between test-days were obtained from estimates of variances and covariances from the cubic spline analysis. Estimates were calculated of genetic parameters for the averages of the test days within each of the ten 30-day …

Project 1. Relict Leopard Frog Monitoring, Management, and Research

  • Nocturnal surveys completed at all natural and translocation sites – the most striking finding was the lack of frogs observed at Rogers Springs and lower Blue Point despite repeated survey efforts.
  • Relict leopard frog annual translocation effort completed – a total of 1957 tadpoles and juvenile frogs released at six translocation sites.
  • Potential translocation sites within Gold Butte assessed during site visits in late March.
  • Coordination and assistance provided to UNLV research efforts on habitat improvements at Blue Point and Rogers Springs, and with proposed FWS actions to construct a tadpole …

How Can Learning Centers Be Used To Support Classroom Instruction And Promote Critical Thinking In A Kindergarten Classroom?, Amelia M. Pellegrino

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how learning centers can be used in the Kindergarten classroom to support regular classroom instruction and encourage students to think critically. This qualitative study used observations, interviews, surveys, student work samples, photographs, and discussions to collect information about the effectiveness of learning centers in the classroom. Sixteen Kindergarten students participated in learning center activities planned and implemented by the researcher to examine how the learning centers related the curriculum and whether the activities encouraged students to think critically about the content. Dna Content Of Human Spermatozoa With Respect To Sperm Morphology, Munaf Salih Daoud

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The studies on the relationships of sperm morphology and DNA was backdated for nearly 25 years. DNA and morphology was studied in mammalian sperm by flow cytometry and DNA content of different sperm types for normal and abnormal subfertile humans was recorded. The effects of some factors like drugs, cigarette smoking, cryopreservation and sexual abstinence and others on sperm morphology and DNA damage, denaturation and fragmentation in both normal fertile and abnormal infertile men were reported. Several methods for the evaluation and estimation of DNA in spermatozoa have been reported. AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of the …

Prevalence Of Zoonotic Parasites In Stray Cats In Baghdad, Mahmoud N. Al-Khushali Jun 2007

Prevalence Of Zoonotic Parasites In Stray Cats In Baghdad, Mahmoud N. Al-Khushali

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: It is known in recent years that stray cats can transmit several serious zoonotic parasitic diseases to man especially immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study is to detect such parasites in stray cats in Iraq. METHODS: Serum and faecal samples were taken from 126 stray cats from different areas of Baghdad, subjected to serological test (IHAtest) and parasitological examination to detect cyst, oocyst, ova of zoonotic arasites ,as well as careful examination of skin and hair for ectoparasites. RESULTS: Positive seroprevalence (72.2%) for Toxoplasma gondii were found in stray cats, 114 examined cats (90.4%) were found to be infected with …

Light Microscopic Study Of The Effect Of Zinc On Liver In Mice, Ahmed Anwar Albir Jun 2007

Light Microscopic Study Of The Effect Of Zinc On Liver In Mice, Ahmed Anwar Albir

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: The study demonstrated that zinc affected the liver cells by giving the mice particular doses of zinc as Znso4. The mice were divided into four groups of 6 mice each. Both of moderate and high dose groups showed various degrees of degenerative changes in the hepatocytes, such as increased size and the presence of spaces, dark appearance of the cytoplasm, whereas none of these changes were present in both group I (controls) and group II (low dose group) . BACKGROUND: According to previous studies, there is a correlation between certain doses of zinc and the changes that may occur …

Cellmap: An Automated Multielectrode Array Cell Culture Analysis System Based On Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Abdur Rub Abdur Rahman Jun 2007

Cellmap: An Automated Multielectrode Array Cell Culture Analysis System Based On Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Abdur Rub Abdur Rahman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to develop fundamental understanding of cell-substrate (CS) and cell-cell (CC) interactions in the culture space for time evolving cell cultures. Space resolved CC and CS interactions are important indicators of cell-density distribution, localized cellular behavior, and multiple cell-layers which are differentiators of normal and abnormal cell behavior. In this research, CS and CC interactions and the variations therein due to a) Cell growth, 2) cell-drug interaction, and 3) effect of Cytotoxin were studied using multielectrode, multi-frequency Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Contemporary impedance based methods sense either CC or CS interaction as a space averaged …
