Defining (Multiple) Selves: Reflections On Fieldwork In Jakarta, Chang Yau Hoon
Defining (Multiple) Selves: Reflections On Fieldwork In Jakarta, Chang Yau Hoon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The 'Self' in late-modernity is never singular but multiplies across different discourses, practices and positions. It is constructed through difference. It is only through a relation to the 'Other' that the 'Self' can be defined. This paper endeavours to map the endless negotiations of my 'Self' as male Australian academic of Chinese descent, a Malaysian citizen, a Bruneian resident, and an Indonesian specialist, over a period of fieldwork in Jakarta in 2004. It discusses how I defined my multiple 'Selves' to different individuals and communities, how they in turn defined me, and how these constructions were always shifting. Depending on …
Effects Of Novel Synthetic Nucleosides As Anti-Tumor Agents On Human Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Cell Line (Hl-60), Salma Awad Merghani Mahmoud
Effects Of Novel Synthetic Nucleosides As Anti-Tumor Agents On Human Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Cell Line (Hl-60), Salma Awad Merghani Mahmoud
Theses
Nucleosides and their analogs are considered a clinically proven class of therapeutic agents possessing anticancer and antiviral activity. Several trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrazole N-nucleosides (coded NIA, NIIA and NIIA) and their nucleobases were synthesized and tested for the ability to induce apoptosis in acute human promyelocytic cell line (HL-60). The growth and proliferation of HL-60 was more effectively inhibited by NIA, NIIA and their nucleobases compared to NIIIA and its nucleobase. In addition, DNA fragmentation was detected in a concentration-dependent manner as a result of nucleosides treatment. A caspase-3-dependent apoptosis was observed based on the Western blot analysis of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) …

Hungary: Protection Of Ethnic Minorities And Institutional Balance, Anna Gwiazda, Kenneth Benoit
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
United in support for the EU constitution, the Hungarians none the less remember the past dismemberment of their country, as a result of which a significant number of Hungarian minorities live in neighboring countries. Hence, it was not surprising that the Hungarian government’s position at the IGC 2003–4 focused on the protection of minority rights, although institutional balance was also important. The only “exclusive” Hungarian proposal of the “protection of ethnic and national minorities” was supported by both the socialists and the opposition Fidesz–Hungarian Civic Party. Hungary joined the European Union on 1 May 2004. EU membership had been a …

Rights Of Culture, Rights Of Conscience, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this contribution I take up a particularly troubling issue in the theory of human rights. It is the issue of intervention to defend or uphold — or re-assert and re-establish — human rights. The issue is a troubling one because intervention in the affairs of others is always something we should be wary of, not least because history is full of unhappy episodes of intervention, from the Spanish in the Americas to the Chinese in Tibet. Indeed, so difficult and complex are the issues raised that one might be tempted in a discussion of human rights simply to separate …
Hayek And Liberalism, Chandran Kukathas
Hayek And Liberalism, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
F. A. Hayek occupies a peculiar place in the history of twentiethcentury liberalism. His influence has, in many respects, been enormous. The Road to Serfdom, his first political work, not onlyattracted popular attention in the west but also circulated widely(in samizdat form) in the intellectual underground of Eastern Europeduring the years between the end of the war and the revolutions of1989. His critique of central planning has been thoroughly vindicated, if not by the demise of communist economic systems, thenat least by the recognition by socialists of many stripes of theimportance of market processes.1 Books and articles on his thoughtcontinue …

Electronic transmission of text is a revolution in progress with a profound effect on engineering education. As with all revolutions, the result is both a threat and a promise. The promise is the ease and speed of dissemination of text. The threat involves serious difficulties that arise in efforts to protect the intellectual property rights of the authors and publishers of the technical information. In this paper, we discuss both the threat and the promise. We highlight the differences in dealing with books and with journals. We give a wide range of examples from both inside of and outside of …

Introducing Students To Communications Concepts Using Optical And Low-Power Wireless Devices, James M. Conrad, Ivan Howitt
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless communication has become an important feature for commercial products and a popular research topic within the last ten years. There are now more mobile phone subscriptions than wired-line subscriptions. Lately, one area of commercial interest has been low-cost, low-power, and short-distance wireless communication used for "personal wireless networks." Technology advancements are providing smaller and more cost effective devices for integrating computational processing, wireless communication, and a host of other functionalities. These embedded communications devices will be integrated into applications ranging from homeland security to industry automation and monitoring. They will also enable custom tailored engineering solutions, creating a revolutionary …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper highlights a unique approach to infusing formal training and practice in oral and written communication and teamwork development in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Utah. Faculty and graduate (Ph.D.) students from the College of Humanities have teamed up with faculty from engineering to develop communication and teamwork instruction that is integrated into the existing engineering curriculum. These skills are used as a vehicle to provide better understanding of engineering concepts and their applications.
Two, Three And Four-Dimensional Electromagnetics Using Differential Forms, Karl F. Warnick, Peter Russer
Two, Three And Four-Dimensional Electromagnetics Using Differential Forms, Karl F. Warnick, Peter Russer
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The exterior calculus of differential forms provides a mathematical framework for electromagnetic field theory that combines much of the generality of tensor analysis with the computational simplicity and concreteness of the vector calculus. We review the pedagogical aspects of the calculus of differential forms in providing distinct representations of field intensity and flux density, physically meaningful graphical representations for sources, fields, and fluxes, and a picture of the curl operation that is as simple and intuitive as that of the gradient and divergence. To further highlight the benefits of differential forms notation, we demonstrate the flexibility of the calculus of …

Secure Digital Communication Using Chaotic Symbolic Dynamics, Ajeesh P. Kurian, Sadasivan Puthusserypady
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the major hurdles in implementing chaotic communication schemes is the synchronization of chaotic systems. For the last two decades, numerous contributions of varying successes have been made by researchers from different disciplines for the synchronization of chaotic systems. Symbolic dynamics based synchronization method is shown to be capable of providing high quality synchronization (HQS), which is essential for reliable communication. In this work, using this method, a secure digital communication system is proposed. The well known piece-wise linear 1-D map such as tent map and Bernoulli shift map are used for this study. Since the information is dynamically …

Victimizing The Abused?: Is Termination The Solution When Domestic Violence Comes To Work?, Nicole Buonocore Porter

Domestic violence occurs in the workplace more frequently than one might presume. Workplace violence is the number one cause of death for women in the workplace in part because of domestic violence spillover, where an abuser harms his victim as well as any co-workers who try to intervene.
The conflict between domestic violence and the workplace is often exposed in its rawest state when a victim of domestic violence is considered to be a threat to the workplace by her employer.
The initial reaction of most people when hearing of [a] hypothetical [in which an employer fires a domestic violence …

The Green Costs Of Kelo: Economic Development Takings And Environmental Protection, Jonathan H. Adler, Ilya Somin

The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Kelo v. City of New London has rekindled the debate over “economic development” takings—condemnations that transfer property from one private owner to another solely on the ground that doing so might improve the local economy or increase tax revenue. While such takings have been condemned by many commentators on both the right and the left, environmentalists have been notably absent among Kelo’s critics. Some environmentalists have even defended the Kelo decision and the use of eminent domain to spur private economic development. At the same time, scholarly commentary on Kelo and other economic …
Private Conscience, Public Duties: The Unavoidable Conflicts Facing A Catholic Justice, Scott C. Idleman
Private Conscience, Public Duties: The Unavoidable Conflicts Facing A Catholic Justice, Scott C. Idleman
Faculty Publications
When questioned about the relationship between their faith and their decision making, Catholic judges typically invoke a model of detachment, pursuant to which their governmental role and responsibilities are not directly governed by, and thus do not readily conflict with, their potential duties as a faithful Catholic. This position of detachment has been expressed both during confirmation hearings and in situations where judges are asked to remove themselves from a case due to their religious beliefs or affiliation. This article addresses the possibility that this position is potentially at odds with Catholic Church doctrine regarding the obligations of civil officials. …
