Analysis Of Runtime Re-Configuration Systems, Utthaman Thirunavukkarasu Jan 2006

Analysis Of Runtime Re-Configuration Systems, Utthaman Thirunavukkarasu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In recent years Programmable Logic Devices (PLD) and in particular Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have seen a tremendous increase in sales and applications in the area of embedded systems. The main advantage of FPGAs is the flexibility that they offer a designer in reconfiguring the hardware. The flexibility achieved through re-configuration of FPGAs usually incurs an overhead of extra execution time, data memory and also power dissipation; FPGAs provide an ideal template for run-time reconfigurable (RTR) designs. Only recently have RTR enabling design tools that bypass the traditional synthesis and bitstream generation process for FPGAs become available, JBits is …

Loose Slots: Imaginations Of The American Demos, Jessica Frances Thomas Jan 2006

Loose Slots: Imaginations Of The American Demos, Jessica Frances Thomas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Millions of Americans are subject to television programs about Las Vegas through shows such as CSI and Las Vegas, but there is little fictionalized writing done about this city, and only a small percentage of that takes place off the Strip. Since the publication of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , there has yet to another pop literary examination of Las Vegas as a cultural contributor to the American experience. Partially because of the fluid nature of the city, its ability to shape-shift within a decade, and partially because it is so difficult to avoid the …

Verbal And Nonverbal Mitigating Communication On Information Processing And Anger, Rebecca L Thomas Jan 2006

Verbal And Nonverbal Mitigating Communication On Information Processing And Anger, Rebecca L Thomas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Frustration, anger, and aggression have been linked in the literature. Studies have shown that participants are capable of using verbal and nonverbal communication to display and interpret emotions. One interesting communication phenomena is mitigating information, this would include an apology or an explanation. The fundamental attribution error posits that people attribute an individual's behavior to dispositional characteristics more often than situational components. In the current study participants were undergraduate psychology students recruited for a study investigating social interaction. Participants engaged in a frustrating interaction and encountered one of four communication conditions. These included verbal or nonverbal communication, with and without …

Uncertainty Analysis: Mid-Term Operational Model For The Lower Colorado River, Shana Goffman Tighi Jan 2006

Uncertainty Analysis: Mid-Term Operational Model For The Lower Colorado River, Shana Goffman Tighi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Water managers at the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation as well as other federal and local agencies use a monthly modeling tool called the 24-Month Study as the numerical basis of many decisions along the Lower Colorado River. It is a deterministic model and currently does not provide information about the uncertainty associated with forecasted outputs. As water resource management becomes increasingly based on technical models, managers realize the importance of the ability to understand and quantify uncertainty. This thesis contributes to efforts in this arena by accomplishing the following objectives: (1) identification of the various sources of …

Design And Evaluation Of Multi-Axis Vibration Shaker Concepts, Brinda Holur Venkatesh Jan 2006

Design And Evaluation Of Multi-Axis Vibration Shaker Concepts, Brinda Holur Venkatesh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Elastic bodies exhibit structural resonance and mode shapes at various natural frequencies. In order to avoid structural overloads and equipment malfunctions, elastic systems, mechanical and/or electrical must be evaluated and tested for their performance over the entire frequency range of their operations. Shaker systems replicate the dynamic loads encountered in a field environment, and are used for vibration testing of elastic structures. Such vibration testing ensures the reliable performance of the final product; The objective of this research project, sponsored by the Army Research Lab (ARL), is the design and Finite Element evaluation of a new multi-axis shaker system, which …

Self-Stabilizing Sorting On Linear Networks, Lakshmi Visvanathan Jan 2006

Self-Stabilizing Sorting On Linear Networks, Lakshmi Visvanathan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A self-stabilizing system has the ability to recover from an arbitrary (possibly faulty) state to a normal state without any manual intervention. A self-stabilizing algorithm does not require any initialization. Starting from an arbitrary state, it is guaranteed to satisfy its specification in finite number of steps; We propose a self-stabilizing distributed sorting algorithm on an oriented linear network with n nodes. Each node holds some initial value(s) drawn from an arbitrary set. We assume that we start with at most k items in the network. Each node has a local memory whose space is restricted to O(k * L …

Self-Stabilizing Cluster Routing In Manet Using Link-Cluster Architecture, Chakradhar R Jagganagari Jan 2006

Self-Stabilizing Cluster Routing In Manet Using Link-Cluster Architecture, Chakradhar R Jagganagari

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We design a self-stabilizing cluster routing algorithm based on the link-cluster architecture of wireless ad hoc networks. The network is divided into clusters. Each cluster has a single special node, called a clusterhead that contains the routing information about inter and intra-cluster communication. A cluster is comprised of all nodes that choose the corresponding clusterhead as their leader. The algorithm consists of two main tasks. First, the set of special nodes (clusterheads) is elected such that it models the link-cluster architecture: any node belongs to a single cluster, it is within two hops of the clusterhead, it knows the direct …

Corrosion And Metallurgical Behavior Of Alloy C-22 For High-Temperature Applications, Raghunandan A Karamcheti Jan 2006

Corrosion And Metallurgical Behavior Of Alloy C-22 For High-Temperature Applications, Raghunandan A Karamcheti

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Austenitic Alloy C-22 has been tested for evaluation of its tensile and corrosion properties under conditions relevant to the nuclear hydrogen generation process known as the sulfur-iodine cycle. The results of tensile testing indicate that this alloy may be capable of maintaining metallurgical stability and enhanced ductility at temperatures up to 600°C. The stress-corrosion-cracking data suggest that this alloy may not undergo cracking in an acidic solution at 90°C at constant-load, the true failure stress (of) was significantly reduced under a slow-strain-rate condition using both smooth and notched specimens. The magnitude of the critical potentials determined by a polarization technique …

Tibial Rotation And Valgus Movement At The Knee During Cutting And Stopping, Amanda Tritsch Jan 2006

Tibial Rotation And Valgus Movement At The Knee During Cutting And Stopping, Amanda Tritsch

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study was performed to examine tibial rotation and valgus movement at the knee during dynamic sport-specific movements, a jump stop and a side cut maneuver associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. We aimed to assess whether six male and eight female skilled soccer athletes perform these maneuvers with different magnitudes of valgus movement and tibial rotation at the knee. Nine trials of each maneuver were analyzed for each subject. There was a significant difference between males and females for valgus angle at contact, maximum valgus angle, and maximum external rotation (p<0.05). There was no difference for any dependant variable between jump stop and side cut maneuver, and Sex * Maneuver no interaction. Though there is certainly more than one reason for greater number of ACL injuries in females, not finding a difference in valgus movement between the sexes may indicate that tibial rotation might play a greater role than valgus movement alone.

Donning The White Agbada, Abayomi Animashaun Jan 2006

Donning The White Agbada, Abayomi Animashaun

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

No poet, Eliot says, makes art alone by himself; he works with the collection of the dead and living poets around him. It is with this in mind that I have put together this poetry collection, Donning the White Agbada, in honor of William Stafford. Although the collection is dedicated to Mr. Stafford, it is not limited to him; it draws freely and extensively from different writers, different materials, and different periods---from the Christian Bible, to Robert Frost, to Sophocles, to Nigerian History, and to Yoruba mythology, among others. So that what is created (in my ongoing exploration of Western …

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Cytokine-Mediated Synergistic Induction Of Astrocytic Interleukin-6 Release: A Mechanistic Study, Grant Toshio Aguinaldo Jan 2006

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Cytokine-Mediated Synergistic Induction Of Astrocytic Interleukin-6 Release: A Mechanistic Study, Grant Toshio Aguinaldo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A paucity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels is thought to encourage cytokine release in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A mechanistic investigation into the GABA-mediated suppression of the synergistic release of interleukin (IL)-6 by IL-1beta and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha is presented. Preliminary results indicate that p38 and nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB are essential for the synergistic release of IL-6 by IL-1beta and TNF-alpha. Both IL-1beta and TNF-alpha are able to stimulate the phosphorylation of p38, however, no synergistic stimulation was observed. IL-1beta or TNF-alpha is able to stimulate the degradation of the NF-kappaB inhibitor, IkappaB-alpha, with no change in IkappaB-beta. Interestingly, TNF-alpha …

Defining Youth Psychopathy, Arva A Bensaheb Jan 2006

Defining Youth Psychopathy, Arva A Bensaheb

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Psychopathy has been considered one of the most dangerous and pervasive of disorders known to date. The construct has been researched extensively in the adult male criminal population but an ongoing debate remains as to whether personality or behavioral criteria should be considered cardinal to this disorder. A preliminary construct for "adolescent psychopathy" has been based on downward extensions of adult criteria such as the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R). This process has been controversial, however, and yielded no conclusive findings. This study adopted a "back to basics" approach to define the construct of adolescent psychopathy using clinicians' judgments.

Evidence Of An Active Enso And Pdo During The Mid-Holocene From A Costa Rican Speleothem, April Dianne Azouz Jan 2006

Evidence Of An Active Enso And Pdo During The Mid-Holocene From A Costa Rican Speleothem, April Dianne Azouz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) are the most important sources of interannual to multidecadal climate variability in the tropics. A high resolution ({dollar}3.8 years/sample) paleoclimate record of Central American rainfall variability has been reconstructed from a U/Th-dated stalagmite (7890 to 6490 yrs B.P.) from Costa Rica to constrain the onset and variability of ENSO throughout the Holocene, and to determine its role in generating regional climate anomalies. I suggest drier conditions, forced by El Nino and/or the PDO, are represented by higher delta 18O values, and are correlative with higher delta13C values, indicating that …

High-Temperature Deformation And Environment-Induced Degradation Of Waspaloy, Jagadesh K Yelavarthi Jan 2006

High-Temperature Deformation And Environment-Induced Degradation Of Waspaloy, Jagadesh K Yelavarthi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The tensile properties of Waspaloy, a candidate structural material to be used in nuclear hydrogen generation, were evaluated at temperatures up to 1000°C. The results indicate that this alloy was capable of maintaining appreciably high tensile strength up to 600°C, followed by a substantial drop beyond this temperature. Between ambient temperature and 300°C, the failure strain was lowest at 300°C due to a maximum dislocation density, as determined by transmission electron microscopy. The lowest ductility was, however, observed at 800°C, possibly due to the formation of brittle sigma phase. The cracking susceptibility of Waspaloy in an acidic solution was enhanced …

Paleoepidemiology Of Bacterial Infections Among Prehistoric Human Populations In Northern Chile: An Ancient Dna Approach, Luz-Andrea Pfister Jan 2006

Paleoepidemiology Of Bacterial Infections Among Prehistoric Human Populations In Northern Chile: An Ancient Dna Approach, Luz-Andrea Pfister

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Bacterial pathogens not primarily affecting the skeleton but causing sepsis and death, have not been systematically studied in prehistoric human populations, although increasing evidence support our species long co-evolution with many of them. With molecular methods we can identify bacteria at the species level and distinguish pathogenic from environmental and soil bacteria. Bone marrow of ancient people may provide valuable information about ancient pathogens causing sepsis and death. To test the hypothesis that PCR amplification using universal bacterial primers will identify prehistoric bacterial pathogens in bone marrow, 30 samples were aseptically obtained from partially mummified remains of three archaeological sites …

Bioaccumulation Of Mercury In The Aquatic Food Chain Of Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum) In Lake Siskiwit, Northern Wisconsin, United States, Beth Ellen Domowicz Jan 2006

Bioaccumulation Of Mercury In The Aquatic Food Chain Of Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum) In Lake Siskiwit, Northern Wisconsin, United States, Beth Ellen Domowicz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Great Lakes fishery is highly utilized, despite known contamination. The Great Lakes Region has experienced elevated amounts of atmospheric deposition of mercury, with many of its water bodies having documented levels of mercury (ASTDR 1999, Dellinger 2004, Greib et al. 1990, Kleinert and Degurse 1971). The chemical characteristics of methylmercury contribute to high rates of absorption (highly lipophilic and readily crosses biological membranes) and low rates of elimination. As a result of the properties of methylmercury, 60-90% of the mercury in fish is methylmercury (O'Neill 1993). Methylmercury is taken in by fish from food sources, through the gills (Haydon …
