Mechanism Of Neuronal Injury In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Uzma Usman, Mohammad Wasay Nov 2006

Mechanism Of Neuronal Injury In Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, Uzma Usman, Mohammad Wasay

Department of Medicine

The impact of CVT on the brain is wide spectrum, ranging from completely normal parenchyma to brain oedema and/or haemorrhage. Multiple factors relate to neuronal injury in CVT including; dural sinus pressure, increased venous flow velocities, collateralization of venous channels, rate of occlusion, development of cytotoxic and vasogenic oedema, recanalization and accelerated myelination. It is suggested that recanalization of occluded vein, as well as, the presence or absence and the efficiency of intracranial venous collaterals, may have an impact on the extent of brain tissue damage and hence the prognosis of acute CVT.

Complications Associated With Cerebral Venous Thrombosis., Fazeel Mukhtar Siddiqui,, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal Nov 2006

Complications Associated With Cerebral Venous Thrombosis., Fazeel Mukhtar Siddiqui,, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal

Department of Medicine

Although CVT is associated with a good outcome in the majority of cases, it may be complicated by numerous unique and sometimes rare complications. The purpose of this review is to discuss the acute and chronic complications of CVT in greater detail. Awareness may lead to a more aggressive approach in those in which these complications are anticipated and perhaps avoided.
The complications of CVT may be temporally divided into those unique to the acute stage and those that are associated with the chronic stage of CVT. They are venous infarction and haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, a rapid progression and pulmonary …

Heparin In The Treatment Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis., Saad Shafqat, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal, Mohammad Wasay Nov 2006

Heparin In The Treatment Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis., Saad Shafqat, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal, Mohammad Wasay

Department of Medicine

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a potentially life-threatening condition requiring rapid diagnosis and urgent treatment. Heparin anticoagulation is the time-honoured treatment, and is advocated in all cases of CVT, irrespective of etiology or presence of haemorrhage. The supportive evidence is largely observational; data from randomized placebo-controlled trials shows a nonsignificant trend favouring heparin. Current practice is to begin heparin (unfractionated or low-molecular weight) immediately on confirmation of the diagnosis. Newer antithrombotic agents such as ximelagatran may offer advantages over heparin and need to be investigated in the treatment of CVT.

Pathophysiology Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis--An Overview., Ahmed Itrat, Sana Shoukat, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal Nov 2006

Pathophysiology Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis--An Overview., Ahmed Itrat, Sana Shoukat, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal

Department of Medicine

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a disorder with a unique pathophysiology which needs to be described. A Medline search of all articles detailing pathophysiology of CVST was done, using keywords: cerebral venous thrombosis and pathophysiology. In addition, major texts were reviewed for additional references. The pathophysiology of CVST depends on two interconnected events, local signs due to venous infarct, e.g., hemiparesis and global signs due to raised ICP from an obstructed venous system--papilloedema and isolated intracranial hypertension being one of them. Pathophysiology of CVST is diverse and makes it easier to understand the diversity of clinical presentations.

Incidence And Epidemiology Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis., Fazeel Mukhtar Siddiqui, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal Nov 2006

Incidence And Epidemiology Of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis., Fazeel Mukhtar Siddiqui, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal

Department of Medicine

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a disorder whose epidemiology has changed over the past few decades. It is no longer regarded as a uniformly fatal disease. CVST is not a rare disorder. It may have a differential geographic distribution with a higher incidence in the Asian world. It is a disease of neonates, younger women and men, often a hypercoagulable state, either acquired (e.g., cancer) or a genetic prothrombotic condition may be present. Outcome is not uniformly dismal and prognostic criteria that detect patients with a poor outcome have become available from prospective studies. There is a paucity of well …

Massive Unilateral Chylous Pleural Effusion: A Rare Initial Presentation Of Behcet's Disease., Husain Husain S J, Nov 2006

Massive Unilateral Chylous Pleural Effusion: A Rare Initial Presentation Of Behcet's Disease., Husain Husain S J,

Department of Medicine

Pulmonary manifestations of Behcet's disease are not very common and usually include pulmonary artery aneurysms, central venous thrombosis, pneumonia and pleurisy. Chylothorax secondary to superior vena caval obstruction is a rare complication and has been reported in only a few cases. We report a case of a 24-year-old man presenting with massive chylothorax as the initial presentation of Behcet's disease that was successfully treated conservatively.

Unit Testing Considered Useful, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer, Benjamin Gonzalez

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Testing is an important part of application development. Hardware engineers, in particular, have a long established history of testing for the obvious reason that it's awfully hard to rebuild a microprocessor every time a bug pops up in the design stage--not to mention the enormous headaches such bugs generate on the software side.

Abuse Prevention 2005, James J. White Nov 2006

Abuse Prevention 2005, James J. White

Missouri Law Review

The 2005 amendments to the Bankruptcy Code (BAPCPA or Act) that became effective in October of 2005 had an unusually long and difficult gestation. The legislation was conceived and even passed by Congress once during the Clinton administration. After President Clinton's pocket veto, the Act did not again reach a President's desk until President George W. Bush signed the Act into law on April 20, 2005, during the first year of his second term. The Act was conceived by institutional unsecured consumer creditors as the antidote to the rapidly rising number of consumer bankruptcies that followed the enactment of the …

Bankruptcy Reform: What's Tax Got To Do With It, Michelle Arnopol Cecil Nov 2006

Bankruptcy Reform: What's Tax Got To Do With It, Michelle Arnopol Cecil

Missouri Law Review

On April 20, 2005, President Bush signed into law the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 ("BAPCPA"), the most sweeping bankruptcy reform legislation passed by Congress in over a quarter of a century. The bill, which spanned over 600 pages, completelyoverhauled the consumer bankruptcy system and made significant changes to business bankruptcies as well. Yet despite Congress's massive effort to improve the current bankruptcy system in BAPCPA, it failed to address a number of important issues in the area of bankruptcy taxation, a critical but often overlooked area of bankruptcy law. One such issue involves the tax …

Bankruptcy Reform And The Costs Of Sickness: Exploring The Intersections, Melissa B. Jacoby Nov 2006

Bankruptcy Reform And The Costs Of Sickness: Exploring The Intersections, Melissa B. Jacoby

Missouri Law Review

Two important developments in the personal bankruptcy system unfolded over the course of the last several years: lawmakers considered and ultimately passed an omnibus bankruptcy bill, and researchers began to delve more broadly and deeply into medical-related financial distress among bankruptcy filers. Drawing on prior scholarship, this article contributes to this symposium by considering what, if anything, these developments have to do with one another. Part I briefly reviews two recent empirical studies of bankruptcy filers and the findings they produced. Although these findings may not have had discrete prescriptive implications for bankruptcy reform, they have contributed to a more …

Race Matters In Bankruptcy Reform, A. Mechele Dickerson Nov 2006

Race Matters In Bankruptcy Reform, A. Mechele Dickerson

Missouri Law Review

On April 20, 2005, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of ("BAPCPA") was signed into law and became fully effective for cases filed on or after October 17, 2005. 4 After considering bankruptcy reform for almost a decade, Congress ultimately concluded that some debtors were abusing bankruptcy laws by, among other things, discharging debts they had the means to pay. To curb this perceived abuse, Congress decided to radically overhaul the consumer provisions of the Code by generally making it harder for an opportunistic or "Abusive Debtor" to discharge his debts. Given the sweeping nature of these changes, …

Potential And Peril Of Bapcpa For Empirical Research, The, Katherine Porter Nov 2006

Potential And Peril Of Bapcpa For Empirical Research, The, Katherine Porter

Missouri Law Review

This article surveys the history of bankruptcy data and identifies the BAPCPA provisions that bear directly on research. It concludes by examining how such studies will and should proceed. BAPCPA provides both opportunities and hazards to advance our understanding of bankruptcy. The development of comprehensive federal data offers the potential to dramatically increase the scope of knowledge about the bankruptcy system. The peril lies in the government conducting its research without the transparency and accountability necessary to convince private industry, academic scholars, and the general public of the integrity and usefulness of these data. Rather than eclipsing academic research, the …

Judicial Discretion To Find Abuse Under Section 707(B)(3), Eugene R. Wedoff Nov 2006

Judicial Discretion To Find Abuse Under Section 707(B)(3), Eugene R. Wedoff

Missouri Law Review

This article suggests the contrary - that if a section 707(b) motion properly raises the question, a bankruptcy judge has a duty to consider the actual financial situation of a debtor who is not subject to a means test presumption; that the judge should find abuse where the debtor can repay a sufficient amount of unsecured debt; and that the means test serves to guide, rather than foreclose, such determinations of abuse. Part I discusses the language of BAPCPA that requires this result, focusing on the nature of the means test as a presumption. Part II examines (and finds wanting) …

Totality Of The Circumstances Of The Debtor's Financial Situation In Post-Means Test World: Trying To Bridge The Wedoff/Culhane & White Divide, The, John A. E. Pottow

Missouri Law Review

Bankruptcy Judge Eugene Wedoff and Creighton Law School professors Marianne Culhane and Michaela White engage in a spirited debate over a series of law review articles about the proper scope of motions to dismiss a debtor's petition under section 707(b) of the freshly revised Bankruptcy Code. It is an interesting and provocative dialogue, with both sides advancing their respective positions persuasively. As a result, I find myself in the unfortunate position of wanting to agree with both. Since that is impossible, however, this brief article is my attempt to find a middle ground between their two positions. It does so …

Good In Theory, Bad In Practice: The Unintended Consequences Of Bapcpa's Credit Counseling Requirement, Katherine A. Jeter-Boldt Nov 2006

Good In Theory, Bad In Practice: The Unintended Consequences Of Bapcpa's Credit Counseling Requirement, Katherine A. Jeter-Boldt

Missouri Law Review

On April 20, 2005, after nearly a decade of lobbying by the credit industry, President Bush signed the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA). The publicly stated goal of BAPCPA was to make bankruptcy less desirable so that debtors would stop abusing the protections of the Bankruptcy Code. Although Congress was motivated by laudable intentions, it is clear that BAPCPA contains at least one good idea that does not work in practice - the credit counseling requirement. Under BAPCPA, a debtor must receive credit counseling before filing for bankruptcy. Not only did Congress fail to instruct judges on the …

Right To Rest In Peace: Missouri Prohibits Protesting At Funerals, The, Megan Dunn Nov 2006

Right To Rest In Peace: Missouri Prohibits Protesting At Funerals, The, Megan Dunn

Missouri Law Review

The Westboro Baptist Church, led by Fred Phelps and based in Topeka, Kansas, has received national attention since the early 1990s, when members of this vehemently anti-homosexual group began actively protesting events involving prominent homosexual people. Eventually, these protests grew to include people who were even marginally supportive of homosexuality. While these protests incited outrage among various groups of people, no widespread effort was made to limit the group's ability to protest at such events. In 2005, however, the group expanded its targets to include military funerals, maintaining that God was killing soldiers in Iraq because of His displeasure with …

Residential Privacy And Free Speech: Competing Interests In Charitable Solicitation Regulation, Marcus Wilbers Nov 2006

Residential Privacy And Free Speech: Competing Interests In Charitable Solicitation Regulation, Marcus Wilbers

Missouri Law Review

Although these two quotations represent society's mixed feelings toward charity, they also represent a distinction people often make between a charity's aims and its means. Charitable organizations have the potential to spread hope, re-allocate societal resources, and advocate societal values. How they go about accomplishing these noble goals, however, is sometimes the subject of public frustration and annoyance. This creates a tension between admiring the charity's philanthropy and becoming irritated with the means used to achieve it. Undoubtedly, one of the most unwelcome guests in any household is a telemarketer. In fact, 98% of 1.78 million respondents to a recent …

Standing On Hallowed Ground: Should The Federal Judiciary Monitor Executive Violations Of The Establishment Clause, Bradley Thomas Wilders Nov 2006

Standing On Hallowed Ground: Should The Federal Judiciary Monitor Executive Violations Of The Establishment Clause, Bradley Thomas Wilders

Missouri Law Review

This Note argues that the Seventh Circuit reached the correct result. However, there is little logic in continuing to limit Establishment Clause adjudications to plaintiffs who can show injury-in-fact or, absent such injury, plaintiffs who can claim the allegedly unconstitutional act was an exercise of the Taxing and Spending Clause. Instead, because the Establishment Clause is a unique structural restraint which separates the government from organized religion4 and prohibits government support of religion that divides the political process along religious lines, this Note concludes that standing to sue for Establishment Clause violations should be extended to acts of any government …

Choice Of Currency By East Asia Bond Issuers, David Fernandez, Simon Klassen Nov 2006

Choice Of Currency By East Asia Bond Issuers, David Fernandez, Simon Klassen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In discussing bond markets in Asia, academics and policymakers typically begin by noting that the Asian crisis of 1997-98 in part resulted from the underdevelopment of the region’s domestic bond markets and the resultant currency and duration mismatches. When assessing the progress made in developing these markets in the post-crisis years, academics and policymakers usually observe that, while several domestic currency government bond markets have moved ahead, corporate bond markets have lagged (Asian Development Bank (2002), Reserve Bank of Australia (2003)). The policy conclusion is therefore often drawn: to prevent another Asian crisis, Asian bond markets must be further developed.

A Typology Of Plants In Global Manufacturing Networks, Ann Vereecke, Roland Van Dierdonck, Arnoud De Meyer Nov 2006

A Typology Of Plants In Global Manufacturing Networks, Ann Vereecke, Roland Van Dierdonck, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new, empirically derived typology of plants in the international manufacturing network of multinational companies. This typology is based on the knowledge flows between the plants. In our research, network analysis has been used as a methodology for understanding the position of plants in international manufacturing networks. The focus has been primarily on the intangible knowledge network, and secondarily on the physical, logistic network. Our analysis leads to four types of plants with different network roles: the isolated plants, the receivers, the hosting network players, and the active network players. Our analysis …

Linking Brand Equity To Customer Equity, Robert P. Leone, Vithala R. Rao, Kevin Lane Keller, Anita Man Luo, Leigh Mcalister, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Customer equity and brand equity are two of the most important topics to academic researchers and practitioners. As part of the 2005 Thought Leaders Conference held at the University of Connecticut, the authors were asked to review what was known and not known about the relationship between brand equity and customer equity. During their discussions, it became clear that whereas two distinct research streams have emerged and there are distinct differences, the concepts are also highly related. It also became clear that whereas the focus of both brand equity and customer equity research has been on the end consumer, there …

Reflection In Action: Constructive Narratives Of Experience, Nilofar Vazir Nov 2006

Reflection In Action: Constructive Narratives Of Experience, Nilofar Vazir

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper examines narratives of experience from teachers’ lives. It locates teachers as academic constructors of knowledge and uses the cases of reflective practice and inquiry in the development of self‐knowledge. I explore teachers knowledge in light of my own understanding from literature, research findings on beginning teachers, reflections on my personal experiences; my development as a teacher overseas and in my country Pakistan. Most importantly as self‐reflection I offer Pakistan’s move to construct professional knowledge and my own attempt as a teacher educator to aspire towards that goal.

A Pakistani Teacher Educator’S Self-Study Of Teaching Self-Study Research, Ayesha Bashiruddin Nov 2006

A Pakistani Teacher Educator’S Self-Study Of Teaching Self-Study Research, Ayesha Bashiruddin

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper describes a teacher educator’s self-study of work with her M.Ed. students at a private international university in Pakistan. This systematic inquiry highlights changes and improvements in teaching drawn from experiences of practice based on autobiographies. Analysis shows that improvement in teaching came from the author’s learning through self-study. Analysis also reveals implications for teacher educators and teacher education in general.

National Security And Immigration Policy: Reclaiming Terms, Measuring Success, And Setting Priorities, Margaret D. Stock Oct 2006

National Security And Immigration Policy: Reclaiming Terms, Measuring Success, And Setting Priorities, Margaret D. Stock

ExpressO

This paper offers a three-pronged framework for evaluating immigration-related security measures and tactics. First, does the measure or strategy relate to a legitimate security goal? Second, what does the measure propose to accomplish, will it be successful in achieving that end, and how can its success (or failure) be assessed? Third, is the measure worth the cost both in resources and opportunities foregone? The paper goes on to evaluate the US Government's recent implementation of the US-VISIT program against this framework.
