An Efficient Asynchronous Peer To Peer Auction Using Yao Oblivious Transfer, Charles Lobo Aug 2007

An Efficient Asynchronous Peer To Peer Auction Using Yao Oblivious Transfer, Charles Lobo

All Theses

Distributed electronic auctions are increasingly preferred over centralized electronic auctions today. The success of peer-to-peer file sharing networks has made distributed electronic auctions a possibility. Due to trust and conflict of interest issues with centralized auctioneer systems, multiple auctioneers in distributed roles are preferred. However, there is a possibility of auctioneer node collusion [16] and auctioneer-bidder collusion and auctioneer-seller collusion in such mechanisms.
To overcome these problems, a new peer-to-peer auction protocol [17] with auctioneers forming auctioneer groups has been proposed. This protocol keeps the auctioneers honest by ensuring that no single auctioneer in the group has absolute control over …

Lipid Microdomains Are Involved In Adhesion Of Entamoeba Histolytica Trophozoites To Host Extracellular Matrix Components, Kriti Mittal

All Theses

Entamoeba histolytica is a parasitic human protozoan that infects 500,000,000 people worldwide annually. In the course of the parasite's life cycle, motile trophozoites breach the colonic mucosa, invade through the epithelial layer and extracellular matrix (ECM) and occasionally disseminate through portal blood vessels to distant organs. Membrane rafts are small heterogeneous, highly dynamic, sterol- and sphingolipid- enriched domains whose functional significance entails compartmentalization of cellular processes and regulation of cellular signaling. Recent studies reveal the physiological role of membrane rafts in adhesion to host epithelium in E. histolytica. In the current study we examined the role of lipid rafts …

Topology-Aware Transmission Scheduling For Distributed Highway Traffic Monitoring Wireless Sensor Networks, Devang Bagaria Aug 2007

Topology-Aware Transmission Scheduling For Distributed Highway Traffic Monitoring Wireless Sensor Networks, Devang Bagaria

All Theses

Wireless sensor networks have been deployed along highways for traffic monitoring. The thesis studies a set of transmission scheduling methods for optimizing network throughput, message transfer delay, and energy efficiency. Today's traffic monitoring systems are centrally managed. Several studies have envisioned the advantages of distributed traffic management techniques. The thesis is based on previously proposed hierarchical sensor network architecture, for which the routing and transmission scheduling methods are derived.
Wireless sensor networks have a lifetime limited by battery energy of the sensors. The thesis proposes to assign schedules for nodes to transmit and receive packets and turning off their radios …

Development Of A Microscopic Moirž Interferometry System, Jeremy Brougher Aug 2007

Development Of A Microscopic Moirž Interferometry System, Jeremy Brougher

All Theses

The human tooth is an amazing structure that is worthy of detailed research and analysis. For over half a century, various tests have been conducted to acquire more information about the structural and material properties of dentin, enamel, and the dentin-enamel junction. Unfortunately, variations still exist in the experimental results, even in the most recently collected data. The primary focus of the majority of material property testing on human teeth has been hardness testing utilizing indentation and nanoindentation analysis. However, several limitations still exist with the indentation technique. Thus, the moirŽ fringe analysis method, specifically microscopic moirŽ interferometry, has been …

Responses Of Problematic Cyanobacteria To Exposures Of Copper Containing Algaecides, O'Niell Tedrow Aug 2007

Responses Of Problematic Cyanobacteria To Exposures Of Copper Containing Algaecides, O'Niell Tedrow

All Theses

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are associated with production of potent hepatotoxins (Microcystis; microcystin) and dense surface and benthic mats (Lyngbya), which impede critical water resource usages. Water resource managers are in need of effective and efficient treatment techniques for these problematic algae in field situations. Applications of algaecides are considered in situations where algal problems become acute or when critical water usages are threatened. However, laboratory data are needed that accurately predict responses of algae prior to field-scale algaecide applications. Site water and algae were used in laboratory algal toxicity experiments to predict responses of the target alga following an algaecide …

A Proposed Character Animation Workflow For Digital Production Arts With Preparation For Cloth Dynamics, Kent Chan Aug 2007

A Proposed Character Animation Workflow For Digital Production Arts With Preparation For Cloth Dynamics, Kent Chan

All Theses

In a fast-paced production studio, procedures and standard operating practices have been created to ensure maximum use of resources, while being flexible enough to account for problems that might arise. For the animation section of the pipeline, it is imperative to produce animation in a timely manner so that the other sections of the pipeline that are dependent on animation can begin at an appropriate time. Using 'Mileena Malign' and 'SpaceCat' as case studies, a possible workflow for computer animation--specifically as it pertains to preparation for cloth dynamics--is developed, with highlights on the advantages and challenges encountered. This thesis presents …

An In Vitro Evaluation Of Dbm As A Tissue Engineered Scaffold, Stephanie Arnold Aug 2007

An In Vitro Evaluation Of Dbm As A Tissue Engineered Scaffold, Stephanie Arnold

All Theses

Over 500,000 bone graft procedures are performed each year in the United States. Bone grafting involves a surgical procedure to replace missing bone. Problems can arise with donor and defect sites during and after surgery, sometimes resulting in poor clinical results. The development and optimization of bone graft substitutes via a tissue engineering approach could markedly improve bone graft surgical outcome. Demineralized bone matrix (DBM), a bone graft material, is currently used in a clinical setting but has variable success rates.
The primary objective of the research presented in this thesis was to assess the cellular activity of D1 mouse …

Determining The Efficacy Of A Commercially Available Post-Thaw Bovine Semen Sexing Kit, Erin Curry Aug 2007

Determining The Efficacy Of A Commercially Available Post-Thaw Bovine Semen Sexing Kit, Erin Curry

All Theses

Swaying the bovine sex ratio is beneficial because dairy heifers are significantly more valuable than bull calves, whereas in the beef industry, bull calves are more desirable than females. Currently, there is no inexpensive, reliable, effective method for commercially separating X- and Y- bearing sperm. The objective of these experiments was to determine the efficacy of a commercially available post-thaw bovine semen sexing kit, HeiferPlusTM, which claims to sway the sex ratio in favor of female calves.
Three trials included the insemination of hyperstimulated cows with Control or HeiferPlusTM treated semen, non-surgical embryo collection on Day 7, and a novel …

Cross-Modal Effects On Learning: A Seismic Stimulus Improves Color Discrimination Learning In A Jumping Spider, Nicole D. Vandersal, Eileen Hebets Aug 2007

Cross-Modal Effects On Learning: A Seismic Stimulus Improves Color Discrimination Learning In A Jumping Spider, Nicole D. Vandersal, Eileen Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

The production of multimodal signals during animal displays is extremely common, and the function of such complex signaling has received much attention. Currently, the most frequently explored hypotheses regarding the evolution and function of complex signaling focus on the signal and/or signaler, or the signaling environment, while much less attention has been placed on the receivers. However, recent studies using vertebrates suggest that receiver psychology (e.g. learning and memory) may play a large role in the evolution of complex signaling. To date, the influence of multimodal cues on receiver learning and/or memory has not been studied in invertebrates. Here, we …

Feeding Performance In Hawaiian Stream Goby Fishes: Morphological And Functional Analysis, Takashi Maie Aug 2007

Feeding Performance In Hawaiian Stream Goby Fishes: Morphological And Functional Analysis, Takashi Maie

All Theses

Distributions of Hawaiian stream fishes are typically interrupted by waterfalls that divide streams into lower and upper segments. Larvae hatched upstream are flushed into the ocean, and must climb these waterfalls to reach adult habitats when returning back to freshwater as part of an amphidromous life cycle. Stream surveys and studies of climbing performance show that Lentipes concolor can reach fast-flowing upper stream segments, but that Awaous guamensis reaches only slower, lower stream segments. Gut content analyses for these two species indicate that diet differs between them only by 10% or less dry weight for most major components (mostly green …

A Statewide Biomarker Approach To Estimate Contaminant Effects In The Wadeable Streams Of South Carolina, Molly Keaton

All Theses

Freshwater species in South Carolina have been declining for many years. However, the threats that these organisms face from point and non-point source pollution are largely unknown. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) began a five year survey of the wadeable streams of South Carolina in May 2006. One of the purposes of this study was to use molecular biomarkers of contaminant exposure to fully assess the health of fish in South Carolina's freshwater streams. During the first year of the study, sunfish (Lepomis sp.) were sampled from May through September 2006 at randomly selected sites in three …

Glycosaminoglycan Stabilization Reduces Tissue Buckling In Bioprosthetic Heart Valves, Sagar Shah Aug 2007

Glycosaminoglycan Stabilization Reduces Tissue Buckling In Bioprosthetic Heart Valves, Sagar Shah

All Theses

Currently, bioprosthetic heart valves are crosslinked with glutaraldehyde to prevent tissue degradation and to reduce tissue antigenicity. Glutaraldehyde forms stable crosslinks with collagen via a Schiff base reaction of the aldehyde with an amine group of the hydroxylysine/lysine in collagen. However, within a decade of implantation, 20-30% of these bioprostheses will become dysfunctional and over 50% will fail due to degeneration within 12-15 years post-operatively.
Gylcosaminoglycans, a major constituent of valvular tissue, play an important role in maintaining a hydrated environment necessary for absorbing compressive loads, modulating shear stresses, and resisting tissue buckling. One of the disadvantages of glutaraldehyde crosslinking …

Modeling Wildland Fire Radiance In Synthetic Remote Sensing Scenes, Zhen Wang Aug 2007

Modeling Wildland Fire Radiance In Synthetic Remote Sensing Scenes, Zhen Wang

Theses

This thesis develops a framework for implementing radiometric modeling and visualization of wildland fire. The ability to accurately model physical and op- tical properties of wildfire and burn area in an infrared remote sensing system will assist efforts in phenomenology studies, algorithm development, and sensor evaluation. Synthetic scenes are also needed for a Wildland Fire Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems (DDDAS) for model feedback and update. A fast approach is presented to predict 3D flame geometry based on real time measured heat flux, fuel loading, and wind speed. 3D flame geometry could realize more realistic radiometry simulation. A Coupled Atmosphere-Fire …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Tropane Compounds As Potential Therapeutics For Drug Abuse, Harneet Kaur Aug 2007

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Tropane Compounds As Potential Therapeutics For Drug Abuse, Harneet Kaur

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to search for potential therapeutic agents for cocaine addiction, a novel class of compounds was synthesized and evaluated for in vitro dopamine and serotonin transporter affinities. These unique 3ƒÀ-aryl-3ƒ¿-arylmethoxytropane analogues incorporated the structure of dopamine selective 2-substituted-3-phenyltropanes and the design of serotonin selective meperidine derivatives. In general, the 3ƒÀ-aryl-3ƒ¿-arylmethoxytropane analogues exhibited greater potency for the serotonin transporter than the dopamine transporter. The most potent compounds of this series were 3ƒÀ-phenyl-3ƒ¿.(3, 4-dichlorophenyl)methoxy-8.azabicyclo [3.2.1]nortropane (Ki = 0.06 nM) and 3ƒÀ-(4Œ-chlorophenyl)-3ƒ¿.(4-chlorophenyl)methoxy-8. azabicyclo[3.2.1]nortropane (Ki = 0.09 nM) at the serotonin transporter and their binding affinities were equipotent with paroxetine and fluoxetine …

Chemical, Toxicological, And Microbial Characterization Of New Orleans Sediments Following Hurricane Katrina, Andrea Liebl Aug 2007

Chemical, Toxicological, And Microbial Characterization Of New Orleans Sediments Following Hurricane Katrina, Andrea Liebl

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and storm surges breached levees flooding much of New Orleans, Louisiana. One month after the storm, sediment was collected and toxicity was tested using Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos. Sediments with the highest contaminant levels showed the highest embryonic mortality and most delayed development. However, no sediment caused an increased mutant frequency. When the most contaminated site was resampled in February, 2006 contaminant levels and toxicity decreased. During toxicity testing, approximately 20% of embryos incubated with sediment from one of these sites died and turned red. A red bacterium was …

Such A Lot Of World, Julian Zabalbeascoa Aug 2007

Such a Lot of World is a collection of stories, essays, and vignettes that highlight various moments in the author´s life when he was traipsing across this planet of ours. The majority of these moments occur in Spain—a sad realization for the author, for he has visited many countries and very much so wanted to appear better traveled than this collection of stories lets on. The reader will be left with the impression that the author spent his junior year of college in Spain, returned to Europe to backpack for five months, and then had a few other trips here …

Engineering Saccharomyces Ceresisiae For The Secretion Of An Extracellular Lipase, Gaynelle Stewart Aug 2007

Engineering Saccharomyces Ceresisiae For The Secretion Of An Extracellular Lipase, Gaynelle Stewart

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Developing microbial systems capable of converting low cost lipids into value added products depends on the ability to acquire substrates from the growth media. Saccharomyces cerevisiae can acquire free fatty acids from the growth media and a portion of these lipids can be converted into new lipid products. However, they cannot acquire complex lipids from the growth media unless a nonspecific lipase is included. To circumvent lipase addition, we are genetically engineering S. cerevisiae to secrete a lipase into the growth media. We selected the LIP2 gene from Yarrowia lipolytica, which encodes a nonspecific lipase. Several modifications were made to …

The Decline Of Fowler's Toad (Bufo Fowleri) In Southern Louisiana: Molecular Genetics, Field Experiments And Landscape Studies, Laura Sanders Vogel Aug 2007

The Decline Of Fowler's Toad (Bufo Fowleri) In Southern Louisiana: Molecular Genetics, Field Experiments And Landscape Studies, Laura Sanders Vogel

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Two of the most pervasive threats to species biodiversity are invasive species and habitat loss and degradation. Invasive species are often relatively insensitive to disturbance and many expand their range into disturbed and fragmented habitats. This dissertation uses an interdisciplinary approach to investigate how anthropogenic habitat disturbance is precipitating a range expansion in an invasive toad species, Bufo nebulifer, which is driving a decline in its native congener, B. fowleri. I employed a remote sensing and GIS study using historical data to compare changes in the two species distributions and habitat changes, a molecular genetic study to identify interspecific hybrids …

Regulation Of Volume By Spermatozoa And Its Significance For Conservation Biology, Jennifer Barfield Aug 2007

Regulation Of Volume By Spermatozoa And Its Significance For Conservation Biology, Jennifer Barfield

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive science plays an important role in conservation biology. Quantitative studies of basic reproductive biology in wildlife are critical for the development of successful assisted reproductive technologies. Investigation of the volume regulatory mechanism of spermatozoa could produce options to improve the cryopreservation of spermatozoa and provide a non-hormonal contraceptive option for men, both of which could have significant impacts on global biodiversity preservation. Volume regulation of somatic cells involves the movement of osmolytes through various channels, including potassium channels. The potassium channels involved in volume regulation of human, monkey, and murine spermatozoa were investigated. Flow cytometry was used to gauge …

Review Of One Hundred Years Of Inquiry And Innovation: An Illustrated History Of The American Dairy Science Association, Edited By Coleen M. Jones, Dana W. R. Boden

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

In recognition of its centennial, the American Dairy Science Association (founded in July 1906) has produced this large (8 1/2 x 11) coffee-table book, chronicling the Association’s first 100 years. The book is richly illustrated with both black and white, and color photographs, gleaned from many academic dairy science programs, individual association members, and well-known dairy industry publications. Beginning with information on dairying prior to 1906 and the founding of the ADSA, the arrangement is then divided into 25-year intervals. Each of the four sections leads with a short overview of dairying, followed by line graphs of the number of …

Mutations in PROP1 are a common genetic cause of multiple pituitary hormone deficiency (MPHD). We used a comparative genomics approach to predict the transcriptional regulatory domains of Prop1 and tested them in cell culture and mice. A BAC transgene containing Prop1 completely rescues the Prop1 mutant phenotype, demonstrating that the regulatory elements necessary for proper Prop1 transcription are contained within the BAC. We generated DNA sequences from the PROP1 genes in lemur, pig, and five different primate species. Comparison of these with available human and mouse PROP1 sequences identified three putative regulatory sequences that are highly conserved. These are located …

Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales: Rhetoric And Gender In Marriage, Andrea Marcotte Aug 2007

Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales: Rhetoric And Gender In Marriage, Andrea Marcotte

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the Middle Ages, marriage represented a shift in the balance of power for both men and women. Struggling to define what constitutes the ideal marriage in medieval society, the marriage group of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales attempts to reconcile the ongoing battle for sovereignty between husband and wife. Existing hierarchies restricted women; therefore, marriage fittingly presented more obstacles for women. Chaucer creates the dynamic personalities of the Wife of Bath, the Clerk and the Merchant to debate marriage intelligently while citing their experiences within marriage in their prologues. The rhetorical device of ethos plays a significant role for …
