Numerical Study Of The Quasinormal Mode Excitation Of Kerr Black Holes, Ernst Nils Dorband, Emanuele Berti, Peter Diener, Erik Schnetter, Manuel Tiglio Oct 2006

Numerical Study Of The Quasinormal Mode Excitation Of Kerr Black Holes, Ernst Nils Dorband, Emanuele Berti, Peter Diener, Erik Schnetter, Manuel Tiglio

Faculty Publications

We present numerical results from three-dimensional evolutions of scalar perturbations of Kerr black holes. Our simulations make use of a high-order accurate multiblock code which naturally allows for adapted grids and smooth inner (excision) and outer boundaries. We focus on the quasinormal ringing phase, presenting a systematic method for extraction of the quasinormal mode frequencies and amplitudes and comparing our results against perturbation theory. The detection of a single mode in a ringdown waveform allows for a measurement of the mass and spin of a black hole; a multimode detection would allow a test of the Kerr nature of the …

Methods For Fabricating Lenses At The End Of Optical Fibers In The Far Field Of The Fiber Aperture, Nicholas Djeu Oct 2006

Methods For Fabricating Lenses At The End Of Optical Fibers In The Far Field Of The Fiber Aperture, Nicholas Djeu

USF Patents

A microlens is affixed in the far field of an optical fiber to spatially transform a beam either entering or exiting the fiber. In a first embodiment, a droplet of photo polymer is placed on the end of an optical fiber and the fiber is spun to create an artificial gravity. The droplet is cured by UV radiation during the spinning. In a second embodiment, nanoparticles are mixed into the droplet to increase the refractive index of the photo polymer. A third embodiment employs artificial gravity to attach a microsphere to the end of the optical fiber. A fourth embodiment …

Universal Chloroplast Integration And Expression Vectors, Transformed Plants And Products Thereof, Henry Daniell Oct 2006

Universal Chloroplast Integration And Expression Vectors, Transformed Plants And Products Thereof, Henry Daniell

UCF Patents

The invention provides universal chloroplast integration and expression vectors which are competent to stably transform and integrate genes of interest into chloroplast genome of multiple species of plants. Transformed plants and their progeny are provided. Monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants are transformed which have never been transformed heretofore. Plants transformed with a synthetic gene express valuable biodegradable protein-based polymers (PBPs). Transformed plants produce high value molecules. Resistance is provided to agricultural crops against the major classes of chemical herbicides. Herbicide resistance is used as a lethal selectable marker for chloroplast transformation. The transformed plants are capable of expressing in addition to …

Social Security And The Stock Market: How The Pursuit Of Market Magic Shapes The System, Alicia Haydock Munnell, Steven A. Sass Oct 2006

Social Security And The Stock Market: How The Pursuit Of Market Magic Shapes The System, Alicia Haydock Munnell, Steven A. Sass

Upjohn Press

Munnell and Sass explore whether equities could help solve the woes facing the U.S. retirement income system in general, and the Social Security shortfall in particular. They examine the experiences of three nations that added equities to the investment mix of their retirement systems—the U.K., Australia, and Canada. As these experiences show, while equities promise higher returns than government bonds, how they are implemented—as add-ons, carve-outs, or as trust fund supplements—matters greatly.

Recall And Recognition Of Brand-Modified Product Placement In Movies, Caitlin Anderson Oct 2006

Recall And Recognition Of Brand-Modified Product Placement In Movies, Caitlin Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the product placement industry has seen a significant boom. The growth of product placement continues as media seeks funding and branded products vie for increased audience attention. Because of the increased product placement, there are many studies that examine the attitudes towards product placement, the experiences and interpretations of brands post-product placement, the effects of product placement, and memory of product placement. However, while product placement is a popular trend, there are occasions when branded products are altered in movies and television (this thesis refers to the altered products as “brand-modified products”). Little, if any, research has …

Assessing Ecological Correlates Of Avian Disease Prevalence In The Galapagos Islands Using Gis And Remote Sensing, Shane Robert Siers

Theses

In recognition of the potential consequences of pathogen introduction to the Galapagos Islands, the Saint Louis Zoo and the University of Missouri¿Saint Louis, in cooperation with the Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station, implemented an avian disease surveillance program in 2001, with the objective of identifying and monitoring for pathogens that pose risk for native bird populations. The purpose of this thesis is identify environmental factors that might influence the geographic distribution of avian pathogen infection, based on two data sets obtained as a result of these surveillance efforts: 1) seroprevalence data on 10 common poultry …

Perbankan Syariah Dan Perbankan Berdasarkan Bunga: Manakah Yang Lebih Optimal?, Tarsidin Tarsidin, Perry Warjiyo

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Unlike the conventional interest-base bank, the Islamic banks use both equity financing with profit sharing and debt-like financing with mark-up, ad at the funding side they use both investment scheme with revenue sharing and deposit scheme with rewards. The conventional bank use debt financing with interest and at the funding side use the deposit scheme with interest as well. The optimality of the two banking systems will be tested to determine which one is more optimal in terms of the wealth of the bank shareholder, the welfare of the entrepreneur, and the welfare of the depositors.Using a multiperiod static optimization …

Determinan Bank Runs Pada Krisis Perbankan 1997/1998: Suatu Kajian Dengan Menggunakan Panel Data Dinamis, Iskandar Simorangkir

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

There are two main competing theories to explain bank runs. One argues that panics come primarily from lack of confidence on banking sector, originated for example, in the bankruptcy of a big bank. According to this argument, lack of confidence and asymmetric information problems from depositors would induce contagious or self-fulfiling prophecy of bank runs. The other argues that banking crises are part of a cycle that effects both the financial and real sector of the economy. In other words, bank runs is determined by bank fundamentals and economic fundamentals.Using monthly panel data information on Indonesian banks this paper attemps …
