Ranunculus Arvensis (Ranunculaceae), An Alien Weed New To Southern California, Richard E. Riefner Jr, Steve Boyd
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
We report the first known records of Ranunculus arvensis from southern California. This alien species shows a tendency to behave as a facultative wetland plant, and could become a pest in scoured washes and flood plains, ephemeral pools, and on disturbed stream banks in the coastal lowlands.

Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis explores different perspectives through the eyes of adults and children and how those perspectives are formed by their relationships with the people around them.” It tries to focus on characters who are struggling to survive by realizing their own value. Whether they are surviving illness, death, abandonment, or midnight car rides with drunken parents, each of these characters tries to make sense of their world and how they fit into it.”

Relaxin As A Diagnostic Tool For Pregnancy In The Coyote (Canis Latrans), Debra A. Carlson, Eric M. Gese
Relaxin As A Diagnostic Tool For Pregnancy In The Coyote (Canis Latrans), Debra A. Carlson, Eric M. Gese
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The diagnosis of pregnancy in the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) often employs specialized equipment, experienced staff, and the cooperation of the bitch. These procedures can be challenging when the subject is a wild canid, particularly in a field setting. In addition, reproductive hormone assays are unreliable as a diagnostic tool because the estrous profiles of pregnant and pseudopregnant canines are similar. However, research has demonstrated that the hormone relaxin can be detected in maternal blood after embryonic implantation, but remains negligible in non-pregnant females. We investigated the use of relaxin as a diagnostic marker of pregnancy in the …

On Sport and Society
It's difficult to know what to say about the Michael Vick story, and it might be wise to say nothing just yet. It does, however, bring to the forefront some interesting bits of history concerning what constitutes sport, the relationship of sport to gambling, the confluence of sport and masculinity, the evolution of what is seen as civilized and barbaric behavior, and the ways in which people react to that behavior.

Aquatic Invasive Species As Hazards On Water Resources And Ecosystems In Texas, T. L. Arsuffi, Earl Chilton
2007
Water losses due to invasive species cost Texas hundreds of thousands of acre feet of water per year, water unavailable for instream flows, irrigation and other human uses. Innovative, proactive ecological research and public and policy awareness and education initiatives are instrumental to preventing further invasions and managing existing exotic species impacts in Texas aquatic ecosystems.

Implementing An Agricultural Chemical Removal Project To Protect Water Quality, Nancy A. Toth
2007
The purpose of the Agricultural Chemical Removal Project was to remove pesticides and other chemicals from the McKenzie and Middle Fork Willamette Watersheds in order to protect a critical drinking and groundwater resource. The project was designed to allow growers in these watersheds to dispose of old pesticides, fertilizers, waste oil, and other chemicals at no cost or risk to themselves.

Waterborne Diseases: Linking Public Health And Watershed Data, Debalina Das, Sarah M. Dorner
2007
This paper presents Massachusetts as a case study for linking public health data of waterborne diseases with sources of drinking water, potential recreational exposures, as well as hydrologic, climatic, and land use data. Information of reported illnesses from known waterborne pathogens will be synthesized and the relationship of confirmed illnesses will be compared with available hydrologic data. The goal is to develop a pathogen vulnerability index for Massachusetts waters to improve estimates of exposure to pathogens given watershed conditions.

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We and others have shown that certain NSAIDs reduce secretion of Abeta42 in cell culture and animal models, and that the effect of NSAIDs on Abeta42 is independent of the inhibition of cyclooxygenase by these compounds. Since Abeta42 is hypothesized to be the initiating pathologic molecule in AD, the ability of these compounds to lower Abeta42 selectively may be associated with their protective effect. We have previously identified R-flurbiprofen (tarenflurbil) as a selective Abeta42 lowering agent with greatly reduced cyclooxygenase activity that …

Information concerning mites found in the hair of wild mammals of North America north of Mexico is summarized for records accumulated since a similar paper was published by Whitaker and Wilson in 1974. Chiggers, ticks and species that burrow into or under the skin are generally excluded although follicle-inhabiting mites are included. Included are lists a) of the mites organized taxonomically, b) hosts from which each species has been reported, and c) states and provinces citing references for each separate record.
Gis Analysis Of Lightning Strikes Within A Tornadic Environment, Richard Snow, Mary Snow, Nicole Kufa
Gis Analysis Of Lightning Strikes Within A Tornadic Environment, Richard Snow, Mary Snow, Nicole Kufa
Publications
Recent research suggests that a maximum rate of lightning strikes occurs at least 15 to 20 minutes prior to tornado formation within a supercell storm. These maxima are associated with strengthening updrafts as they appear in radar measurements. An increase in lightning rates correlates with an increase of shear in the lower part of the storm. In combination with a strong updraft or downdraft, this shear can provide the ingredients for rotation and possibly a tornado. Polarity reversal of lightning around the time of tornado touchdown also has been examined. Thus, increasing lightning flash rates and reversal of lightning strike …

This paper is part of a larger effort to analyze the United States vs. European Union dispute on biotechnology products before the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body (DSB).
Starting from May 2003, United States, Canada and Argentina requested consultations with the European Communities (hereinafter EC) regarding measures taken by the EC and its member States affecting the marketing of biotech products. According to United States, Canada and Argentina, the measures at issue were inconsistent with certain EC’s obligations under the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, the GATT 1994, the Agriculture Agreement and the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) …

Hunter-Gatherer Use Of Small Animal Food Resources: Coprolite Evidence, Karl J. Reinhard, J. R. Ambler, C. R. Szuter
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Faunal remains are commonly found in coprolites and provide direct evidence of animal consumption. An evaluation of hunter-gatherer coprolites from the Southwest United States shows that animal bone in coprolites can be used to assess patterns of hunting, food preparation, and general importance of small animals in diet. This is demonstrated by a comparison of faunal assemblages between two hunter-gatherer sites with respect to small animal hunting strategies. The sites are Dust Devil Cave on the Colorado Plateau, an Archaic winter habitation, and Hinds Cave, a warm season Archaic habitation in the lower Pecos of Texas. The results indicate that …

Regional Theatre Patronage: The Efficacy Of Integrated Marketing Communication On The 18-24 Age Cohort, Katherine A. Chronister
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to determine if an integrated marketing communication plan coupled with additional theatre education programs would increase patron growth and increase ticket sales in regional professional theatres and if the younger age cohort (18-24) will support regional professional theatre if supplemental programming meets their needs. This information was ascertained by conducting in-depth interviews over the phone with marketing/communication professionals at four separate regional theatres in each region of the United States. Fifty intercept surveys were also administered at two universities in the tri-state area to the 18-24 age group to see what motivated them to …
