Development Of A Mix Design Methodology For Asphalt Mixtures With Analytically Formulated Aggregate Structures, Khalid Salim Alshamsi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research documents an extensive study on the design and characterization of asphalt mixtures for use as road pavement material. Several aspects of asphalt mixtures were addressed using the state of the art laboratory test equipment and technical literature from different information sources. The research was divided into two phases. Phase one included the design and detailed analysis of compaction and performance characteristics of asphalt concrete mixtures with aggregate structures that were designed using an analytical method of aggregate blending. Three aggregate types were considered in this study: limestone, sandstone, and granite. All the aggregates were crushed aggregates. Three different …

Residue Coevolution: Modeling And Interpretation, Zhengyuan Wang Jan 2006

Residue Coevolution: Modeling And Interpretation, Zhengyuan Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coevolution between amino acid residues and its context-dependence are important for exploring protein structure and function, and critical for understanding protein structural and functional evolution. Coevolution has long been ignored because of its complexity and the lack of computing power. In the research presented here, I developed an efficient coevolution analysis methodology based on likelihood comparisons of statistical models. Likelihood ratios and Bayes factors, calculated using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, were employed as the statistics. Two types of models, 2-state and 3-state, were developed to allow for the context-dependence of coevolution. Computer programs implementing this methodology were coded …

Studies Of Pathogenesis-Related Proteins In The Strawberry Plant: Partial Purification Of A Chitinase-Containing Protein Complex And Analysis Of An Osmotin-Like Protein Gene, Yuhua Zhang Jan 2006

Studies Of Pathogenesis-Related Proteins In The Strawberry Plant: Partial Purification Of A Chitinase-Containing Protein Complex And Analysis Of An Osmotin-Like Protein Gene, Yuhua Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Plant chitinases and osmotin-like proteins (OLPs) are both pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins, which are implicated in plant responses to pathogen attacks and environmental stresses. In this dissertation, a chitinase-containing protein complex was purified to near homogeneity from strawberry leaf extracts. This protein complex contained at least five different chitinase molecules as revealed by activity gel assays. A previous study showed that winter rye leaves contain seven protein complexes, which consist of various combinations of a chitinase, two glucanase-like proteins (GLPs) and a thaumatin-like protein (TLP). Western blot analysis of the strawberry chitinase complex, however, did not detect the presence of any …

The Multiple Dimensions Of The Interfirm Network: The Critical Sources Of Product Innovation, Thongchai Srivardhana Jan 2006

The Multiple Dimensions Of The Interfirm Network: The Critical Sources Of Product Innovation, Thongchai Srivardhana

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the impacts of interfirm variables on both invention and commercialization activities, following Greve’s (2003) suggestion that innovation research will be enriched if more studies integrate invention and commercialization activities to understand the entire innovation development process. Utilizing two established theoretical perspectives—organizational learning and institutional theory—six sets of hypotheses are developed containing the following interfirm variables: 1) direct and indirect ties, 2) strength of direct ties, 3) structural holes, 4) prominence of direct partners, 5) exploration and exploitation partners, and 6) horizontal and vertical networks. The dissertation also predicts that these interfirm variables would contribute to either invention …

Resonance Pacemakers In Excitable Media, Tabitha Ruvarashe Chigwada, P. Parmananda, Kenneth Showalter Jan 2006

Resonance Pacemakers In Excitable Media, Tabitha Ruvarashe Chigwada, P. Parmananda, Kenneth Showalter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Chemical waves are initiated in an excitable medium by resonance with local periodic forcing of the excitability. Experiments are carried out with a photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky medium, in which the excitability is varied according to the intensity of the imposed illumination. Complex resonance patterns are exhibited as a function of the amplitude and frequency of the forcing. Local resonance-induced wave initiation transforms the medium globally from a quiescent excitable steady state to a periodic state of successive traveling waves.

Under Pressure: Controlling Factors Faced By Classroom Literacy Teachers As They Work Through A Professional Development Program, Faith H. Wallace Jan 2006

Under Pressure: Controlling Factors Faced By Classroom Literacy Teachers As They Work Through A Professional Development Program, Faith H. Wallace

Faculty Articles

This critical constructivist inquiry was designed to understand controlling factors faced by classroom literacy teachers involved in a professional development program. Two guiding questions framed this critical inquiry: (1) how can I describe controlling factors faced by teachers in their respective school cultures and (2) what is the resultant impact of these controlling factors on the teachers' classroom instruction. Findings indicated that participants felt pressure to conform to a particular school philosophy, but empowered themselves by solidifying their own philosophies of instruction.

Production Of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons At The Tevatron, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustin Sabio Vera Jan 2006

Production Of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons At The Tevatron, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustin Sabio Vera

Faculty Articles

We discuss the production of W bosons at large transverse momentum in p pbar collisions at the Tevatron Run I and II. W boson hadroproduction is a process of relevance in testing the Standard Model and in estimates of backgrounds to new physics. The next-to-leading order cross section in the region of large transverse momentum is dominated by threshold soft-gluon corrections which arise from incomplete cancellations near partonic threshold between graphs with real emission and virtual graphs due to the limited phase space available for real gluon emission. In this contribution it is shown how, by including next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon …

The Strength And Structure Of The Galactic Center Magnetic Field, Ted La Rosa, Steven N. Shore, T. Joseph W. Lazio, Namir E. Kassim Jan 2006

The Strength And Structure Of The Galactic Center Magnetic Field, Ted La Rosa, Steven N. Shore, T. Joseph W. Lazio, Namir E. Kassim

Faculty Articles

This paper summarizes recently obtained, strong evidence for a weak global field in the Galactic center (GC): the existence of a large-scale region of diffuse, low-frequency, nonthermal emission coincident with the central molecular zone. The overall energetics of this emission, considered along with constraints on GC cosmic ray energy density and diffusion, indicate clearly that the magnetic field pervading this region is ∼ 10 μG. For completeness, additional points on the orientation of the GC nonthermal filaments, rotation measures of extragalactic sources seen through the GC, and comparison with other normal spiral galaxies are also reviewed.

Integrated Circuit Metrology By Multilevel Patterning Technology, Li Jiang Jan 2006

Integrated Circuit Metrology By Multilevel Patterning Technology, Li Jiang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A low cost, high accuracy method is described in detail for measuring image placement in integrated circuit manufacture. The method measures both the overlay between levels and the absolute placement of features in a single level. The overlay is measured by a technique which views multiple levels separately. The absolute distances between features on a test wafer are measured by comparing the features to precision gratings. Optical imaging techniques are described for viewing and analyzing the grating images, as well as for measuring distortions in the observing microscope and a video camera. These techniques permit image placement measurements to be …

"The Sad (Or Angry) Lament:" An Exposition Of African American Struggles With Issues Of Gender In Relationships Depicted Through Works Of Literature., Bethany Joy Conner Jan 2006

"The Sad (Or Angry) Lament:" An Exposition Of African American Struggles With Issues Of Gender In Relationships Depicted Through Works Of Literature., Bethany Joy Conner

Honors Theses

African-American gender roles have traditionally been problematic in regards to studying the effects of traditional western nonns upon the black community. The purpose of this work is to elaborate on the particular difficulties that African-American women face when confronted with rigid social constraints in relationships (platonic, romantic, and familial). African- American fictitious literature is adept at depicting the many and varied subtleties and complexities of African-American female experiences in relationships and presents an intriguing slant to this topic. Thus, this work is mostly based upon fiction by African-American female writers who deal directly with the effects of African-American gender roles. …

Pharmacological Dissociation Of Anxiety Model In The Chick Separation Stress Paradigm, Robert Thomas Wicks Jan 2006

Pharmacological Dissociation Of Anxiety Model In The Chick Separation Stress Paradigm, Robert Thomas Wicks

Honors Theses

The chick separation stress paradigm has been validated as an anxiolytic screening assay. However, whether the paradigm better models Panic Disorder (PD) or Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is unknown. To pharmacologically dissociate the chick separation stress paradigm as a model of PD or GAD, subjects were administered drug probes that were either: 1) only effective in the treatment of PD (phenelzine 3.125-25.0 mg/kg), 2) effective in the treatment of both PD and GAD (alprazolam 0.065-0.5 mg/kg; clonidine 0.1-0.25 mg/kg; imipramine 1.0-15.0mg/kg), 3) only effective in the treatment of GAD (buspirone 2.5-10.0 mg/kg; trazodone 0.1-3.0 mg/kg), or 4) capable of exacerbating …

Country Is…The Portrayal Of Southern Culture In Country Music, Allison Ann Worley Jan 2006

Country Is…The Portrayal Of Southern Culture In Country Music, Allison Ann Worley

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the Image of the South and Its culture that Is presented to the public through country music, primarily contemporary, popular country music. The lyrics of several songs were analyzed to determine how they represent the South and its people. Songs were chosen based on their message, with a great deal of consideration being given to the popularity of each song. The thesis argues that country music presents a more positive South than most other media interpretations of the culture. That portrayal is quite complex, with often contradictory Ideas being contained within the various songs. As a whole, …
