Dumbo's Feather: An Examination And Critique Of The Supreme Court's Use, Misuse, And Abuse Of Tradition In Protecting Fundamental Rights, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr. Jan 2006

Dumbo's Feather: An Examination And Critique Of The Supreme Court's Use, Misuse, And Abuse Of Tradition In Protecting Fundamental Rights, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Articles

The Justices of the Supreme Court have a great deal in common with the gifted pachyderm from the Walt Disney animated classic feature Dumbo. Like Dumbo's "magic" feather that purportedly enabled him to exercise his natural ability to fly, the tradition limitation on the Court's jurisprudence on unenumerated fundamental constitutional rights provides a more-apparent-thanreal constraint on the Court's almost unlimited ability to nullify legislative and executive action. In all too many substantive due process cases, reason seems to follow a predetermined result, rather than the result in the case following from the applicable governing principles. In this Article, Professor Krotoszynski …

Self-Optimization Of Optical Confinement In An Ultraviolet Photonic Crystal Slab Laser, Alexey Yamilov, X. Wu, X. Liu, Hui Cao, Robert P. H. Chang Jan 2006

Self-Optimization Of Optical Confinement In An Ultraviolet Photonic Crystal Slab Laser, Alexey Yamilov, X. Wu, X. Liu, Hui Cao, Robert P. H. Chang

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We studied numerically and experimentally the effects of structural disorder on the performance of ultraviolet photonic crystal slab lasers. Optical gain selectively amplifies the high-quality modes of the passive system. For these modes, the in-plane and out-of-plane leakage rates may be automatically balanced in the presence of disorder. The spontaneous optimization of in-plane and out-of-plane confinement of light in a photonic crystal slab may lead to a reduction of the lasing threshold.

Theoretical Description Of Two- And Three-Particle Interactions In Single Ionization Of Helium By Ion Impact, M. F. Ciappina, W. R. Cravero, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich Jan 2006

Theoretical Description Of Two- And Three-Particle Interactions In Single Ionization Of Helium By Ion Impact, M. F. Ciappina, W. R. Cravero, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work we calculate doubly differential cross sections (DDCS) for single ionization of helium by highly charged ion impact. We study the importance of two-particle interactions in these processes by considering the cross sections as a function of all two-particle subsystems momenta. Experimental DDCSs were obtained recently from kinematically complete experiments on single ionization of He by 100 MeV/amu C6+ and 3.6 MeV/amu Au24,53+ impact. Furthermore, we evaluated the importance of three-particle interactions by plotting the squared momenta of all three collision fragments simultaneously in a Dalitz plot. Using the first Born and distorted-wave approximations for fully differential cross …

Coping Processes Of Couples Experiencing Infertility, Brennan Peterson, Christopher R. Newton, Karen H. Rosen, Robert S. Shulman Jan 2006

Coping Processes Of Couples Experiencing Infertility, Brennan Peterson, Christopher R. Newton, Karen H. Rosen, Robert S. Shulman

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

This study explored the coping processes of couples experiencing infertility. Participants included 420 couples referred for advanced reproductive treatments. Couples were divided into groups based on the frequency of their use of eight coping strategies. Findings suggest that coping processes, which are beneficial to individuals, may be problematic for one's partner. Couples where men used high amounts of distancing, while their partner used low amounts of distancing, reported higher levels of distress when compared to couples in the other groups. Conversely, couples with women who used high amounts of self-controlling coping, when paired with men who used low amounts of …

Identifying The Challenges In Teaching Computer Science Topics Online, Yuwanuch Gulatee, Barbara Combes

EDU-COM International Conference

In an attempt to provide educational opportunities for students who are working or who are located at a distance, many universities have developed wholly online distance education programs. These online courses use web technology as a distributed learning mechanism. However, online distance learning in Computer Science courses remains challenging for both teachers and students. Research has shown that there is a significant risk factor for online courses in Computer Science. Course developers and teachers need to be aware of the particular needs of Computer Science students when establishing online courses, if they wish to graduate successful and satisfied students. This …

Концепция Национальной Образовательной Политики Российской Федерации, Михаил Кузьмин Jan 2006

Концепция Национальной Образовательной Политики Российской Федерации, Михаил Кузьмин
