Identifying Common Traits Of Successful Casino Executives: Toward Succession Planning, Finley Bolton-Cotrone

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study is an attempt to identify traits and skills that determine success in casino executives. Upon identification, a succession plan can be put into place to develop future leaders. In order to determine success factors, three instruments were administered; a measure of personality, the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire, and two leadership/managerial styles questionnaires, the Competing Values Framework and the Leadership Orientation Survey. This study involved two participant samples. Forty-one executives from three Las Vegas hotel/casino properties completed the three questionnaires and 275 peers and/or subordinates completed the two leadership/managerial styles questionnaires on their behalf. Results of the 16 …

Violating The Feminine Land, Body, And Spirit In Western American Literature, Gregory Alan Wright Jan 2007

Violating The Feminine Land, Body, And Spirit In Western American Literature, Gregory Alan Wright

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The literature of the American West, much like the history of this region, is replete with images and stories of violence. Although pop culture (i.e. popular Westerns, film, television, etc.) has inculcated the idea that the West is synonymous with violence, the origins of this supposition begins with the arrival of Europeans to the New World, which, at the point of discovery, signified the West. European conquerors and colonists brought with them, along with their hopes and dreams for a fresh start on the new continent, the Judeo-Christian cultural values and traditions of the old continent. This ideological position condoned …

Human And Pet Interaction: Companion Animals And The Formation Of Identity, Lisa Louise Sarmicanic Jan 2007

Human And Pet Interaction: Companion Animals And The Formation Of Identity, Lisa Louise Sarmicanic

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Keeping companion animals is commonplace. Each year Americans spend over 34.3 billion dollars on pet food, pet toys, and veterinary care, and within households, the person with primary responsibility for the care of a pet is usually female (American Pet Product Manufacturers Association 24(34). Although literature on the human/animal bond is becoming more extensive, relatively little has been written about the dynamics of the daily social interaction between humans---specifically women---and pets. In response to this lack of literature, this study asks: What is the nature of the social interplay between women and their companion animals? And how do women integrate …

Molecular Mechanism Of Methyl Jasmonate Induced Apoptosis In Human Cancer Cells, Venkat Laxmi Yeruva Jan 2007

Molecular Mechanism Of Methyl Jasmonate Induced Apoptosis In Human Cancer Cells, Venkat Laxmi Yeruva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the cytotoxic activity of four plant derived compounds including perillic acid (PA), Perillyl alcohol (POH), cis jasmone (CJ) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) on a variety of human cancer cell lines: Breast (MDA-MB-435, MDA-MB-231, DC4, DB46, T47D, SKBR3 and ZR75-1), Prostate (PC-3 and DU-145) and Lung (A549, H520 and H2170). It was demonstrated that these compounds induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis by themselves or in combination with other agents. Specifically, MJ decreases membrane fluidity resulting in an activation of tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1) which signals apoptosis via caspase 8 and 2. Combination studies demonstrated that …

Characterization Of Stage Vi Petrocalcic Horizons: S Nevada And Nw Arizona, Amy Lynn Brock Jan 2007

Characterization Of Stage Vi Petrocalcic Horizons: S Nevada And Nw Arizona, Amy Lynn Brock

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Highly indurated petrocalcic soil horizons are records of paleoclimate, and past geomorphic and pedogenic processes that have occurred in arid and semi-arid regions. This research used geomorphic mapping, profile descriptions and sampling, and micromorphological and chemical analyses to identify the geomorphic and pedogenic processes that contributed to the development of stage II-VI petrocalcic horizons at Mormon Mesa, Nevada. Soil pisoliths are described as stage II soil pendants and nodules incorporated into the indurated horizons as rotated soil pendants with pendant lamina on their undersides and as fragments of petrocalcic materials with pendant lamina on their undersides. These soil features record …

Thermochronological Constraints On Mesozoic Tectonism In Southwest Us And New Zealand; And Argon-Argon Age Spectra From Artificially Mixed Micas, Joseph Kula Jan 2007

Thermochronological Constraints On Mesozoic Tectonism In Southwest Us And New Zealand; And Argon-Argon Age Spectra From Artificially Mixed Micas, Joseph Kula

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The four chapters in this dissertation consist of projects that utilized 40Ar/39Ar thermochronometry. Chapters 1 and 2 are from a study of the Sisters shear zone on Stewart Island, New Zealand. In these studies, thermal histories obtained using 40Ar/39Ar thermochronometry were combined with field and microstructural observations collected from deformed rocks. These data indicate extensional deformation along the Sisters shear zone was the youngest event related to the breakup of the paleo-Gondwana margin. The Sisters shear zone is related to formation of the Great South Basin and thinning of the Campbell Plateau. The shear zone is also spatially and kinematically …

Crackdown, Heather Winterer Jan 2007

Crackdown, Heather Winterer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The poems of Crackdown follow the progress of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola written in the 16th century. Like the Exercises, the poems are divided into sections which correspond to the week on sin and reform ("Translations/Valley of the Shadow'), the week on the life of Christ ("Translations/The Call of the Temporal King"), the week on the Passion ("Translations/Crackdown"), and the week on the Resurrection ("Translations/Apparition"). The work is framed by "Translations/An Approach" which acknowledges the Anima Christi prayer at the beginning of the Exercises as an embedded acrostic; Each section begins with a prayer and several preludes …

Development Of Seat Shock Isolation Systems, Erik Wolf Jan 2007

A numerical model has been created to predict the behavior of seat shock isolation systems exposed to mine blast loaDing The model is a two dimensional, five degree-of-freedom, rigid body, mass-spring-damper approximation of the seat system and human occupant. The outputs of the model are the positions, velocities, and accelerations of the system masses, the forces of the connecting elements, such as the seat cushion force, the load limiter force, the spinal force, and the Dynamic Response Index (DRI) based on the pelvic z-axis acceleration. The model has been calibrated with drop tower test data collected by the Army Research …

The Effect Of Concomitant Ecstasy-Marijuana Use On Auditory Verbal Learning And Memory Performance, Kimberly M Cramer Jan 2007

The Effect Of Concomitant Ecstasy-Marijuana Use On Auditory Verbal Learning And Memory Performance, Kimberly M Cramer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous research indicates that ecstasy users exhibit deficits of verbal learning and memory. This research has not considered polydrug use in ecstasy users, especially marijuana. Marijuana is an important confound because 90 percent of ecstasy users also use marijuana. Several studies have suggested that marijuana use alters verbal memory functioning; consequently, it is difficult to ascertain whether the observed memory deficits in ecstasy users are attributable to ecstasy, marijuana, or other drug use. The present study examined the effects of marijuana and ecstasy on verbal memory function. Marijuana use was accounted for by recruiting concurrent ecstasy-marijuana users' and ecstasy-naive marijuana-only …

An Examination Of Inner Experience: Anxiety, Lessel Lyle Hutchins Jan 2007

An Examination Of Inner Experience: Anxiety, Lessel Lyle Hutchins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) is used to examine the inner experience of seven individuals who have been diagnosed with at least one anxiety disorder and four control individuals. Idiographic results for each of the 11 participants are provided, including a description of frequent and rare/unique experiences of each participant. These results are followed by between participant nomothetic comparisons. Among the results, it was found that anxious participants experienced more indefinite figure-ground and concrete experiences when compared to controls. Anxious participants are also more likely than controls to engage in negative valence self-evaluations and rate moments as being anxious. There is …

"Perpetual Movement, And A Border Of Mystery": The Transatlantic Imagined Community And Henry James' "The Golden Bowl", Nancy Cunard And "Negro: An Anthology", And Jean Rhys' "Wide Sargasso Sea", Oliver Quimby Melton Jan 2007

"Perpetual Movement, And A Border Of Mystery": The Transatlantic Imagined Community And Henry James' "The Golden Bowl", Nancy Cunard And "Negro: An Anthology", And Jean Rhys' "Wide Sargasso Sea", Oliver Quimby Melton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many modernist writers attempted to transcend nationality but are ultimately unable to do so because of an unyielding fact of post-eighteenth century existence; namely, that a person possesses a nationality is an unavoidable, requisite donnee of modern life. This dissertation argues that this paradox was effectively resolved in the Atlantic world, an especially active locus of modernist meta-nationality, where a dialogic, unfinalizable transatlantic "nation" or, using Benedict Anderson's term, "imagined community" formed. This study examines three particular writers and works that frame and contribute to the development of this imagined community. First, I argue that the ideal "Anglo-Saxon total" Henry …

Changes were made to existing assessments and two new assessment tools were implemented. Findings …

School Refusal Behavior: The Relationship Between Family Environment And Parenting Style, Gillian Victoria Chapman Jan 2007

School Refusal Behavior: The Relationship Between Family Environment And Parenting Style, Gillian Victoria Chapman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

School refusal behavior has been researched and discussed within psychological and educational communities for over a century, and family environment has been found to influence such behavior. Specifically, differences have been found with respect to the function of youth school refusal behavior and levels of familial independence, cohesion, and conflict. Parenting styles have also been found to influence the behavior of youth. Authoritative parenting is associated with children who perform well scholastically and exhibit few internalizing or externalizing behaviors. Family environment and parenting styles have not been researched as joint influences on school refusal behavior. This study investigated possible effects …

Analysis Of Iodide And Iodate In Soil And Water, James W Dorman Jan 2007

Analysis Of Iodide And Iodate In Soil And Water, James W Dorman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Halide anions such as iodide have important roles in biological and environmental sciences. Environmental iodine is useful in oceanography and atmospheric studies as well as studies of soils and mineral deposits. The fission product, Iodine-129, is a major concern to the Department of Energy because it is a radiation hazard to the public. Consequently, there is great potential value in examining patterns of iodine migration and sorption near weapons test sites and nuclear waste facilities. Traditional iodide analyses, such as by ion chromatography or ion selective electrode, are generally limited to ppm concentrations. Electrochemical methods are very sensitive but vulnerable …

Piscivory By Non-Native Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis Aureus ) In Clark County, Nevada, Shawn C Goodchild Jan 2007

Piscivory By Non-Native Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis Aureus ) In Clark County, Nevada, Shawn C Goodchild

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fish communities that share an evolutionary history typically have mechanisms to offset impacts presented by other species. Fish, especially non-game species, which are intermingled with non-native species for which they lack a shared history, are often poorly adapted to offset these impacts. Non-native fish affect native fish through predation, competition, displacement, and disease, affects which are often synergistic. Native fish within the Muddy River system (Clark County, Nevada) experienced a precipitous decline in numbers following an illegal introduction of blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) during the 1990's. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if tilapia were directly predating upon …

A Diagram Of The Whole New World, Caleb D Mammen Jan 2007

A Diagram Of The Whole New World, Caleb D Mammen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

My creative thesis, a diagram of the whole new world, is a book of poems that explores and discovers what it means to write in a native tongue and also what it means to lose nativity all together. Travel is a treated theme, literally, as most of the poems were written across the world, as well as metaphysically, in the sense of making and erasing new boundaries of perception; Each poem aims to exhibit its own form as it itself is made. So, I have not written them in the shadow of any particular formal constraint(s). Rather, I have borrowed …

Parsing Neurocognitive Heterogeneity In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Brian D Leany Jan 2007

Parsing Neurocognitive Heterogeneity In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Brian D Leany

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur quite frequently in children and adolescents. One difficulty in understanding and treating TBI lies in the heterogeneous nature of its acquisition and mechanism of injury, and the resulting neurocognitive impairment. While there are instruments that exist to identify such impairment, they typically are divided into very broad domains of academic performance. Tests such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and the Woodcock Johnson are helpful in identifying impairment within the realm of academic aptitude, but have thus far not provided specific enough information as to the impairment of the underlying neurocognitive process that …

An Analysis Of Finite And Non-Finite Verbs In Selected Passages In The Gospel Of Mark, Joseph P. Petrini

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines finite and non-finite verbs in The Gospel of Mark 15:22-39 and 16:1-7 in Greek, Latin, Gothic and Old English. The study is a comparison of the person, tense, mood and voice in all four languages, as well as a comparison of strength, weakness and class of the Germanic verbs. Also, attention was paid to the use of available cognates for subsequent translations.

The Thermal Ecology Of The Red-Spotted Toad, Bufo Punctatus, Across Life History, Candice Marie Rausch Jan 2007

The Thermal Ecology Of The Red-Spotted Toad, Bufo Punctatus, Across Life History, Candice Marie Rausch

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Compared with other terrestrial vertebrates, amphibians are generally less tolerant of thermal extremes. The Mojave Desert has ambient temperatures outside the proposed thermal tolerance zone of its mort abundant amphibian, the Red-spotted toad (Bufo (Anaxyrus) punctatus). Few data have been presented regarding the thermal ecology of these animals, including their thermal histories and proposed strategies to avoid temperature extremes. Previous studies suggest B. punctatus avoids extreme thermal exposure and adult toads experience body temperature (Tb) below a proposed critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of 35°C, and can maintain Tb at 25°C during the winter. Further, previous studies indicate a CTmax for …

Cultural Implications Of Architectural Mortar And Plaster Selection At Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, Shane David Rumsey Jan 2007

Cultural Implications Of Architectural Mortar And Plaster Selection At Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, Shane David Rumsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The research presented here utilizes both mineralogical and elemental analyses to examine prehistoric architectural mortar and plaster samples from kivas at two Pueblo III period cliff house sites in Mesa Verde National Park. In order to provide a thorough geochemical characterization of mortar and plaster samples analytic techniques including x-ray diffractometry (XRD), inductively coupled plasma---mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and analytical electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) have been utilized. Similarities and differences in mortar selection among those sites and kivas sampled are then discussed in terms of cultural implications. The most significant result is a temporal trend in mortar selection from early to late …

What Are Friends For?, David Eric Surratt Jan 2007

What Are Friends For?, David Eric Surratt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As social beings, nearly all of us find that the development of individual identity requires an acceptance of others' influence, whether good or had. The specifics of self-concept, as we typically understand the term, can only exist relative to one's perceptions of outside selves, in all their likeness and, more importantly, dissimilarity to our own. To know what we are is to know what we are not; These eight, highly disparate works of short fiction all seek, in some way, to describe the evolution of individual identity that results when separate paths cross, with a broad emphasis on the by-products …

Document Type Classification From Document Images, Jason Montgomery Vergara Jan 2007

Document Type Classification From Document Images, Jason Montgomery Vergara

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The most common features that classification systems use is simply to consider all words as features and determine the probability of the document's category based on these words. When given document images, sophisticated optical character recognizers can be used to provide more than the simple text that traditional classification systems use. This metadata and extracting additional features from the document text can improve classification of document images; We have found a greater than 1% increase in recall when looking at font size metadata and extracting other features such as words used in uppercased lines. Since our dataset can have multi-page …

Dietary Patterns And Breast Cancer Risk In The Shanghai Breast Cancer Study, Xiaohui Cui, Qi Dai, Marilyn Tseng, Xiao-Ou Shu, Yu-Tang Gao, Wei Zheng

Kinesiology and Public Health

The association of breast cancer with dietary patterns such as a western diet has not been studied in Asian women. We examined this among Shanghai Breast Cancer Study participants. Cases were of ages 25 to 64 years, diagnosed 08/1996-03/ 1998, and identified through a rapid case ascertainment system supplemented by the Shanghai Cancer Registry. Controls, selected from the general population of urban Shanghai, were frequency matched to cases by 5-year age group. Participants provided information on diet, lifestyle, and reproductive factors. In principal component analysis among 1,556 controls, two patterns emerged. a ‘‘vegetable-soy’’ pattern (tofu, cauliflower, beans, bean sprouts, green …
