Using data obtained with the CLEO III detector, running at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we report on a new study of exclusive radiative Upsilon(1S) decays into the final states gamma pi(+)pi(-), gamma K+K-, and gamma p (p) over bar. We present branching ratio measurements for the decay modes Upsilon(1S)->gamma f(2)(1270), Upsilon(1S)->gamma f '(2)(1525), and Upsilon(1S)->gamma K+K-; helicity production ratios for f(2)(1270) and f '(2)(1525); upper limits for the decay Upsilon(1S)->gamma f(J)(2200), with f(J)(2220)->pi(+)pi(-), K+K-, p (p) over bar; and an upper limit for the decay Upsilon(1S)->gamma X(1860), with X(1860)->gamma p (p) …

Probing Neutrino Mass Hierarchies And Phi(13) With Supernova Neutrinos, S. H. Chiu, T. K. Kuo

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigate the feasibility of probing the neutrino mass hierarchy and the mixing angle phi(13) with the neutrino burst from a future supernova. An inverse power-law density rho similar to r(n) with varying n is adopted in the analysis as the density profile of a typical core-collapse supernova. The survival probabilities of nu(e) and (nu) over bar (e) are shown to reduce to two-dimensional functions of n and phi(13). It is found that in the n-sin(2)phi(13) parameter space, the 3D plots of the probability functions exhibit highly nontrivial structures that are sensitive to the mass hierarchy, the mixing angle phi(13), …

Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics associated with the spontaneous breaking of the local supersymmetries. The resulting action is an invariant form of the Einstein-Hilbert action, which in addition to the gravitational vierbein, also includes a massive gravitino field. Invariant interactions with matter and gauge fields are also constructed. The effective Lagrangian describing processes involving the emission or absorption of a single light gravitino is analyzed.

Hysteresis And Noise From Electronic Nematicity In High-Temperature Superconductors, E. W. Carlson, K. A. Dahmen, E. Fradkin, S. A. Kivelson

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

An electron nematic is a translationally invariant state which spontaneously breaks the discrete rotational symmetry of a host crystal. In a clean square lattice, the electron nematic has two preferred orientations, while dopant disorder favors one or the other orientations locally. In this way, the electron nematic in a host crystal maps to the random field Ising model. Since the electron nematic has anisotropic conductivity, we associate each Ising configuration with a resistor network and use what is known about the random field Ising model to predict new ways to test for local electronic nematic order (nematicity) using noise and …

Using data collected with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e(+)e(-) collider at root s = 3.97-4.26 GeV, we investigate 15 charmonium decay modes of the psi(4040), psi(4160), and Y(4260) resonances. We confirm, at 11 sigma significance, the BABAR Y(4260)->pi(+)pi(-)J/psi discovery, make the first observation of Y(4260)->pi(0)pi(0)J/psi (5.1 sigma), and find the first evidence for Y(4260)-> K(+)K(-)J/psi (3.7 sigma). We measure e(+)e(-) cross sections at root s=4.26 GeV as sigma(pi(+)pi(-)J/psi)=58(-10)(+12)+/- 4 pb, sigma(pi(0)pi(0)J/psi)=23(-8)(+12)+/- 1 pb, and sigma(K(+)K(-)J/psi)=9(-5)(+9)+/- 1 pb, in which the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Upper limits are placed on other decay rates from …

Nonlinear Realization Of Supersymmetric Ads Space Isometries, T. E. Clark, S. T. Love Jan 2006

Nonlinear Realization Of Supersymmetric Ads Space Isometries, T. E. Clark, S. T. Love

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The isometries of AdS(5) space and supersymmetric AdS(5)circle times S-1 space are nonlinearly realized on four-dimensional Minkowski space. The resultant effective actions in terms of the Nambu-Goldstone modes are constructed. The dilatonic mode governing the motion of the Minkowski space probe brane into the covolume of supersymmetric AdS(5) space is found to be unstable and the bulk of the AdS(5) space is unable to sustain the brane. No such instability appears in the nonsupersymmetric case.

In 2003 April-May, the blazar 1ES 1959+650 showed an increased level of X-ray activity. This prompted a multiwavelength observation campaign with the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope, the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer, the Bordeaux Optical Observatory, and the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory. We present the multiwavelength data taken from 2003 May 2 to June 7 and compare the source characteristics with those measured during observations taken during the years 2000 and 2002. The X-ray observations gave a data set with high signal-to-noise ratio light curves and energy spectra; however, the gamma-ray observations did not reveal a major TeV …

The two-photon width of chi(c2)(P-3(2)) state of charmonium has been measured using 14.4 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) data taken at root s=9.46-11.30 GeV with the CLEO III detector. The gamma gamma-fusion reaction studied is e(+)e(-)-> e(+)e(-)gamma gamma, gamma gamma ->chi(c2)->gamma J/psi ->gamma e(+)e(-)(mu(+)mu(-)). We measure Gamma(gamma gamma)(chi(c2))B(chi(c2)->gamma J/psi)B(J/psi -> e(+)e(-)+mu(+)mu(-))=13.2 +/- 1.4(stat)+/- 1.1(syst) eV, and obtain Gamma(gamma gamma)(chi(c2))=559 +/- 57(stat)+/- 48(syst)+/- 36(br) eV. This result is in excellent agreement with the result of gamma gamma-fusion measurement by Belle and is consistent with that of the (p) over barp ->chi(c2)->gamma gamma measurement, when they are both …

We report first-epoch circular polarization results for 133 active galactic nuclei in the MOJAVE program to monitor the structure and polarization of a flux-limited sample of extragalactic radio jets with the VLBA at 15 GHz. We found strong circular polarization (>= 0.3%) in approximately 15% of our sample. The circular polarization was usually associated with jet cores; however, we did find a few strong jet components to be circularly polarized. The levels of circular polarization were typically in the range of 0.3%-0.5% of the local Stokes I value. We found no strong correlations between fractional circular polarization of jet …

Due to the ubiquity of time series with long-range correlation in many areas of science and engineering, analysis and modeling of such data is an important problem. While the field seems to be mature, three major issues have not been satisfactorily resolved. (i) Many methods have been proposed to assess long-range correlation in time series. Under what circumstances do they yield consistent results? (ii) The mathematical theory of long-range correlation concerns the behavior of the correlation of the time series for very large times. A measured time series is finite, however. How can we relate the fractal scaling break at …

We demonstrate experimentally single-electron quantum dots using a single-top-gate transistor configuration on a composite quantum well. The data indicate a 15 meV Coulomb charging energy and a 20 meV orbital energy spacing, which imply a quantum dot of 20 nm in diameter. Combining with the inherent advantage of a large electron g(*) factor in InAs, our demonstration is significant for a solid state implementation of a scalable quantum computing. We show that the piezoelectric coupling to three-dimensional phonons in GaAs renormalizes the current-voltage exponent for tunneling of electrons into an incompressible quantum Hall edge. The leading correction is always negative, in agreement with experiments on the nu=1/3 state, and, depending on the precise value of the edge plasmon speed, can be as large as a few percent. We also discuss higher-order corrections, which determine the effect of the piezoelectric coupling in the extreme infrared limit.

Thermal Hysteresis In The Magnetization Of The Layered Iii-Vi Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor In1-Xmnxse, T. M. Pekarek, L. H. Ranger, I. Miotkowski, A. K. Ramdas

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Magnetic properties of single-crystalline In1-xMnxSe (x=0.10) have been measured. A prominent thermal hysteresis in the magnetization is observed between 90 and 290 K. The magnetization is reversible (deviating by only similar to 0.8%) from 400 down to similar to 120 K along the upper branch of the hysteresis. In contrast, the lower branch magnetization is irreversible from 5 up to 290 K and deviates by 30% of the 0.010 emu/g hysteresis splitting at 140 K. Magnetic-field hysteresis loops at 200 K between -7 and +7 T demonstrate that changing the magnetic field does not allow movement between the upper and …

Galaxy clusters might be sources of TeV gamma rays emitted by high-energy protons and electrons accelerated by large-scale structure formation shocks, galactic winds, or active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, gamma rays may be produced in dark matter particle annihilation processes at the cluster cores. We report on observations of the galaxy clusters Perseus and A2029 using the 10 m Whipple Cerenkov telescope during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 observing seasons. We apply a two-dimensional analysis technique to scrutinize the clusters for TeV emission. In this paper we first determine flux upper limits on TeVgamma- ray emission from point sources within the clusters. …

Parametric Resonance Based Scanning Probe Microscopy, M. Moreno-Moreno, A. Raman, J. Gomez-Herrero, R. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We propose a mode of dynamic scanning probe microscopy based on parametric resonance for highly sensitive nanoscale imaging and force spectroscopy. In this mode the microcantilever probe is excited by means of a closed-loop electronic circuit that modulates the microcantilever stiffness at a frequency close to twice its natural resonance frequency. Under ambient conditions this parametric pumping leads to self-sustained oscillations in a narrow frequency bandwidth thereby resulting in exquisitely sharp, controllable, and non-Lorentzian resonance peaks. We discuss and demonstrate the potential of imaging and force spectroscopy using this mode. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Spontaneous Spin Polarization In Quantum Point Contacts, L. P. Rokhinson, L. N. Pfeiffer, K. W. West

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We use spatial spin separation by a magnetic focusing technique to probe the polarization of quantum point contacts. The point contacts are fabricated from p-type GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. A finite polarization is measured in the low-density regime, when the conductance of a point contact is tuned to < 2e(2)/h. Polarization is stronger in samples with a well-defined "0.7 structure."

We present the first experimental limits on high-q(2) contributions to charmless semileptonic B decays of the form expected from the weak annihilation (WA) decay mechanism. Such contributions could bias determinations of vertical bar V(ub)vertical bar from inclusive measurements of B -> X(u)l nu. Using a wide range of models based on available theoretical input we set a limit of Gamma(WA)/Gamma(b -> u)< 7.4% (90% confidence level) on the WA fraction, and assess the impact on previous inclusive determinations of vertical bar V(ub)vertical bar.

We determine the dielectron widths of the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) resonances with better than 2% precision by integrating the cross section of e(+)e(-)->Upsilon over the e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energy. Using e(+)e(-) energy scans of the Upsilon resonances at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring and measuring Upsilon production with the CLEO detector, we find dielectron widths of 1.252 +/- 0.004(sigma(stat))+/- 0.019(sigma(syst)) keV, 0.581 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.009 keV, and 0.413 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.006 keV for the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S), respectively.

Using 281 pb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO-c detector, we report on first observations and measurements of Cabibbo-suppressed decays of D mesons in the following six decay modes: pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)pi(0), pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(-)pi(0), pi(+)pi(0)pi(0), pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), eta pi(0), and omega pi(+)pi(-). Improved branching fraction measurements in eight other multipion decay modes are also presented. The measured D ->pi pi rates allow us to extract the ratio of isospin amplitudes A(Delta I=3/2)/A(Delta I=1/2)=0.420 +/- 0.014(stat)+/- 0.016(syst) and the strong phase shift of delta(I)=(86.4 +/- 2.8 +/- 3.3)degrees, which is quite large and now more precisely determined.

The resonant multiple Bragg x-ray diffraction is used to study the forbidden (10 (4) over bar) reflection in LaMnO3. Using the interference between the three-beam scattering and resonant scattering we can determine the phase of the resonant scattering. This phase is shown to be consistent with a model in which the resonant scattering is caused by the influence of the Mn-O bond length distortion rather than directly by the orbital ordering on the Mn 4p band structure.

We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV gamma-ray blazar Mrk 421 performed during 2002 December and 2003 January. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple gamma-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6 m; WIYN 0.9 m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV gamma-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares …

Ultrasensitive Mass Sensing Using Mode Localization In Coupled Microcantilevers, M. Spletzer, A. Raman, A. Q. Wu, X. F. Xu, R. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We use Anderson or vibration localization in coupled microcantilevers as an extremely sensitive method to detect the added mass of a target analyte. We focus on the resonance frequencies and eigenstates of two nearly identical coupled gold-foil microcantilevers. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that the relative changes in the eigenstates due to the added mass can be orders of magnitude greater than the relative changes in resonance frequencies. Moreover this sensing paradigm possesses intrinsic common mode rejection characteristics thus providing an alternate way to achieve ultrasensitive mass detection under ambient conditions. Calculations and measurements of the magnetization of Ga1-xMnxS, a III-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor crystal, are reported. Results extend over a wide range of concentrations: x=0.18, 0.13, 0.099, 0.079, 0.062, 0.032, and 0.008. The magnetization was measured at temperatures from 50 to 400 K in magnetic fields up to 7 T. The experimental data are compared with a model of the magnetization that is derived using the energy levels of a singlet Hamiltonian which posits the manganese atoms are not interacting with each other. The Hamiltonian consists of crystal-field, spin-orbit, spin-spin, and Zeeman interactions of the 3d electrons of the Mn+3 …

Magnetic Excitations Of Stripes And Checkerboards In The Cuprates, D. X. Yao, E. W. Carlson, D. K. Campbell

We discuss the magnetic excitations of well-ordered stripe and checkerboard phases, including the high energy magnetic excitations of recent interest and possible connections to the "resonance peak" in cuprate superconductors. Using a suitably parametrized Heisenberg model and spin wave theory, we study a variety of magnetically ordered configurations, including vertical and diagonal site- and bond-centered stripes and simple checkerboards. We calculate the expected neutron scattering intensities as a function of energy and momentum. At zero frequency, the satellite peaks of even square-wave stripes are suppressed by as much as a factor of 34 below the intensity of the main incommensurate …

We present measurements of the inclusive branching fractions for the decays D+-> Xe+nu(e) and D-0 -> Xe+nu(e), using 281 pb(-1) of data collected on the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector. We find B(D-0 -> Xe+nu(e))=(6.46 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.13)% and B(D+-> Xe+nu(e))=(16.13 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.33)%. Using the known D meson lifetimes, we obtain the ratio Gamma(+sl)(D)/Gamma(0sl)(D)=0.985 +/- 0.028 +/- 0.015, confirming isospin invariance at the level of 3%. The positron momentum spectra from D+ and D-0 have consistent shapes.

Hot One-Temperature Accretion Flows Revisited, F. Yuan, R. E. Taam, Y. Q. Xue, W. Cui

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The effectiveness of the thermal coupling of ions and electrons in optically thin, hot accretion flows is investigated in a phenomenological approach. In the limit of complete coupling, we focus on the one-temperature accretion flows around black holes. Based on a global analysis, the results are compared with two-temperature accretion flow models and with the observations of black hole sources. Many features of one-and two-temperature solutions are quite similar. That is, hot one-temperature solutions are found to exist for mass flow rates less than a critical value, i.e.,. M less than or similar to 10 alpha(2)M(Edd), where M-Edd = L-Edd/c(2) …
