Environmental Health Information Systems: More Than Just Gigabytes, Christopher R. Cook Sep 2007

Environmental Health Information Systems: More Than Just Gigabytes, Christopher R. Cook

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Environmental health professionals are concerned about bites. Animal bites, mosquito bites, and tick bites to name a few. But what about bytes of data? Environmental health information systems (EHIS) are often the "silent partners" in an environmental health (EH) department's daily protection of public health. By Webster's dictionary definition, a silent partner is a cohort that does not have the right to participate in an organization's management process. The purpose of this study was to encourage public health officials to make EHIS full partners in their EH departments. Through the use of five surveys, this study was designed to increase …

Distinct Mechanisms For Ctr1-Mediated Copper And Cisplatin Transport, Devis Sinani, David J. Adle, Heejeong Kim, Jaekwon Lee Sep 2007

Distinct Mechanisms For Ctr1-Mediated Copper And Cisplatin Transport, Devis Sinani, David J. Adle, Heejeong Kim, Jaekwon Lee

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The Ctr1 family of integral membrane proteins is necessary for high affinity copper uptake in eukaryotes. Ctr1 is also involved in cellular accumulation of cisplatin, a platinum-based anticancer drug. Although the physiological role of Ctr1 has been revealed, the mechanism of action of Ctr1 remains to be elucidated. To gain a better understanding of Ctr1-mediated copper and cisplatin transport, we have monitored molecular dynamics and transport activities of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae Ctr1 and its mutant alleles. Co-expression of functional Ctr1 monomers fused with either cyan or yellow fluorescent protein resulted in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), which is consistent with …

Prevention Over Cure: The Administrative Rationale For Education In The Responsible Conduct Of Research, Daniel R. Vasgird Sep 2007

Prevention Over Cure: The Administrative Rationale For Education In The Responsible Conduct Of Research, Daniel R. Vasgird

Research Compliance Services: Staff Publications

The value of responsible conduct of research (RCR) education from an administrative perspective can be summed up in the oft-used adage, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The National Academy of Sciences has underscored the importance of RCR education in three major reports relating public trust in research to the perception and reality of integrity within the field. Compliance and integrity cannot simply be hoped for. Rising numbers of reported cases of research misconduct support this view. This scenario calls for institutions to provide an environment where research integrity is a fundamental prerequisite. Supporting this notion …
