Parasitic nematodes that cause elephantiasis and river blindness threaten hundreds of millions of people in the developing world. We have sequenced the ∼90 megabase (Mb) genome of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi and predict ∼11,500 protein coding genes in 71 Mb of robustly assembled sequence. Comparative analysis with the free-living, model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans revealed that, despite these genes having maintained little conservation of local synteny during ∼350 million years of evolution, they largely remain in linkage on chromosomal units. More than 100 conserved operons were identified. Analysis of the predicted proteome provides evidence for adaptations of B. malayi …

Identification Of Natural Resources At Watershed Level: An Initial Step Of Mainstreaming Of The Federal Restructure In Nepal, Madan Koirala Sep 2007

Identification Of Natural Resources At Watershed Level: An Initial Step Of Mainstreaming Of The Federal Restructure In Nepal, Madan Koirala

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Federal restructuring of the nation state has become almost common agenda after April 2006 revolution in Nepal. Political parties, ethnic communities, development planners have started to move towards federal direction in their understandings. Expectation revolution of people is ahead of other issues such as institutional framework and working processes. Identification of extractable natural resources meant for the livelihood of local people becomes the basic requirement to meet these expectations. Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali three broad watershed level ecosystem-mapping especially forest ecosystem and agroecosystem reveal a basic inventory for the livelihood support of the people. Modernizing agriculture, followed by Non Timber …

Domestic Health Hazard And Indoor Air-Pollution: An Approach To Find Alternative Energy Source For Rural Bangladesh To Minimize The Threat, Reazul S.M. Ahsan, Jinia Afrin Sep 2007

Domestic Health Hazard And Indoor Air-Pollution: An Approach To Find Alternative Energy Source For Rural Bangladesh To Minimize The Threat, Reazul S.M. Ahsan, Jinia Afrin

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Indoor air pollution and health hazards for women and child especially in the developing countries have been overlooked for decades. It happened because there was no specific indoor pollution standard and alternative energy solution to minimize the indoor gaseous emissions at the domestic end-use level of energy. Traditional biomass fuel is one of the major sources of energy in the developing countries. About 2.4 billion people rely on traditional biomass, mainly for cooking and heating as they have limited access to better alternative energy sources like Natural Gas or Electricity. In Bangladesh per capita energy consumption is only 8.83 GJ …

Integrated Modeling Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Agriculture-Dominated Watersheds, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Sep 2007

Integrated Modeling Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Agriculture-Dominated Watersheds, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents and implements a framework for modeling the impact of land use practices and protection alternatives on nitrate pollution of groundwater in agricultural watersheds. The framework utilizes the national land cover database (NLCD) of the United State Geological Survey (USGS) grid and a geographic information system (GIS) to account for the spatial distribution of on-ground nitrogen sources and corresponding loadings. The framework employs a soil nitrogen dynamic model to estimate nitrate leaching to groundwater. These estimates were used in developing a groundwater nitrate fate and transport model. The framework considers both point and non-point sources of nitrogen across …

Soil Carbon And Tree Litter Dynamics In A Red Cedar–Scotch Pine Shelterbelt, Thomas J. Sauer, Cynthia A. Cambardella, James R. Brandle Sep 2007

Soil Carbon And Tree Litter Dynamics In A Red Cedar–Scotch Pine Shelterbelt, Thomas J. Sauer, Cynthia A. Cambardella, James R. Brandle

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Carbon sequestration in the woody biomass of shelterbelts has been investigated but there have been no measurements of the C stocks in soil and tree litter under this agroforestry practice. The objective of this study was to quantify C stored in surface soil layers and tree litter within and adjacent to a 35-year-old shelterbelt in eastern Nebraska, USA. The 2-row shelterbelt was composed of eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris). A sampling grid was established across a section of the shelterbelt on Tomek silt loam (fine, smectitic, mesic Pachic Argiudolls). Four soil …
