Technical Change And Us Economic Growth: The Interwar Period And The 1990s, Alexander J. Field Jan 2006

Technical Change And Us Economic Growth: The Interwar Period And The 1990s, Alexander J. Field

Economics

Multifactor productivity growth in the U.S. economy between 1919 and 1929 was almost entirely attributable to advance within manufacturing. Distributing steam power mechanically over shafts and belts required multistory buildings for economical operation. The widespread diffusion of electric power permitted a shift to single story layouts in which goods flow could be optimized around work stations powered by small electric motors. Within this framework, as well as opportunities to produce a variety of new products, economies of scale and learning by doing permitted rapid and across the board gains in manufacturing productivity. The sector contributed 83 percent of the 2.02 …

Dim Delobsom: French Colonialism And Local Response In Upper Volta, Michael Kevane Jan 2006

Dim Delobsom: French Colonialism And Local Response In Upper Volta, Michael Kevane

Economics

Dim Delobsom was one of the first indigenous colonial bureaucrats in the French administration of Upper Volta. Born in 1897, he rapidly rose through the ranks of colonial administration, becoming a high-level functionary. He also served as the resident anthropologist of the dominant Mossi tribe of Upper Volta, and published numerous books and articles on Mossi customs. Delobsom fell afoul of an important faction of the colonial apparatus, however, when he decided to assume the chieftaincy of his natal village upon his father's death. Colonial officials and French Catholic priests thought he would be compromised as a bureaucrat-chief, and sought …

Lésions Professionnelles Reliées Aux Vibrations Mains-Bras Au Québec, 1993 À 2002. Partie I : Portrait Général À Partir Des Données Informatiques De La Csst, Patrice Duguay, Paul Massicotte

Portraits statistiques

Yale Leaf Morphology Digitization And Network Project, David Stern Jan 2006

Yale Leaf Morphology Digitization And Network Project, David Stern

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This article describes a digitization project inspired by the innovative leaf morphology classification work of a faculty member in the Geology and Geophysics Department and the Peabody Museum at Yale University. We began our initiative by scanning the Flora Fossilis Arctica, a 7-volume fossil leaf identification tool covering various geological areas, published between 1868 and 1883. This classic paleobotany resource was digitized, creating tiff, pdf, and searchable pdf files. We are now converting the searchable pdf files into ASCII text, enhancing the raw data with metadata elements, placing this material on the web for searching and display; and linking this …

Reconceptualising Female Trafficking: The Inhuman Trade In Women, Alison Cole Jan 2006

Reconceptualising Female Trafficking: The Inhuman Trade In Women, Alison Cole

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that female trafficking must be reconceptualized under international criminal law as a crime against humanity to establish a uniform legal framework for combating this global issue. It critiques existing international approaches for lacking coherence and enforcement, emphasizing the need for a clear definition and standardized measures to address the severity of trafficking. The UN Trafficking Protocol, while authoritative, leaves significant discretion to states, resulting in varied domestic policies that hinder effective international cooperation. By classifying female trafficking as a crime against humanity, the article proposes a more robust legal basis for universal jurisdiction and individual liability, aligning …

Rapid Variability In The Japan/East Sea: Basin Oscillations, Internal Tides, And Near-Inertial Oscillations, Jae-Hun Park, D. Randolph Watts, Mark Wimbush, Jeffrey W. Book, Karen L. Tracey, Yongsheng Xu

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Many processes contribute to the variations of currents, sea surface height (SSH), and thermocline depth in marginal seas. Energetic examples range broadly over time scales from slow mesoscale and interannual variations to rapid basin oscillations, internal tides, and near-inertial oscillations. Our measurement array in the Japan/East Sea (JES) offered a special opportunity to study these processes simultaneously, revealing important interconnections among them.

Volatility Clustering, Leverage Effects, And Jump Dynamics In The Us And Emerging Asian Equity Markets;, Elton Daal, Atsuyuki Naka, Jung-Suk Yu Jan 2006

Volatility Clustering, Leverage Effects, And Jump Dynamics In The Us And Emerging Asian Equity Markets;, Elton Daal, Atsuyuki Naka, Jung-Suk Yu

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This paper proposes asymmetric GARCH-Jump models that synthesize autoregressive jump intensities and volatility feedback in the jump component. Our results indicate that these models provide a better fit for the dynamics of the equity returns in the US and emerging Asian markets, irrespective whether the volatility feedback is generated through a common GARCH multiplier or a separate measure of volatility in the jump intensity function. We also find that they can capture several distinguishing features of the return dynamics in emerging markets, such as, more volatility persistence, less leverage effects, fatter tails, and greater contribution and variability of the jump …

Why Do Companies Choose To Go Ipos? New Results Using Data From Taiwan;, Shen Yang-Pin, Peihwang Wei

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

In this study, we examine the determinants of firms' IPO decisions in Taiwan, for the sample period of 1989 to 2000. The regulations in Taiwan permit us to identify firms that met IPO requirements but chose not to go public. The unique regulatory environment allows a clear comparison of firms that choose IPOs and those that do not. With the exception of Pagano, Panetta and Zingales (1998), we are not aware of any similar study. Their paper examines the IPO market in Italy, and there seem to be considerable differences between that market and Taiwan market. Indeed, we find strong …

Examining The Choice Between Tracking Stocks And Minority Carve-Out And Their Relative Performances, Wei He, Tarun K. Mukherjee, Peihwang Wei

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

In this paper, we examine factors influencing the choice between tracking stocks and minority carve-outs and their performances. We expand the research in this field by incorporating a fa ctor that was largely ignored in extant literature: managerial entrenchment. We find that the following firms have a greater tendency to choose tracking stocks over carve-outs: firms with a tendency to increase executive pays--especially those in the form of subsidiary stocks, firms that are more tightly controlled by their executives, and firms with greater financial strength prior to restructuring. The former two are consistent with our conjecture that managerial entrenchment plays …

Survey Research In Finance: Views From Journal Editors, H. Kent Baker, Tarun K. Mukherjee Jan 2006

Survey Research In Finance: Views From Journal Editors, H. Kent Baker, Tarun K. Mukherjee

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We survey editors from 15 "core" and 35 "non-core" finance journals to learn their views about specific issues involving survey research. Based on responses from 25 editors, none of their journals has an established policy involving the publication of survey research. The evidence shows that survey-based manuscripts typically go through the same review process as other manuscripts. However, editors of "core" versus "non-core" journals have mixed views about the role that survey research should play in the finance literature. The editors provide their views about the strengths and weaknesses of survey research as well as topic areas that would benefit …

Nematodes In Western Australian Vineyards, Vivien Vanstone, Neil Lantzke Jan 2006

Nematodes In Western Australian Vineyards, Vivien Vanstone, Neil Lantzke

Bulletins 4000 -

Nematodes are worm-like microscopic animals that live in the soil. There are numerous soil-inhabiting nematode species, but not all are harmful to plants. Some nematodes are plant-parasitic, feeding on and damaging roots, including those of grapevine. Feeding activities of these nematodes reduce the vine’s ability to take up water and nutrients from the soil, leading to lack of vigour, symptoms of nutrient deficiency, wilting, lower yield, vine decline and, in severe cases, vine death. Nematode feeding sites can also lead to entry of other disease-causing organisms (e.g. fungi or bacteria), resulting in rapid vine decline.

Nematodes can survive in the …

Australian Plague Locust (Chortoicetes Terminifera), Department Of Agriculture And Food, Wa Jan 2006

Australian Plague Locust (Chortoicetes Terminifera), Department Of Agriculture And Food, Wa

Bulletins 4000 -

The Australian plague locust (APL) is the most economically important grasshopper in Australia. The immature hopper stage damages mainly pastures in farming areas, and gardens and lawns in domestic areas. They tend to avoid established green crops, although the edges of crops can be damaged. Adult locusts can form swarms and fly into other areas, damaging pastures, ripening cereal, lupin and pulse crops, grapevines, fruit trees and native tree seedlings. If crops have completely dried off before locusts begin flying, the possibility of damage is considerably less.
