"Stranger Than Fiction": Taxing Virtual Worlds, Leandra Lederman

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Virtual worlds, including massive multi-player on-line role-playing games (game worlds), such as City of Heroes, Everquest, and World of Warcraft, have become popular sources of entertainment. Game worlds provide scripted contexts for events such as quests. Other virtual worlds, such as Second Life, are unstructured virtual environments that lack specific goals but allow participants to socialize and engage virtually in such activities as shopping or attending a concert. Many of these worlds have become commodified, with millions of dollars of real-world trade in virtual items taking place every year. Most game worlds prohibit these real market transactions, but some worlds …

The Effects Of The Herbicide Atrazine On Mammalian Immune Function., Alexander M. Rowe Jan 2007

The Effects Of The Herbicide Atrazine On Mammalian Immune Function., Alexander M. Rowe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Atrazine is the most heavily used herbicide in the United States by weight and human exposure to the compound is wide spread. This study sought to define the immunotoxic effects of atrazine for two types of atrazine exposure models; maternal exposure to atrazine over a period of weeks and acute exposure of adult immune cells to atrazine. We hypothesized that maternal atrazine exposure from day ten of pregnancy to day ten of lactation would result in significant changes to the adult immune system. At three months of age we observed a gender specific increase in the offsprings’ immune function. Male …

The Effect Of Aerobic Exercise On Endothelial Dysfunction In Overweight Children., Emily C-S Murphy Jan 2007

The Effect Of Aerobic Exercise On Endothelial Dysfunction In Overweight Children., Emily C-S Murphy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Childhood obesity is an edpidemic in the United States, and is directly associated with risk factors for both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Endothelial dysfunction (EDF) is thought to be an initiating factor in both these diseases, and recent studies have established the presence of EDF in obese children. While the prevalence of EDF amongst obese children is unknown, EDF in the first two decades of life is predicted to increase both morbidity and mortality from CVD and type 2 diabetes. Purposes. (1) To determine the prevalence of EDF in obese children; (2) To determine whether aerobic exercise …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Nuclear Factor-Erythroid-2 Related Factor 2 (Nrf2) Regulation: Phosphorylation By Casein Kinase 2 (Ck2) And Interaction With Proto-Oncogene N-Myc In Neuroblastoma Cells., Patrick L. Apopa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Environmental pollutants and toxicants expose cells to oxidative and electrophilic challenges. Oxidative and xenobiotic stresses caused by environmental toxicants are known to cause human diseases including cancer and diabetes. To protect against the insults, cells have developed detection and response mechanisms. One such sensor-defense cellular mechanism involves the Nrf2 pathway. The transcription factor Nuclear factor erythriod 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), a member of the cnc bZIP transcription factors, regulates the expression and induction of phase II antioxidant and detoxification genes via antioxidant response element (ARE). In the presence of an antioxidant, Nrf2 has been shown to be activated, translocate …

Determining Consumer Perceptions Of And Willingness To Pay For Appalachian Grass -Fed Beef: An Experimental Economics Approach., Jason R. Evans Jan 2007

Determining Consumer Perceptions Of And Willingness To Pay For Appalachian Grass -Fed Beef: An Experimental Economics Approach., Jason R. Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The U.S. market for commoditized beef is a dynamic one that has, over the last 30 years, seen decreases in per capita consumption and an increased reliance on large, integrated feedlot facilities that focus on efficient weight gain and producing carcasses deemed desirable according the USDA quality grading system. Because of the problems inherent in the conventional production system and the existence of farm-to-retail price spreads that do not favor primary cow-calf producers, analyses of alternative beef production and marketing strategies that facilitate enhanced profitability and simultaneously address surging consumer demand for specialty food products are necessary. To that end, …

Developing And Evaluating A Gis-Supported Immersive Visualizaton System For Soil Resource Mapping., Paddington Hodza Jan 2007

Developing And Evaluating A Gis-Supported Immersive Visualizaton System For Soil Resource Mapping., Paddington Hodza

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines the coupling of GIS and immersive visualization (IV). This study was premised on the hypothesis that linking IV and GIS could potentially enhance a user’s visual-cognitive capacity to perceive, analyze, and understand complex geospatial data. A loosely-coupled GIS-IV system was developed and subsequently tested by professional soil scientists in soil boundary mapping and soil map update case studies. Soil boundary mapping is essentially a visualization enterprise involving the creation of cognitive models representing the relationship between soil and observable environmental features. A GIS-IV conceptual model was formulated, and an operational system was designed and implemented. The GIS-IV …

The Endogenous Cannabinoid Anandamide Inhibits Cromakalim-Activated K+ Currents In Follicle-Enclosed Xenopus Oocytes, Murat Oz, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Meral Dinc, Toni S. Shippenberg

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The effect of the endogenous cannabinoid anandamide on K+ currents activated by the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel opener cromakalim was investigated in follicle-enclosed Xenopus oocytes using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique. Anandamide (1–90 μM) reversibly inhibited cromakalim-induced K+ currents, with an IC50 value of 8.1 ± 2 μM. Inhibition was noncompetitive and independent of membrane potential. Coapplication of anandamide with the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor antagonist N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboximide hydrochloride (SR 141716A) (1 μM), the CB2 receptor antagonist N-[(1S)endo-1,3,3-trimethyl bicyclo heptan-2-yl]-5-(4-chloro-3-methylphenyl)-1-(4-methylbenzyl)-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (SR144528) (1 μM), or pertussis toxin (5 μg/ml) did not alter the inhibitory effect of anandamide, suggesting that known cannabinoid receptors …

Gender Inequalities In Toddler Confrontation Teachers' Responses, Jessica Hermeyer Jan 2007

Gender Inequalities In Toddler Confrontation Teachers' Responses, Jessica Hermeyer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research examined the differences in confrontational interaction between boy and girl toddlers, and differences in how caregivers react to the children involved based on the children's gender. It is important to examine these differences in order to understand how gender differences are reproduced as children are socialized in day care culture.

Using content analysis of teacher-reported incidents occurring in a day care center, I explore the details of toddler confrontational behaviors from the teachers' perspectives following the incidents. My findings indicate that during confrontational interaction the children's gendered behavior in this study was similar to adults' gendered behavior revealing …

Secrecy And Access In An Innovation Intensive Economy: Reordering Information Privileges In Environmental, Health, And Safety Law, Mary L. Lyndon Jan 2007

Secrecy And Access In An Innovation Intensive Economy: Reordering Information Privileges In Environmental, Health, And Safety Law, Mary L. Lyndon

University of Colorado Law Review

This article examines the law concerned with access to information that is commercially valuable when it is kept secret but is also essential to environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risk evaluation. EHS law stimulates sustainable economic activity, including new technologies, and thus complements intellectual property law. Access to EHS information is essential to risk management, but current disclosure obligations are unclear, as the law is a patchwork of familiar but ill-fitting concepts and entitlements. The article discusses the current law that affects disclosure, taking into account recent changes in the technological and economic landscape. It also describes the contrasting uses …

E-Mail To Rebecca, Dale D. Goble Jan 2007

E-Mail To Rebecca, Dale D. Goble

University of Colorado Law Review

H.L.A. Hart is probably the most important legal theorist in the modern English-speaking world. The intriguing subtitle of Nicola Lacey's intimate biography, "The Nightmare and the Noble Dream, " echoes the name of Hart's 1997 Georgia Law Review paper, in which he identifies two warring, equally inadequate, visions of law in American jurisprudence: the "nightmare" of complete indeterminacy and unbridled judicial discretion and the "noble dream " of a closed, deterministic legal system of judicial restraint. Lacey implies that Hart's life itself was both a nightmare and a noble dream. This book review expands on Lacey's work and suggests how …

Local Decisions, National Impact: Why The Public School Textbook Selection Process Should Be Viewpoint Neutral, Rebecca Tanglen Jan 2007

Local Decisions, National Impact: Why The Public School Textbook Selection Process Should Be Viewpoint Neutral, Rebecca Tanglen

University of Colorado Law Review

In its decision in Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, the Supreme Court determined that in the public school context, government restriction on speech must be related to "legitimate pedagogical concerns." However, the question remains open whether that standard requires such restrictions to be viewpoint neutral; the circuit courts are split on this question. This Comment explores the issue in the context of the public school textbook selection process, concluding that the process should be viewpoint neutral. As an initial matter, it argues that the selection of textbooks for use in the public schools should be analyzed under the public forum …

Representation And The Spatial Bias Of Direct Democracy, Daniel A. Smith Jan 2007

Representation And The Spatial Bias Of Direct Democracy, Daniel A. Smith

University of Colorado Law Review

Daniel Smith analyzes whether direct democracy favors urban and suburban voters' interests at the expense of rural voters' interests. After reviewing existing academic literature on the (sub)urban rural divide in direct democracy contests, the author performs an empirical analysis of county-level voting data on numerous recent Colorado ballot initiatives. The author concludes that there is a significant regional bias concerning popular votes on ballot initiatives, and that rural communities of interest will likely continue to be tyrannized by (sub)urban majorities in statewide ballot contests

Climate Change And The Poorest Nations: Further Reflections On Global Inequality, Ruth Gordon Jan 2007

Climate Change And The Poorest Nations: Further Reflections On Global Inequality, Ruth Gordon

University of Colorado Law Review

This article considers climate change from the perspective of the Third World and more particularly from the vantage point of the poorest nations in the international system. It concludes that those nations that are the most geographically and economically vulnerable will also have the least impact on mechanisms to halt the progress of this impending disaster. Hence, climate change is examined as yet another chapter in Third World powerlessness. Despite the fact that low-income nations participate in international deliberations, they do so from an exceedingly weak position that puts them in the untenable position of being on the receiving end …

Indigenous People And Environmental Justice: The Impact Of Climate Change, Rebecca Tsosie Jan 2007

Indigenous People And Environmental Justice: The Impact Of Climate Change, Rebecca Tsosie

University of Colorado Law Review

The international dialogue on climate change is currently focused on a strategy of adaptation that includes the projected removal of entire communities, if necessary. Not surprisingly, many of the geographical regions that are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change are also the traditional lands of indigenous communities. This article takes the position that the adaptation strategy will prove genocidal for many groups of indigenous people, and instead argues for recognition of an indigenous right to environmental selfdetermination, which would allow indigenous peoples to maintain their cultural and political status upon their traditional lands. In the context of climate …

Mammals And Amphibians Of Southeast Alaska, S.O. Macdonald, Joseph A. Cook Jan 2007

Mammals And Amphibians Of Southeast Alaska, S.O. Macdonald, Joseph A. Cook

Special Publications

This report continues the process of documenting the 82 species of mammals and 8 amphibians known to occur, or have recently occurred, In Southeast Alaska. Species accounts are based on a review of the literature, examination of specl mens and associated field notes at natural history museums, and a series of expeditions we conducted through 1999 through the University of Alaska Museum of the North. Our primary conclusion from this survey is that information as basic as distribution and taxonomic status is unavailable for most species of mammals and amphibians. Most species are poorly documented with 53% of mammals represented …

Recent Observations Of The Distribution Of Woodchucks (Marmota Monax) In Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, D. Blake Sasse, Todd Pennington, Nicole Freeman Jan 2007

Recent Observations Of The Distribution Of Woodchucks (Marmota Monax) In Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, D. Blake Sasse, Todd Pennington, Nicole Freeman

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

During the last couple of decades, the distribution of the woodchuck (Marmota monax) appeared to be expanding southward in Arkansas (Tumlison et al. 2001). An increase in the frequency of new sightings led us to re-evaluate the present status of this species of squirrel in the state. The woodchuck is not easily confused with other mammals, therefore we sought records of sightings to update information about its distribution. Recent range expansion had been documented in southwestern Arkansas, so we placed notices in stores and advertised in local newspapers in that region to intensively seek new records of sightings from the …

Surveillance De L'Asthme Professionnel Chez Des Travailleurs Dans Des Secteurs À Risque, Denyse Gautrin, Jean-Luc Malo, Claire Infante-Rivard, Heberto Ghezzo Jan 2007

Surveillance De L'Asthme Professionnel Chez Des Travailleurs Dans Des Secteurs À Risque, Denyse Gautrin, Jean-Luc Malo, Claire Infante-Rivard, Heberto Ghezzo

Sonic Boom Focusing Prediction And Delta Wing Shape Optimization For Boom Mitigation Studies, Nitin Khasdeo Jan 2007

Sonic Boom Focusing Prediction And Delta Wing Shape Optimization For Boom Mitigation Studies, Nitin Khasdeo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Supersonic travel over land would be a reality if new aircraft are designed such that they produce quieter ground sonic booms, no louder than 0.3 psf according to the FAA requirement. An attempt is made to address the challenging goal of predicting the sonic boom focusing effects and mitigate the sonic boom ground over pressure for delta wing geometry.

Sonic boom focusing is fundamentally a nonlinear phenomenon and can be predicted by numerically solving the nonlinear Tricomi equation. The conservative time domain scheme is developed to carry out the sonic boom focusing or super boom studies. The computational scheme is …

Réduction De L'Émission De Formaldéhyde : Modification De La Formulation Du Liant Dans Les Usines De Panneaux De Particules, Abdelkader Chaala Jan 2007

Réduction De L'Émission De Formaldéhyde : Modification De La Formulation Du Liant Dans Les Usines De Panneaux De Particules, Abdelkader Chaala
