The Kinetic Responses And Foraging Behavior Of Drosophila Melanogaster Larvae, Abdul-Zahra Kadhem Mohammed Ali Sep 2007

The Kinetic Responses And Foraging Behavior Of Drosophila Melanogaster Larvae, Abdul-Zahra Kadhem Mohammed Ali

Baghdad Science Journal

Adaptive responses in larval behavior may be of two kinds: Taxis: This involves a change in direction relative to source of a stimulus. Kinesis: Kinesis has no directional component, but involves change in the rate of performance in response to a stimulus. Drosophila larvae exhibited flexible behavioral responses associated with food acquisition and selection for different environmental conditions. In this investigation, we are concerned explosively with kinetic responses to food viability. Third instar larvae were subjected to test for thirty minutes in each of the following conditions i) in distilled water, ii) in Ringer's solution, iii) in glucose solution and …

Using Grounded Theory To Understand Resiliency In Pre-Teen Children Of High-Conflict Families, Marlene Pomrenke Sep 2007

Using Grounded Theory To Understand Resiliency In Pre-Teen Children Of High-Conflict Families, Marlene Pomrenke

The Qualitative Report

Using grounded theory, this study identified factors that contributed to children’s ability to utilize their resilient attributes. Children between the ages of 9 and 12 from high-conflict separated or divorced families participated in a study that examined how family and community interactions promote resilient behaviour. Substantive-level theory gained from this study yielded that children from separated or divorced, high- conflict families exhibit resilient characteristics when family cohesion is used to incorporate additional family support systems, particularly step- parents and extended family members. External support systems, particularly peers, augment these resilient characteristics. In order to build resilience in pre-teen children parents …

Drosophila Piwi Associates With Chromatin And Interacts Directly With Hp1a, Brent Brower-Toland, Seth Findley, Ling Jiang, Li Liu, Hang Yin, Monica Dus, Pei Zhou, Sarah C.R. Elgin, Haifan Lin Sep 2007

Drosophila Piwi Associates With Chromatin And Interacts Directly With Hp1a, Brent Brower-Toland, Seth Findley, Ling Jiang, Li Liu, Hang Yin, Monica Dus, Pei Zhou, Sarah C.R. Elgin, Haifan Lin

Biology Faculty Research

The interface between cellular systems involving small noncoding RNAs and epigenetic change remains largely unexplored in metazoans. RNA-induced silencing systems have the potential to target particular regions of the genome for epigenetic change by locating specific sequences and recruiting chromatin modifiers. Noting that several genes encoding RNA silencing components have been implicated in epigenetic regulation in Drosophila, we sought a direct link between the RNA silencing system and heterochromatin components. Here we show that PIWI, an ARGONAUTE/PIWI protein family member that binds to Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), strongly and specifically interacts with heterochromatin protein 1a (HP1a), a central player in heterochromatic …

An Instructional Strategy For Pictorial Drawing, James L. Mohler Sep 2007

An Instructional Strategy For Pictorial Drawing, James L. Mohler

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

This contribution presents two major findings from a qualitative investigation into spatial ability. The elicited data suggested that one of the significant differences between individuals identified as high and low in spatial ability was their decomposition skill relative to spatial problems. Also revealing was the impact of frustration and anxiety on spatial functioning. The author discusses an instructional strategy for pictorial drawing that appeared effective for individuals solving pictorial drawing problems.

Gas Feedback On Stellar Bar Evolution, Ingo Berentzen, Isaac Shlosman, Inma Martinez-Valpuesta, Clayton Heller Sep 2007

Gas Feedback On Stellar Bar Evolution, Ingo Berentzen, Isaac Shlosman, Inma Martinez-Valpuesta, Clayton Heller

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We analyze evolution of live disk-halo systems with gas fractions, fgas ≤ 8% of the disk mass, for 5 Gyr. Specifically, we have addressed the issue of angular momentum (J) transfer from the gas to the stellar bar and its effect on the bar. We find that the bar weakening, reported in the literature, is not related to the gas, but is caused by the vertical buckling instability in the gas-poor disks and by a steep stellar heating by the central mass concentration (CMC) in the gas-rich disks. However, the gas has a profound effect on the …

We describe the object retrieval task of ImageCLEF 2007, give an overview of the methods of the participating groups, and present and discuss the results. The task was based on the widely used PASCAL object recognition data to train object recognition methods and on the IAPR TC-12 benchmark dataset from which images of objects of the ten different classes bicycles, buses, cars, motorbikes, cats, cows, dogs, horses, sheep, and persons had to be retrieved. Seven international groups participated using a wide variety of methods. The results of the evaluation show that the task was very challenging and that different methods …

Evaluating Bag-Of-Visual-Words Representations In Scene Classification, Jun Yang, Yu-Gang Jiang, Alexander G. Hauptmann, Chong-Wah Ngo Sep 2007

Evaluating Bag-Of-Visual-Words Representations In Scene Classification, Jun Yang, Yu-Gang Jiang, Alexander G. Hauptmann, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Based on keypoints extracted as salient image patches, an image can be described as a “bag of visual words” and this representation has been used in scene classification. The choice of dimension, selection, and weighting of visual words in this representation is crucial to the classification performance but has not been thoroughly studied in previous work. Given the analogy between this representation and the bag-of-words representation of text documents, we apply techniques used in text categorization, including term weighting, stop word removal, feature selection, to generate image representations that differ in the dimension, selection, and weighting of visual words. The …

Grist For The Sceptic's Mill: Rwanda And The African Peer Review Mechanism, Eduard Jordaan Sep 2007

Grist For The Sceptic's Mill: Rwanda And The African Peer Review Mechanism, Eduard Jordaan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The article delves into the impact of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to Rwanda's achievement of greater democracy and respect for political freedom. It aims to show the improbability that the APRM can influence the country due to its insufficient ability and volition to pressure further democratization and respect for political rights on Rwandan government, the APRM's optimistic view of political governance, and the APR Heads of State Forum's ratification of a program of action discounting the issues of democracy and political freedom. The author stresses that the weaknesses of APRM may be attributed to the existing reduced authorization …

Quantitative Study With Alumni: Final Report, The Lawlor Group

Data

In February of 2007, Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington, Illinois) retained The Lawlor Group (TLG) to conduct an Identity Assessment assignment as one part of its overall strategic planning effort. The purpose of the assignment is to help IWU better understand its identity and obtain a “collective sense of self” as it embarks on a new strategic plan. As part of that assignment—and to augment the investigation and information gathering for the overall assignment—TLG conducted a web survey with alumni. This research was intended to supplement our qualitative efforts during the site visit and provide quantitative data to support or refute …

Fluvial Geomorphologic And Hydrodynamic Assessment In The Tidal Portion Of The Lower Rio Grande River, Us-Mexico Borderland, Andrew Ernest, B. Bokhim, N. B. Chang, I. J. Huang Sep 2007

Fluvial Geomorphologic And Hydrodynamic Assessment In The Tidal Portion Of The Lower Rio Grande River, Us-Mexico Borderland, Andrew Ernest, B. Bokhim, N. B. Chang, I. J. Huang

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

With fast population growth and economic development in the US-Mexico Borderland, water diversion and usages has reduced the flow substantially in the Low Rio Grande River (LRGR). Tidal portion of the LRGR has posed an environmental drought issue since 1993 and the channel clogged with the invasion of non-native plants also causes environmental problems. As a result of the intensity of these natural and manmade factors, the Rio Grande stopped flowing to the sea in February 2001. The flows were reduced to a point that they were unable to push out the sand deposited at the mouth. Geomorphologic evolution in …

Prototype Speech Corpus, Dermot Campbell, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell

Conference papers

DIT’s prototype speech corpus allows language learners and researchers access to real, informal dialogues–not just the transcripts of dialogues. Because the dialogues were created at a very high acoustic level they are capable of being slowed down using a time-scaling tool for more detailed study of speech production. The recording methodology used produces a natural dialogue exhibiting all the features of native-to-native interchanges. The speech corpus is capable of serving the needs of students and researchers of spoken language. LinguaTag is the first prototype tool within the language work package in the FP6 EU project SALERO to automatically tag speech …

Assessment Of The Bill Emerson Memorial Cable-Stayed Bridge Based On Seismic Instrumentation Data, Genda Chen, Dongming Yan, Wenjian Wang, Man Zheng, Louis Ge, Frank Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, both ambient and earthquake data measured from the Bill Emerson Memorial Cable-stayed Bridge are reported and analyzed. Based on the seismic instrumentation data, the vibration characteristics of the bridge are investigated and used to validate a three-dimensional Finite Element (3-D FE) model of the bridge structure. The 3-D model is rigorous and comprehensive, representing realistic dynamic behaviors of the bridge. It takes into account the geometric nonlinear properties caused by cable sagging and soil-foundation-structure interaction in the Illinois approach of the bridge. The FE model is successfully verified and validated by using the natural frequencies and mode …

Theoretical Framework For Predicting Joint Reaction And Ground Reaction Forces In A Dynamic Pendulum Tree Model Of Human Motion, Peyman Rajai Aug 2007

Theoretical Framework For Predicting Joint Reaction And Ground Reaction Forces In A Dynamic Pendulum Tree Model Of Human Motion, Peyman Rajai

Theses

Lagrangian dynamics and the method of superfluous coordinates are applied to find ground and joint reaction forces on the human body modeled as a general branched 2-D pendulum tree system with arbitrary segments and arbitrarily distributed point masses. A theoretical framework is established for predicting these constraint forces during human motion and consequently their effects on dynamics, dynamic stability, energy efficiency and the potential of these forces to produce joint injury and/or pain. Applications to human walking are initiated. During idealized phases where there is only single point contact of the stance leg with the ground such as just after …
