Fungal Conversion And Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Processing For Value-Added Canola Oil, Meidui Dong
Fungal Conversion And Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Processing For Value-Added Canola Oil, Meidui Dong
All Dissertations
There is a growing awareness of health benefits of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) e.g. arachidonic acid (ARA, C20:4n6) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n3). In general, plant seed oil and animal fat do not contains long-chain PUFAs with more than eighteen carbons. This study investigated the feasibility for addition of ARA and EPA to canola oil through the fermentation of fungi, Mortierella alpina, using canola flake, cake or meal as substrates. Supercritical CO2 extraction was also investigated for lipid extraction. In addition, a supercritical CO2 explosion process was characterized and applied to enhance oil extraction using supercritical CO2 and to potentially …

The Molecular Characterization Of The Virus And Virus-Like Agents Present In Ta Tao 5 Germplasm Of Prunus Persica , Diana Marini
All Dissertations
Peach production in the southeastern United States is limited by late spring freezes. Ta Tao 5 germplasm, used either as an interstem or by chip bud inoculation, has been shown to delay bloom and avoid the effects of these late freezes. The growth modification is graft transmissible and the germplasm has been found to be infected with ACLSV, APruV-3, and PLMVd. Using a combination of PCR, cloning, and sequencing techniques, a molecular characterization of the three graft-transmissible agents present in Ta Tao 5 has been completed.
The complete nucleotide sequence of the genome of the isolate of ACLSV (ACLSV-Ta Tao …
Enhancing The Ability Of Panicum Virgatum To Survive Flooding And Its Effects On Soil Activity When Used For Lakeshore Stabilization, Lee Edwards
All Dissertations
Reservoirs in upstate South Carolina are subject to erosion and vegetation has been placed to help stabilize banks, but soils are nutrient-poor and have high bulk densities. Panicum virgatum L. (switchgrass) has been planted in several sites, and it is hypothesized that over time, changes in microbial activity and soil quality will occur in response to the planting. As vegetated sites aged, acid phosphomonoesterase, nitrate reductase, and dehydrogenase activity increased. Low values of nitrogen fixation and substrate-induced respiration were measured at all sites with no statistical differences between sites. Fatty acids indicative of Gram negative bacteria were found in vegetated …
Evaluation Of Human Prolactin, Its Antagonist, And Antagonist-Based Fusion Proteins As Chemopreventative And Therapeutic Agents, Seth Tomblyn
All Dissertations
Cancer is a collection of diseases with many different manifestations and is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Breast cancer accounts for nearly one third of cancer diagnosis in women. Prolactin (PRL) functions as a lactogen and as a mammary gland differentiation factor. PRL acts in an autocrine/paracrine manner within the mammary gland and in breast tumors which implies PRL may be involved in breast cancer progression. This is corroborated by the PRLR over-expression in breast cancer cells lines and the majority of patient biopsies. These reasons make PRL and PRLR attractive targets for breast cancer …
Diversity And Abundance Of Ants At Forest Edges , Eric Paysen
Diversity And Abundance Of Ants At Forest Edges , Eric Paysen
All Dissertations
Fragmented habitats are a common result of human activities that involve the clearing of native vegetation for various land uses. Habitat fragmentation has two primary and inseparable components: habitat loss and insularization. Landscape-level connectivity in fragmented habitats is diminished for many species, and edge characteristics become more important as the edge-to-interior ratio increases. The study of the effects of edges on biodiversity has compelled ecologists to study them for over a century and has influenced the design and management of natural preserves. Invasion of habitats by non-native species is a phenomenon that coincides with the increased human activity typical of …

The Role Of Carcinine In Signaling At The Drosophila Photoreceptor Synapse, Brendan A. Gavin, Susan E. Arruda, Patrick J. Dolph
The Role Of Carcinine In Signaling At The Drosophila Photoreceptor Synapse, Brendan A. Gavin, Susan E. Arruda, Patrick J. Dolph
Dartmouth Scholarship
The Drosophila melanogaster photoreceptor cell has long served as a model system for researchers focusing on how animal sensory neurons receive information from their surroundings and translate this information into chemical and electrical messages. Electroretinograph (ERG) analysis of Drosophila mutants has helped to elucidate some of the genes involved in the visual transduction pathway downstream of the photoreceptor cell, and it is now clear that photoreceptor cell signaling is dependent upon the proper release and recycling of the neurotransmitter histamine. While the neurotransmitter transporters responsible for clearing histamine, and its metabolite carcinine, from the synaptic cleft have remained unknown, a …
Use Of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy For Qualitative And Quantitative Analyses Of Grains And Cereal Products, Panjama Cheewapramong
Use Of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy For Qualitative And Quantitative Analyses Of Grains And Cereal Products, Panjama Cheewapramong
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of the first part of the study was to develop a simplified near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy method for detecting insect larvae in individual wheat kernels. Discriminant analysis, based on Mahalanobis distances calculated from log 1/R data at only four discrete wavelengths, yielded better results for classification of sound and insect infested wheat kernels than principal component analysis (PCA) using the spectral region from 1100 to 1900 nm. This simplified technique was then used to detect 3- and 4-week-old larvae of granary and maize weevils in wheat kernels. A model developed from a calibration set containing sound kernels and …
The Tryphê Of The Sybarites: A Historiographical Problem In Athenaeus, Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa Gorman
The Tryphê Of The Sybarites: A Historiographical Problem In Athenaeus, Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa Gorman
Department of History: Faculty Publications
A large number of the most informative fragments of the Hellenistic Greek historians are transmitted by Athenaeus. Unlike the frequently jejune evidence provided by scholiasts, lexicographers, and the like, these texts allow us to draw historiographical conclusions about lost writers: on this basis, scholars have posited, for example, the place of a given author in the Hellenistic “schools” of history. The importance of Athenaeus as a source for history-writing between Xenophon and Diodorus calls for detailed study of the Deipnosophist’s method of citing these lost authors. The present article focuses on Athenaeus’ testimony concerning the downfall of Archaic Sybaris through …
Effects Of Endurance Training On The Ampk Response To Exercise., David Gerald Chesser
Effects Of Endurance Training On The Ampk Response To Exercise., David Gerald Chesser
Theses and Dissertations
Activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) results in the upregulation of several intracellular systems which help to prepare a cell for a high energy challenge. The magnitude of the AMPK response to a 10 min bout of exercise has been found to decrease in red quadriceps (RQ) following training, while putative AMPK roles seem to be maintained; specifically, the biogenesis of mitochondria and higher levels of hexokinase II and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4). If the AMPK response to exercise is responsible in part for these adaptations, how can they be maintained if the AMPK response is attenuated? The purpose of …

A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju
A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder whereby the body loses its ability to maintain normal glucose levels. Despite of development of implantable glucose sensors in long periods, none of the biosensors are capable of continuously monitoring glucose levels during long-term implantation reliably. Progressive loss of sensor function occurs due in part to biofouling and to the consequences of a foreign body response such as inflammation, fibrosis, and loss of vasculature.
In order to improve the function and lifetime of implantable glucose sensors, a new 3D porous and bio-stable collagen scaffold has been developed to improve the biocompatibility of implantable glucose …
Freeway Exit Ramp Traffic Flow Research Based On Computer Simulation, Xu Wang
Freeway Exit Ramp Traffic Flow Research Based On Computer Simulation, Xu Wang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Interstate highways are one of the most important components of the transportation infrastructure in America. Freeway ramps play an important role in the whole interstate transportation system.
This paper researches the traffic flow characteristics of four typical exit ramps in USA, which are tapered one-lane exit, tapered two-lane exit, parallel one-lane exit and parallel two-lane exit. Computer simulation software, such as CORSIM and HCS are applied as the main tools in this research. ANOVA and Tukey are used for statistical purpose.
It compares the maximum capacity, average running speed and the total lane change number of those four exit ramps. …

Soil bacteria that also form mutualistic symbioses in plants encounter two major levels of selection. One occurs during adaptation to and survival in soil, and the other occurs in concert with host plant speciation and adaptation. Actinobacteria from the genus Frankia are facultative symbionts that form N2-fixing root nodules on diverse and globally distributed angiosperms in the “actinorhizal” symbioses. Three closely related clades of Frankia sp. strains are recognized; members of each clade infect a subset of plants from among eight angiosperm families. We sequenced the genomes from three strains; their sizes varied from 5.43 Mbp for a narrow host …
