Perceived Impact Of Peer Observation Of Teaching In Higher Education, Roisin Donnelly
Articles
This paper explores participant perceptions of the impact of a Peer Observation of Teaching scheme offered as part of an accredited Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching for academic staff/faculty in higher education. The Postgraduate Certificate Program has been designed to support the continuing professional development of academic staff/faculty through integration of peer learning. Inherent in the design and delivery of the Peer Observation of Teaching scheme is the belief by all involved that learning about teaching in higher education, and heightening a sense of professionalism, stems from a continuous process of transforming and constructing personal meaning in a variety of related …

Survival Of The Fittest? The Rebranding Of West Virginia Higher Education, James Martin Owston
Survival Of The Fittest? The Rebranding Of West Virginia Higher Education, James Martin Owston
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
During the years 1996 to 2005, West Virginia produced the greatest proportion (56.25%) of regionally accredited institutional rebrandings. In addition, the state experienced the greatest proportion (25%) of the specific “college-to-university” rebranding strategy than any other state. This study set out to discover the reasons why West Virginia produced such a high percentage of “college-to-university” changes. Using a mixed method approach of analysis, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative methods to determine the rationale, strategies, and implications of the college-to-university change. As West Virginia was viewed as a nested population in Appalachia, a population of 51 institutions that experienced the …
The Influence Of Organizational And Governance Structures On The Frequency Of Management Skill Utilization Of Community College Chief Executive Officers In The United States, Timothy R. Oxley
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Community colleges are purported to be in the midst of a leadership crisis due to the impending retirements of chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior administrators over the next several years. Concurrently, the demands upon CEOs to effectively and efficiently manage their institutions are more critical now in an effort to balance the demands placed upon them by public policy and institutional stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of institutional context, governance and organizational structures, on the frequency with which CEOs utilized certain management skills. The study population was community college CEOs as identified by …
Planning, Building, And Assessing An Online Information Literacy Tutorial: The Lobo Experience, Megan Oakleaf
Planning, Building, And Assessing An Online Information Literacy Tutorial: The Lobo Experience, Megan Oakleaf
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Each fall, first-year students arrive at colleges across the country with widely varying abilities to complete library research assignments. Some students enter higher education as veterans of the information seeking process, armed with strong school library media preparation and ready to conquer any research assignment. Far more first-year students are over-reliant on Internet resources, confused about distinctions between scholarly and popular sources, daunted by scores of article databases, and mystified by the LC classification system. Academic librarians face the challenge of establishing baseline information literacy skills in all students, often with limited time and resources. One way to confront this …

Community Engagement As A Cornerstone Enabling Learning And Teaching And Research In The Post Modern World, Robbie Collins, O. Curtis, S. Curtis, Laurie Stevenson
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
This paper demonstrates how community engagement can provide a cornerstone enabling research and learning and teaching to meet the challenges of relativity and uncertainty in a post modern world. In the field of education, the question of relevance is a constant criticism. If relevance is to be achieved, research andlearning and teaching need to be interwoven with community and community concerns, in ways that enhancethe outcomes for all stakeholders. The paper examines an academic’s university community engagement practice from a reflexive and cross disciplinary perspective. It seeks to identify the characteristics and qualities that define successful university community engagement practice …

Blended Learning In Higher Education: Theory And Praxis, G. Reinmann, J. Macdonald, Roisin Donnelly, J. Fransen, E. Poldner
Conference papers
Recent studies are showing that ‘blended learning’ is more than a mix between face-to-face and online education, or in other words: a mix of traditional and computer-based education. Blended learning seems to include mixtures between eLearning and other ways of learning, where the right choices have to be made in the distribution of learning content, didactical approaches, ways of communicating and characteristics of learning environments, in the perspective of the type of learning process and characteristics of students. This symposium provides evidence from qualitative studies of blended learning in practical situations, drawing on tutors’ and students’ perspectives, contrasted with theoretical …

Investigating Comprehensive Assessment Plans In Undergraduate Communication Studies Programs, Andrea Celeste Weber
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Outcome assessments of academic programs have become increasingly critical in recent years. A continuous process formed to "monitor and improve student learning," true assessment serves to focus institutions of higher education on student learning (Allen, 2004, p. 5). It is vital to understand and explore current assessment practices in departments of communication studies to ensure and enhance the quality and future of education in the field. This study represents an initial attempt at establishing a baseline of assessment practices utilized within departments of communication studies. The results exhibit the extent to which assessment is being used for continuous improvement of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to examine the perception of gender equality from the viewpoint of women administrators at Florida public and private two- and four-year institutions. Potential respondents were chosen from American College Personnel Association and/or National Association of Student Personnel Administrators databases. The data used for this study were obtained from 32 female administrators (50% response rate) who completed a self-administered online questionnaire, distributed to potential respondents in August and September, 2007. Collected data were entered into an SPSS database. Through data analysis, confidence intervals were reported for each survey item. Comparable means were studied for each of the six …

Perceptions And Needs Of Rural Young People In The South-West Of Western Australia : Implications For Pedagogy, Rhonda Oliver, Lynelle Watts, Joan Strikwerda-Brown, David Hodgson, Marilyn Palmer
Research outputs pre 2011
The original purpose of this study was to investigate youth needs, specifically in the south western region (the 'South West') of Western Australia, and then to explore how these needs might be addressed in terms of current curriculum and teaching practices. The following research questions guided our investigation:
- What are the educational and occupational aspirations of young people from the South West of Western Australia?
- What do young people identify as influences on their educational and occupational aspirations and attainment?
As the data collection progressed, it was evident to all those involved that, whilst there were expressed needs, …

Is The Roman Catholic Prohibition Of Female Priests Sexist?: How Catholic College Students Think About Women’S Ordination And Sexism, Michael Maher Jr, Linda M. Sever, Shaun Pichler
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
In April 2003, the researchers conducted a survey of undergraduate students living in residence halls at Loyola University Chicago. The majority of Catholic students in the study expressed disagreement with the statement, “Women should not be allowed to be clergy (priests, pastors, imams, rabbis, etc.),” and the majority of them expressed agreement with the statement, “Sexism is wrong.” This was not a surprise to the researchers. What was surprising was the fact that the correlation of the responses by Catholics between these two statements was insignificant (r = -.089). The researches explored this question with focus groups made up …

Pedagogy In Online Graduate Business Learning Environments, Alicia Maria Gallegos Butters Edd
Dissertations
Many higher education institutions have decided to offer graduate business online courses and full degree online programs. Offering a quality education for graduate business students online is of concern to business school professors, administrators, and students. Instructors are concerned with the content, delivery method, and level of student achievement. Instructional design support for the online instructors is often lacking in the online curriculum and pedagogy, leaving the faculty with a great deal of freedom to create their own course content, structure, and delivery without any formal distance education training. For this reason, it is imperative for universities to establish online …

Activism And Pedagogies: Feminist Reflections, Patricia Ticineto Clough, Michelle Fine

Together our two essays move between scenes of teaching and researching with women and men who are or have been in prison. Having written on ethnography, autoethnography, and participatory research, we both have sought a method that would allow us to abandon superficial identifications, mistaken for deep connection, with those who are or have been incarcerated. While we are conscious of the failures and successes of our attempts, we nonetheless write because what we have learned about the state's support for mass incarceration and the state's retreat from public higher education—particularly for persons of color—more than warrants it. With this …

Confronting The Evolving Safety And Security Challenge At Colleges And Universities, Oren R. Griffin
Confronting The Evolving Safety And Security Challenge At Colleges And Universities, Oren R. Griffin
Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works
Colleges and universities have long been scrutinized and confronted with lawsuits regarding safety and security measures designed and implemented to protect students and prevent dangerous incidents on campus. Under the doctrine of in loco parentis, college administrators assume responsibility for the physical safety and well-being of students as they matriculate through their academic programs. However, in recent decades, the realization that university communities are not immune to criminal activity has led to federal legislation and judicial opinions that have attempted to identify what legal duty colleges and universities have to prevent security breaches. Moreover, college and university administrators have looked …

Higher Education Desegregation: An Analysis Of State Efforts In Systems Formerly Operating Segregated Systems Of Higher Education, Edwin H. Litolff, Iii
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The landmark Supreme Court Decision of Brown v. the Board of Education in 1954 struck down the policy of separate but equal and set a legal precedent that racial discrimination in public education violates the United States constitution. Later the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibited colleges and universities from discriminating based upon age, sex, race, or religion. The Civil Rights Act strengthened the enforcement capabilities of the Office of Civil Rights in ensuring desegregation. These legislative and judicial efforts have engaged higher education and state officials in often-controversial attempts to desegregate systems and institutions of higher education. Because colleges and …

Hi-Tech Cheating: A Study Of Student Attitudes On Academic Dishonesty Involving The Use Of Information Technology, Michael P. Smith
Hi-Tech Cheating: A Study Of Student Attitudes On Academic Dishonesty Involving The Use Of Information Technology, Michael P. Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Despite the fact that research into cheating has continued for several decades, cheating in higher education appears to be widespread and endemic. This may be particularly troublesome for business school students, who, according to some research, appear to cheat more than students in other curriculums. Technology is giving students new opportunities to cheat. Companies are developing products specifically designed to help students cheat. Although there are some resources and tools to help faculty monitor things such as plagiarism, technology is providing a continuous stream of new opportunities for students to cheat, oftentimes without a high likelihood of being caught. Beliefs …

A Theory Of Curriculum Development In The Professions: An Integration Of Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory With Schwab's Deliberative Curriculum Theory, Shelley Ann Chapman
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
A hundred years ago, the problem with professional education was that it lacked a sound scientific foundation and opportunities for clinical practice. Throughout the past three decades, discussions on graduate professional education have focused on how to improve the theory/practice continuum, either through new formats or strategies, or by emphasizing one over the other. However, with the new century, new problems have emerged within the professional education arena. This dissertation has focused on two main problems in graduate professional education in the early 21st century: students are focusing too much on technical expertise and not enough on becoming transformed into …

A Community-Based Social Marketing Campaign To Green The Offices At Pacific University: Recycling, Paper Reduction, And Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, Elaine Janet Cole
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study describes a community-based social marketing (CBSM) research project to bring awareness and behavior change around paper reduction, recycling, and purchasing of environmentally preferred products (EPP) at a small liberal arts university in the Pacific Northwest. A university-wide green office campaign was designed and implemented over a semester. Components of the multiple methods research study were pre-post surveys, purchasing reports, a recycling study, and a waste audit. The results provide examples and insights into specific community-based social marketing tools that helped foster environmental behavior change. The paper also presents suggestions for future CBSM sustainability efforts at other universities. The …

Blink And They're Gone: A "Quick-Take" On Impulse Purchase Behavior And Enrollment Marketing In Higher Education, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Vahn Knight
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
The college-decision process that prospective students make has been characterized as deliberate and prolonged -- a classic extensive problem solving behavior model. New research indicates that a significant proportion of students engage in impluse purchase behavior when choosing a college. Marketing implications for enrollment management and "Blink An Intervention Model" are presented
