Validation Assessment Model For Atmospheric Retrievals, Nikita Pougatchev, Gail Bingham, Joel Cardon, Karen St. Germain, Stephen Mango, Joe Tansock, Vladimir Zavyalov, Stanislav Kireev, David Tobin

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A linear mathematical error model for the assessment of validation activity of atmospheric retrievals is presented. The purpose of the validation activity is to assess the actual performance of the remote sensing validated system while in orbit by comparing its measurements to some relevant—validating—data sets. The validating system samples volumes of the atmosphere at times and locations that are different from the ones when and where the validated system makes its own observations. The location of the validating system can be either stationary, e.g. a ground ARM site, or movable, e.g. an aircraft or some other satellites. The true states …

Study Of Visualizations For N-Body Stellar Models, Christian Gray Jan 2006

Study Of Visualizations For N-Body Stellar Models, Christian Gray

Theses

The visualization of large datasets is invaluable to the advancement of scientific knowledge. N-Body problems produced large dataset that present several challenges to visualization. These challenges include over-plotting and self-obscuring data. Using the general visualization framework, Spiegel, five different visualization techniques are explored to solve these problems: slicing, projection, 3D projection, 3D density shells, and direct volume rendering. Each visualization looks to solve the problem in a slightly different manner while all have kernel density estimation as their starting point. While none of the visualization is ground breaking or perfectly solves the problems they do provide new insight allowing for …

An Evolutionary Computation Approach To Optimization Of Isoelectric Point Prediction In Proteins, Chris Parkin Jan 2006

An Evolutionary Computation Approach To Optimization Of Isoelectric Point Prediction In Proteins, Chris Parkin

Theses

Computational biology has attacked the problem of isoelectric point prediction with little success, achieving a rough accuracy level of only 30%. In 2005, Matthew Conte performed a study focused on the relationship between sequence characteristics and isoelectric point prediction accuracy. Results indicated that charges between adjacent amino acids could have a significant impact on the overall predicted pi for the protein. In this study we introduce an evolutionary computation approach aimed at accounting for these problem dipeptides. For each possible dipeptide involving charged amino acids (7 chargeable groups -> 49 possibilities), the algorithm predicts a pKa value that, when included …

Media Coverage And Disaster Relief: Is A Picture Worth A Thousand Words?, Jessica H. Minty

Honors Theses

This paper analyzes the effect of media coverage on donations made to relief agencies. Specifically, this empirical analysis examines the effect of the daily volume of domestic newspaper and television coverage devoted to the December 26, 2004 tsunami on daily web donations to U.S. relief agencies. Media coverage, as measured by daily newspaper word and picture counts and by daily total television minutes positively affects the amount of donations relief agencies receive. In addition, media coverage is found to have a greater effect on donations for some agencies than for others.

An Exploratory Study Of: Designers' Finishing Knowledge And The Communication Flow Between Designers And Finishing Professionals, Melissa A. Lyon

Theses

Several fundamental questions about graphic designers' print finishing knowledge motivated this thesis. Is there a gap in knowledge between the fields of finishing and design? What do designers actually know about finishing? Is this knowledge enough to enable them to communicate well with printers/finishers and design printed pieces efficiently so finishing runs smoothly? What happens when mistakes are made due to a lack of education and communication? If designers do need to know more information about finishing, what are the most important concepts? Are there any resources now that designers can use to learn more about finishing? Do printers/finishers have …

Development And Characterization Of High Performance Transistors On Glass, Robert Saxer Jan 2006

Development And Characterization Of High Performance Transistors On Glass, Robert Saxer

Theses

Currently, the electrical drivers behind active-matrix flat-panel displays are polysilicon or amorphous silicon based thin-film transistors (TFTs). The ability to integrate transistors onto the glass substrate offers certain design and performance advantages over package-level integration with bulk silicon ICs; this is commonly referred to as system-on-glass (SOG) or system-on-panel (SOP). System on glass may also lower the manufacturing costs of the entire product. Cell phones, personal digital assistants, and entertainment systems are examples of applications that would benefit from system on glass integration. This project is a joint effort between the Microelectronic Engineering Department at RIT and Corning Incorporated. Thin- …

Horizontal Inequity In The Property Taxation Of Apartment, Industrial , Office, And Retail Properties, Gary C. Cornia, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

Researchers have carefully examined assessment unifor- mity in ad valorem taxation for single-family residential properties and they have frequently reported nonuniform outcomes in the appraisal of these properties. This study analyzes the uniformity of assessed valuations across apartment, industrial, office, and retail properties in Maricopa County (Metropolitan Phoenix), Arizona. Specifically, we investigate horizontal equity, which results when the assessment ratio (assessed value/sales price) is uniform across properties with similar market values. We examine horizontal equity over a five-and-one-half-year period (January 1998-June 2003). After applying both parametric and nonparametric tests, we find statistically significant evidence of horizontal inequity. We find that …
