Engineering, Nutrient Removal, And Feedstock Conversion Evaluations Of Four Corn Stover Harvest Scenarios, Reed L. Hoskinson, Douglas L. Karlen, Stuart J. Birrell, Corey W. Radtke, Wally Wilhelm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Crop residue has been identified as a near-term source of biomass for renewable fuel, heat, power, chemicals and other bio-materials. A prototype one-pass harvest system was used to collect residue samples from a corn (Zea mays L.) field near Ames, IA. Four harvest scenarios (low cut, high-cut top, high-cut bottom, and normal cut) were evaluated and are expressed as collected stover harvest indices (CSHI). High-cut top and high-cut bottom samples were obtained from the same plot in separate operations. Chemical composition, dilute acid pretreatment response, ethanol conversion yield and efficiency, and thermochemical conversion for each scenario were determined. Mean …

Conjuring Her Self: Hermione's Self-Determination In Harry Potter, Gwendolyn Limbach Oct 2007

Conjuring Her Self: Hermione's Self-Determination In Harry Potter, Gwendolyn Limbach

Honors College Theses

In most classic children’s literature, a female protagonist, though the center of the story, does not exhibit agency; rather, power “arrives in the form of rescue” and is acted upon her by a male hero (Sweeney). Recent feminist children’s literature, such as The Princess and the Admiral and The Ordinary Princess, empowers the protagonist to be her own rescuer. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series may not fit the expected mold of feminist children’s literature, but one of the main characters, Hermione Granger, is certainly the books’ only girl feminist. Hermione separates herself from other models of girlhood, such as the …

An Investigation Into The Interaction Of Various Salt Ions With Dna Topoisomerase Ia During The Relaxation Of Negatively-Supercoiled Dna., Eric Burdette Oct 2007

An Investigation Into The Interaction Of Various Salt Ions With Dna Topoisomerase Ia During The Relaxation Of Negatively-Supercoiled Dna., Eric Burdette

Honors College Theses

Topoisomerases are enzymes that change the topological state of DNA by catalyzing the cleavage, subsequent strand passage and religation of either one or both strands of DNA during DNA replication and transcription. This research thesis focused on Escherichia coli DNA topoisomerase IA, an enzyme largely responsible for the maintenance of supercoiling and the specific relaxation of negative supercoils in E. coli DNA. The various types of topoisomerases and their functions were discussed. As a basis for this paper, some of the structural properties not yet determined in topoisomerase IA were mentioned with respect to the catalytic mechanism. A description was …

Induction Of Insulin Secretion In Engineered Liver Cells By Nitric Oxide, Latha Muniappan, Sabire Özcan Oct 2007

Induction Of Insulin Secretion In Engineered Liver Cells By Nitric Oxide, Latha Muniappan, Sabire Özcan

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus results from an autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. The lack of insulin leads to chronic hyperglycemia and secondary complications, such as cardiovascular disease. The currently approved clinical treatments for diabetes mellitus often fail to achieve sustained and optimal glycemic control. Therefore, there is a great interest in the development of surrogate beta cells as a treatment for type 1 diabetes. Normally, pancreatic beta cells produce and secrete insulin only in response to increased blood glucose levels. However in many cases, insulin secretion from non-beta cells engineered to produce insulin occurs …

Toward Understanding The Human Dimensions Of The Rapidly Changing Arctic System: Insights And Approaches From Five Harc Projects, Henry P. Huntington, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Craig Nicolson, Ronald Brunner, Amanda Lynch, Astrid E. J. Oglivie, Alexey Voinov

Sociology

Human dimensions research focuses on the interrelationships between humans and the environment. To date, human dimensions research in arctic regions has concentrated primarily on local events and contexts. As such, it complements analysis elsewhere of adaptation and sustainable development within broad institutional, social, and environmental contexts. This paper reviews five projects from the Human Dimensions of the Arctic System (HARC) initiative, established by the US National Science Foundation in 1997. Common themes and findings are highlighted: climatic variations or change affect societies through interactions with human activities; population dynamics provide key quantitative indicators of social impacts and well being; and …

Camellia Sinensis Constituents: A Review Of Oral Cancer Prevention, Tatyana Krieger Oct 2007

Camellia Sinensis Constituents: A Review Of Oral Cancer Prevention, Tatyana Krieger

Honors College Theses

Historically, Camellia sinensis (tea) is a plant that has been known to contain antioxidants. Antioxidants such as catechins have been demonstrated to be chemopreventive agents. This review aims to summarize recent findings on the anticancer properties of tea, and its constituents. Since tea is taken orally, and one of the easiest entrances into the human body for microbes is through the oral cavity, this review will focus mainly on oral cancer.

Through animal and epidemiological studies, the main active ingredient responsible for the anticancer properties of tea has been determined to be the catechin (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Tea constituents were …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Every year, millions of vacationers escape their daily routines to find peace and relaxation in tropical locations that differ from the worlds they come from. Vacations are becoming more elaborate and the list of destinations is continually being enlarged as the availability of air travel reaches more and more places. Yet as commercialism enters these regions and investors begin cornering the market, the essence of these once exotic locations seems to get overlooked and in time, ultimately forgotten. Places that once consisted of straw huts and bamboo bungalows are now being confronted with crude, insensitive designs that neglect the landscape …

Evolutionary Dynamics Of Eukaryotic Selenoproteomes: Large Selenoproteomes May Associate With Aquatic Life And Small With Terrestrial Life, Alexey V. Lobanov, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Yan Zhang, Aniruddha Sengupta, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Background: Selenocysteine (Sec) is a selenium-containing amino acid that is co-translationally inserted into nascent polypeptides by recoding UGA codons. Selenoproteins occur in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, but the selenoprotein content of organisms (selenoproteome) is highly variable and some organisms do not utilize Sec at all.

Results: We analyzed the selenoproteomes of several model eukaryotes and detected 26 and 29 selenoprotein genes in the green algae Ostreococcus tauri and Ostreococcus lucimarinus, respectively, five in the social amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum, three in the fly Drosophila pseudoobscura, and 16 in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, including several new selenoproteins. Distinct selenoprotein …

Publications and Research

Neuroanatomy can be a challenging topic for undergraduates, making the development of new methods of instruction an important goal of neuroscience educators. In the present report we describe the utility and versatility of the Allen Brain Atlas as a novel tool for instruction of several important anatomical principles of the mammalian central nervous system. Using this digital database, we detail how instructors of laboratory or lecture-based courses can demonstrate cytoarchitecture, cellular diversity, and gene expression profiles of the brain.
