An Analysis Of Fiscal Allocations In Elementary Schools Meeting And Not Meeting Ayp, William Roy Michael Barton
An Analysis Of Fiscal Allocations In Elementary Schools Meeting And Not Meeting Ayp, William Roy Michael Barton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study used a sequential explanatory, mixed-methods design to explore the relationship between fiscal decision making and the school improvement planning process at school sites in a large, southwestern school district and the impact those decisions and decision-making processes may have had on student achievement outcomes in elementary schools; The methodology for the study is comprised of two research phases. Phase I included a quantitative analysis of elementary school expenditure patterns across those categories delineated in the Cooper's and Lybrand's Finance Analysis Model databank for a large urban district in the southwest. Comparisons were made across three sub-groups of elementary …
Social Skills Of Students With Emotional Disabilities: A Technology -Based Intervention, Therese M Cumming
Social Skills Of Students With Emotional Disabilities: A Technology -Based Intervention, Therese M Cumming
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Students with emotional and behavioral disabilities can be some of the most difficult students to keep in the regular school setting, let alone include in general education classes (Desbians & Royer, 2005). Often, higher percentages of students with emotional disabilities are placed in the most restrictive settings (e.g., homebound, hospitals, and residential settings) than students with any other disability (Nelson, Jordan, & Rodrigues-Walling, 2002). One of the keys to success for these students is consistent and systematic instruction in the areas of behavior and social skills (Williams & Reisberg, 2003); The use of multimedia, student-generated social skills lessons coupled with …
A Poetic Canvas: Byron And Visual Culture, William Donati
A Poetic Canvas: Byron And Visual Culture, William Donati
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A Poetic Canvas: Byron and Visual Culture argues for a reading of Byron's poems within the cultural context of the sister arts of poetry and painting. In addition, the theatre and sculpture were also influential as visual inspiration for Byron. This study reveals the poet's substantial knowledge of the visual arts; consequently, informed by images he knew, readings convey a richer context of significance. The influence of drawings, print caricature, and paintings is found to be substantial, and the research challenges Byron's own statements, often repeated, that he knew nothing of painting. Although Byron is regarded as a poet of …
Nontraditional Aged Undergraduates In Higher Education: A Qualitative Study Of Decisions And Satisfaction, John Howard Gilbert
Nontraditional Aged Undergraduates In Higher Education: A Qualitative Study Of Decisions And Satisfaction, John Howard Gilbert
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Nontraditional aged undergraduates, those aged 25 or older, now comprise nearly 40% of the higher education population, and are more heavily represented on some campuses, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (2002). This demographic shift has not been reflected in current research, with most higher education studies focused on the traditional aged 18 to 24 college cohort. The older undergraduate population is included in some studies for comparative purposes, or they are subject of limited, outcome centered, studies. This study takes an in-depth approach to this population, focusing on the educational decision-making process and several aspects of satisfaction …

Violent Women In Film And The Sociological Relevance Of The Contemporary Action Heroine, Kathryn A Gilpatric
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This research examines mainstream representations and imagery of violent women in American cinema in a broad sense, and looks more specifically at the sociological relevance of the contemporary filmic action heroine. This research is not interpretive in nature but instead draws upon original data gained from an extensive content analysis spanning a 15-year period from 1991 to 2005. In addition, the research includes secondary source data gathered from movie industry statistics and industry reports in order to provide an empirically descriptive analysis of violent female action characters in contemporary American film; While many feminist film theorists argue that female action …
Glean: Poems, Joshua Peter Kryah
Glean: Poems, Joshua Peter Kryah
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Glean, a reference to the gathering of grain after harvest, explores the appalling trust implicit in any act of faith---that prayer may not elicit a response. Spare and evocative, the collection struggles with a language at odds with itself. How do we write about an absence that can never be fully possessed or known, an absence that may be all we ever glimpse of the divine? When does spirituality become more real than its pursuit? Moving between doubt and vulnerability, the body and its unresolved spiritual fate, Glean dedicates itself to the exploration of faith, simultaneously investigating the possibility of …

Delineating Anomalous Layers In Soil Profiles Using Seismic Surface Wave Methods, Xiaohui Jin
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Soil profiles with an included carbonate-cemented layer, a high velocity layer (HVL), are commonly encountered in Las Vegas, Nevada and other arid settings. Knowledge of the presence, geometry and hardness of the carbonate-cemented inclusions is important for civil engineering site investigation. Active-source seismic surface wave methods were tested to detect this HVL. An optimization method consisting of simulated annealing followed by linearized inversion was applied to the data; The purpose of this study was to improve the ability to detect and delineate the HVL using surface wave methods. Two approaches are followed. One is inversion of the effective dispersion curve …

Optimization For Finite Element Modeling Of Electronic Components Under Dynamic Loading, Srujanbabu Sridharala
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Usage of electronic components in the U.S. ARMY applications is becoming more challenging due to their usage in harsh environments. Experimental verification of these components is expensive and it can yield information about specific locations only. This research outlines the finite element modeling methodology for these electronic components that are subjected to high acceleration loads that occur over extremely short time such as impact, gun firing and blast events. Due to their miniature size these finite element models are computationally expensive. An optimization engine was presented to have an efficient analysis procedure that provides a combination of accuracy, computational speed …

The Paleotectonic Significance Of The Central Metamorphic Terrane, Northern California, Wendy M Barrow Johnson
The Paleotectonic Significance Of The Central Metamorphic Terrane, Northern California, Wendy M Barrow Johnson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Central Metamorphic terrane (CMt) is a fault-bounded package of metabasites that underlies the Eastern Klamath terrane along the Trinity fault. Interpretation of the CMt as the lower oceanic plate of a Silurian-Devonian intraoceanic subduction zone is a basic tenet of paleotectonic models for the Eastern Klamath province. Trace element data confirm the NMORB-like composition of CMt metabasite protoliths. Newly discovered relict textures and amphibole compositions, however, suggest significantly greater subduction burial and subsequent decompressional history during exhumation for CMt metabasites. New thermobarometry yields upper P-T estimates of ∼600°C and >1.5GPa, consistent with eclogite facies. Predominate mineral assemblages and metamorphic …
The Development Of Domain-Specific And Domain-General Metacognitive Monitoring, Brett Douglas Campbell
The Development Of Domain-Specific And Domain-General Metacognitive Monitoring, Brett Douglas Campbell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Metacognitive monitoring may be a critical element in self-regulated learning. Two types of metacognitive monitoring have been identified: domain-specific and domain-general. Domain-specific metacognitive monitoring occurs when an individual is monitoring content-specific knowledge. Domain-general metacognitive monitoring occurs in situations when content-specific knowledge is not available. Currently no research is available that examines the developmental differences between domain-specific and domain-general metacognitive monitoring in children. This study attempted to address this issue by asking children in first, fourth, and seventh grade to make item-by-item confidence judgments while providing answers in two domain-specific tasks and two domain-general tasks. Two working memory spans tasks were …
Wake Up The Family, Katherine Lien Chariott
Wake Up The Family, Katherine Lien Chariott
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
WAKE UP THE FAMILY is a collection of short stories, set in contemporary Las Vegas. These stories share more than a geographic setting; they share common concerns of loneliness, loss, alienation, and illness. The stories are further linked by the repetition (across multiple narratives) of plotlines, images, phrases, and key words. The links between these stories---thematic and otherwise---are meant to encourage a reading of the collection as one extended work of fiction, rather than as a group of separate works. It is hoped that these links will lead the reader to interpret each story in terms of the other (related) …

The Impact Of Computer-Based Interventions With And Without Primary Language Support On Reading Skills Of English Language Learners, Catherine M Draper Rodriguez
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Reading is the most important skill that English Language (EL) learners acquire in school (Slavin & Cheung, 2005). Success in reading has been shown to impact many areas of student social and economic opportunities (Peregoy & Boyle, 2005). Students who come to school with limited English proficiency have greater difficulty learning to read in English (Freeman & Freeman, 2004). With the rise in the number of EL learning students in schools, school districts are compelled to find ways to teach English literacy skills to students with primary languages other than English; This study had two purposes. The first purpose was …

Assessing The Effect Of Group Model Building On Stakeholder Teams Developing Urban Growth Strategies, Michael Francis Dwyer
Assessing The Effect Of Group Model Building On Stakeholder Teams Developing Urban Growth Strategies, Michael Francis Dwyer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Government in growing cities has a difficult time responding to problems that come with growth. The combination of the complexity of the problem, fragmentation in jurisdictions and responsibilities, and regional consequences produce diverse views of exactly what the problem is, what causes it, and how it is best addressed. The organizational structure of municipal government is not conducive to collaboration. Accordingly, governments have turned increasingly to stakeholder groups to develop growth management strategies. However, these stakeholder groups are not particularly successful. They struggle to achieve consensus even when facilitated and their recommendations often go unimplemented. The question I investigate in …

Removal Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin Microcystin -Lr By Biofiltration: Identification Of Toxin-Degrading Bacteria And Effects Of Backwashing, Lazaro Eleuterio
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The removal of the cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR by slow and rapid drinking water biofilters, the presence of the microcystin-degrading bacteria in operating biofilters, the impact of backwashing on the removal of microcystin by biofiltration, and the prediction of microcystin-LR removal using a nonsteady-state biofilm model were investigated. A newly recognized microcystin-LR degrader, Morganella morganii, exists in Lake Mead and operating active biofilters. The results of the biodegradation tests indicated that addition of a carbon source, in the form of biodegradable NOM, significantly delayed the degradation of microcystin-LR. The biofiltration experiments demonstrated that at steady-state, biofiltration may be a potential technology …
