Going Home? Schooling In Mexico Of Transnational Children, Víctor Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The literature in international migration from Mexico to the U.S. has usually examined labor, juridical, political, and public health dimensions of the phenomena. However, the educational aspect of international migration is becoming a major concern for both countries. This article offers preliminary results from a survey of transnational students coming back from the U.S. to Mexican schools. The database includes information from a representative sample of public and private schools of Nuevo León (1st to 9th grade). It includes estimates of the number of transnational students, their school trajectories, and perspectives on their educational experience in both countries.

Work In Progress: Crossing The Engineering Border Into Art And Society With A Materials Selection For The Life Cycle Course, Katherine C. Chen, Blair London Oct 2006

Work In Progress: Crossing The Engineering Border Into Art And Society With A Materials Selection For The Life Cycle Course, Katherine C. Chen, Blair London

Materials Engineering

A new course in materials engineering has been developed to incorporate industrial design and sustainability principles. Many current engineering tasks require the ability to comprehend and consider the complicated interplay of technology with the environment and society. Thus the changing skill set required of future engineers is being reflected in the changes with our courses. We are stepping beyond the traditional boundaries of engineering courses to present a more holistic approach to problem solving. The use of materials and processing techniques is applied to product design, and thus involves consideration of the end user and the end of product life. …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper we present work on a project funded by the National Science Foundation with a goal of unifying the Artificial Intelligence (AI) course around the theme of machine learning. Our work involves the development and testing of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics that emphasizes the relationship between AI and computer science. Several hands-on laboratory projects that can be closely integrated into an introductory AI course have been developed. We present an overview of one of the projects and describe the associated curricular materials that have been developed. The project uses machine learning as …

Work In Progress: The Five Basic “Positions” Of Engineering, Blair London, Lisa Deyo Oct 2006

Work In Progress: The Five Basic “Positions” Of Engineering, Blair London, Lisa Deyo

Materials Engineering

Classical ballet technique relies on mastery of the five basic positions of the feet. Every movement in classical ballet goes through one or more of these positions. The positions are practiced in class, used in choreography, and become second nature in performance on stage. Engineering may have a similar context. These engineering “positions” are not just the foundational coursework leading up to an engineering degree such as mathematics, chemistry, or physics. Rather, the positions are aspects of engineering that a practicing engineer routinely does to successfully perform as engineers. The engineering positions discussed are: question, analyze, team, write, and speak. …

Templated Synthesis Of Gold-Iron Alloy Nanoparticles Using Pulsed Laser Deposition, Won-Suk Chang, Jin-Won Park, Vijay Rawat, Timothy D. Sands, Gil U. Lee Oct 2006

Templated Synthesis Of Gold-Iron Alloy Nanoparticles Using Pulsed Laser Deposition, Won-Suk Chang, Jin-Won Park, Vijay Rawat, Timothy D. Sands, Gil U. Lee

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A means for synthesizing paramagnetic nanoparticles composed of an Au-Fe alloy is described using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of the alloy into a mesoporous alumina membrane template. Nanoparticles 46 +/- 13 nm in diameter and composed of a 17% Fe alloy have been created by depositing a 35% Fe alloy into a template with 65 nm diameter pores. These paramagnetic nanoparticles had a saturation magnetization of 11.5 emu g(-1) at 2000 G, and their UV-visible extinction spectrum was dominated by strong absorption similar to that of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The surfaces of these nanoparticles were readily functionalized with a dense monolayer …

Radial Velocity Observations Of The Extended Lunar Sodium Tail, E. J. Mierkiewicz, M. Line, F. L. Roesler, R. J. Oliversen

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

We report the first velocity resolved sodium 5889.950 Å line profile observations of the lunar sodium tail observed in the anti-lunar direction near new Moon. These observations were made on 29 March 2006, 27 April 2006 and 28 April 2006 from Pine Bluff (WI) observatory with a double etalon Fabry-Perot spectrometer at a resolving power of ∼80,000. The observations were made within 2–14 hours from new Moon, pointing near the anti-lunar point. The average observed radial velocity of the lunar sodium tail in the vicinity of the anti-lunar point for the three nights reported was 12.4 km s−1 (from …

This paper uses a Case Study method to examine the phenomena of cultural change within Commercial Fishing Communities (CFCs). Points of discussion include some of the basic principles of entrepreneurship such as risk, succession, and benefit to communities. Included is a focal discussion that reflects on past business models in comparison to newer possible models that detail the potential for extending the participation of family fishing business through innovation and diversity. A primary objective of this paper is to determine if alternate methods to govern a natural recourse are viable. This includes research of the effect of past, present, and …

Spitzer White Dwarf Planet Limits, F. Mullally, Ted Von Hippel, D. E. Winget Oct 2006

Spitzer White Dwarf Planet Limits, F. Mullally, Ted Von Hippel, D. E. Winget

Publications

We present preliminary limits on the presence of planets around white dwarf stars using the IRAC photometer on the Spitzer space telescope. Planets emit strongly in the mid-infrared which allows their presence to be detected as an excess at these wavelengths. We place limits of 5 MJ for 8 stars assuming ages of 1 Gyr, and 10 MJ for 23 stars. We describe our survey, present our results and comment on approaches to improve our methodology.

Scalable Load And Store Processing In Latency Tolerant Processors, Amit Vasant Gandhi Oct 2006

Scalable Load And Store Processing In Latency Tolerant Processors, Amit Vasant Gandhi

Dissertations and Theses

Memory latency-tolerant architectures support thousands of in-flight instructions without proportionate scaling of cycle-critical processor resources, and thousands of useful instructions can complete in parallel with a long-latency miss to memory. These architectures, however, require large queues to track all loads and stores executed while a long-latency miss is pending. Hierarchical designs alleviate cycle-time impact of these structures but the Content-Addressable-Memory (CAM) and search functions required to enforce memory ordering and provide data-forwarding place high demand on area and power.

Many recent proposals address the complexity of load and store queues. However, none of these proposals addresses the fundamental source of …

Hit And Miss: Leverage, Sacrifice, And Refusal To Deal In The Supreme Court Decision In Trinko, Nicholas Economides Oct 2006

Hit And Miss: Leverage, Sacrifice, And Refusal To Deal In The Supreme Court Decision In Trinko, Nicholas Economides

ExpressO

Under the rules of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, incumbent local exchange carriers, including Verizon, were obligated to lease parts of their local telecommunications network to any firm at “cost plus a reasonable profit” prices which could combine them at will, add retailing services and sell local telecommunication service as a rival to the incumbent. AT&T, an entrant in local telecommunications, leased parts of Verizon’s network. Trinko, a local telecommunications services customer of AT&T, sued Verizon alleging various anti-competitive actions of Verizon against AT&T, including that Verizon raised the costs of AT&T, its downstream retail rival. The Supreme Court held …

Panel 2: Corruption And The Private Sector: Is Money Laundering The New Corrupt Foreign Practices?, Richard Charlton, Janet Dine, Michael Malloy, André Odermatt, Carol Van Cleef

McGeorge School of Law Global Center for Business and Development Annual Symposium

This roundtable of practitioners, regulators, and experts will consider the following issues:

  • Does corruption matter in today’s globalized economy?
  • Do current regulatory responses deter or contain corruption?
  • How far should we “rethink” corruption?

Panel 1: Defining Corruption: Do We Know It When We See It? Do We See It Where It Is Not?, Daniel Kaufmann, Jun Qian, Franklin Zimring Oct 2006

Panel 1: Defining Corruption: Do We Know It When We See It? Do We See It Where It Is Not?, Daniel Kaufmann, Jun Qian, Franklin Zimring

McGeorge School of Law Global Center for Business and Development Annual Symposium

This panel will undertake both a doctrinal and functional examination of what conduct should be condemned as corruption. This will include use of theoretical models, empirical studies and historical examples to evaluate the impact of various conduct sometimes condemned as corruption and other times argued to be harmless.
