Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

The Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service reported sweet corn for fresh market sales was harvested from 5,200 acres in Indiana in 2005 and had a total value of $7.6 million. Sweet corn fields are located throughout the state. In Northern Indiana bicolor corn is most commonly grown. Varieties with improved eating quality are of interest to both producers and consumers. Producers are also interested in yield, ear size and appearance, and agronomic characteristics. This paper reports on twenty sh2 sweet corn cultivars known as ‘supersweet’ or ‘enhanced’ or ‘augmented supersweet’ that were evaluated at the Pinney-Purdue Ag Center, Wanatah, IN.

Transportation, wholesaling, and retailing activities are a significant segment of economic activity in many economies. The magnitude of these activities can vary greatly between products, users, and regions. However, in most applied general equilibrium (AGE) analyses, these marketing activities are not tied to specific commodities. This paper develops a model framework and database that incorporates domestic marketing margins on domestic and imported goods going to final demand or used as intermediate inputs, and margins on exports, into the standard GTAP Model. We present the results of a search for new physics in the jets plus missing transverse energy data sample collected from 368 pb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We compare the number of events observed in the data with a data-based estimate of the standard model backgrounds contributing to this signature. We observe no significant excess of events, and we interpret this null result in terms of lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale for a large extra dimensions scenario.

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Research Reports

This report outlines the history of the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) and details the OWL Usability Project through the summer of 2006. The paper also discusses test methodologies, describes test methods, provides participant demographics, and presents findings and recommendations of the tests. The purpose of this report is to provide researchers, administrators, and pedagogues interested in usability and Writing Labs access to information on the Purdue OWL Usability Project. We hope our findings—and this open source approach to our research—will contribute positively to the corpus on usability and Writing Lab studies.

We measure the inclusive branching fractions of charm mesons into three mesons with large s (s) over bar content, namely, the eta, eta(') and phi. Data were accumulated with the CLEO-c detector. For D-0 and D+ rates, we use 281 pb(-1) taken on the psi(3770) resonance, and for D-s(+) rates, we use 195 pb(-1) taken at 4170 MeV. We find that the production rates of these particles are larger in D-s(+) decays than in D-0 and D+ decays. The phi rate, in particular, is 15 times greater. We present measurements of the inclusive branching fractions for the decays D+-> Xe+nu(e) and D-0 -> Xe+nu(e), using 281 pb(-1) of data collected on the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector. We find B(D-0 -> Xe+nu(e))=(6.46 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.13)% and B(D+-> Xe+nu(e))=(16.13 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.33)%. Using the known D meson lifetimes, we obtain the ratio Gamma(+sl)(D)/Gamma(0sl)(D)=0.985 +/- 0.028 +/- 0.015, confirming isospin invariance at the level of 3%. The positron momentum spectra from D+ and D-0 have consistent shapes.

The Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service reported sweet corn for fresh market sales was harvested from 5,200 acres in Indiana in 2005 and had a total value of $7.6 million. Sweet corn fields are located throughout the state. In Northern Indiana bicolor corn is most commonly grown. Varieties with improved eating quality are of interest to both producers and consumers. Producers are also interested in yield, ear size and appearance, and agronomic characteristics. This paper reports on eighteen sweet corn cultivars with homozygous se or mixed se and sh2 (synergistic) genetics that were evaluated at the Pinney-Purdue Ag Center, Wanatah, IN.

Bacterial spot of tomatoes (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) causes lesions on leaves, stems and fruit. Under conditions of hot, humid, rainy weather, defoliation can result in a loss of yield. In addition, lesions on fruit result in a direct loss of marketability. This disease is managed primarily with applications of fixed copper bactericides, crop rotations, greenhouse sanitation and healthy seed/transplants. Even in properly managed commercial fields, however, bacterial spot can cause yield losses. We report the observation of B-s(0)-(B) over bar (0)(s) oscillations from a time-dependent measurement of the B-s(0)-(B) over bar (0)(s) oscillation frequency Delta m(s). Using a data sample of 1 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we find signals of 5600 fully reconstructed hadronic B-s decays, 3100 partially reconstructed hadronic B-s decays, and 61 500 partially reconstructed semileptonic B-s decays. We report a measurement of the t (t) over bar production cross section using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The analysis is performed using 311 pb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV. The data consist of events selected with six or more hadronic jets with additional kinematic requirements. At least one of these jets must be identified as a b-quark jet by the reconstruction of a secondary vertex. The cross section is measured to be sigma(t (t) over bar)=7.5 +/- 2.1(stat.)(-2.2)(+3.3)(syst.)(-0.4)(+0.5)(lumi.) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

We present a search for Higgs bosons decaying into b (b) over bar and produced in association with W bosons in p (p) over bar collisions at root s =1.96 TeV. This search uses 320 pb(-1) of the data set accumulated by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. Events are selected that have a high-transverse momentum electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and two jets, at least one of which is consistent with the hadronization of a b quark. Both the number of events and the dijet mass distribution are consistent with standard model background expectations, and we set 95% …

This research explores workers' solidarity and shared culture in the cab driving industry, using theories of distributive justice and relational justice. Cab driving culture involves a high level of worker solidarity, with drivers relying on fellow drivers for assistance, working together in the face of conflict, and imposing various forms of social control when the cab driving community's norms are violated. This article operationalizes such actions as "street justice." Through both individual and group acts of street justice, the cabdrivers promote the main goals of their occupation's culture: justice and safety.

This study compares workplace dispute resolution strategies (exit, voice, and toleration) in matched pairs of conventional and worker-owned cooperative organizations operating in three industries – coal mining, taxicab driving, and organic food distribution. Building on Hirschman’s classic exit, voice, and loyalty thesis, this research demonstrates how the degree of loyalty that workers hold affects how they approach workplace problems. I find that workers with greater loyalty are more likely to embrace “voice” as a way to address their problems. Although the “exit” patterns do not mirror the classic “exit-voice framework,” the data do support Hirschman’s broader thesis, which incorporates examination …

Employee retention and satisfaction are key concerns for employers. In this article, I explore a variety of worker characteristics that affect how workers respond to troubling events and circumstances in the workplace. I examine how they approach their workplace problems, focusing on the value of their loyalty and how this loyalty might affect their problem-related decisions. This research suggests that worker loyalty presents an irony for managers, which I call the ironic value of loyalty: workers with greater loyalty are less likely to exit when they encounter workplace problems, decreasing turnover problems, yet when more loyal workers choose to remain …

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011

This paper furnishes a preliminary assessment of the field and laboratory procedures used to obtain ceramic field data by the participants of Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project in western Rough Cilicia (Gazipasha District, Antalya Province, south coastal Turkey). Between 1996 and 2004 the pedestrian team of the Rough Cilicia Survey conducted pottery collections and otherwise processed field pottery as its principal operation. Through nine consecutive field seasons the pedestrian team identified and processed an aggregate of 7313 sherds.
