Releasing Our Technological Imaginations: A Translation Of Maxine Greene's Aesthetic Educational Theory Into The Language Of Instructional Technology, Mara Linaberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study is a journey--an attempt to translate personal experience and theory into a practical philosophical guide for teachers who desire to utilize the rich palette of technology in broad, meaningful ways. It begins with a reflection upon the impact that aesthetic educational theory has had on my teaching practices with technology. The project then moves on to identify and define the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of both Instructional Technology and aesthetic education, seeking to locate common elements which will assist in merging the two disciplines. Through examining the demands of various qualitative methods to the purpose of this …
Microbial Transformation Of 3-Nitro-4-Hydroxybenzene Arsonic Acid (Roxarsone), Bryan Crable
Microbial Transformation Of 3-Nitro-4-Hydroxybenzene Arsonic Acid (Roxarsone), Bryan Crable
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Land application of chicken litter from production houses that use the organoarsenical 3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzenearsonic acid (roxarsone) results in deposition of significant quantities of arsenic into United States soil each year. Used widely as a feed additive in the poultry industry, roxarsone was originally thought to be stable in the environment. However, recent evidence from our lab, as well as others, has established that this benign compound is readily transformed via several intermediates into inorganic arsenate. While microbial activity has been implicated in this process, there is no direct evidence suggesting the specific processes or the organisms involved.
Using a physiological and …

In Defense Of The Roosevelt Court, Wilson Ray Huhn
In Defense Of The Roosevelt Court, Wilson Ray Huhn
Florida A & M University Law Review
The overriding purpose of the New Deal was to create opportunities for the common person to acquire a stake in society. The Roosevelt appointees to the Supreme Court were unwilling to allow either entrenched wealth or arbitrary governmental action to interfere with that objective. They remade the Constitution, but in so doing they returned the Constitution to its original purpose--the protection of personal liberty. The Roosevelt Court laid the foundation for a jurisprudence of human rights upon which the Warren Court and subsequent Supreme Courts have continued to build. Two justices presently serving on the Supreme Court--Justice Antonin Scalia and …
Retaliatory Harassment: Sex And The Hostile Coworker As The Enforcer Of Workplace Norms, Rhonda Reaves
Retaliatory Harassment: Sex And The Hostile Coworker As The Enforcer Of Workplace Norms, Rhonda Reaves
Journal Publications
This Article focuses on the legal treatment of retaliatory harassment claims. It argues that retaliatory harassment is an often misunderstood and underanalyzed concept in the law of workplace harassment. This Article seeks to distinguish the legal treatment of retaliatory harassment from sexual harassment. Part I of this Article describes the use of harassment as a method of enforcing workplace norms; it details how harassment is used not just to further a worker's own individual sexist (or racist) agenda, but how it is used to keep women (and minority groups) in subordinate positions. Part II describes the current legal frameworks for …

Morse Code, Da Vinci Code, Tax Code And ... Churches: An Historical And Constitutional Analysis Of Why Section 501(C)(3) Does Not Apply To Churches, Jennifer M. Smith
Journal Publications
This article is about the United States federal tax code and churches. In particular, it discusses the interplay between section 501(c)(3) and churches in America. Section II presents a background of the history of the tax exemption for churches and the judicial holdings relative to that exemption. Section III explores the historical development of the separation between church and state, tax exemptions, and section 501(c)(3). Section V analyzes section 501(c)(3) under the Constitution's free speech and religion clauses. Section V proposes a recommendation, and Section VI is the conclusion.

Lng Facility Siting And Environmental (In)Justice: Is It Time For A National Siting Scheme?, Eileen Gauna
Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines the distributional and other environmental justice issues arising from the current initiative to rapidly site multiple LNG import facilities in order to increase the supply of natural gas into the continental United States. This Article further examines the necessity of creating a national siting scheme to avoid exacerbating existing racial disparities in risk-producing land use practices.

In-Stream Denitrification: Pilot Studies And Site Characteristics On A Headwater Stream, Alison J. Milliman
In-Stream Denitrification: Pilot Studies And Site Characteristics On A Headwater Stream, Alison J. Milliman
Open Access Master's Theses
Increased loads of watershed nitrogen (N) are a major cause of water quality degradation, especially in coastal waters. According to regional budgets, only 20-30% of watershed N inputs reach coastal waters indicating there are N "sinks" across the landscape. Headwater streams can generate substantial N processing; however, several studies have observed minimal N retention within-streams. We assessed the reach-scale in-stream N removal and denitrification rates in one Rhode Island headwater stream. Using the constant rate injection method, we tracked the fate of isotopically enriched nitrate along a 500 meter stream reach. The objectives of this study were to assess the …

Status Of Birds Newly Recorded In Arkansas Since 1985, Douglas A. James, Joseph C. Neal, Max Parker, Charles Mills
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In 1994 we published an annotated list of 14 bird species that were newly discovered in Arkansas since the publication in 1986 of the monograph "Arkansas Birds, Their Distribution and Abundance." We now add 22 more new species found in Arkansas since the 1994 publication, and update the status of the original 14. Adding these 36 species to the number included in "Arkansas Birds" totals 402 bird species currently reported in Arkansas.

16s Rrna Dgge Analysis Of Gut And Hepatopancreas Microflora In The Isopod Oniscus Asellus, De Vona Glover
McNair Scholars Journal
The microflora (microbes) of the gastrointestinal tract have been found to play an important role in the health of animals. In addition to pathogenic microbes and their associated negative effects, beneficial microbes have important positive effects. However, the dynamics of the transmission and colonization of the microflora between mates and between parents and offspring are still largely unknown. Variation in the microflora between individuals suggests that selection can play a role in this transmission and colonization. As a preliminary step to investigate the transfer of microflora between male and female isopods, microbial DNA from Oniscus asellus, washed and unwashed gastrointestinal …

Interactive Media—The Next Literature?, Latricia Phillips
McNair Scholars Journal
Perceptions of video games (computer games/games played on consoles) have evolved from stereotypical viewpoints that games are just a type of passive learning. My research demonstrates that video games are indeed active by categorizing levels of interactivity and by providing additional ways that they have educational value: defining the cognitive aspect, drawing a comparison between the developments of a children’s museum, and studying serious games. I then establish the relationship between video games and literature, drawing comparisons between the relationships between the author, reader, and text and the player. I conclude that video games can recategorize literature.

Transcriptomic Analysis Of Rdx And Tnt Interactive Sublethal Effects In The Earthworm Eisenia Fetida, Ping Gong, Xin Guan, Laura S. Anouye, Youping Deng, Mehdi Pirooznia, Edward J. Perkins
Faculty Publications
Background
Explosive compounds such as TNT and RDX are recalcitrant contaminants often found co-existing in the environment. In order to understand the joint effects of TNT and RDX on earthworms, an important ecological and bioindicator species at the molecular level, we sampled worms (Eisenia fetida) exposed singly or jointly to TNT (50 mg/kg soil) and RDX (30 mg/kg soil) for 28 days and profiled gene expression in an interwoven loop designed microarray experiment using a 4k-cDNA array. Lethality, growth and reproductive endpoints were measured.
Results
Sublethal doses of TNT and RDX had no significant effects on the survival …

Hand-Holding, Brow-Beating, And Shaming Into Compliance, Craig A. Max
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Tax authorities and policy planners have a variety of tools at their disposal to create mechanisms to encourage and enforce compliance with revenue collection systems. Traditionally, these mechanisms include the possibility of criminal prosecution as well as civil pecuniary sanctions. Despite the dominate role that prosecution and pecuniary sanctions hold internationally, there exists a range of alternative enforcement mechanisms utilized. The United States has recently started to implement nonpecuniary enforcement devices to achieve policy goals, namely the encouragement of participating with the federal taxing system. This Note attempts to take an initial step into exploring the range of international enforcement …
The Role Of International Agreements In Achieving Food Security, Jack A. Bobo
The Role Of International Agreements In Achieving Food Security, Jack A. Bobo
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article discusses how international agreements impact the ability of science and technology to enhance food security. International agreements, domestic laws, and regulations have the power to promote scientific research and the adoption of new technology through effective, efficient, and predictable science-based regulatory systems, or to impede development and adoption of new technology by miring it in burdensome or unnecessary regulations. This Article examines the disparate impacts of international agreements on food security through a case study of agricultural biotechnology. In particular, the Article looks at the principles and guidelines for risk assessment developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and …
International Cooperation To Defend The Food Supply Chain, John T. Hoffman, Shaun Kennedy
International Cooperation To Defend The Food Supply Chain, John T. Hoffman, Shaun Kennedy
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Global Food System Defense is an area where, so far, we have not yet obtained real traction in this post-September 11, 2001 world of international terrorism. Cooperative international efforts to defend and protect the global food supply system may well be crucial to the security of every developed nation in the coming years. Affordable energy--currently fossil fuels--and food are at the heart of the security and prosperity of every nation. Yet the food protection efforts that have been historically supported by the international community have focused on traditional "food security," defined as access to sufficient calories and nutrition to sustain …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Witczuk, Julia J. M.S., Summer2007 Wildlife Biology MONITORING PROGRAM AND ASSESSMENT OF COYOTE PREDATION FOR OLYMPIC MARMOTS Chairperson: L. Scott Mills The Olympic marmot (Marmota olympus) is an endemic species to the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State. Although nearly all of its range is enclosed within Olympic National Park, declines and local extirpations of the species have been documented. The most plausible driver of the decline appears to be an increase in predator pressure. My thesis had two main objectives. First, I investigated the role of non-native coyotes (Canis latrans) in causing marmot mortality. Through park-wide carnivore scat analysis I determined …
