Remittances And Their Effects In Nepal: A Microeconomic Study, Mukti Upadhyay Oct 2007

Remittances And Their Effects In Nepal: A Microeconomic Study, Mukti Upadhyay

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Some of the important questions that have motivated my project, in the context of Nepal, include the following: “Do remittances facilitate consumption smoothing (Yang and Choi, 2005), or investments in human and physical capital (Rapoport and Docquier 2004), or help households overcome liquidity constraints (Taylor and Rozelee, 2003)?”

The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung District Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha Oct 2007

The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung District Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Among land-change scientists, there is a growing recognition of the need for an integrative multilevel approach to study the relationships of agricultural ‘modification activities’ with global land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) (Moran 2005; Walsh et al. 2004). This new development comes as a crucial step to move beyond the primary area of change – the conversion of forests – to study the changes in agricultural areas, mainly the land-use strategies resulting in different agricultural intensification levels (Lambin et al. 2000; Laney 2004).

The Jurisdiction Of Inherent Right Aboriginal Governments, Kent Mcneil Oct 2007

The Jurisdiction Of Inherent Right Aboriginal Governments, Kent Mcneil

All Papers

Since the recognition of Aboriginal and treaty rights in Canada by section 35(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982, the inherent right of the Aboriginal peoples to govern themselves has become a generally accepted aspect of Canadian constitutional law. But what is the scope of the governmental authority, or jurisdiction, that is exercisable by inherent right Aboriginal governments? And how does the jurisdiction of Aboriginal governments interact with the jurisdiction of other governments in Canada, especially the federal and provincial governments? This research paper will attempt to answer these questions in a general way, without attempting to determine or assess the …

Module 9: The Learning Cycle Oct 2007

Module 9: The Learning Cycle

Module 9: The Learning Cycle

It is quite clear in the research related to the work of Piaget that persons need many years of practice in meaningful understanding and manipulating relationships with the aid of concrete-empirical props. Gradually they develop greater facility in performing these operations and they are able to perform the same operations without relying upon props. In other words, "hands-on", "eyes-on" experiences are essential prerequisites for the development of advanced reasoning abilities.

On the basis of this developmental theory, classroom activities may play a central role in the improvement of student reasoning. Given the possible importance of classroom experiences , does it …

Jean-Baptiste Debret’S Return Of The Negro Hunters, The Brazilian Roça, And The Interstices Of Empire, Amy J. Buono Oct 2007

Jean-Baptiste Debret’S Return Of The Negro Hunters, The Brazilian Roça, And The Interstices Of Empire, Amy J. Buono

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Despite the range of subjects that Debret illustrates, historians of Brazil have usually only reproduced his images of Afro-Brazilian slaves. This is understandable, given the political, social and economic interest in the topic and the fact that Debret is one of the few artists who portrayed the horrors of slavery in Brazil at so early date.3 The keen interest in slavery as an historical topic has also led some scholars to assume that all Afro-Brazilians depicted in Debret's volumes are slaves, when many individuals may in fact have been free.4 While acknowledging the importance of examining Debret's images …
