Why Do High School Seniors Drink? Implications For A Targeted Approach To Intervention, Donna L. Coffman, Megan E. Patrick, Lori Ann Palen, Brittany L. Rhoades, Alison K. Ventura Oct 2007

Why Do High School Seniors Drink? Implications For A Targeted Approach To Intervention, Donna L. Coffman, Megan E. Patrick, Lori Ann Palen, Brittany L. Rhoades, Alison K. Ventura

Kinesiology and Public Health

The transition from high school to college provides a potentially critical window to intervene and reduce risky behavior among adolescents. Understanding the motivations (e.g., social, coping, enhancement) behind high school seniors’ alcohol use could provide one important avenue to reducing risky drinking behaviors. In the present study, latent class analysis was used to examine the relationship between different patterns of drinking motivations and behaviors in a sample of 12th graders (N = 1,877) from the 2004 Monitoring the Future survey. Unlike previous variable-centered analyses, this person-centered approach identifies types of motivations that cluster together within individuals and relates membership …

Malaria, Labor Supply, And Schooling In Sub-Saharan Africa, Taiwo Abimbola Oct 2007

Malaria, Labor Supply, And Schooling In Sub-Saharan Africa, Taiwo Abimbola

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the causal effects of malaria and poor health in general on economic outcome in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study uses panel data from the Living Standard Measurement Survey (LSMS) for Tanzania from 1991 to 2004. Three main hypotheses are tested. First, the study evaluates the effect of malaria and other chronic illnesses on labor supply using the number of hours worked per week as a measure of outcome. Second, it determines the impact of poor health on human capital accumulation by measuring the number of weekly school hours lost to illness. The third …

Rodriguez, Felix, Bronx African American History Project Oct 2007

Rodriguez, Felix, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Felix Rodriguez (b. 7/9/1967) is a New York-born filmmaker. Both his parents are Puerto Rican. Rodriguez was born in East Harlem and was raised for the first 10 years of his life in Queens. At this time, his parents moved back to Puerto Rico, where Felix attended junior high and high school. Because his first language was English, Rodriguez had to pick up Spanish in Puerto Rico. His primary occupation in Puerto Rico was as an attendant for his father’s livestock, a job that he hated. Puerto Rico was constantly being inundated with American popular culture, and soon enough Felix …

Applying Bayesian Ordinal Regression To Icap Maladaptive Behavior Subscales, Edward P. Johnson Oct 2007

Applying Bayesian Ordinal Regression To Icap Maladaptive Behavior Subscales, Edward P. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This paper develops a Bayesian ordinal regression model for the maladaptive subscales of the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP). Because the maladaptive behavior section of the ICAP contains ordinal data, current analysis strategies combine all the subscales into three indices, making the data more interval in nature. Regular MANOVA tools are subsequently used to create a regression model for these indices. This paper uses ordinal regression to analyze each original scale separately. The sample consists of applicants for aid from Utah's Division of Services for Persons with Disabilities. Each applicant fills out the Scales of Independent Behavior"”Revised (SIB-R) …

Personal Integrity And The Conflict Between Ordinary And Institutional Values, W. Bradley Wendel Oct 2007

Personal Integrity And The Conflict Between Ordinary And Institutional Values, W. Bradley Wendel

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Values, which give us reasons for acting in certain ways, may be properties of both natural, pre-institutional states of affairs and relations among persons, as well as states of affairs and relations among persons that are constituted and regulated by social and political institutions. We can call these ordinary moral values and institutional values, respectively. The fundamental issue in legal ethics is often represented as a conflict between ordinary moral values and institutional values. However, another conflict which has not been well explored in the legal ethics literature is between agent-neutral institutional values and agent-relative reasons that arise from the …
