Disciplining Service Learning: Institutionalization And The Case For Community Studies, Dan W. Butin Jan 2006

Disciplining Service Learning: Institutionalization And The Case For Community Studies, Dan W. Butin

Service Learning, General

This article argues that the service-learning field has been pursuing the wrong revolution. Namely, service learning has been envisioned as a transformative pedagogical practice and philosophical orientation that would change the fundamental policies and practices of the academy. However, its attempted institutionalization faces substantial barriers and positions service learning in an uncomfortable double-bind that ultimately co-opts and neutralizes its agenda. This article argues that a truly transformative agenda may be to create a parallel movement to develop an "academic home" for service learning within academic "community studies" programs. This "disciplining" of service learning is the truly revolutionary potential of institutionalizing …

Defining A Service-Learning Pedagogy Of Access And Success, Christine M. Cress Jan 2006

Defining A Service-Learning Pedagogy Of Access And Success, Christine M. Cress

Service Learning, General

Ask most college administrators how they define access and they would probably reply "inclusive opportunity." Ask most college faculty how they would identify a benchmark of success and they would probably reply "critical thinking skills." Indeed, our traditional notions of educational access and success tend to be either numerically delineated, "the number of entering or graduating students" or characterized as producing rationally oriented "leaders" and "citizens".

An Investment Prospectus: Strengthening Education And Democracy Through Service-Learning, W. K. Kellogg Foundation Jan 2006

An Investment Prospectus: Strengthening Education And Democracy Through Service-Learning, W. K. Kellogg Foundation

Service Learning, General

Service-learning has deep roots in many American reforms, traditions, and disciplines. The cooperative extension movement in higher education, the settlement house work of Jane Addams, the pedagogies of John Dewey, the freedom schools of the African-American community: all these types of experiential education have connected young people to their communities as does service-learning. Service-learning is a teaching method that engages young people in community problem-solving as part of their education, both in school and out-of-school settings.

Service-Learning In Watershed-Based Initiatives: Keys To Education For Sustainability In Geography?, James Eflin, Amy L. Sheaffer Jan 2006

Service-Learning In Watershed-Based Initiatives: Keys To Education For Sustainability In Geography?, James Eflin, Amy L. Sheaffer

Service Learning, General

A call for combining the strengths of geographic education with environmental education to produce an 'education for sustainability' addresses local problems for sustainable development. A place-based approach encourages civic responsibility among students. Using service-learning to extend education beyond the classroom in this case study connected students with local clients in a watershed-based initiative. Theoretical underpinnings of service-learning for geographic education are discussed, and the case study is viewed from instructor, student, and client perspectives to identify successful outcomes and provide suggestions for those who might adopt service-learning for the first time.

Feather Mites Are Positively Associated With Daily Survival In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Kathleen R. Brazeal, Stephanie A. Strickler, Mary Bomberger Brown

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Feather mites (Acari: Astigmata) have been reported to be parasitic, commensal, and even mutualis-tic on the birds that serve as their hosts. We investigated whether there was a relationship between number of feather mites (Pteronyssoides obscurus (Berlese, 1885)) on the wing and daily survival of cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota (Vieillot, 1817)) during the breeding season at 12 nesting colonies in Nebraska in 2005. Survival of birds with known mite loads was monitored by mark–recapture, and survival models with and without a linear effect of mites were compared with the program MARK. For adult swallows, mites were positively associated …

Matrix-J-Unitary Non-Commutative Rational Formal Power Series, Daniel Alpay, D. S. Kalyuzhnyi-Verbovetzkii Jan 2006

Matrix-J-Unitary Non-Commutative Rational Formal Power Series, Daniel Alpay, D. S. Kalyuzhnyi-Verbovetzkii

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Formal power series in N non-commuting indeterminates can be considered as a counterpart of functions of one variable holomorphic at 0, and some of their properties are described in terms of coefficients. However, really fruitful analysis begins when one considers for them evaluations on N-tuples of n × n matrices (with n = 1, 2, . . .) or operators on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space. Moreover, such evaluations appear in control, optimization and stabilization problems of modern system engineering.

In this paper, a theory of realization and minimal factorization of rational matrix-valued functions which are J-unitary on the imaginary …

Quantum Dynamics As An Analog Of Conditional Probability, Matthew S. Leifer Jan 2006

Quantum Dynamics As An Analog Of Conditional Probability, Matthew S. Leifer

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum theory can be regarded as a noncommutative generalization of classical probability. From this point of view, one expects quantum dynamics to be analogous to classical conditional probabilities. In this paper, a variant of the well-known isomorphism between completely positive maps and bipartite density operators is derived, which makes this connection much more explicit. This isomorphism is given an operational interpretation in terms of statistical correlations between ensemble preparation procedures and outcomes of measurements. Finally, the isomorphism is applied to elucidate the connection between no-cloning and no-broadcasting theorems and the monogamy of entanglement, and a simplified proof of the no-broadcasting …

Conditional Density Operators And The Subjectivity Of Quantum Operations, Matthew S. Leifer Jan 2006

Conditional Density Operators And The Subjectivity Of Quantum Operations, Matthew S. Leifer

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Assuming that quantum states, including pure states, represent subjective degrees of belief rather than objective properties of systems, the question of what other elements of the quantum formalism must also be taken as subjective is addressed. In particular, we ask this of the dynamical aspects of the formalism, such as Hamiltonians and unitary operators. Whilst some operations, such as the update maps corresponding to a complete projective measurement, must be subjective, the situation is not so clear in other cases. Here, it is argued that all trace preserving completely positive maps, including unitary operators, should be regarded as subjective, in …

A Conversation Among Deans, Katharine T. Bartlett, Edward Rubin, W. H. Knight Jan 2006

A Conversation Among Deans, Katharine T. Bartlett, Edward Rubin, W. H. Knight

Faculty Scholarship

On March 10, 2006, the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, and Harvard Law Review co-sponsored a conference, "Results: Legal Education, Institutional Change, and a Decade of Gender Studies," to address the number of student experience studies that detail women's lower performance in and dissatisfaction with law school. Rather than advocate for a particular set of responses to the different experiences of men and women in legal education , this conference sought to foster a discussion about the institutional challenges these patterns highlight. As a means of accomplishing this end, law school deans from …

The Design Of An Undergraduate Degree Program In Computer & Digital Forensics, Gary C. Kessler, Michael E. Schirling Jan 2006

The Design Of An Undergraduate Degree Program In Computer & Digital Forensics, Gary C. Kessler, Michael E. Schirling

Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach

"Champlain College formally started an undergraduate degree program in Computer & Digital Forensics in 2003. The underlying goals were that the program be multidisciplinary, bringing together the law, computer technology, and the basics of digital investigations; would be available as on online and oncampus offering; and would have a process-oriented focus. Success of this program has largely been due to working closely with practitioners, maintaining activity in events related to both industry and academia, and flexibility to respond to ever-changing needs. This paper provides an overview of how this program was conceived, developed, and implemented; its evolution over time; and …

Handling The Subclassing Anomaly With Object Teams, Jeff Furlong, Atanas Radenski Jan 2006

Handling The Subclassing Anomaly With Object Teams, Jeff Furlong, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Existing Java software or libraries can evolve via subclassing. Unfortunately, subclassing may not properly support code adaptation when there are dependencies between classes. More precisely, subclassing in collections of related classes may require reimplementation of otherwise valid classes. This problem is defined as the subclassing anomaly, which is an issue when software evolution or code reuse is a goal of the programmer who is using existing classes. Object Teams offers an implicit fix to this problem and is largely compatible with the existing JVM’s. In this paper, we evaluate how well Object Teams succeeds in providing a solution for a …

Proposed Statement On Quality Control Standards : A Firm's System Of Quality Control;Firm's System Of Quality Control; Exposure Draft (American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants), 2006, July 28, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Auditing Standards Board

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

The proposed SQCS defines the engagement quality control review (often referred to as a concurring review), and requires firms to establish criteria to determine which engagements are to be subject to an engagement quality control review. It also provides guidance on policies and procedures for performing engagement quality control reviews. An engagement quality control review should include a review of the financial statements or other subject matter information and the report, and, in particular, consideration of whether the report is appropriate. An engagement quality control review also should include either (i) a discussion with the practitioner-in-charge, (ii) a review of …
