Climate Change, Energy Demand And Market Power In A General Equilibrium Model Of The World Economy, Roberto Roson, Francesco Bosello, Enrica De Cian Jul 2007

Climate Change, Energy Demand And Market Power In A General Equilibrium Model Of The World Economy, Roberto Roson, Francesco Bosello, Enrica De Cian

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Future energy demand will be affected by changes in prices and income, but also by other factors, like temperature levels. This paper draws upon an econometric study, disentangling the contribution of temperature in the determination of the annual regional demand for energy goods. Combining estimates of temperature elasticities with scenarios of future climate change, it is possible to assess variations in energy demand induced (directly) by the global warming. We use this information to simulate a change in the demand structure of households in a CGE model of the world economy, in a set of assessment exercises. The changing demand …

Perceptions Of Value: An Analysis Of New Jersey's Public And Private Four-Year Colleges And Universities To Determine If Adherence To Recognized Design Principles Increases The Perceived Value Of Their Institution, Kathryn Marie Ponzi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how closely four-year New Jersey colleges and universities, both public and private, adhere to general standards for home page layout and design. This study also looked to determine if adherence to proper design standards increase the perceived quality of the institution. Field experiment participants rated the home pages of six institutions chosen by the researcher in her content analysis. Using Likert-type questions, 23 students rated the home pages of the colleges and universities, yielding results supporting the initial claim: the more closely an institution adheres to certain home page design standards, the …

Palmitoylation And Oxidation Of The Cysteine Rich Region Of Snap-25 And Their Effects On Protein Interactions, Derek Luberli Martinez Jul 2007

Palmitoylation And Oxidation Of The Cysteine Rich Region Of Snap-25 And Their Effects On Protein Interactions, Derek Luberli Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

Neurons depend upon neurotransmitter release through regulated exocytosis to accomplish the immense processing performed within the central nervous system. The SNARE hypothesis points to a family of proteins that are thought to enable the membrane fusion that leads to exocytosis. The secondary structure of SNAP-25 is unique among SNARE proteins in that it has two alpha helical SNARE motifs and a cysteine rich (C85, C88, C90, C92) membrane interacting region but notransmembrane domain. The cysteines may be modified by palmitoylation or oxidation but the role of these modifications in vivo is not well understood. Our goal is to elucidate possible …

Cloning And Characterization Of The Salt Overly Sensitive 1 (Sos1) Gene In Chenopodium Quinoa Willd., Taylor Brian Turner Jul 2007

Cloning And Characterization Of The Salt Overly Sensitive 1 (Sos1) Gene In Chenopodium Quinoa Willd., Taylor Brian Turner

Theses and Dissertations

Salt tolerance is a commercially important trait that affects plant species around the globe. Cellular response to saline environments is a well studied but complex system that is far from being completely understood. The SALT OVERLY SENSITIVE 1 (SOS1) gene is a critical component of salt tolerance in many species, encoding a plasma membrane Na+/H+ antiporter that plays an important role in germination and growth in saline environments. Here we report a preliminary investigation of salt tolerance in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.). Quinoa is a halophytic grain crop of the Chenopodiaceae family with impressive nutritional content and an increasing world-wide …

Will As Commitment And Resolve: An Existential Account Of Creativity, Love, Virtue, And Happiness, John Davenport Jul 2007

Will As Commitment And Resolve: An Existential Account Of Creativity, Love, Virtue, And Happiness, John Davenport

Philosophy & Theory

In contemporary philosophy, the will is often regarded as a sheer philosophical fiction. In Will as Commitment and Resolve, Davenport argues not only that the will is the central power of human agency that makes decisions and forms intentions but also that it includes the capacity to generate new motivation different in structure from prepurposive desires.

The concept of "projective motivation" is the central innovation in Davenport's existential account of the everyday notion of striving will. Beginning with the contrast between "eastern" and "western" attitudes toward assertive willing, Davenport traces the lineage of the idea of projective motivation from …

Learning Russian Case Endings Through Model Sentences, Sara Lyn Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The current study examines aspects of the Russian language that are particularly challenging for English-speaking students. It focuses on the complexity of Russian's grammatical morphology, specifically Russian case endings. In this study, methods and theories from the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) are reviewed to support a study aide designed by the author to help students with the acquisition of Russian case endings. The proposed study aide consists of 24 sentences composed of high-frequency Russian words. The 24 sentences contain all regular (approximately 75) Russian case endings. The purpose of the model sentences is to teach case forms using …

The Origins, Evolution, And Phylogeny Of The Praying Mantises (Dictyoptera: Mantodea), Gavin John Svenson Jul 2007

The Origins, Evolution, And Phylogeny Of The Praying Mantises (Dictyoptera: Mantodea), Gavin John Svenson

Theses and Dissertations

The relatively small insect order Mantodea (praying mantises) is comprised of approximately 2,366 described species distributed in 436 genera. Members of the group occupy diverse habitats and are distributed across the globe, though their greatest numbers and diversity are concentrated primarily in the tropics. Though continental endemism is common, many groups have a broad global distribution. An immense diversity of morphology is exhibited across the order with adult mantises ranging in size from 2cm to ~25cm, and appearing like a dead leaf, a piece of quartz rock, or a blade of grass. The diversification and specialization of mantises in ecologically …

Sampling A Littoral Fish Assemblage: Comparison Of Small-Mesh Fyke Netting And Boat Electrofishing, Carl R. Ruetz Iii, Donald G. Uzarski, Damon M. Krueger, Edward S. Rutherford Jul 2007

Sampling A Littoral Fish Assemblage: Comparison Of Small-Mesh Fyke Netting And Boat Electrofishing, Carl R. Ruetz Iii, Donald G. Uzarski, Damon M. Krueger, Edward S. Rutherford

Peer-reviewed scientific publications

We compared small-mesh (4-mm) fyke netting and boat electrofishing for sampling a littoral fish assemblage in Muskegon Lake, Michigan. We hypothesized that fyke netting selects for small-bodied fishes and electrofishing selects for large-bodied fishes. Three sites were sampled during May (2004 and 2005), July (2005 only), and September (2004 and 2005). We found that the species composition of captured fish differed considerably between fyke netting and electrofishing based on nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Species strongly associated with fyke netting (based on NMDS and relative abundance) included the brook silverside Labidesthes sicculus, banded killifish Fundulus diaphanus, round goby Neogobius melanostomus, mimic …

Improving Pediatric Cardiology Consultation Methods By Introducing Digital Interactive 3-D Heart Models: A Proof Of Concept Study, Adam Verigan Jul 2007

Improving Pediatric Cardiology Consultation Methods By Introducing Digital Interactive 3-D Heart Models: A Proof Of Concept Study, Adam Verigan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of a pediatric cardiology consultation is to inform, or educate, the patient and family of all aspects surrounding a certain congenital heart defect. Consultation education methods and materials may include verbal descriptions, two-dimensional (2-D) heart diagrams, and take-home pamphlets. Because the human heart is a complex three-dimensional (3-D) object, the problem lies within the clarity to which these methods are performed by the doctors and understood by the patients and families. Therefore, during a consultation the cardiologist must a) possess the ability to describe a defect visually as well as verbally and b) ensure that the patient and …

Development Of A Simplified And Standardized Protocol With Potential For High-Throughput For Sperm Cryopreservation In Zebrafish Danio Rerio, Huiping Yang, Carrie Carmichael, Zoltan M. Varga, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Sperm cryopreservation offers potential for long-term storage of genetic resources. However, the current protocols for zebrafish Danio rerio are cumbersome and poorly reproducible. Our objective was to facilitate adoption of cryopreservation by streamlining methods from sperm collection through thawing and use. First, sperm activation was evaluated, and motility was completely inhibited when osmolality of the extender was ≥295-300 mOsmol/kg. To evaluate cryoprotectant toxicity, sperm were incubated with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N-dimethyl acetamide (DMA), methanol, or glycerol at 5, 10, and 15% concentrations. Based on motility, DMSO, DMA, and methanol (≤10%) were less toxic; therefore, sperm were cryopreserved using these cryoprotectants …
