The Impact Of Financial Market And Resale Market On Firm Strategies, Zhiling Guo, Andrew B. Whinston Jan 2006

The Impact Of Financial Market And Resale Market On Firm Strategies, Zhiling Guo, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ever-increasing use of information technology (IT) in business transactions greatly expands firms? exposure to different electronic markets. This paper provides a framework to understand how firms can leverage different strategies across external financial markets and an internal resale market to improve overall profitability. We develop a model in which a group of risk-averse retailers sell a homogeneous product to their respective uncertain consumer markets. We study a scenario where an internal resale market can be constructed among the retailers and outside financial markets can be used to improve their ability to manage uncertainty. We identify strategies for retailers operating …

Disintegration-Of-Measure Techniques For Commuting Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Raúl E. Curto, Jasang Yoon Jan 2006

Disintegration-Of-Measure Techniques For Commuting Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Raúl E. Curto, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We employ techniques from the theory of disintegration of measures to study the Lifting Problem for commuting $n$-tuples of subnormal weighted shifts. We obtain a new necessary condition for the existence of a lifting, and generate new pathology associated with bringing together the Berger measures associated to each individual weighted shift. For subnormal $2$-variable weighted shifts, we then find the precise relation between the Berger measure of the pair and the Berger measures of the shifts associated to horizontal rows and vertical columns of weights.

The Assessment Of Teaching, Allen C. Estes, Ronald W. Welch, Stephen J. Ressler Jan 2006

The Assessment Of Teaching, Allen C. Estes, Ronald W. Welch, Stephen J. Ressler

Architectural Engineering

The role of the teacher in the classroom carries tremendous responsibility. A group of students that can range from a half-dozen to several hundred depend on their professor to provide structure to a body of knowledge, to guide the learning process, to convey difficult subjects in a clear manner, to lead the classroom and out-of-class activities so that student time is used efficiently, and to provide a course of instruction in which the students can successfully complete the learning objectives. And somehow, the teacher is expected to establish some rapport with these students along the way. How does the teacher …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In the Limousin area, Variscan leucogranitic plutons are spatially associated with normal faults and major strike-slip shear zones that are a continuation of the South Armorican shear zone. Our study focuses on the large N-S-trending Millevaches granitic massif (Massif Central, France), and intends to highlight, through gravity modelling, structural and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), the massif structure at depth and to discuss the mode of emplacement of granites within a strike-slip tectonic context. The mica subfabric suggests that the magnetic foliations display a general NW-SE sub-horizontal pattern on both sides of the N-S Pradines dextral wrench fault zone that …

Durum Wheat Quality: Ii. The Relationship Of Kernel Physicochemical Composition To Semolina Quality And End Product Utilisation, J Samaan, Gh El-Khayat, Fa Manthey, Mp Fuller, Cs Brennan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Kernel quality characteristics, semolina milling potential, dough rheology and pasta making properties of kernels from nine fully irrigated Syrian durum wheat genotypes were observed. Protein content of the kernels exerted a significant affect on the physical characteristics hardness and the degree of kernel vitreousness, both of which were highly correlated with superior end‐use product. Gluten composition of semolina appeared as significant as overall protein content in determining the optimum end‐use product cooking quality (cooking time and pasta texture). The final viscosity of durum flour exhibited positive correlations with semolina recovery, protein content, gluten content, vitreousness, the optimum‐cooking time of pasta …

There are many deficiencies in the traditional electronic commerce schema. The main problem for consideration is the text and picture based design that underpins current HTML systems. This paper presents the online grocery shopping system called Easy Grocery which is available at www.easygrocery.co.uk. This system is based on the innovative concept of using a 3D system as an interface to the user during their shopping experience. Furthermore, this 3D system follows the mental model of the user as opposed to that of the developer. Additionally, the user is able to select the layout of the online store so that it …

Efficient Mining Of Group Patterns From User Movement Data, Yida Wang, Ee Peng Lim, San-Yih Hwang Jan 2006

Efficient Mining Of Group Patterns From User Movement Data, Yida Wang, Ee Peng Lim, San-Yih Hwang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a new approach to derive groupings of mobile users based on their movement data. We assume that the user movement data are collected by logging location data emitted from mobile devices tracking users. We formally define group pattern as a group of users that are within a distance threshold from one another for at least a minimum duration. To mine group patterns, we first propose two algorithms, namely AGP and VG-growth. In our first set of experiments, it is shown when both the number of users and logging duration are large, AGP and VG-growth are …

Music Transcription Within Irish Traditional Music, Mikel Gainza Jan 2006

Music Transcription Within Irish Traditional Music, Mikel Gainza

Doctoral

Transcribing Irish traditional music is an open-field of research. The oral transmission of the music between generations explains the lack of transcription until recent times. The music can be played solo, which permits the player to exploit the variety of ornamentation types, in unison, and also with the accompaniment of a harmonic instrument. Different signal processing applications for transcribing Irish traditional music are presented in this thesis, including onset, ornamentation and pitch detection. An onset detection system which focuses on the characteristics of the tin whistle within Irish traditional music is first presented. The tin whistle is a good example …

Composting Of Biodegradable Municipal Waste In Ireland, Niamh Power, Jerry D. Murphy Jan 2006

Composting Of Biodegradable Municipal Waste In Ireland, Niamh Power, Jerry D. Murphy

Publications

The implementation of the Landfill Directive (96/31/EC) will lead to a massive reduction in quantities of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW), which may be landfilled. In 2016, an estimated 2.6 million tonnes of BMW will require diversion from landfill in Ireland. Recycling of dry paper, reuse of textiles and home composting will divert significant quantities of BMW. However, to divert the quantities required to comply with the Directive a significant proportion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) will require treatment in centralised biological facilities. A survey was undertaken of composting facilities in Ireland to ascertain present capacity, present …

Parameter Inference Of Queueing Models For It Systems Using End-To-End Measurements, Laura Wynter, Cathy H. Xia, Fan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As Information Technology (IT) matures and expands in the scope of available applications, IT systems increase at a fascinating rate in both size and complexity. For example, today, a typical Web service hosting center may have hundreds of nodes and dozens of different applications simultaneously running on it. Each of the nodes in turn has often multiple processors and layered caches. These nodes make use of both local and shared storage systems. The size and complexity of such systems make performance modeling much more difficult, if at all tractable. Detailed modeling, fine tuning and accurate analysis can be carried out …

Information requirements determination is a critical task in system development projects. Many human issues may hinder the efforts to accurately capture and clearly understand users' information requirements. In this paper, we review the cognitive underpinnings of some human issues, which are discussed in existing literature and relevant to information requirements determination. We then propose the use of cognitive mapping techniques in the process of information requirements determination. Three widely used cognitive mapping techniques - causal mapping, semantic mapping, and concept mapping – are briefly introduced in this article. A case is used to illustrate how to use these cognitive mapping …

Applying The Laws Of Logic To The Logic Of Laws, Hillel J. Bavli Jan 2006

Applying The Laws Of Logic To The Logic Of Laws, Hillel J. Bavli

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

The article begins by discussing the difficulties of proving consistency within a formal legal system generally. After establishing the importance of a formalized legal model as a prerequisite of rigorous examination of consistency, it proceeds to investigate issues intrinsic to the current system of law that may prevent formalization of a just legal system as currently conceived. The article argues that flexibility inherent in a just legal system may foreclose the possibility of legal formalization or any comprehensive model thereof. The article concludes, however, that a model whose purpose is the examination of consistency within a system need not necessarily …
