Realism And Transnationalism: Competing Visions For International Security, Nathan A. Canestaro

This paper is a multidisciplinary study of two competing theories of states’ motives and behavior in international relations, realism and transnationalism. The first theory, realism, suggests that states are constantly competing for security and power within an anarchical international system incapable of preventing aggression or conflict. A competing philosophy, transnationalism, (also known as liberalism) suggests that cooperation, not competition, is the defining characteristic of international relations and that democratization and global economic interdependence reduce the benefits of interstate conflict and encourage long-term cooperation.

Scrolls of Love is a book of unions. Edited by a Jew and a Christian who are united by a shared passion for the Bible and a common literary hermeneutic, it joins two biblical scrolls and gathers around them a diverse community of interpreters. It brings together Ruth and the Song of Songs, two seemingly disparate texts of the Hebrew Bible, and reads them through a number of the methodological and theological perspectives.

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Wedge-cut samples of fatigued ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate ceramics were investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy in conjunction with conventional electrical hysteresis measurements. The local clamping of domains is monitored at different depths in the sample. The coercive fields in grains near the electrodes differ for different materials and preparation methods of the electrodes. For silver, fatigue consistently generates a space charge in the depth of the sample. For platinum electrodes, the fatigue behavior scatters strongly. Microscopically, it either occurs directly underneath the electrodes or resembles the behavior of the silver electrodes in other samples.

The charge transport properties of the low-dimensional thermoelectric materials K₂Bi_8-xSb_xSe₁₃ (02Bi_8-xSb_xSe₁₃ was analyzed on the basis of the classical semiconductor theory and discussed in the context of recent band calculations. The results suggest that the K₂Bi_8-xSb_xSe₁₃ materials possess coexisting domains with semimetallic and semiconducting characters whose ratio is influenced by the value of x and by local defects. Are magnet schools in a position to meet diversity ideals? As districts are declaredunitary and released from court ordered desegregation, many are framing their commitments to fairness and equity in terms of diversity—i.e., comparable rates of participation and comparable educational outcomes in all segments the student population.
