The Effects Of Nutrition On The Cognitive Skills Of Students From Kindergarten Through Third Grades, Rebecca Lorentz Jan 2006

The Effects Of Nutrition On The Cognitive Skills Of Students From Kindergarten Through Third Grades, Rebecca Lorentz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This research explores the positive relationships between good nutrition and the cognitive skills of students in kindergarten through third grade. This paper discusses how certain nutrients have been found to improve skills such as memory retention, spatial relationships, and pattern skills. Since these are necessary skills of early childhood academics, parents, educators, and the students themselves will benefit from learning more about how nutrition affects those skills.

Water Quality Monitoring For Suitable Juvenile Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Habitat In The Carmel River Lagoon During Minimal Fresh Water Inflow : A Capstone Project ..., Eric M. Lumas Jan 2006

Water Quality Monitoring For Suitable Juvenile Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Habitat In The Carmel River Lagoon During Minimal Fresh Water Inflow : A Capstone Project ..., Eric M. Lumas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Carmel River Lagoon (CRL), along the Central California coast, is thought to provide a nursery ground for juvenile Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), a federally listed species under the Endangered Species Act. Every year during the summer months the Carmel River feeding this lagoon dries up due to the high demand for water by local residents. It is thought that suitable steelhead nursery grounds become limited in the absence of this fresh water inflow and by the increased salinity from winter swells into the lagoon. The purpose of this report was to monitor the water quality for suitable Steelhead trout …

Role Of Anomalous Warm Gulf Waters In The Intensification Of Hurricane Katrina, Menas Kafatos, D. Sun, Ritesh Gautam, Z. Boybeyi, Ruixin Yang, G. Cervone

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The year 2005 experienced several strong hurricanes intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall that severely damaged the Gulf States, especially Hurricane Katrina. Remarkable similarities between sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) and major hurricane (categories 3 and higher) activity over the Gulf are identified. However, the intensification of individual hurricanes may not necessarily be temporally and spatially coincident with the distribution of warm waters or high sea surface temperature (SST). High SST values are found in advance of significant intensification of Hurricane Katrina. We emphasize that high SSTA which occurred at the right time and right place was …

Reducing Heavy Drinking In College Males With The Decisional Balance: Analyzing An Element Of Motivational Interviewing, Joseph W. Labrie, Eric R. Pedersen, Mitch Earleywine, Hutson Olsen

Heads Up!

The decisional balance, a brief detailing of the advantages and disadvantages of behavior change, serves as a key component to interventions in Motivational Interviewing. The impact of this component alone is not well understood. Forty-seven men completed a Timeline Followback interview assessing alcohol consumption and unsafe sexual practices. They then completed a decisional balance, listing the Pros and Cons of decreasing their drinking, but not one for safer sex. One-month follow-up data showed that they had statistically significant and clinically meaningful increases in their motivation to alter drinking and decreases in the number of drinks that they intended to drink, …

Comparing Electronic-Keypad Responses To Paper-And-Pencil Questionnaires In Group Assessments Of Alcohol Consumption And Related Attitudes, Joseph W. Labrie, Mitch Earleywine, Toby Lamb, Kristin Shelesky Jan 2006

Comparing Electronic-Keypad Responses To Paper-And-Pencil Questionnaires In Group Assessments Of Alcohol Consumption And Related Attitudes, Joseph W. Labrie, Mitch Earleywine, Toby Lamb, Kristin Shelesky

Heads Up!

Electronic versions of questionnaires have the potential to improve research and interventions in the addictions. Administering questionnaires electronically to groups, however, has proven difficult without a multitude of computers, but gathering data electronically from a group could make for easy assessment and quick feedback. Using a sample of 107 college students, we examined the validity of wireless keypad survey responses by comparing them to traditional paper-and-pencil questionnaires. The two formats led to almost identical responses that did not differ significantly from each other (all effect sizes less than g =.15) and high correlations between formats. The wireless, handheld keypad procedure …

Intrinsic Linking And Knotting Of Graphs In Arbitrary 3–Manifolds, Erica Flapan, Hugh Howards, Don Lawrence, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We prove that a graph is intrinsically linked in an arbitrary 3–manifold MM if and only if it is intrinsically linked in S3. Also, assuming the Poincaré Conjecture, we prove that a graph is intrinsically knotted in M if and only if it is intrinsically knotted in S3.

Activation Of Toll-Like Receptor 2 Through Tlr2-Lrr Binding Synthetic Peptides, Christopher Benton Jan 2006

Activation Of Toll-Like Receptor 2 Through Tlr2-Lrr Binding Synthetic Peptides, Christopher Benton

Master's Theses and Capstones

Bacterial sepsis and systemic inflammatory immune responses continue to be major causes of illness and death despite extensive research into the development of antimicrobial agents. There is a need for novel therapeutic reagents designed to modulate these responses. Toll-like receptor 2 plays a key role in the development of innate and adaptive immune responses to microbial products that interact with the receptor's extracellular leucine-rich repeat ligand-binding domain. In a preliminary study, five peptides were synthesized that bound to the leucine-rich repeat region of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2). We tested the hypothesis that the novel TLR 2 leucine rich repeat binding …

Investigation Of A Submerged Four-Bay Mooring System For Aquaculture, Glen Rice Jan 2006

Investigation Of A Submerged Four-Bay Mooring System For Aquaculture, Glen Rice

Master's Theses and Capstones

The August 2003 deployment of a second generation mooring system for fish cages at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) open ocean aquaculture site, south of the Isles of Shoals, NH, is described and evaluated. The new system, a submerged four bay grid similar to those used in inshore aquaculture, uses submerged flotation to maintain its depth and tension. The system's depth and line tensions are sensitive to the deployed anchor locations. Anchors that are not positioned correctly can have reduced holding power or result in problem snap loads.

The mooring system deployment process and its resulting geometry was examined …

Intersection Graphs For String Links, Blake Mellor Jan 2006

Intersection Graphs For String Links, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We extend the notion of intersection graphs for knots in the theory of finite type invariants to string links. We use our definition to develop weight systems for string links via the adjacency matrix of the intersection graph, and show that these weight systems are related to the weight systems induced by the Conway and Homfly polynomials.

Chord Diagrams And Gauss Codes For Graphs, Thomas Fleming, Blake Mellor Jan 2006

Chord Diagrams And Gauss Codes For Graphs, Thomas Fleming, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Chord diagrams on circles and their intersection graphs (also known as circle graphs) have been intensively studied, and have many applications to the study of knots and knot invariants, among others. However, chord diagrams on more general graphs have not been studied, and are potentially equally valuable in the study of spatial graphs. We will define chord diagrams for planar embeddings of planar graphs and their intersection graphs, and prove some basic results. Then, as an application, we will introduce Gauss codes for immersions of graphs in the plane and give algorithms to determine whether a particular crossing sequence is …

Tree Diagrams For String Links, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In previous work, the author defined the intersection graph of a chord diagram associated with string links (as in the theory of finite type invariants). In this paper, we classify the trees which can be obtained as intersection graphs of string link diagrams.

Linked Exact Triples Of Triangulated Categories And A Calculus Of T-Structures, Michael Berg Jan 2006

Linked Exact Triples Of Triangulated Categories And A Calculus Of T-Structures, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We introduce a new formalism of exact triples of triangulated categories arranged in certain types of diagrams. We prove that these arrangements are well-behaved relative to the process of gluing and ungluing t-structures defined on the indicated categories and we connect our con. structs to· a problem (from number theory) involving derived categories. We also briefly address a possible connection with a result of R. Thomason.

Character, Reliability, And Virtue Epistemology, Jason Baehr Jan 2006

Character, Reliability, And Virtue Epistemology, Jason Baehr

Philosophy Faculty Works

Standard characterizations of virtue epistemology divide the field into two camps: virtue reliabilism and virtue responsibilism. Virtue reliabilists think of intellectual virtues as reliable cognitive faculties or abilities, while virtue responsibilists conceive of them as good intellectual character traits. I argue that responsibilist character virtues sometimes satisfy the conditions of a reliabilist conception of intellectual virtue, and that consequently virtue reliabilists, and reliabilists in general, must pay closer attention to matters of intellectual character. This leads to several new questions and challenges for any reliabilist epistemology.

The Togetherness Of Thought And Being: A Phenomenological Reading Of Plotinus’ Doctrine ‘That The Intelligibles Are Not Outside The Intellect, Eric Perl Jan 2006

The Togetherness Of Thought And Being: A Phenomenological Reading Of Plotinus’ Doctrine ‘That The Intelligibles Are Not Outside The Intellect, Eric Perl

Philosophy Faculty Works

Plotinus’ doctrine that intelligible reality is in and thus one with intellect bears close affinities to certain features of Husserlian phenomenology. For Husserl, consciousness is the immediate apprehension of being, and being is immediately given to consciousness. Within this unity, we find a “seeing” and a “seen,” an intentional grasp and that which is grasped. Thus there is neither mere identity nor extrinsic duality, but an irreducible polarity or togetherness of consciousness and being. For Plotinus, intellect, as the thinking of being, possesses being, and being is in intellect, as that of which it is the thinking. Therefore, intellect and …
