What Is Theatre's Role As A Worship Tool In A Messianic Synagogue?, Jennifer Pedraza Jan 2007

What Is Theatre's Role As A Worship Tool In A Messianic Synagogue?, Jennifer Pedraza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I worked with an ensemble of teenagers from Ayts Chayim Messianic Synagogue in Boca Raton, Florida to develop an original Purim play to be presented for the congregation and the public. I specifically explored "What is theatre's role as a worship tool in a Messianic Jewish Synagogue?" My ultimate goal in this process was to honor God through the creative arts, and I used the process of creating the play to discover the specific ways that theatre can be used as a worship tool, from script development to theatrical presentation. I hypothesized that theatre could be used …

Food For Joyous Laughter: Contemporary Productions Of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates Of Penzance, Julia Winstead Jan 2007

Food For Joyous Laughter: Contemporary Productions Of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates Of Penzance, Julia Winstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, is a classic work by Gilbert and Sullivan, a work that continues to be produced frequently despite its Victorian setting and operatic style. For many years the standard performance style of all the operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan was upheld by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, who attempted to perform the operettas as they had originally been done. Though the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company helped stimulate interest in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, nontraditional productions of G & S operettas produced outside of the company were able to reach larger audiences. When The …

Let The Children Come To Me, Andrea Ramirez Jan 2007

Let The Children Come To Me, Andrea Ramirez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis, a collection of personal essays, explores my parents' affinity towards their native Colombia and how this connection to their homeland, through their faith and their customs, affected my definition of self. When I think about my parents' emigration from Colombia to the States, I picture the illustrations in the Bible I had as a child: the couple running from Sodom and Gomorra, running away from the place they had always known and holding on to each other. My parents, like the couple in the Bible, were in the middle of nowhere when they first set foot on the …

Net Generation Researchers: An Inquiry Into Hypertext Reading And Research Strategies Of First-Year Composition Students, Susan Wilensky Thompson Jan 2007

Net Generation Researchers: An Inquiry Into Hypertext Reading And Research Strategies Of First-Year Composition Students, Susan Wilensky Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hypertext and hyperlinks are present on almost every web site or electronic document. As integral components of visual rhetoric, they are foundational to any discussion of technology and literacy. This inquiry is designed to explore first-year composition students' advances in technological literacy, specifically hypertext reading and research strategies. To accomplish this, a hypertext-reading project was designed to investigate the ways in which first-year composition students assimilate and employ hypertext information as a source from which they must extract information to use in the development of an argument. A program, designed and written specifically for this project, presented research participants, 76 …

Tree Calls Of Three Treefrogs (Hyla Femoralis, H. Gratiosa, And H. Squirella): Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Acoustic Characteristics, Kristine Schad Jan 2007

Tree Calls Of Three Treefrogs (Hyla Femoralis, H. Gratiosa, And H. Squirella): Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Acoustic Characteristics, Kristine Schad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Male frogs typically call near water at dusk to attract females for breeding. During the breeding season, male treefrogs also emit diurnal "tree calls" or "rain calls" from the tops of trees. Very little is known about tree calls, although many treefrogs use them. Tree calls may be used to attract females, deter males or be triggered by weather conditions favorable for breeding: high temperature and relative humidity, and a drop in barometric pressure. As dusk approaches, male treefrogs continue tree calls from lower in the trees, and if conditions are favorable, jump to the ground and travel to a …

Domestic Anticommunism In Alabama And The Resurgence Of American Conservatism, Jordan R. Bauer Jan 2007

Domestic Anticommunism In Alabama And The Resurgence Of American Conservatism, Jordan R. Bauer

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis examines the pervasive anticommunist movement in Cold War Alabama. It considers the ways in which many white conservative Alabamians used anticommunism to resist the dramatic social and political changes of the 1960s and 1970s. During this time, Alabama’s anticommunist campaign focused on seeking out “subversives” in public schools. Another main target of the state’s anticommunist network was the black civil rights movement. As the struggle for racial equality gained momentum, many white Alabamians responded by labeling civil rights activists as communists. The thesis argues that Alabama’s anticommunist movement was directed against radicals in academia, secularism, the federal government, …

Models Of Disparity Gradient Estimation In The Visual Cortex, Alexander Zotov Jan 2007

Models Of Disparity Gradient Estimation In The Visual Cortex, Alexander Zotov

All ETDs from UAB

The binocular disparity of an object slanted in depth from the frontoparallel plane is not constant and changes with coordinate. Objects oriented in such way have non-zero disparity gradient. The processes that take place in the brain to recover disparity gradient and to create the correct perception of slant in depth are not well understood. Changes in local disparity are an obvious disparity gradient cue. Here, we consider an alternative means of disparity gradient detection exploiting the differential projection of oriented edges to each eye. Two retinal images of an object slanted in depth differ by the amount of horizontal …

Nation Building And The Politics Of Islamic Internationalism In Guinea: Toward An Understanding Of Muslims’ Experience Of Globalization In Africa, Mohamed S. Camara Jan 2007

Nation Building And The Politics Of Islamic Internationalism In Guinea: Toward An Understanding Of Muslims’ Experience Of Globalization In Africa, Mohamed S. Camara

Humanities & Communication - Daytona Beach

This article discusses the historical role of Islam in the political evolution of Guinea in the broader context of Muslims’ experience of nation/state building and globalization in Africa. This role is examined on the premise that Islam is one of the major globalizing forces (more in the body of the paper on this idea of Islam as a globalizing force) responsible for the formation of what experts have conceptualized as Africa’s “triple heritage” or the juncture of African traditional values, Islamic influence, and the legacy of Western colonialism. The article examines Islam’s role in the creation of cultural identities, territorial …

The Role Of The Macrophage In Asbestos Induced Autoantibody Production, David J. Blake Jan 2007

The Role Of The Macrophage In Asbestos Induced Autoantibody Production, David J. Blake

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Environmental exposure to silicate compounds such as silica and asbestos has been associated with increased autoimmune responses and the development of autoimmune disease in humans. Residents of Libby, MT have experienced significant asbestos exposure due to an asbestos contaminated vermiculite mine near the community over several decades. Residents have developed numerous asbestos-related diseases as well as increased autoimmune responses. However, the exact mechanism by which Libby amphibole asbestos generates autoimmune responses is unclear. To elucidate a possible mechanism for asbestos induced autoimmunity, the cellular effects of Libby amphibole asbestos were characterized in vitro using a phagocytic murine macrophage cell line, …

Alternative Exon Usage Selectively Determines Both Tissue Distribution And Subcellular Localization Of The Acyl-Coa Thioesterase 7 Gene Products., Mary Hunt, Sinead Greene, Kjell Hultenby, L. Thomas Svensson, Susanna Engberg, Stefan E H Alexson Jan 2007

Alternative Exon Usage Selectively Determines Both Tissue Distribution And Subcellular Localization Of The Acyl-Coa Thioesterase 7 Gene Products., Mary Hunt, Sinead Greene, Kjell Hultenby, L. Thomas Svensson, Susanna Engberg, Stefan E H Alexson

Articles

Acyl-CoA thioesterases (ACOTs) catalyze the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to free fatty acids and coenzyme A. Recent studies have demonstrated that one gene named Acot7, reported to be mainly expressed in brain and testis, is transcribed in several different isoforms by alternative usage of first exons. Strongly decreased levels of ACOT7 activity and protein in both mitochondria and cytosol was reported in patients diagnosed with fatty acid oxidation defects, linking ACOT7 function to regulation of fatty acid oxidation in other tissues. In this study, we have identified five possible first exons in mouse Acot7 (Acot7a-e) and show that all five first …

Mickey, Can You Spare A Dime? Disneywar, Executive Compensation, Corporate Governance, And Business Law Pedagogy, Kenneth M. Rosen Jan 2007

Mickey, Can You Spare A Dime? Disneywar, Executive Compensation, Corporate Governance, And Business Law Pedagogy, Kenneth M. Rosen

Michigan Law Review

American business executives are under fire. Recent, notorious difficulties at companies such as the Enron Corporation brought attention to these individuals. Notwithstanding the conclusion of the trials of some of those top executives, skepticism remains about the inner workings of U.S. corporations and the quality of corporate governance. Drawing special scrutiny from some quarters is the compensation granted to corporate officers and directors. For instance, the timing of certain stock option grants, a key component of some compensation packages, raised ire because of those options' supposed backdating and fortuitous proximity to increases in share prices. Further, some questioned more generally …

Interview With James Boyd White, James Boyd White Jan 2007

Interview With James Boyd White, James Boyd White

Michigan Law Review

The occasion of the following interview was the Montesquieu Lecture at the University of Tilburg, which Professor James Boyd White delivered in February 2006. In the lecture, entitled "When Language Meets the Mind," Professor White discussed the manner of interpreting and criticizing texts, both in the law and in other fields, that he has worked out over his career. The heart of this method, as described in the lecture, is to direct attention to three sets of questions: - What is the language in which this text is written, and the culture of which it is a part? How are …

A Business Ethics Perspective On Sarbanes-Oxley And The Organizational Sentencing Guidelines, David Hess Jan 2007

A Business Ethics Perspective On Sarbanes-Oxley And The Organizational Sentencing Guidelines, David Hess

Michigan Law Review

This Article assesses the ability of Sarbanes-Oxley and other recent changes in the law and stock exchange listing requirements to reduce the incidence of fraud and to increase the reporting of financial misconduct. It begins by examining the individual decision-makers within a corporation and analyzing their intentions and behaviors under the Theory of Planned Behavior. It then examines the ability of the organization to influence the employees' intentions and behaviors through codes of ethics and compliance programs, and finds growing support for the usefulness of integrity based compliance programs. Finally, the Article considers how the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation and Organizational Sentencing …

Geography And International Law: Towards A Postcolonial Mapping, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 2007

Geography And International Law: Towards A Postcolonial Mapping, Tayyab Mahmud

Faculty Articles

Postcolonial theory aims at a critical interrogation of legitimizing knowledge claims put forward by proponents of the resurgent Empire. This article undertakes such an interrogation at the intersection of geography and international law. It aims to demonstrate that both modern geography and modern international law were constituted in, by, and through imperatives of Empire and unavoidably bear traces of their formative origin. The aim is to theorize the spatiality of global relations of domination and resistance under the shadow of international law. The article first identifies the vantage point of this critical engagement, namely postcolonial approach to inquiry. It then …

Fishery Conservation And Management Act Reauthorization: “A” For Effort, “C” For Substance, Madeline Kass Jan 2007

Fishery Conservation And Management Act Reauthorization: “A” For Effort, “C” For Substance, Madeline Kass

Faculty Articles

In one of its last acts of 2006, the 109th Congress passed the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006 (FCMRA), reauthorizing the nation's primary fishing law through the year 2013. The president signed on in early January 2007. Those involved in the reauthorization effort deserve kudos for achieving a successful bipartisan compromise, a relatively rare phenomenon in recent years. Congress also deserves praise for taking positive action towards improving existing law and for rejecting preliminary proposals designed principally to derail conservation efforts. Yet, in the face of unrelenting, catastrophic fish stock declines, it is unclear whether the …

Slouching Towards Development In International Intellectual Property, Margaret Chon, Denis Borges Barbosa, Andrés Moncayo Von Hase Jan 2007

Slouching Towards Development In International Intellectual Property, Margaret Chon, Denis Borges Barbosa, Andrés Moncayo Von Hase

Faculty Articles

An understanding of intellectual property's classic innovation mandate as only one of many cross-cutting development goals should be well-accepted by now within international intellectual property law and policy, given the pervasiveness of development rhetoric at the WTO, WIPO and other regional and bilateral fora. Yet development "walk" lags behind development "talk" on both international and domestic levels. This article focuses on how intellectual property can promote development, not only through innovation, but also by the promotion of broad-based human development implicitly underpinning global knowledge economies. First, we consider the rapidly evolving relationship of development and trade to intellectual property, and …

Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni Jan 2007

Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Porcine buccal mucosa has been extensively used as in vitro model to study the permeability of drugs and assess their potential to deliver through buccal route. Porcine buccal mucosa is found to be very similar to human oral mucosa in structure and function. However, the in vitro permeation studies across porcine buccal mucosa show high variability which is mostly due to the various experimental and biological variables that are often overlooked while conducting such studies.

The precise nature of the permeability barrier offered by the various tissue layers of buccal mucosa was investigated in this study. It was observed that …

Comic : An Exploration Into Computer-Mediated Intercultural Communication, Simone Alder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how cultural differences manifest themselves in computermediated intercultural communication (CoMIC). This study particularly looks at the role and use of digital nonverbals (DNVs) and their regulatory functions. The data analyzed is from a global virtual team working together for a period of three months. The grounded theory method has been employed to code the electronic transcript of the team's communication. Furthermore, the participants were surveyed regarding their personal backgrounds, their work, and their perception of the communication processes that took place. The study shows that in an intercultural communication process DNVs are used to avoid intercultural misunderstandings …

Ethiopia's Sovereign Right Of Access To The Sea Under International Law, Abebe T. Kahsay Jan 2007

Ethiopia's Sovereign Right Of Access To The Sea Under International Law, Abebe T. Kahsay

LLM Theses and Essays

Since Eritrea’s secession from Ethiopia there has been continuous opposition by intellectuals and the opposition to the government’s policy of making Ethiopia a landlocked country. Some totally reject the secession, while others accept the independence as a "fait accompli" and voice concern over the lack of an outlet to the sea, and still others acknowledge the right of self-determination and secession of Eritrea but denounce the inconsistency of the application of the Transitional Charter regarding the Red Sea Afar and the Algiers Agreement for denying Ethiopia its legitimate right to access to the sea and allege that the government is …

Discovering Software Reliability Patterns Based On Multiple Software Projects, Yi Liu, Gerald Adkins, Jeng-Foung Yao, Gita Williams Jan 2007

Discovering Software Reliability Patterns Based On Multiple Software Projects, Yi Liu, Gerald Adkins, Jeng-Foung Yao, Gita Williams

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Discovering patterns that indicate software reliability provides valuable information to software project managers. Software Quality Classification (SQC) modeling is a methodology that can be used to discover reliability patterns of large software projects. However, the patterns found by SQC modeling may not be accurate and robust owing to insufficient information used in the training process. This study compares two genetic programming-based SQC models using different volumes of data. These data were extracted from seven different NASA software projects. The results demonstrate that combining data from different projects can produce more accurate and reliable patterns.

Global Climate Change And The Risks To Coastal Areas From Hurricanes And Rising Sea Levels: The Costs Of Doing Nothing, Robert L. Glicksman Jan 2007

Global Climate Change And The Risks To Coastal Areas From Hurricanes And Rising Sea Levels: The Costs Of Doing Nothing, Robert L. Glicksman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, attention has focused on a pair of threats to low-lying coastal areas. Scientists have begun a debate over the possible impact of global climate change on hurricane intensity. Some scientists take the position that recent increases in hurricane intensity in the North Atlantic are due, at least in part, to increases in sea surface temperatures caused by human-induced global climate change. Others believe that those increases are largely due to natural fluctuations in weather patterns such as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. There is little debate over a second threat to coastal areas. The broad …

The Comparative Effectiveness Of Government Interventions On Environmental Performance In The Chemical Industry, Robert L. Glicksman, Dietrich Earnhart Jan 2007

The Comparative Effectiveness Of Government Interventions On Environmental Performance In The Chemical Industry, Robert L. Glicksman, Dietrich Earnhart

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Effective enforcement is crucial to achieving the objectives of the federal environmental statutes. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized the importance of effective enforcement, calling it a critical aspect of environmental governance and committing itself to the maintenance of a "credible deterrent" to regulatory violations. Despite the central role of enforcement to achievement of environmental statutory goals, relatively little is known about why regulated entities either do or do not comply. In particular, empirical studies of environmental enforcement are not plentiful, in part because comprehensive data on compliance and enforcement have been difficult to obtain. Although EPA and …

Ensuring A 'Yes-Pets' Rule, Joan Schaffner Jan 2007

Ensuring A 'Yes-Pets' Rule, Joan Schaffner

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

For many people, their companion animal is their "life-line." Almost 65% of all US households have a companion animal. Moreover, it is well-documented that living with a companion animal is therapeutic. Unfortunately, obtaining housing that allows companion animals can be very difficult. It is common for rental leases to prohibit companion animals. Moreover, many mobile home parks, cooperatives, condominiums and homeowners associations are banning companion animals, leaving fewer and fewer opportunities for people to benefit from the love of a companion animal. Last but not least, many homeless animals are needlessly destroyed because no-pet rules eliminate options for placing them. …

Trade And The Environment In The Wto, Steve Charnovitz Jan 2007

Trade And The Environment In The Wto, Steve Charnovitz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The linkage between trade and the environment stands out as an important challenge in global economic governance. Over the past decade, the WTO devoted considerable attention to this issue and included it on the agenda of the Doha Round. In parallel, the jurisprudence on trade and the environment has experienced significant advances. This study provides an overview of the main institutional changes at the WTO and of the developments in the jurisprudence most relevant to the interaction between the environment and trade. Specifically, this study focuses on GATT Article XX and takes note of many positive (and a few negative) …

It indicates another interrelationship, pointing out the influence national law has on …

Gardening Programs In Schools: A Proposed Solution To Reverse The Consequences Of The Current American Food Culture, Charlotte Grace Blessey Jan 2007

Gardening Programs In Schools: A Proposed Solution To Reverse The Consequences Of The Current American Food Culture, Charlotte Grace Blessey

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the problems with current food consumption and production practices, and proposes the implementation of school gardening programs as a possible remedy to these problems. Methods and procedures consisted of research on current publications, periodicals, internet sources and scholarly articles concerning these topics. It was found that current diet is a significant factor in widespread health problems facing populations today. This diet is intertwined with an environmentally destructive and vulnerable system of intensive industrial agriculture based on centralization, mass distribution, and standardization. School garden programs target children beginning at a young age and help to counter the culture …
