Environmental Factors Affecting Water Intake In Steers Finishing In Feedlots, Rodrigo A. Arias, Terry L. Mader
Environmental Factors Affecting Water Intake In Steers Finishing In Feedlots, Rodrigo A. Arias, Terry L. Mader
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Simple and multiple regression analyses were executed using records of six experiments conducted from 1999 to 2006 at the University of Nebraska Northeast Research and Extension Center. The objective of the study was to obtain the best equation to predict water intake of feedlot steers under summer and winter weather conditions. The analysis permitted regression equations to be obtained for summer, winter and both seasons (overall model). From simple regression analysis, the best predictor of water intake was minimum temperature with r2= 0.61 in the overall model. Whereas, from multiple regression analysis the overall model with the best …
Effect Of Distillers Grains Composition And Level On Steers Consuming High-Quality Forage, Mark E. Corrigan, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Kyle J. Vander Pol, Matthew A. Greenquist, Matt K. Luebbe, Kip Karges, Matt L. Gibson
Effect Of Distillers Grains Composition And Level On Steers Consuming High-Quality Forage, Mark E. Corrigan, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Kyle J. Vander Pol, Matthew A. Greenquist, Matt K. Luebbe, Kip Karges, Matt L. Gibson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dried distillers grains (DDG) supplementation level and composition on growing steer performance and forage intake. Factors included DDG supplementation level (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1.00% of BW), and DDG solubles level (0, 5.4, 14.5, 19.1, or 22.1% DM). Final BW improved, and forage intake decreased with increasing levels of DDG. An interaction between DDG supplementation level and solubles level was observed on ADG and F:G and was likely related to supplemental fat levels. Supplementation of forages with DDG improves performance while decreasing forage intake when fat levels are not too great.
Houses Great And Small: Reevaluating The 'House' In Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, Carrie Heitman
Houses Great And Small: Reevaluating The 'House' In Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, Carrie Heitman
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In recent years, a growing number of archaeologists have explored the potential of expanding Lévi-Strauss’ concept of house societies to better understand specific archaeological contexts. Looking specifically at the classificatory distinction between “great houses” and “small houses” within Chaco Canyon (A.D. 850–1180), I suggest this theoretical model might yield new insights with regard to four symbolic dimensions of house construction: the use of wood, directional offerings, resurfacing practices, and the bones of ancestors. Using Puebloan ethnographic literature and cross-cultural comparisons, I suggest a house model analysis may serve to integrate anomalous “ceremonial” dimensions of house construction in an effort to …
Effect Of Sorting And Feeding Optaflexx On Performance And Economics Of Long Yearling Steers, William A. Griffin, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Dillon M. Feuz, Kyle J. Vander Pol, Matthew A. Greenquist
Effect Of Sorting And Feeding Optaflexx On Performance And Economics Of Long Yearling Steers, William A. Griffin, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Dillon M. Feuz, Kyle J. Vander Pol, Matthew A. Greenquist
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A two-year experiment evaluated the effects of sorting long yearling steers by initial feedlot BW and supplementing 200 mg/steer of Optaflexx daily the last 28 days of the feeding period on ADG, F/G, carcass characteristics and profitability. Feedlot ADG, F/G, and profitability were not effected by sorting. However, sorted cattle exhibited increased fat thickness, increased ribeye area, and increased percentage of carcasses with a yield grade of four or higher. Supplementing Optaflexx the last 28 days of the feeding period had no effect on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, or profitability.
Off-Flavor Mitigation In Cow Steaks, Donald A. Moss, Chris R. Calkins
Off-Flavor Mitigation In Cow Steaks, Donald A. Moss, Chris R. Calkins
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Strip loins from fed (high energy diet for at least 60 days) and nonfed cows were treated with 1% water a solution containing one of four commercial bitter blockers to determine if off-flavors could be blocked. Neither trained nor consumer taste panels detected differences among the bitter blockers. Trained panelists frequently found metallic, sour, rancid, bloody, salty, and bitter flavors, with nonfed cow beef having more bloody, bitter, and burnt off-flavors. Consumers most frequently identified bloody, metallic and liver-like off-flavors in cow beef, but found no differences in frequency of off-flavor notes between fed and nonfed cow beef. Commercial bitter …
Effects Of Aging On Beef Chuck And Round Muscles Enhanced With Ammonium Hydroxide And Salt, Adam E. Hamling, Chris R. Calkins
Effects Of Aging On Beef Chuck And Round Muscles Enhanced With Ammonium Hydroxide And Salt, Adam E. Hamling, Chris R. Calkins
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
This study was conducted to determine if aging alters the beneficial effects of enhancement with a 20% solution of water, ammonium hydroxide, and salt, on beef steaks. For all muscles (triceps brachii, biceps femoris, rectus femoris), steaks had lower shear force values when compared to non-pumped controls at every aging period (1, 7, 14 days). Also, enhanced steaks received more desirable evaluations for tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and overall acceptability at every aging period from consumer taste panels. These data indicate aging does not decrease the benefits of enhancement.
Ranking Beef Muscles For Warner-Bratzler Shear Force And Trained Sensory Panel Ratings, Gary A. Sullivan, Chris R. Calkins
Ranking Beef Muscles For Warner-Bratzler Shear Force And Trained Sensory Panel Ratings, Gary A. Sullivan, Chris R. Calkins
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Combining 60 years of published research, 40 different beef muscles were ranked by Warner-Bratzler shear force. Relative ranks for tenderness, juiciness and beef flavor ratings were also determined. The psoas major and infraspinatus are the two most tender. Sensory tenderness ratings correlated to shear force means (-0.85; p=0.001) where a desirable tenderness rating reflected a low shear force. These data help reconcile differences among various studies of beef tenderness and provide a weighted ranking for beef muscles, which will be useful when selecting muscles for value-added beef products.

Diurnal And Dietary Impacts On Purine Derivative Excretion From Spot Samples Of Urine, Grant I. Crawford, Kyle Vander Pol, James C. Macdonald, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An individual feeding experiment was conducted to estimate diurnal and dietary impacts on microbial CP (MCP) production estimated from urinary purine derivative (PD) and creatinine excretion. Heifers were fed one of three diets formulated to produce differences in MCP production: an 85% steam-flaked corn-based diet (SFC); the SFC diet with 1.5% urea (UREA); or a corn milling byproduct-based diet (BYPROD). Spot samples of urine were collected at 0700 and 1700 hours. No urine collection time x dietary treatment interactions were present for any variable. Dry matter intake, ADG, and F:G were poorest with the SFC treatment. Urinary PD:creatinine (PD:C) ratio …

Chronic Exposure Of Ruminal Fluid Cultures To Treatments That Inhibit Methanogenesis, Eric J. Behlke, James M. Takacs, Stephen W. Ragsdale, Clayton Mcneff, Peter Newsome, Jess L. Miner
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Methanogenesis in ruminal cultures was inhibited by Yucca shidigera, 2-bromoethanesulfonate, and a nitrofuranyl para-aminobenzoic acid derivative. Only the nitrofuranyl para-aminobenzoic acid derivative remained effective beyond 10 days of culture indicating that this may be an effective treatment for chronically inhibiting methane production in cattle.
Inhibition Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Manipulates Follicles In Beef Females, Robert A. Cushman, Debra T. Clopton, Mark F. Allan, S. E. Echternkamp, Andrea S. Cupp
Inhibition Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Manipulates Follicles In Beef Females, Robert A. Cushman, Debra T. Clopton, Mark F. Allan, S. E. Echternkamp, Andrea S. Cupp
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is produced by cells surrounding the egg in the follicle. If VEGF is inhibited, ovulation does not occur. Understanding how VEGF regulates follicle development may allow for manipulation of estrous cycles. In previous studies in our laboratory, blocking the actions of VEGF decreased activation of early stage follicles in neonatal rat ovary cultures. Therefore, we hypothesized inhibition of VEGF actions would also inhibit follicle activation in bovine ovarian cortical cultures. Inhibition of VEGF did inhibit follicle progression, thus regulation of VEGF may be a way to manipulate follicle development and more accurately time ovulation.

I leave a good portion of my art up to chance or my unconscious self, this shows me how closely my prints and drawings relate to the dream world. In dreams most of the physical laws are abandoned, reason and mind are not the dictators of the dream. Dreams have their own logic and are a perfect place to explore a narrative that leaves itself open for the viewer to put any number of meanings into.
Detection Of The Bloodmeal Origin Of Mosquitoes Collected At Alligator Farms, And West Nile Virus Activity In Mosquitoes Collected From Alligator Farms, Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Sites, And Larval Habitats, Isik Unlu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A three year study was conducted to determine if testing mosquitoes collected in modified sentinel chicken boxes for West Nile Virus (WNV) or testing sentinel chickens for WNV antibody would detect WNV activity prior to reports of human cases in East Baton Rouge (EBR) Parish, Louisiana. In one year we also compared the effectiveness of CDC light traps, gravid traps, and sentinel chicken box traps for collecting WNV positive mosquitoes. In all three years, we detected WNV activity in mosquito collections from sentinel chicken box traps prior to the onset of human cases, while there were no seroconversions in the …

Identification Of Molecular Markers And Association Mapping Of Selected Loci Associated With Agronomic Traits In Rice, Suresh Babu Kadaru
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Discriminate Analysis as a procedure was evaluated to select molecular markers associated with complex traits in US rice germplasm. Markers for percent head rice, percent total rice, and grain yield were identified with high levels of correct classification that mapped within or near traditional Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL). Mixed model-regression procedure to identify molecular markers that predict phenotypic variance associated with four agronomic traits was created and validated in two distinct rice inbred populations. Main and epistatic effects were identified by standard hypothesis testing and Bayesian information criteria in a multivariate format. The new procedure increased power and enhanced prediction …
Wood Liquefaction In The Presence Of Phenol With A Weak Acid Catalyst And Its Potential For Novolac Type Wood Adhesives, Hui Pan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wood liquefaction was conducted using phenol as a reagent solvent with oxalic acid as a catalyst. A series of studies were done on liquefied wood, liquefied wood residues, novolac-type liquefied wood resins, and bio-composites fabricated from liquefied wood resin. The results of the liquefied wood residue characterization revealed that the liquefaction reactions conducted in different reaction vessels underwent different liquefaction mechanisms. The crystallinity indexes of the liquefied wood residues were higher than that of the original wood, indicating that the amorphous lignin was the most susceptible component in wood to the liquefaction reaction. Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions were found to …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the technological development of e-faculty at five randomly selected Carnegie classified (2006) Doctorate-Granting Research Universities with very high research activity (RU/VH) in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). The majority of e-faculty report that they do not have release time/reduced teaching load for preparing web-based materials/courses, nor do they have graduate or teaching assistants available for assisting with web-based learning. However, a little over half of them reported having instructional designers or curriculum developers to help with the designing of web-based materials and a large majority reported having adequate institutional research resources (library holdings that are accessible …
Hydrodynamic Modeling Of A Hypothetical River Diversion Near Empire, Louisiana, Nathan Lamont Dill
Hydrodynamic Modeling Of A Hypothetical River Diversion Near Empire, Louisiana, Nathan Lamont Dill
LSU Master's Theses
Hydrodynamic models of a hypothetical Mississippi river diversion near Empire, LA are constructed using two popular finite element codes RMA2 and ADCIRC. In a series of simulations eddy viscosity parameters and bottom friction parameters are varied. Constant boundary conditions, discharge inflow and elevation outflow, are applied and water surface elevation and velocity solutions at fully developed flow are taken as steady-state results. A particle tracking code is developed and applied to the velocity solutions to aid in flow field comparisons. The results elucidate the model sensitivities to the varied parameters, and also provide for a comparison of the two different …

Phylogenetic Systematics, Biogeography, And Evolutionary Ecology Of The True Crocodiles (Eusuchia: Crocodylidae: Crocodylus), Jamie Richard Oaks
LSU Master's Theses
Modern crocodylian systematics has been dominated by investigations of higher-level relationships aimed at resolving the disparity between morphological and molecular data, especially regarding the true gharial (Gavialis). Consequently, no studies to date have provided adequate resolution of the interspecific relationships within the most broadly distributed, ecologically diverse, and species-rich crocodylian genus, Crocodylus. In this study, Bayesian and ML partitioned phylogenetic analyses were performed on a DNA sequence dataset of 7,282 base pairs representing four mitochondrial regions, nine nuclear loci, and all 23 crocodylian species. The analyses were performed on a suite of partitioning strategies to investigate the modeling effects of …

Application-Specific Reliable Data Transfer In Wireless Sensor Networks, Damayanti Datta
Application-Specific Reliable Data Transfer In Wireless Sensor Networks, Damayanti Datta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a collection of sensor nodes and base stations connected via wireless medium. It sends data collected from the nodes to the base stations for generating information. The size and low cost of the sensor nodes as well as the WSN's ability to connect without wired links are its key advantages which enable it to be deployed in hostile or inaccessible environments at low cost. However, WSNs suffer from high data loss due to the inherent weaknesses in a wireless transmission medium, transmission problems in hostile environments due to human interference, etc. and node failures …

Narratives In Music: Schelmo, Hebraic Rhapsody For Cello And Orchestra, Asu Perihan Karadut
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Born in July 1880, in Geneva, Switzerland, Ernest Bloch became one of the leading composers of the 20th century. He wrote series of works, which he called “The Jewish Cycle.” They represented a new, distinctive musical language, in which Bloch combined eastern and western music traits. Schelomo, Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra (1915-16) was the last composition from the cycle. It showed mastery of a style Bloch had been developing since his earlier compositions. This project will show Schelomo’s place in “The Jewish Cycle” and its importance on Bloch’s departure from the popular trends of the early 20th century. …

Effects Of Capping On Biodegradation Of Organic Contaminants In Sediments, Eun Ju Lee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Sediment capping remains an effective remediation technique for contaminated sediments due to its capability to contain contaminants and provide a sound habitat for indigenous biota. This research investigated the effect of capping on biodegradation of organic contaminants in Anacostia River sediments using both experimental and modeling techniques. 14C–Phenanthrene mineralization was monitored under various redox conditions in Anacostia River sediments. Mineralization of 14C–phenanthrene was strongly linked to sulfate reduction, which was the more energetic process than any other anaerobic condition in Anacostia sediments. Sulfate is a more promising terminal electron acceptor for intrinsic degradation in Anacostia River and other PAH contaminated …
